Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread 8/18/2015 (tmi3rd)Good evening, everyone... running a little late this evening. Let's get to it... More below the fold...How Art Became Irrelevant For a generation or more, the American public has been thoroughly alienated from the life of the fine arts while, paradoxically, continuing to enjoy museums for the sake of sensation and spectacle, much as it enjoyed circuses a century ago. The public accepts that it has nothing important to say about who we are, though it does occasionally rouse itself when something is at stake that does reflect our collective values. When Daniel Libeskind proposed rebuilding the World Trade Center in the academically fashionable deconstructivist style, the public outcry resulted in his being replaced and the construction of a sober and dignified tower. A similar outcry has delayed the building of Frank Gehry’s perversely anti-heroic memorial to Dwight D. Eisenhower, which might yet be realized (never underestimate the power of bureaucratic stealth). But these are exceptions to the pattern of a dormant and indifferent public. This estrangement has been a disaster for the arts, which need to draw inspiration from the society and culture that is its substrate. It is a myth that an art withdrawn from the realm of public inspection and disapproval is a freer and superior art. The impulse to evade censure can inspire raptures of ingenuity. (The passage of the prim Hays Code in 1932, which led to four decades of censorship in Hollywood, increased the sophistication and wit of American films by a magnitude.) We hear much about art enriching the human experience, which is an agreeable platitude. But it is the other way round. The human experience is needed to enrich art, and without a meaningful living connection to the society that nurtures it, art is a plucked flower. I'd add something to this from the performance perspective- there aren't a whole lot of new works out there that create new heroes for us to get behind and define childhoods by (does anyone really think of Ana and Elsa as the Luke Skywalker or Han Solo of this generation?). So much of new productions of operas, musicals, movies, et cetera, are aimed at showing us what an evil country the United States is, as opposed to giving us people who are without question the Good Guys. My Choice For Tweet Of The Day
THAT'S gonna leave a mark... ...And Tonight's Music Selection... Eric Johnson is one of the most delightful people I've ever met in the business. Couldn't be nicer, or more thoughtful, and MY GOD, can the man play and write. This is my favorite tune by him. Light content night- y'all have fun! As ever, if you need to get a hold of me, you can always find me on Twitter. Thanks for reading! -tmi3rd Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Eisenhower in his own words:
http://insidethegate.com/2011/07/president-dwight-d-eisenhower-a-communist/ By all means read this. The blogger intended that title to end with a question mark, and answers that question "no". Eisenhower seems most proud that he saved Iran from Mossadegh: who began his term as Iran's Peron and, many feared, would continue to become its Castro. True, a generation later, Iran fell to someone even worse but that wasn't Eisenhower's fault so much as the fault of Bunny Boy. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at August 18, 2015 10:51 PM (AVEe1) 56

Here's an interesting discussion from FiveThirtyEight about the potential for a truly disruptive GOP campaign season.
Nate Silver thinks the chances of a nominee not being made during the primaries is around 80%, if I understand his point properly. If he's right, that means the convention (and its Rules!) will be important for the first time in my memory. Basically, the group thinks we will have to contend with a very angry donor class from Thanksgiving through the early part of the primary season, followed by resignation and deal-making. Interestingly, they think Kasich is faking moderation (and that he's really a conservative in disguise), which I'm having a hard time believing, and they think Cruz scares the party power structure. http://53eig.ht/1EBs135 Posted by: MTF at August 18, 2015 10:59 PM (PxqU/) Posted by: RWC - TEAM ANTI-TWANLOC at August 18, 2015 10:59 PM (XAFOu) 95

I'm the only conservative at our regular Saturday night poker game. We usually don't talk politics, but they asked me what I thought of Bernie Sanders. I said he sure looked weak giving up his podium to those two loudmouth protesters last week. They said that "those protesters were just Tea Party plants; look it up!" Then I said I won't vote for a self-avowed socialist. They replied "oh yeah, well then how about when Cheney shot his lawyer in the face, huh?"
That's how crazy Dems are. All of their premises are wrong, and on top of that, they can't make a coherent argument. There is no effective way to communicate with them politically, because they live on Bizarro World. I am content to take their money at hold-em, though. My previous experience in this was in a sort of "just in time" manufacturing that turned into "never quite on time or in sufficient quantity" but it did serve as a pretext to "Scream at Kindltot a lot", so for some participants it was a raving success. I've seen Eric Johnson perform 4 times in DFW. One performance at the Caravan of Dreams, he gave 5 encores which included an amazing rendition of April Come She Will by Simon and Garfunkle. The man (and his band, Alien Love Child) is amazing. It's the only band I've ever witnessed actually perform live fade-outs at the end of their songs. The very first concert I attended, I'd never even heard of the guy. I stood with my jaw on the floor the entire night.

Ted, thanks for making my point for me.
That song is just depressing. Would much rather hear "Carry On Wayward Son" (even if it is for the 9,000th time) or "Fight Fire with Fire," or even "Point of Know Return" (not great but at least upbeat; Kansas always seemed to be trying to bridge the gap between Queen and Styx with some spiritualism thrown in for good measure). Vendette, Carly Simon actually was originally half a folk duo with her sister Lucy in the 1960s. They had a single titled "Winken, Blinken and Nod."
And IMHO she started off okay. "Anticipation" and "You're So Vain" are halfway decent rockers. But yeah, she was another one who basically peaked really early. Posted by: qdpsteve at August 18, 2015 11:30 PM (ntObR) 248

218 Today I got (had) to sit in on a short LEAN production seminar. This is the philosophy of Toyota and Shingo and Ohno applied outside of manufacturing sort of thing.
My previous experience in this was in a sort of "just in time" manufacturing that turned into "never quite on time or in sufficient quantity" but it did serve as a pretext to "Scream at Kindltot a lot", so for some participants it was a raving success. What has your experience with LEAN been? Posted by: Kindltot at August 18, 2015 11:24 PM (3pRHP) If you have workcenters that can pivot to different tasks easily, you can use various LEAN concepts to ensure that shrinkage and waste is efficiently swept from your shop floor. If, on the other hand, your workcenters are highly optimized towards one task each, you're going to end up with a lot of "line down" time and yield issues. GnuBreed, the entire Golden Earring that contains "Twilight Zone", "Cut" from 1982, is also surprisingly good.
Plus I admit it was on an obscure European label, "21 Records," that I recall *loving* the logo for. I know that's weird, but still. I also always thought the 1980s-era Mercury LP logo was really cool; it literally almost glowed in the dark. Posted by: qdpsteve at August 18, 2015 11:46 PM (ntObR) 314

Posted by: qdpsteve at August 19, 2015 12:07 AM (ntObR) That was worthy of a spit take. And all this talk of Golden Earring makes me think that I rather like Dutch rock bands of that era. If you have workcenters that can pivot to different tasks easily, you can use various LEAN concepts to ensure that shrinkage and waste is efficiently swept from your shop floor. If, on the other hand, your workcenters are highly optimized towards one task each, you're going to end up with a lot of "line down" time and yield issues. Posted by: cthulhu at August 18, 2015 11:44 PM (EzgxV) I love the concept because I hate waste and dicking around participating in someone's power/control fantasy-cum-OCD therapy, but I am really concerned that it will prove un-workable because servicing someon's power-control-OCD needs has become the ultimate reason for existence. That section was better than the inspirational speaker who was using Scientology terms in his speech, and on questioning, was completely unaware of Scientology terminology. If we have a worm or keystroke or malware & the hacker dropped it into the root, how would I know the difference? Posted by: Adriane the IT Critic ... at August 19, 2015 02:52 AM (qOsoH) Dropping a keylogger on someone is among the blackest of black malware. It is very nasty and very difficult to detect. I was lucky/wildly paranoid -- I had been doing a "heartbeat" ping from A->B over a number of days. This proves that you can send from A and receive from B......but in the real world it means you have ownership of A but a persistent B connection. When I tried to do a heartbeat from B->A, it failed -- which meant that I didn't have ownership of B with a persistent B connection. When I investigated B's ownership, I couldn't remember/had it captured/had it cracked the password to my admin account, so I forced it -- and lodged a complaint about giving out my admin credentials.....and when I got a response that only authentic Admin over B were used, I knew Admin had been compromised -- which, like the classic "get out -- the phone calls are from inside your home!" changed the scene. If you know you have a keylogger, you need to shut down internet access for all of your accounts. The best way is to show up in a branch, proffer ID, and request it. You shouldn't enable internet access to any accounts before you've done some security work. Posted by: cthulhu at August 19, 2015 03:08 AM (EzgxV) 576

I thought the main problem was birds getting sucked into the engines.
Birdstrike could crack windshields ... Birds, or zombies, going thru the engines can cause flameout, but usually {high altitude} can get restarted. Metallic debris that damages turbine blades, not so much. Birds through BOTH engines just after take off left little room and no time to restart engines, hence the glide into the Hudson ... iirc ... Good morning pixel people. I still can't post from the house although I can from work. Usually the ONT is at around 500+ comments before I start reading and by the time I catch up most have deserted to stare at the backs of their eyelids. #twoweeks Posted by: Gmac - banned at home - #twoweeks at August 19, 2015 06:01 AM (4pjhs) 601

Eric would come to Charleston for a week at a time and play Myskyn's, a smallish live music venue that hosted some of the best live music seen anywhere. Eric, Kyle Brock or Rob Alexander on bass and either the late Bill Maddox or Tommy Taylor drumming would pack the joint and just KILLED it every night. My personal favs from that time were ANY Hendrix he did, and their mashup of Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance" & Miles Davis' "Directions", played simultaneously. They played lots of Electromagnets tunes, like "Minus Mufflers" (another fav), "Dry Ice" and "Motion". Pure sonic assault. Incredible. And yes, Eric is a great guy- I talked a lot with him, & we had him and band over for supper one evening. Built him and Kyle some gear. Eric launched me on the guitar tone quest.
Side note- the 2nd " Austin City Limits" EJ show (where he's in the marching band uniform) was videoed the gig after his last Myskyn's appearance, after they moved to the big club. So we got to see that video set live-different guitar, though, a new LP blue Fender maple neck Strat with Laces that Fender gave him to try. Posted by: Bilco at August 19, 2015 11:46 AM (u3smi) 607

Ayn Rand nailed this PERFECTLY: "Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to the artist's metaphysical value-judgements" Says much about: (1) What passes for art, and; (2) Who "enjoys" it, and why. BTW, every word in that definition is significant. Posted by: V15 Type lll- I'm In The Groove! at August 19, 2015 12:02 PM (u3smi) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0601 seconds. |
