Costco sells imported shrimp that were fed by slave labor in Thailand, lawyers in San Francisco charged Wednesday in a consumer lawsuit that seeks to halt the imports and demands refunds for its California customers.

Held captive by traffickers who pocket their wages, the laborers, many of them Burmese, work as long as 20 hours a day, seven days a week, sometimes while shackled, the suit said. Some former slave laborers have reported being whipped and electrically shocked.

Costco, as one of the largest companies in the world, is able to dictate the terms by which shrimp are produced and supplied to it, the suit said. Costco publicly represents that it does not tolerate human trafficking and slavery in its supply chain, the suit said, and should be held to its words.

So, the lawers get millions, the California customers get tens and the shrimp slaves get jack.

I liked the article complaining that Trump basically said people don't care about policy papers and he did it for the press. As much as it pains me to say it, he is right. Elections are not won or lost on policy papers. It would be better if people paid more attention to the details, but reality is they don't. An uninvolved public is a two-edged sword. The GOPe and Democrats like it when it suits them. When it gives them Trump, they don't like it.

46 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

I don't care for poetry, but while trawling the web yesterday, I came across a little thing that gave me that grab at your heart that you get when something affects you.

You may or may not have heard of Don Marquis. He was a journalist and writer, famous in the Teens and Twenties for his columns in the NY Evening Sun and Evening Tribube. His most famous creation, however, was the cockroach "archy." Marquis' conceit was that archy had been a free-verse poet in his earlier life and now left poems on Marquis' typewriter, all in lower case and without punctuation because he couldn't operate the shift key.

Here is the poem that got me: the lesson of the moth. It was the conclusion that gave me that awful wrench in the heart:

My niece starts 5th grade next week. She likes to make PowerPoint presentations on Papa's computer, because that's what they do at school instead of writing paragraphs. I was helping her make one last week, and we had Wikipedia open to check some dates and steal some pictures, and she starts copying words into her presentation...

Me: Do you know what "facade" means?
Her: No.
Me: Why is it on this slide, then?
Her: I don't know...
Me: Let's take that out and talk about the building with words you know...
Her: I don't know any words!
Me: *rummaging in Papa's liquor cabinet*

Meanwhile, she gets bullied by at school for not being stupid enough to fit in, but her mother is just like our mother and her society life is more important than getting her kid into a safe place where she can actually be taught instead of warehoused. Ho-hum.

Kids don't memorize or learn rote work much anymore. Their knowledge is heavily limited by the battery percentage on their smartphones. I've seen college-bound teenagers who can't divide by 10 without a calculator. It's not much of a surprise that the standardized testing is therefore downgrading the importance of basic memorized facts and rote work. Sadly, those two things could be done by kids even a little below average, so of course we have to curve the tests more so they can still pass...

92 Hilary quite probably released more classified/sensitive/secret information by orders of magnitude than Snowden.

Different stuff:

Manning: Operational Traffic exposing how we act and put individuals at risk. Should have been shot, in theater.
Snowden: Exposed technical sources and methods, blinding us and invalidating trillions in investments. Needs to be shot on a Moscow street some evening, just to send a message.
Hilary: Exposed intentions and decision making at a senior levels. Prison for life, plus 10.

Each a different flavor, hard to prioritize.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the corruption behind some of the profs using specific textbooks. Those profs get paid for using said textbook. "Costco sells imported shrimp that were fed by slave labor in Thailand..."

I wondered what made them so tasty.

Actually, this is hard to believe. Costco and Walmart buy these commodities in such volume that they have product specialists who follow the supply chain from beginning to end, just to avoid anything like this.

We're not talking about a guy who might visit the shrimp farm once every few months. This person would be there basically all the time, assuring quality control, managing inventories, overseeing cleanliness and temperatures of refrigerated shipping containers, planning - based on varying production - shortages or sales.

It's hard to hide slaves in this environment. Also, the largest retailers in the world don't need the hassle of doing business like that to save a few cents per pound on seafood.

I would look to the source of this story for more clarity, perhaps the Louisiana Shrimp Producers Association.

Putting aside the dreck, drivel and lies that are in most college textbooks, from a purely marketing standpoint you have to ask:
a) what is the cost of designing/printing/binding the book

Ace and Schmidt shared the same view of Sarah Palin, so they've got a common base of east coast elitism in that sense. However, Ace suffers from the same affliction as most political writers - the need to make the transition to TV pundit.

From observing how people have made the transition in the past, these blog writers believe they have to put up a façade of evenhandedness (read "Conservative Bashing) in order to get the CNN invite.

If they suck enough dick, they are considered "reasonable" and "thoughtful".

Ace is a good writer and probably one of the more honest people out there, but he still sees himself with a bowtie sitting across the table from Mica.

Also, the more you agree with insufferable twits like Charles CW Cooke, the more cocktail parties you get invited to.

Which betters your chances of getting laid.

Which is the whole point.

Hence, my wife getting pissed when chapters of her book show up here and there as xerox copies.

As an aside, we have street vendors who sell movie and TV scripts and I guarantee you that they have no rights to do so. And it takes money out of Writers Guild pension and welfare.

But, with college textbooks, things will start changing when e-book versions appear. Or won't. Another example of how screwed up the tuition system and academia in general is.

Dunno how it is for people in your wife's position, JJ, but experience tells me that publishers DO expect authors to turn out books for something closely related to "free."

My first experience with an offer to write a book instead of magazine articles was with a reputable publisher in the field. Dude turned out beautiful (costly) books, really, well designed and nicely printed. I was jazzed when he contacted me; after I had spent all of ten minutes belting out an outline, he was ready for a contract.

I could have lived for the better part of a week on the "advance" offered, would have had to foot the bill for all my expenses (travel, etc.) and the percentage I would get from each sale was roughly 50% below pitiful.

My bank account and I thought it over, weighed the potential return from a) spending a year or more on the book and b) writing another magazine article. No prizes for guessing which choice won.

Oh, there's a lot of that kind of theft going on. But it *is* theft. Internet-savvy kids can find the books out there. But now consider the publisher's perspective: if you know the book is going to be stolen, you're going to up the price to compensate. So it's the honest suckers who get screwed.

If half of each book wasn't colorful pictures of people doing stupid stuff, and if they didn't have 3-inch margins and lots of inane "cool fact" boxes, they wouldn't be so expensive. The books look like something out of Sesame Street these days. Of course, the kids want that, so...

True story: a friend was using Schaum's Guide to College Physics, a $20 book, as the primary resource for a high school class he taught. A parent complained about the kids not having a "real" textbook. Now: $175 book.

I don't think e-books will solve the problem. You can get a lot of textbooks in e-book form and the prices are still pretty steep. Plus you can't resell an e-book. It's perfect for locking in the customer.

I firmly believe Team Obama controls the outcome of the Hillery investigations, and therefore, her fate as a Presidential candidate.

Crowley gets two things wrong though: It's not about controlling his legacy, it's almost certainly more about controlling the possible investigations and prosecutions that come from either a Republican or someone who hates them as much as Team Hillery.

Second, she acts like Obama himself drives this stuff. Which, if anyone is paying attention, of course is silly. She quotes something about him saying he gets his info on his Admin's scandals from the news, and that he rarely watches the news. As if that's a contradiction.

It's not a contradiction if THAT guy, the one occupying the chair, isn't the bus driver. He's a passenger. He's been telling people that ever since he was elected, and nobody wants to take his word for it. We want to assume some mythical power HE has, to be both above the fray, and not interested in the fray, and somehow controlling the fray.

He's a figurehead. I don't know how many different ways to say that. The brains of the operation is that rotten little troll, Valjar. Always has been.

193 The thing about physics, calc, chem books is that they are essentially the same book from semester to semester as you all surmise. But they apply a random tweak to all the problems at the end of the chapter. Some time mixing the order or better yet subtle changes to the parameters.

So if you use an outdated book you'll always get the answers wrong. Profs are encouraged to assign off the newest additions . The way around this was to have friends that go in on one addition of the new and everyone else buys a few semester old at a used campus book store or now a days online. Split among 10 people it is not too bad.
