ahh. Haven't read the article yet, but I often say, I wish I'd known, when our kids were little, what our faithful and brilliant dog has taught me in the last decade.
He wandered up on us when he was young, probably tossed out by somebody when he became no long a cute puppy but a rowdy young dog. (Told my son to go chase off the stray. Son ran up to dog, yelling and waving his arms. Dog just laid down. I knew we had a new dog from that moment. So, Son got to name him.)
Dog had some adjustment problems, spent his early years mostly tied up, but eventually learned his territory and duties and now the leash is only used when we're in town and the tether never. He taught us, in return, to trust his judgment and dog-wisdom, something that didn't come easily to me.
Of course, if any of our kids had been half-way as trainable, much less eager to please...!

I live in Commiefornia, where our governor doesn't need to drop acid in order to float serenely on a different cosmic plane.
As for Perry, he would be more impressive if he weren't coming out of a state system where governors are weak by design. The success of Texas in the last couple of years has a lot more to do with Texans generically than with one underpowered gubernatorial figure specifically.
I do endorse the Perry approach to coyote management, though.

But, last night's end of the "Mad Man" series was not about Don Draper finally reaching enlightenment with a bunch of hippies.
The series finally revealed itself as another "artist as a bastard to everyone and anyone around him because they don't matter as much as his moments of pure inspiration only he has no way of know when or where or how the inspiration comes".
Played as a comedy it would be "The Horse's Mouth" with Alec Guiness.
Instead, it was a long, drawn out, often poorly scripted version of "Moby Dick" with Don as the Ahab who finally got His Great White Whale.

Don used his experience with the hippies to create the "I'd like to teach the world to sing" Coke ad.
An ad considered to be one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time.
Any "enlightenment" came with him understanding that the cycle of nothingness/boring/ selfish existence and sudden enlightenment/usefulness as explained by the guy who dream of himself as a commodity.
Series went on way too long for that pay off.

I was in line for the drive through ATM this weekend and I included a bit of space between me and the car that was actually at the machine. I look behind me and one of the guys in the car has gotten out and seemed to be yelling at me to move forward? I wasn't totally sure if that's what he was saying because I do not get out of the car and have conversations with angry looking strangers at the ATM. But then the car in front of me left, I pulled forward and got my cash and left and nothing happened, so I don't know what that was.

Same rough physics-package size can suddenly produce hundreds of kilotons compared to tens of kilotons. Bigger thermonuke physics packages allow megaton-plus yields that can't be done with even the largest plausible fission bomb. Those will do a number on even a big city.

The campouts for this troop tend to be heavily attended by Scouts but less so by parents, so there always seem to be a lot of Scouts who need rides to and from the camps, to the activities, and so on.
This particular campout was a four hour drive. I gently floated the idea that if a driver is ferrying another kid around, maybe that kid's parents should chip in for gas or something. Well I'll tell you, I got all kinds of grief for that. One parent said that I was being a money grubber because I was going there anyway so what was the big deal. Some others said that they paid a lot in troop dues and so on, so they were a little put off by the question.
I didn't end up ferrying anyone else around but I did get a sense of...something...from the other parents who drove. Like I had committed some weird faux pas or something.
So opinion - out of line question or valid concern?

It was never much of a problem with my troop. I think we use to set a dollar amount for the trip, which included food, gas, admissions etc.
I never remember ever getting any money for gas. Usually I paid for the kids lunch if we stopped.
Some parents are leaches. Just be happy you have their sons.

I am cub scout leader and when i ride with someone else, i offer to split gas and tolls, they usually don't accept.
I am curious, are you a leader in the troop? Does the troop typically let parents come on weekend campouts? The troop we are affiliated with won't unless you are a leader, not just having youth protection certification, but a leader with the troop.
What I have heard from the troop though is that the kid of one parent will drive up and then the parent for another kid will drive them back. And it washes so they don't seek to get gas.

For a local trip last month I didn't think anything of it - it was about a 30 minute drive and IMO no big deal.
But this last one was four hours, which to me seems non-trivial.
I'm new to the troop but it seems to me a lot of parents are just dropping their kids off at the meeting point and then letting the Troop figure out how to get their kids to the campout. Seems odd to me to assume another parent is going to cheerfully assume responsibility for transporting one's kid.

We call these "puppy dog" parents. Their kid is just a puppy they drop off at the Kennel or BSA trip so they can head home and not have to worry about them.
These are the kids that get the most out of Scouts, because their parents are worthless. You can make a big difference in their lives.

I'm just a parent, though I've taken YPT. The troop has never given me grief for going to these campouts...though it seems it's because they need drivers! Seems that parents are invited along as a matter of course anyway. Never occurred to me that I wouldn't be allowed to go, although there strictness surrounding the tenting and all of that (as there should be...).

Interesting point. OK, so that makes me think of another question....
I've pretty much planned on attending all of these campouts with my son. Should I back off? I get that Boy Scouts is about instilling self-sufficiency and all of that, and I have no issue driving him and getting him from these things, but is it the norm that parents don't actually attend the campouts?

If you have a Scout background, you should go to help. If not, you might be a helicopter parent. Let your son go without you.
Just saying, I am an Eagle Scout, so I know the routine, but when I went, I left my sons alone. They were just another kid on the trip.

Troops vary a lot. The troop my pack is affiliated with won't let the parents stay, tell them to drop the scout and go, even if they have YP. Which is the way it was when i was (briefly) a boy scout in the early 80's. But each troop is different.

Well, the characters stay about the same. The character arcs are microscopic, but there.
However, remember the 1st episode where Don was on the top of his game, pitching an iconic ad, rocking the confidence, etc.
Then we see this morose guy with all these problems for the next few seasons.
That's the arc - Don only lives, only connects with others in these brief flashes of inspiration.
It ends with Don getting the Big One, His White Whale - Coke commercial.
All the rest of the stories are pretty much wallpaper and business while waiting for Don to muddle through, wrecking the lives of those around him because the "it" that he can't define and can't get is "inspiration".

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, they received a tip that illegal firearms and explosives were being stored in a shed, and the Eustis Police Department was going to be targeted because of recent run-ins with officers.

This. My husband and son are both assistant Scout masters. They've had wonderful experiences over the years. They've done all the High Adventure trips, too.
I served on the troop committee for several years. Never went on a campout with them. They needed that time for the two of them. Plus, "roughing it" to me is a Winnebago.

When I was a scout, there were two adults; one scoutmaster, and an assistant. Now, it seems the adult kid ratio is about 2:1 kids/adults. Again, when I was a scout, parents would team up and take turns droppng off scouts at the camps. No, several adults go, and there's a trailer, so the gear goes in that.
As you can see, dropping and running can be seen as being bad, but so might tagging along.

So that's what happened. Several people on FB were howling about the show, but I had no idea why.

Kurtz claimed yesterday that Stephanopoulos "made a mistake", parroting Stephy's own dissembling, and said he "misjudged" etc etc. Anyone might have sent the Clintons $75K, hidden it and then go on to advocate on their behalf against critics trying to highlight their corruption, says Kurtz. Anyone. Simple mistake (s).
Bullshit: ABC had a clear policy prohibiting this very sort of action and Stephy knowingly violated it. He agreed when employed not to do exactly what he did in this instance.

I had heard that they are deliberately deviating from the books now. The pompous jerk author is likely annoyed at the criticism he was receiving. That, and that most sentient beings predicted the end of the turgid series years ago.
What stung most was that the first two seasons were being hailed as being better than the books, because they edited what he wrote (much like how the first three Star Wars movies benefited from not being George lucas solo productions).
Still, George Martin is a prick, and HBO runs this kinda crap for ratings, so there ya go.

I think that I plowed through four (?) The last one was so convoluted, so damned odd, I stopped caring about anything or anyone. Thus, no further interest in going on. I get that in many cases, innocent people suffer, and that characters need not be sympathetic to be interesting. But I was left cold.

Well yes. The last two books were long rambly detours that didn't include half your favorite characters and added a bunch of assholes nobody cares about. So I don't mind that.
I just hate what they are doing with this particular story because it sucks and is gross and I want Ramsey to die like yesterday. I couldn't even watch the theon stuff last year.
Also they have cut all of the stuff I actually liked from this part of the story.

As other people have commented one of the things that makes GOT so weird is that it is more a 21st century cynic's view of middle-ages life. In reality, there were bad things that happened then as in anywhere else and in any other time, but there were also goodthings and good people in that time period. I want to see "Far From The Madding Crowd" before 5:30 I can pay $2.00 less on a ticket. That's one of the Hardy novels I( like I like sand have read a number o9f times. At least it has a somewhat happy ending, but Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene?! I don't see her as being right for the part physically and I didn't really like her performance as Daisy in "The Great Gtasby". She didn't seem physically right for that part either.

What exactly does the putative existence of a gun-running operation (partly) out of Benghazi to Syria do to change anything about the Benghazi disaster and scandal? Have never understood everyone's interest in this.
Benghazi was an incredible disaster because 1) a chief of mission and other personnel were murdered after being put in an absurdly unsecure position in an area of long-standing high threat levels 2) the political seniors (and "career" people like Morrell) engaged in bizarre, ludicrous, obviously mendacious public behavior to misrepresent the nature of the attack 3) the same people (with the cooperation of the LA County Sheriffs dept.) created the still unbelievable and disastrous spectacle of the US "punishing" the creator of some obscure controversial video in response to the murderous (and carefully directed) mobs in Cairo (basically discarding American moral leadership on matters of freedom that was tirelessly and rightly maintained through the long Cold War) 4) it demonstrated what an utter collapse there has been in the US press, that such absurd obviously false claims regarding a deadly serious matter could go without being shredded instantly and its purveyors hounded relentlessly 5) it demonstrated what a dumbed-down, effectively stupid and irresponsible electorate we now suffer under - that this debacle would have zero impact on an ongoing election campaign.
An arms transfer operation, which would be operating under a congressional "finding" for covert ops from the intel committees and with knowledge of congressional leadership, doesn't change any of this one way or the other (except perhaps to emphasize even more the deadly incompetence of the security arrangements and the presence of a chief of mission in Benghazi without an army of escorts).
Whatever. In a country where the top contending "opposition" presidential aspirants can't even intelligently addressa stupid gotcha question about Iraq, we are clearly far past the point of no return.

Your assuming that Obama followed the law and included Congress on whatever he was doing in Beghazi with arms transfers. Given Obama's history of lawlessness including his blatant ignoring of a federal courts order to stop giving amnesty to illegals that seem a bit generous to me.
It also flies directly in the face of Obama's insistence over the years that he wasn't supplying arms to militants in Syria.
Call me old fashion but I kind of like when politicians don't flat out lie to me.
