Matt Yglesias, Intellectual

That number is far off from the accurate one. In the Vendee region alone (a region of Western France, on the Atlantic Ocean), there was a slaughter of spectacular size.

The French Revolution is really better thought of as the Paris Revolution, because Paris was the capital of the Revolution and the Terror, and most of the revolutionary fervor was in Paris.

Out in places like the Vendee, the peasants did not want to slaughter their lords or their clergy -- and fought back against the troops sent by Paris to "pacify" them.

The "Infernal Columns," as they were called, ravaged the Vendee in a butcherie called by many the first genocide.

With this came formal orders for forced evacuation; also, a 'scorched earth' policy was initiated: farms were destroyed, crops and forests burned and villages razed. There were many reported atrocities and a campaign of mass killing universally targeted at residents of the Vendee regardless of combatant status, political affiliation, age or gender.

From January to May 1794, 20,000 to 50,000 Vendean civilians were massacred by the Infernal columns of the general Louis Marie Turreau.

...

General Westermann reported to his political masters at the Convention: "The Vendee is no more... According to your orders, I have trampled their children beneath our horses' feet; I have massacred their women, so they will no longer give birth to brigands. I do not have a single prisoner to reproach me. I have exterminated them all."

Some historians believe this letter never existed. [Um, you should know there are a lot of Jacobin apologists, to this day: Actual fans of Robspierre's mass slaughters.-- ace.]

...

Estimates of those killed in the Vendean conflict -- on both sides --- range between 117,000 and 450,000, out of a population of around 800,000.

And remember, that's the Vendee alone, a not-terribly-large or populous area (it's basically a good-sized county). That doesn't include all the guillotines working every day and night in Paris (I think women were guillotined at night, to not upset spectators), nor the other big burgs around the place.

But then, Yglesias has already outed himself as a Jacobin:

So, Matt Yglesias is now doing pig-ignorant, Aren't-I-Daringly-Contrarian #HotTakes about events he just learned about, but which happened over 220 years ago.

But that was just the amuse-bouche for the entree of stupid he had planned for later in the day.

Later on, Jonathan Chait, a fellow lefty, wrote an article protesting the claims from some on the left that any support for Joe Biden was ipso facto sexist -- because why would you oppose Hillary, if not for sexism?

So he criticized another lefty making that claim, and suggested that some lefties were a little too quick to claim that all political disagreements were due to sexism or racism.

Well! That upset our little dumb Jacobin, who immediately began protesting that some people (hint, hint) were too quick to claim that there were reasons besides sexism and racism for opposing leftist policies.

Which led to Chait asking Yglesias to defend the article making the assertion that any pro-Biden agitation was sexist.

Eliciting this typically Ygelsian response:

Well.

I keep asking this, and I know it's rhetorical, but: Aren't alleged, soi-disant Elite Intellectuals required to read a f***ing book on occasion, or at least be casually familiar with easily-adduced and well-known facts?

Or is it just a matter of wearing Asshole Spectacles and being a member of the Jacobin Left?

Rhetorical, I know. I know full well what the answer is.

3 IF supporting Joe Biden is sexist against Hillary
THEN there must be no other differences between them than gender
SO Joe Biden is identical to Hillary except for gender

Wouldn't that make supporting Hillary sexist against Biden?

If they're the same, and the only reason to choose one over the other is gender, then no matter which you choose, you're a sexist.

91 IF supporting Joe Biden is sexist against Hillary
THEN there must be no other differences between them than gender
SO Joe Biden is identical to Hillary except for gender

Wouldn't that make supporting Hillary sexist against Biden?

If they're the same, and the only reason to choose one over the other is gender, then no matter which you choose, you're a sexist.

100 i heard the podcast actually discusses the butchery in the vendee -- which Yglesias then just ignored, or wasn't listening to, because he was busy constructing his newest #HotTake.

Yep. The guy who does the podcast is really mild-mannered (part of the reason I like it) so he doesn't get emotional about stuff. He's more sardonic and sarcastic about things.

I don't know if he actually did numbers for the Vendee but he mentions it several times.

164 I am currently reading a compendium of contemporary accounts from the discovery of Cape Cod through the 1950's. One Elijah Cobb had a great story. He sailed for Spain during the Fr. Rev., tended North due to reports of Algerian attacks on American ships, was seized by the French Navy. He was held under a sort of house arrest in a "hottel" while the stores on his ship were plundered by the French. When granted an opportunity to seek redress, he got the run around from French Officials, until he made the trek to Paris and chanced to lodge next door to an English-speaking Frenchman with contacts to Robespierre. Cobb was granted an audience, and was immediately paid his due. Two weeks later, as Cobb was readying to depart back to Boston, he watched Robespierre beheaded.

165 Yglesias went to a posh Upper East Side school (Dalton) and then went to Harvard. He got an undergrad degree in Philosophy.

For those who don't know about Harvard beyond the mystique, they've had a grade inflation issue since the Vietnam draft. You basically get a C for not dying during the semester.

Harvard's grad schools are still fairly good, and some really bright teachers are present, but undergrad is only sustained by the fact that Harvard is so selective. It's not rigorous, at all. Once you get in, you can coast.

Some fun exposes have happened where they test Harvard students on US history before and after school. They do worse after. Same with some other basic topics, like Social Studies.

Among the most humiliating drownings were what was termed the 'underwater marriages'. These drownings were also called 'republican baptisms' or 'republican marriages.'[1

276 If the crime families changed their names every time the old boss got whacked, what kind of message does that send to the foot soldiers?

"So am I a Gambino this week or is it an Anastasia? Boss!! Am so confused!"

It would make the 'staying power' of the various crime families tenuous and who owes loyalty to wisps of the wind when the wind comes out of the barrel of a snub-nosed .38?

Fun thing. I was in Montreal for a course I had to take for work and I got to practice spoken French with a Belgian PhD student. It was really fun. & I was surprised at how much of what she said I understood without much effort. I started out a bit rough, but after I got warmed up it wasn't very hard. I was very pleased for that opportunity.

What I would like is too have a decent resource to be able to learn what should be my native tongue. (Yes, the only language this African can speaks really fluently is English. Sigh.)

295 I spent an hour today at the site of The Battle of Rock Harbor (War of 1812). Been fishing at RH since I was a toddler, but only recently got the details of the battle. Brits are privateering all through the bay, commandeer an American pilot to steer them safely to harbor, he deliberately grounds the ship on a sandbar, jumps overboard and alerts the townspeople of Orleans, Brewster, Eastham to show up and drive the brig away. The last road you pass before reaching the Harbor is now called "Defiance Lane".

I was in Portugese class with a student who spoke Italian at home. He never cracked the book, just spoke Italian with a Portugese accent (but eventually he did have to learn the spelling). My ex-brother in law is fluent in Spanish, and spent a year in Italy speaking Spanish with an Italian accent. I think, based on that sample of two, that if you speak one Romance language you pretty much speak them all. Reading, writing, and spelling are a different story.

From 1882 to 1968, "...nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress, and three passed the House. Seven presidents between 1890 and 1952 petitioned Congress to pass a federal law."[7] In 1920 the Republican Party promised at its national convention to support passage of such a law. In 1921 Leonidas C. Actually ace Portuguese is as easy as Spanish. Brazilian version is easier to pronounce than continental/African version. Regional versions (from Bahia, or Rio) are mostly a question of giria (slang) and pronunciation - Bahia/Salvador has a sing-song cadence probably from Yoruba.

But really the way to learn it is to take a few months of the basics in NY, then spend 6 months travelling throughout Brazil. Set up stories to do/people to interview, check into teaching English at the ubiquitous English language schools in each city you visit. Watch TV, esp. the novellas (best prime time soap operas, sort of invented them). Before you know, it, you're not only speaking Portuguese, but you've got tons of friends and, uh, there's a very good chance of, um, "other" benefits as well.

Telling you for a friend.

You know, the other day I had an argument with a committed progressive. He tried to tell me why we should all go solar, and he didn't understand why we weren't, and obviously it was just like...the corporations keeping us from this wonderful technology.

So I asked him how a solar panel works. He said "the sunlight hits the panel and makes electricity." I said, but HOW does it make electricity? He looked at me blankly. "It just does." I asked him if solar made economic sense. "Sure, because the sunlight is free!" I said, yeah, but the solar panel isn't.He looked at me blankly and mumbled something about the corporations.

Honestly, conservatives are just as dumb as progressive, but there is one thing we do know. And that is there are all sorts of things we don't know.

chique, I could be wrong, but I believe the sing-song cadence one hears in the Salvadoran version of Brazilian Portuguese (not sure it qualifies as a dialect)indeed comes from an African language - that of the slaves brough into that part of Brazil more than any other. Salvador's the blackest city in Brazil, has the most distinctive and vibrant particular culture, and it makes sense that the local language ("baiano" from Bahia, the state's name) would be influenced by that.

If one has any language aptitude at all, Portuguese is easy for native English speakers.

JackStraw, Finnish is a mystery because it's not related to Romance or Germanic languages, more to Turkish or Mongolian, as you probably know. Watched a movie on the Winter War recently (subtitles), and wow - whole stretches without a recognizable word, a cognate, anything.

Only language I started and gave up on was Vietnamese. Of course I was "older" by that time, and already had 2 or 3 under my belt, and was losing the enthusiasm of youth.

I'm half convinced that all tone languages are gigantic deception operations - nobody would really talk like that, they just pretend to that system to fool foreigners (like the classic Gary Larson cartoon, with the cows standing and smoking once the tourists are gone, I think tone language countries just put on a show of speaking in this ridiculous fashion)

Nice thing about Vietnamese though is that it's the only tone language using the Latin alphabet (thanks to a conversion done by, I believe, a Portuguese Jesuit priest back in the day). So you can read it without attempting to understand its absurd tones (diacritical marks allow you to get the "tone" contribution to meaning when reading it). So signs are not hard to read once your vocabulary builds a bit.

435 But what does Ezra think about the French Revolution?? We desperately need BOTH of the poles of genius at Vox to weigh in and press back the shadows of ignorance.

436 1. Finns will be the first to tell you they are not Scandinavians.
2. Duh.
3. Finnish is not an Indo-European language.

438 I know someone who speaks Frisian. There are like a dozen people left who speak it.

Klingon would be more useful.

Your all wrong. The Finns are most closely related to the Irish. Don't you know that Finn is an Irish word?! Where did you people go to school? You should have gone to Harvard, like me. Then you'd be smart!

As my old finnish girlfriend used to say:

"If a guy smiles and says hello to you while walking down the street in Helsinki, he is either one of four things:

A. Crazy
B. Drunk
C. American
D. All the above.

Weird!
There's no good Spanish word for "weird". (Prolly why Borges didn't start a pulp mag like "tales of the Weird", tho' he had it in him. Mallarme, too, but the French.... 'Nuff said.)
Radical translation assesses the liklihood there may be no shared ideas.

How do you tell a Finnish extrovert?
He's the guy talking to YOUR shoes.
Of course, technology changed all that.
Don't get me started on the value of Finnlanders to modernism!
OMG!
The architecture, the music, "Meek Heritage", the Apostolic Lutheranism!
I confess I cannot listen to the 2nd Symphony of Sibelius without his intended effect.

448 The first time I read Flashman my sons were little. They would ask "What is so funny Daddy, read it to us!" My wife would shake her head and mouth "NO!" They read them in college as bored college students avoiding homework.

450 I don't know much about the French Revolution... taking it at face value about the "low" body count maybe next he should read about the Inquisition which had a very low body count spread out over centuries and yet it is always cited as some big crime of Christianity.

Same with the Crusades... there was a high body count there but it was a defensive war - at least in the beginning.

451 Anybody who's paying attention by now understands that Matt Ygelesias SIMPLY DOES NOT READ. He has admitted he doesn't like to read. And obviously, he doesn't do it. He "listens" to a program about the French Revolution. He admits not reading Chait's article (which, admittedly, are often unreadable). Matt Yglesias does not like to read, and he thinks he doesn't have to. So he doesn't.
