After all, the hell Israel would pay if it attacks Iran must be weighed against the threat of a nuclear Iran. Barak's account, if accurate, adds plausibility to the view that Israel sees the latter as more hellacious. And this article by John Bosma makes the case that if Israel does attack Iran, it will very likely have to use low-yield nukes to be sure of taking out Iran's nuclear facilities. REPORTER: And anything you wish - I'm sorry - that you had not done or that you'd done differently? But Neo-neocon rebuts Carters regrets and shows that the botched rescue (and even the entire crisis) were the results of multiple sequential bad decisions by Jimmy Carter. Given that the shah's occasionally violent riot control during the revolution was now Exhibit A in Iran's human-rights case against the former regime and America, Carter wanted to avoid killing Iranians, so he had insisted that if a hostile crowd formed during the raid, Delta should attempt to control it without shooting people. Burruss considered this ridiculous. He and his men were going to assault a guarded compound in the middle of a city of more than 5 million people, most of them presumed to be aggressively hostile. It was unbelievably risky; everyone on the mission knew there was a very good chance they would not get home alive. Wade Ishmoto, a Delta captain who worked with the unit's intelligence division, had joked, 'The only difference between this and the Alamo is that Davy Crockett didn't have to fight his way in.'" Even after it became known that the Shah was suffering from cancer, President Carter was reluctant to allow him entry to the United States, for fear of reprisal against Americans still in Iran. But in October, when the severity of the Shah's illness became known, Carter relented on humanitarian grounds. "He went around the room, and most of us said, 'Let him in.'" recalls Vice President Walter Mondale. "And he said, 'And if [the Iranians] take our employees in our embassy hostage, then what would be your advice?' And the room just fell dead. No one had an answer to that. Turns out, we never did...". Should the Government Decide Which Political Positions Disqualify One from Dispensing Chicken? And the Denver city council says YES! ----------------------- That's like giving Obama one more attempt to drive it 300 yards. But, nice magical thinking there, Jimmy. Reflects how poor of a leader that dolt is. The problem was not the helicopter. The helicopter failure was the symptom of a gutted military and how incompetent leadership had degraded its capabilities over the years. Good leadership could have made it happen with the given resources. Carter did not have that leadership. IIRC, inter-branch squabbling transformed the rescue plan into a super Joint op with too many moving parts. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at August 26, 2015 11:44 PM (0NdlF) 57
The car list has at least some crap on it, and is probably full of a lot more.
60 minutes faked their footage of Audis accelerating out of control. They later admitted it. Audi issued several recalls despite finding nothing was wrong - extensive investigation determined drivers were pushing the wrong pedal when their cars "accelerated unintentionally." But that's why newer cars have their poor pedals scattered all over the footwell so you can't heel-and-toe properly. I suspect much of the list is researched that poorly. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at August 26, 2015 11:44 PM (bLnSU) 58
The problem isn't really Iran's nuclear facilities. It's their leadership. This is why Israel doesn't feel compelled to attack India, also a nuclear state, but one whose leadership hasn't screamed from the mountaintops that it wants to wipe Israel off the map. So unless all of Iran's leadership wants to live in a bunker deep below the surface of the earth for the forseeable future, they're the ones that should be afraid of Israel.

Posted by: Jinx the Cat at August 26, 2015 11:52 PM (l3vZN) 88
That dangerous car list is bunk. The Pinto was no more dangerous than any other similarly sized car of the timeperiod, they all had gasoline filler tubes set far back in the "dangerous" location. The Pinto had the bad luck to be the model lawyers and the media focused on.
Similarly, 1980s Audis did NOT suffer from "sudden acceleration syndrom". The "syndrome" is due to driver error- Louis Ledfoot stamping on the gas rather than the brake, but the govt was loath to say so because if they say "driver error" there is no need for government intervention AND the lawsuit gravy train for their buddies the trial lawyers goes away. Posted by: Weirddave at August 26, 2015 11:52 PM (7TK5d) 89

As Rush said, the drivers of the SUVs were never mentioned, just the SUVs themselves. #6: Now I know why Dad bought a Grand Am instead of a Fiero in 1988. #8: "In a used car lot on the edge of town/a liberal guy and a liberal gal buy a Yugo/and they drive with pride..." #9: Anyone who drives a car made in the PR deserves what they get. End of story. #13: Weebomobiles are at risk in collisions? Really?!? Reflects how poor of a leader that dolt is. The problem was not the helicopter. The helicopter failure was the symptom of a gutted military and how incompetent leadership had degraded its capabilities over the years. Good leadership could have made it happen with the given resources. Carter did not have that leadership. IIRC, inter-branch squabbling transformed the rescue plan into a super Joint op with too many moving parts. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at August 26, 2015 11:44 PM (0NdlF) Where to start? First, a failure to engage in contingency planning. A good leader would not let success depend on all the planets being in perfect alignment. Second, a good leader would kick ass among the services to make fucking sure they worked together. In Carter's position, I'd make clear that anyone evincing one scintilla of inter-service rivalry would be cashiered tomorrow morning, and that if the mission failed, they'd ALL be out on the street the next day. Then I'd look around the room, and ask for questions. But I wouldn't make threats verbally or explicitly; long before this, I'd have made each of these positions crystal clear subliminally. Third, don't micromanage from Washington. Delegate responsibility AND authority in equal measure, then leave it to those to whom you delagated the task. While you hope to God they pull it off. Jimmah Carter and your sad pathetic attempt to retcon the failure of Desert One to 'one more' is truly sick.
There were extra -53s sent from the carrier. One crew aborted due to a minor glitch while another crew pressed on with multiple warning lights. There were Rangers. There was Air Force. There was Navy. And in the mix spooks from the CIA. And at many points during the training, the branches were not talking to each other or were giving out optimistic blow-jobs on the planning and success. Then at the landing site, in the dark, an MC-130 and a -53 collided. And tragedy erupted as blood spilled as freely as fuel ignited. So Jimmy, just go away already. You are an abject failure. i don't think a successful rescue would have guaranteed Carter's reelection--far from it. The free world was in such a precarious position in 1980. I remember the big fear was that the Soviets would keep marching south from Afghanistan into the Middle East. Then you had the Solidarity movement in Poland, and there was great concern that Soviet tanks would roll into Warsaw, just like they did in Hungary in the late 1950's. And Carter seemed oblivious to it all.

#234: I was asked today by a LIV liberal coworker if Trump employs any illegals, and I hadn't thought about it before. He runs several big businesses, and probably delegates a lot of his hiring decisions, so I told her I don't know.
It occurred to me later, though, that if Trump had a single illegal working at any of his companies, given the way he's talked about Obama these past several years, his companies would've already been shut down. Look at how all those Republican-owned Chrysler and GM dealerships were shut down in the big car company bailout, and the IRS targeting of conservative groups for added scrutiny (and the illegal collusion between Lois Lerner and the DoJ to try to get those groups' founders prosecuted for merely being conservative)... Yeah, I think if any of Trump's businesses employed any illegals, he'd have already been prosecuted for it. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler... My final thought on Trump. I was always reserved because I wasn't sure if he was really serious.
Hiring Corey Laudner in Iowa and now bringing Clovis on board (clovis was previously with perry) has me convinced. These are THE two guys in Iowa. Barring any major f up, I think Trump will sweep IA, NH, and SC. Depending on any gope machinations or candidates dropping out, etc. Every time I visit this blog, I see a Trump ad. He builds billion dollar buildings and knows that the midleman must always be taken care of. See his olive branch to weekly standard guys. NRO has gone off the rails on him so he might be forever done with them. Federalist is more of a blip. I think the very smart set, such as Ace, realize that pretty much nothing aside from throwing a kitty off the roof or some crazy gaffe derails Trump. Even Rich Lowry I think is trying to set a different tone at NRO by embracing Trump's immigration policy full stop. Strange times indeed. 214 i don't think a successful rescue would have guaranteed Carter's reelection--far from it.

Or, as PJ O'Rourke memorably put it when the NHTSA analysis came out: "Yes, the dumb buggers stepped on the gas instead of the brake."
Posted by: Splunge at August 26, 2015 11:56 PM (iMxBJ) Cognitive dissonance. The intent is to step on the brake, but the foot lands on the accelerator instead. When the car fails to slow or stop, they push harder. I saw it happen. Old guy, 80+ (and a real sharp old dude, too, no dummy) was parking a '61 Studebaker Cruiser at a local show and shine in a mall parking lot. Instead of coming to a stop, he accelerated abruptly and ran square into a brick wall. And having hit the wall, both rear wheels broke loose and burned rubber. Brake lights never came on. He maintained until his dying day that the brakes had failed, but bystanders, myself among them, checked out the car immediately after the incident, and found the brakes to be in perfect working order. Brake lights, too. And '61 Studebaker Cruisers didn't have any fancy-ass computer-controlled anything on them. When those single-circuit hydraulic brakes failed, they stayed failed. What did perry people do? They leaked clovis' private emails to des moines register (of all papers!) where he was knocking Trump to certain voters in an effort to damage clovis with his new employer. So, if I have this straight clovis is on board with perry, perry issues marching orders to his people to attack Trump viciously, clovis does so and then his private emails are publicized by perry people to fuck up his relationship with new boss? With friends like that... Perry campaign is pure garbage. Whether clovis is a true believer in Trump or simply needs to make a living I don't care. the Iranians to keep the hostages longer in order to get Reagan elected. Even the NYT called BS on that." I hadn't heard that version before. Wild. Checked the link. Apparently it was Paris to which someone was claiming to have shuttled Poppy Bush in an SR-71, for sooper seekret negotiations. Having seen a very little bit of the hugely complicated traveling circus required to support Blackbird ops away from home base, ummmmmmmm no. That jet is about the furthest thing imaginable from a kick-the-tire, light-the-fire, away-we-go aircraft that there is. You could land the SR in a pinch in many surprising places, and fly it back out of those places, and that happened a few times. But there's no way to have the "fly it back out" part happen without also bringing along the traveling circus. Without that, the jet just won't fly. I'm 3/4 of the way through installing a new fill valve in our toilet. I'm at the point where I'm supposed to reattach the water supply connector, but when I try to screw it on and tighten it enough to engage the washer, the silly fill valve starts twisting around as well! And even though I have petite hands and arms, I can't reach between parts to get a good grip on the fill valve to keep it from rotating while I screw on the water supply connector. Posted by: chemjeff at August 27, 2015 01:13 AM (2XMpf) The Mark-87 Llama is far improved over previous four-legged varieties. Where the Mark-82 made good use of wheels to achieve high speed travel over flat terrain, the Mark-87 made the leap to anti-gravity based hover technologies, allowing all terrain traverse. Requires a bit more feed, but worth it to get hyper-accurate spit attacks into unsuspecting ears at unimagined angles. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at August 27, 2015 01:22 AM (1D4Ef) 419

Well, I kid you not, I just watched the KTVU news out of Oakland a couple minutes ago, which had a special report about Flanagan because he grew up in the Bay Area (in Oakland and Vallejo), and they interviewed one of his former neighbors who said, yep, "I can't believe he did this -- he was a gentle giant," triggering the Gentle Giant Siren above. You would think that Carter would at least be popular in Panama, wouldn't you? As a native Panamanian, I can tell you that the opposite is the truth.
Sure, just about everyone there wanted sovereignty over the canal, but they did NOT want the US to cede the canal during the dictatorship of Omar Torrijos. ALL of the democratic opposition, from right to left, desperately tried to get Carter to continue Gerald Ford's policy of holding out negotiating as a carrot while demanding free speech and elections. But Carter gave away the whole store for....nothing. Nothing for the USA at all and, considering the timing, worse than nothing for Panama, which was abandoned to Torrijos and his goon successor Noriega. I've never met a Panamanian, left, right, or center, who liked Carter one bit. They still look upon him with contempt. Bush the Elder, OTOH, the mean invader who got rid of Noriega, is loved by many and respected by nearly all. I can't help but think of the Iranians, the ones who hate the tyranny. Obama doesn't think of them at all. As long as these narcissists get their pretty little "historic" deals and can smile for the cameras, nothing else matters. /semi-rant off Posted by: Margarita who wishes she drank more at August 27, 2015 01:35 AM (cN9Sk) 442
Thanks, ConservativeMonster. I did indeed attach the fill valve to the tank with a locknut and tightened as far as it would go, but turning the water supply connector coupling past a certain point just causes the valve to turn as well. Part of the problem is that the coupling is a little crusty from water deposits, so there is more resistance when I try to turn it.

"I'm at the point where I'm supposed to reattach the water supply

A coating of silicone caulk where the fill valve assembly seats at the base of the tank. Let it cure for two hours or so and it'll hold the valve in place as the threaded connector is spun up on the lower part of the assembly. Cheap insurance. Those things, even the allegedly "burst proof" braided stainless jacketed supply lines, get fragile with age and can end up causing major water damage. Or for a quick fix, if you have some CLR under the sink -- a household must-have -- soak the connector and the crust should be able to be brushed away in a short while. Mindy, you have to remember that historically, the first flush toilets had their reservoirs mounted high on the wall, so that gravity would accelerate the surge of water down the pipe, to effectively clear offerings. There was a dangling chain that you pulled to make it flush.
So, of necessity, the tank was pierced at two places on the bottom from the get-go. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 27, 2015 02:20 AM (aRgrb) Posted by: OldDominionMom at August 27, 2015 02:21 AM (GzDYP) 527

Posted by: rebel flounder at August 27, 2015 02:04 AM (Vf5rR) Secret information is kept completely apart from the regular world. Much of it is on paper ONLY and can only be reviewed in special secure facilities with specified standards for locks, etc. Some of it can be reviewed on a special network COMPLETELY separate from the internet -- as in, a computer can be in the secret world or in the regular world, but never in both....and once in one, it can't be moved to the other. Every man or woman who has dealt with secret information has been informed about the rules and the protocols involved in maintaining this wall. It's much like the protocols for treating Ebola patients -- you put the gowns on in a particular order, you disinfect at these steps, you use these tools to put on protection and these other tools to take it off. The secret data on Hillary's servers is essentially the same as finding a bloodstained surgical towel that tests positive for Ebola in the Director of an Ebola clinic's personal laundry. You can argue about it being not very much, or that it would have been laundered with bleach, or that it was caught in time, or that it never got out into the real world, or any other excuse you might want to use....but the fact that secret information was found on the other side of the wall means that protocols were blown. If the Ebola clinic's Director wanted to do the right thing, he'd go into 42-day quarantine, he'd spill all of his contacts, people in hazmat suits would be all over his house, his car, his office, his clinic....every employee would be interviewed extensively as to their knowledge of the protocols and their execution -- and rightly so, because people's lives depended on getting this stuff right. Just like leaking lists of dissidents in despotic regimes, identifying a US mole in a foreign government, or revealing interception and decryption capabilities might. That's why the law has significant penalties for those who bridge that gap, or sit silent when they know that gap has been bridged, or try to cover-up the method by which the bridge occurred. David Petraeus got nailed for breaching the designated protocols even though nothing was leaked. Nobody caught Ebola when Petraeus left some sample vials in his home fridge submerged in bleach -- it was possibly more safe than if he'd left them at the clinic -- but it left them outside the wall if a tornado hit, or burglars, or the housecleaners threw them out, or his wife threw them at his girlfriend. The protocols may seem nonsensical, they may seem petty, the information may seem inconsequential, it may seem like a smear....but the protocols have clearly been violated, and they were seriously and professionally engineered to compartmentalize and minimize risk (better than the CDC's Ebola protocols). In response to the question, "Do you have a personal connection to anyone involved in this case?", I replied, "Well, haven't we met before? I think I know you. Was it at a party...?" The lawyer always gets flustered and denies everything, but then the other lawyer inevitably uses one his his exemptions to kick me out.

Most of what I know about the diff between secret and not I learned here.....but, get this, confirmed in the real world. The deflections that the Clintonites will throw about "it shouldn't have been secret in the first place" or "it didn't go anywhere when it was sitting on a regular computer" completely miss the fact that there was a hole in the wall. Millions of lives depend on that wall being solid, and it was designed to stay that way. Posted by: cthulhu at August 27, 2015 03:36 AM (NLkSN) 551

And what's seriously effed up is that the President has the right to see most any Secret information that he/she knows about as the Supreme Commander, CinC and Head of State.
Yet Obama could not receive a confidential clearance let alone a secret or top secret or ultra secret. (actually they usually will clear a person for one degree higher clearance than what they will normally encounter or use in their job). That may be Hillary's parthian shot. Posted by: The Political Hat at August 27, 2015 03:36 AM (0TXlm) I had a situation about 25 years ago where I left my employer under honorable (but strained) circumstances and their office was across the street from the courthouse. I got a jury-duty summons and I wrote a letter back saying that it probably wouldn't be good if I encountered my ex-coworkers or management when I went out to lunch during a trial. Even though I could have been called to serve at a couple of other local courts at the time, and I've since moved twice into different jurisdictions, I just don't get called. I think I've gotten the coveted "intelligent psychotic ramblings" classification. Posted by: cthulhu at August 27, 2015 03:51 AM (NLkSN) 555

I drove one of those Pinto Deathmobiles, for real. By the time I got it, it already had over 100,000 miles on it. It was a real firecracker. Zero to 60 in something like 15 seconds. Zero to 70 in never. I don't think it could do 70, for real.
It had the "anti-blow-up" modification to the gas tank, which was just a large piece of blow-molded plastic. The floor boards rotted out, so I bought the hood off an old Ford Maverick and did some tin-snipping, pop-riveting, and caulking. voila, new floor boards... Covered them with lime green shag carpeting. A real "babe magnet," that car was. It was a mess, but it was my first car... so I adored it. And, yes, I put an AM/FM/Cassette player AND 6X9" JENSENS on the first day. Because that's what you did back in the late 70's... Posted by: RobM1981 at August 27, 2015 08:05 AM (zurJC) 600

The botched helicopter rescue was due to the fact that it was a joint military action which required coordination of the armed forces. Coordination that didn't exist because of the growth of inter-service rivalry which caused each service to create technical silos that did not mesh technically. This was corrected by the Goldwater and Nichols act in 1986 and is a big reason why our military is so effective.
