Overnight Open Thread (11 Sep 2015)

Our political class has forgotten every lesson learned from 9/11.

Duh!

Study: All-male Marine units outperform squads with women. But hey, equality or something. Like that matters on the battlefield.

The study found all-male squads were faster in each tactical movement than those with both genders, according to the summary. The differences were greater when they were carrying heavy weapons and ammunition.

Also, all-male rifle groups had better accuracy than integrated squads, according to the summary. And women had more injuries such as stress fractures.

Terrorist Protection

These must be some pretty sweet desk partitions. Pentagon to protect recruiters with desk partitions. I'll just go with the Constanza desk at this rate.

Still, "none of the military services are interested in arming recruiters," the Times reported.

Why? Brass worry that shoppers at malls, as well as educators, parents and students on school campuses, might be alarmed at seeing soldiers carrying guns. "Recruiters showing up armed is not going to make either educators or parents comfortable," Marine Corps Commanding General Mark Brilakis said.

Huh? The public understands: sidearms are part of a soldier's uniform and they're trained to use them safely.

We had the funeral yesterday and I gave a short eulogy. It was the hardest thing I've ever done.

She is in a better place, and her struggle in this world is over. It is so hard to accept a loss of someone loved, but I am sure that your aunt would not want you to grieve about her. But none of us can help the pain and loss in our hearts when something like this happens.

Old joke:

Two friends were out comping when one of them got bitten on the penis by a poisonous snake. "Jim, help me! What do I do?!" screamed John.

John opened up his first aid book to read about snake bites. "The bite of the cottonmouth can be fatal, unless the venom is extracted within the first few minutes. Without special equipment, sucking and spitting out the venom is the only way to extract the venom thoroughly." the book read.

Jon closed the book somberly and said, "Bad news, Jim. You're gonna die."

My father was a heavy smoker until he was 40. Double pneumonia for the 2nd time made him stop. Unfortunately the damage was done. Opportunistic infections further damaged his lungs to the point it put a significant strain on his heart. It killed him 30 years later, but his last 10 years were not pleasant. He had been a very active guy, but his health issues significantly curtailed that.
We used to go fishing in the mountains. He couldn't do that anymore due his breathing issues.
He loved high power matches, but I pulled targets for him because I feared the strain might kill him.
I was willing to give up an organ if it would have kept him around longer. Love and miss you dad.

Father in law was a heavy smoker, he quit about 20 years ago at age 60, but it has taken its toll. He has emphyzema, so he has to lug oxygen around now, and if he gets a cold, it can lead to pnuemonia.

Me? I was a heavy dipper for about 16 years, and I hope I didn't cause any damage, and am so glad I quit about 20 years ago.

143 I got a 12/12 on the science quiz (which shocks me), but I had two small issues:

1) isn't radio wave a form of light wave? I'm an idiot so I may be making that up
2) maybe I misread the question, but didn't it say "which of these is necessary to make nuclear power or nuclear weapons?" the correct answer being "uranium".

But that's not really necessarily correct -- plutonium and thorium would also work, right? I mean I get that those weren't options, and maybe I'm mis-remembering the question, but the phrasing seemed weird to me.

anyways, whatever. Pew can suck my nuts.

Also the astrology / astronomy thing was kind of bullshit, since it was a bullshit question -- one of those is a science and one is not. And the question was not about the science, it was about bullshit pseudo pagan spiritual "life influencing". So that was more of a reading comprehension trick question than a science question.

My father got very, very lucky.

He was a heavy smoker, but one Spring he came down ill. It developed into sepsis that spread from his lungs to his blood. They had to put him in an induced coma and pump out all the gunk in his lungs. Even then, one of the lungs collapsed. His digestive system shut down and his renal system came *this* close to shutting down... at one point they told my Mother to "start making arrangements". He had a 1 in 10 chance of living, but due to experimental drugs, experimental treatment, and that fact that he had a healthy heart, he managed to survive.

I still remember when I came to visit and they told me that they were starting to take him out of the coma, and that he could respond to basic stimulus, I immediately grabbed his hand and he grabbed back.

My problem with House of Cards, West Wing, ect. is how the McGuffin had devoured the show. Not just simplified, but the moral universe is flattened into a single metric. I am in a quandary about this series. I just can't bring myself to root against the Brewers, but OTOH, we're not going anywhere, and I'd rather see the Bucs take the division than the Cards. 'Cause you know if it comes down to the Wild Card game, your boys will see Arrieta....

- Believe that the Holy Land is actually right here in the western USA, and that it's *always* been here.

186 Are Mormons Christian?

https://www.mormon.org/faq/mormon-christian

Gordon B. Hinckley, prior President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1995-200, said:

"We are Christians in a very real sense and that is coming to be more and more widely recognized. Once upon a time people everywhere said we are not Christians. They have come to recognize that we are, and that we have a very vital and dynamic religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We, of course, accept Jesus Christ as our Leader, our King, our Savior...the dominant figure in the history of the world, the only perfect Man who ever walked the earth, the living Son of the living God. He is our Savior and our Redeemer through whose atoning sacrifice has come the opportunity of eternal life. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pray and worship in the name of Jesus Christ. He is the center of our faith and the head of our Church. The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ and witnesses of His divinity, His life, and His Atonement."

The owner of the beltway bandit company I work for has box seats at FedEx field. They are amazing and worth going to see 2 teams I don't care about. Plus, the Steelers are a .500 team this year, maybe. They did ok against the Cheatriats but they kept stepping on there own dicks (the Pats cheating didn't help ;-)). Watching the Redskins will show that I really don't have that bad being a Steelers fan.

272 Ricardo, John 1:1-3,14 says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. ... And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."

God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So when Genesis says, "In the beginning God created..." it is not leaving out any of the Trinity.

Please don't ask me to explain how one God is three Persons. I'm sure my mental picture of that is incorrect.

Yes, God allowed Satan. We all have the option of rebelling against God as Satan did.

281 Don McLean is, I believe, a conservative nowadays. Back around 1993 I bought an actual new album of his, titled Headroom. It had some songs that actually sounded as if they could become conservative anthems.

But it's good to be a songwriter of his caliber. He was doing okay, then Madonna (of all people) did a (terrible) remake of his all-time classic "American Pie" around 1998 and marketed it as her new single. I've read that Madge's royalty check alone helped provide a new, improved, extra-comfy retirement for Don.

349 Yes, shows are still great. Saw them in 2003 and 2012.

Judas Priest on the other hand...

Not bad, but they can't play their best songs anymore. Too fast for Glen and too high for Halford. I saw them last fall and it was a good show, but no Electric Eye, Painkiller, etc. They played all the boring songs like Love Bites, Turbo Lover, Heading Out to the Highway etc. Victim of Changes was awesome and Halford hit the long high note, though.

Tha show was Glen Tiptons 67th Birthday.

It's okay; I don't mind questions at all. I was just referencing the fact that I don't have all the theology nailed down. My mental picture of the Trinity is a committee, and I'm sure that's not quite right.

Jesus' visit to earth wasn't to prove God's ability. Right after the fall of mankind, God had promised Adam and Eve that He would provide a remedy for sin and death. Jesus paid the price for sin and provided the way to eternal life.

They just introduced the oddest new station recently called "Yachtrock"-it walks down Jimmy Buffet Street with a detour into not too soft late 70s/early 80s rock-with a lot of pretty good stuff you never hear anymore (Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs, Hall and Oates) and some godawful shite (PIna Colada song) and its like a trainwreck-I can't stop listening, like I get that 'genre' of music though I have never heard it was a thing and, I have never heard it called Yachtrock. 386 The Israelis ran a test to see about integrating women into combat (I think in the '70s) and it failed miserably.

The women couldn't keep up so the men had to do alot more work e.g. carrying a squad's (or higher up formation like platoon's) heavy weapon/s and ammo; needed six of them to carry wounded; the men became overly protective of the women especially if wounded and wouldn't leave them behind to do something more militarily pressing at the time, and the like.

So if Israel, whether bastion of regional democracy or evil Zionist entity!!1!1!, that has a real need for foot soldiers (even if it is to kill poor little Palestinians!!1!) couldn't make it work despite that motivation to make it work, it won't work anywhere else in the West. (Use the ZOG arguments if you're arguing with a lib-leftist on women in combat as infantry; it'll throw them for a loop.)

406 I think Karl Marx created the whole idea of communism out of two flawed guiding principles. One was a general ignorance of how economics actually works, and the other was a blinding hatred of his Jewish relatives.

If you look at his personal writings, they're full of examples of those relatives loaning him money, and him then feeling obligated to act nice to them and whine at them about his financial situation until they decided to forgive that debt. At which point he'd hit them up for another loan. Which they would give him. And he despised them for it.

It really irks me that so many people think that arschloch had any redeeming qualities and find his juvenile screeds to have any value whatsoever.

I was lucky to be in a mechanized unit as opposed to a light one.

Most females that serve in male-dominated MOSs such as Ordnance will tell you that most females will SUCK ASS in a light infantry unit where they have to hump 70+ lbs of gear on foot.

Easy for a chick to say that they can handle combat when they're riding around in a humvee or a MRAP, with a crew-served weapon at the ready.

Bit different at an outpost where one has to do constant foot patrols.

Bit different when you're doing foot patrols.

It was fun to hear them respond to his list of "citations," which with them doesn't mean traffic stops, but stuff like the Croix de Guerre and the Belgian Fourragere.

So I came next, and they couldn't do a thing for me. Just not the kinds of assets they're actuaried for, I suppose. But then I have "rich guy insurance" (note, not claiming rich-guy status, just a good agent), so my rates on this and that aren't really hurting me, just a lot of different coverages. That add up.

Like a rational solid citizen (read "fool") I have all the autos, the houses and buildings, and extra liabilities come due once a year instead of scattered easy installments. That way I can easily see what is what, but that one bill does cause a sharp intake of breath even when you know it's coming. If nothing else, it's a good encouragement to shop rates every so often.

I would say, if you qualify, by all means get a quote from USAA. They are competitive for most risks, and you'll feel good about doing business there, as opposed to, say, Progressive for instance. Chances are good they'll save you money, but it is not guaranteed.

437 Fun story all you morons will like.

I have a guy at work who is the love child of Frank Burns and Cliff Clavin. He's a blowhard who knows nothing - NOTHING! - but never stops sharing his "knowledge" with you.

He's a jackass who runs up to every new employee and starts acting like the "vet" who's gonna tell 'em how everything works. (I call this their "official disorientation.")

He applied to be a supervisor and was basically laughed off.

Then they advanced a nice young lad instead.

"Burns/Clavin" was so pissed that he stomped around all day, bitching to everyone... and finally had "an attack" and was taken away on a fucking stretcher!

A delightful end to an otherwise ugly week.

Well, physics tells us that light (and all other forms of
electromagnetic energy) exists as both particles and waves at the same
time and place.
-----------
And just the act of observing it can change the results. An experiment with light photons showed that under certain conditions, the photons acted like a particle. Under other conditions it acted like a wave. The only condition that changed was the observation state.

To put this in context, Axford blew five straight saves for the Rockies. I have no faith in his pitching.

Ooooh, conspiracy theories can be so much fun! Here's the problem though...you have to believe that President Bush was both a) dumb as a sack of hair and b) a criminal mastermind the kind of which the world has never seen (insert evil laugh here). Simultaneously you have to believe that every member of the staff would pass up on the opportunity to make a fortune in the tell-all book market.

Same reason why the military did not down TWA-800, if they had someone would talk...especially if there were pretty girls or alcohol involved, because the story is always better with an audience and some dude that was TAD to the laundry would be telling the tale of how he pushed the button himself at the captain's orders.

561 never forget bush knew! He was given cia report in august 2001 titled

bin ladin determined to attack america with airplanes

It's always best to hide a lie inside a little bit of truth.

Yes, there was a CIA report. It's called the President's daily brief. It's two pages, double spaced of all the shit they though was interesting enough to pass up the chain of command, and included stuff like the y2k plot to down ten aircraft on intercontinental routes simultaneously. Most of which, you'll note, never happened for any number of reasons, not the least of which is the propensity of muslims to talk out of their asses about what great things they're going to so. One line of such a report (and I don't remember what month it was) had a reference to bin laden attacking us with airplanes. That's it. That's the entirety of "Bush knew".

You'll also note, not that you stuck around to read any responses, the 'daily' part of the briefing. By mid September, he would have received 240 roughly such daily briefings, and more depending on how they brief incoming presidents (+ 60) and party nominees (+100 or so?).

Thus asserting Bush knew, is along the lines of, if I told you I had read the every verse of the Bible, you expecting me to have committed to memory the name of the third king after Hezekiah.

Quickly, I think. By the way, mortality is precisely what gives "immortality" meaning.

Just as most anyone can easily comprehend the "infinite". To be sure:

Do you have a basic understanding of what it means for something to be finite?
Oh, good, you do. Well just apply the concept of negation to the finite and you immediately comprehend the infinite.

You have to remember, this is Ace's place.....and, as such, it is run on principles of Christian forgiveness and redemption the likes of which you won't find at other blogs. This is especially ironic in that Ace portrays himself as a secular atheist. Then, again, he's also managed to ban himself on his own blog.

And it's not like I have never been drunk here or struck-out in anger. When you feel "at-home", you sometimes forget the politeness expected of guests.

If The Powers That Be have let you back on, I hold no grudge. Be welcome and jape with us. The management, staff, and cobs are open to honest repentance and redemption. If you've snuck back in.....it's coming, and the sooner the better -- because you have not demonstrated such repentance and redemption.

#689,

Crude. But pretty damn funny. Could laugh out loud because she's fast asleep - snoring and farting like I should be.

Besides, I doubt the flute can hit the lower register to qualify for flatulence.

Oooops. 8-)

Thanks again to whoever it was that described using "Minx" along with whatever search term you are looking for, if you want to find old blog stuff for the site.

It's actually worse than that -- some comments are in acecomments.mu.nu, some are in minx.cc, and some are at port 1080. When Joffen's sister Sarah cornered me, I was very impressed by the way she navigated through the intentionally half-broken wreckage of the Ace archives. I wish she could have stayed and healed along with us -- there could have been a great deal of support -- but I also understand why she could not.

Incidentally, I know of no particular reason to be certain that Trump Super-Fan, Crewstape, and Vertov aren't actually the same person, especially with the deleted post from ANOTHER n00b about "puppet master".

709 Don't know if anyone cares, but ....

My local PBS station just finished re-airing Ken Burns "The Civil War" in its original form - 7 episodes in 5 nights. I'm as disgusted as anyone with what's going on today, but - watching the story of the war 150 years ago - gives one pause.

If there's anyone who hasn't seen this series - grab your kids and spouse and watch it over the course of five nights or a week. Immerse yourselves in the story. You'll be proud to be an American.

723 Why doesn't someone float the notion that, if our soldiers cannot be armed to defend themselves, maybe our "betters" in Congress and the White House shouldn't have armed security, either? I mean, what has happened more often since the Age of Obama the Traitor? More soldiers being attacked in non-combat areas, or more politicians?

Seems fair to disarm the security of the political class to me!
