10 When will people learn that the AGW scam is not about helping the climate. The purveyors of this crap know that it doesn't have an impact. The object is to INCREASE taxes and reduce freedom. That has always been their goal and it hasn't changed.

11 From the Spengler-on-Cruz link:

"We need a president arrogant enough to ignore the foreign policy establishment. And Cruz is that man."

Scott Walker certainly isn't that man.

Would anyone on the right possibly have believed me if I had gone back in time just a little ways, and related how a GOP presidential aspirant would be talking proudly about how he was able to keep up with the deep insights of that widely respected foreign policy savant _Madeleine Albright_?

I disagree. It still has the connotation of everyone paying the same amount. LIV's will think millionaires will pay the same about as them. How about a "Balanced Tax?" It's balanced because you pay more taxes the more you earn.

Personally, I believe everyone should pay 1% in income tax regardless of income. Everyone should have skin in the game.

83 Back from reading the morning thread and feeding the pesks.

"What Having A Dog Can Teach You About Life"

ahh. Haven't read the article yet, but I often say, I wish I'd known, when our kids were little, what our faithful and brilliant dog has taught me in the last decade.

He wandered up on us when he was young, probably tossed out by somebody when he became no long a cute puppy but a rowdy young dog. (Told my son to go chase off the stray. Son ran up to dog, yelling and waving his arms. Dog just laid down. I knew we had a new dog from that moment. So, Son got to name him.)

Dog had some adjustment problems, spent his early years mostly tied up, but eventually learned his territory and duties and now the leash is only used when we're in town and the tether never. He taught us, in return, to trust his judgment and dog-wisdom, something that didn't come easily to me.

Of course, if any of our kids had been half-way as trainable, much less eager to please...!

Ha!

There is a 'bike night' at the local hooters. We have a twin peaks but they just opened last yearish. Most of these bikers are old I think. The young ones seem to run themselves off the road.

We have all these 'watch for motorcycles' add campaigns going and from the way most of them drive, I think the add campaign needs to be aimed at them. Like, 'Stay in your lane so cars can see you if you don't want to become a Darwin award'...

I live in Commiefornia, where our governor doesn't need to drop acid in order to float serenely on a different cosmic plane.

As for Perry, he would be more impressive if he weren't coming out of a state system where governors are weak by design. The success of Texas in the last couple of years has a lot more to do with Texans generically than with one underpowered gubernatorial figure specifically.

I do endorse the Perry approach to coyote management, though.

155 Oh, FFS.

Not that anyone cares.

But, last night's end of the "Mad Man" series was not about Don Draper finally reaching enlightenment with a bunch of hippies.

The series finally revealed itself as another "artist as a bastard to everyone and anyone around him because they don't matter as much as his moments of pure inspiration only he has no way of know when or where or how the inspiration comes".

Played as a comedy it would be "The Horse's Mouth" with Alec Guiness.

Instead, it was a long, drawn out, often poorly scripted version of "Moby Dick" with Don as the Ahab who finally got His Great White Whale.

(and Christina Hendricks as Queequeg....../jk)

Don used his experience with the hippies to create the "I'd like to teach the world to sing" Coke ad.

An ad considered to be one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time.

Any "enlightenment" came with him understanding that the cycle of nothingness/boring/ selfish existence and sudden enlightenment/usefulness as explained by the guy who dream of himself as a commodity.

Series went on way too long for that pay off.

263 Pakistan sells nuclear weapons? Awesome.

Thanks, Mr. President! Your leadership is inspiring.

Now, perhaps someone should tell Saudi Arabia that a single nuclear weapon (a basic one, in the 15KT range) makes for an awesome terror device, but as a military weapon it doesn't make a lot of sense.

You see, a single "Hiroshima Blast" won't actually level a city. You can see this modeled all over the interwebs. Try Nukemap if you want to see it. It's a ghastly, horrible thing - for sure. But you're not going to completely level Tehran without, say, 5 or 6 well aimed "gadgets."

And if you only have one... but the other guy has 20 or 30 or 50? Yeah, that's not a good idea.

That's why the game is "won" in the reactors. Iran is *making* bombs. North Korea is *making* bombs.

Not A bomb, but MANY bombs. This allows for some to fail in their mission while other succeed.

I was in line for the drive through ATM this weekend and I included a bit of space between me and the car that was actually at the machine. I look behind me and one of the guys in the car has gotten out and seemed to be yelling at me to move forward? I wasn't totally sure if that's what he was saying because I do not get out of the car and have conversations with angry looking strangers at the ATM. The Pakistanis have reportedly been working hard for a while now on jumping the gap from fission to fission-fusion. They had what appeared to be a fizzle-yield test a few years back.

Once the complexities of the Teller-Ulam scheme are worked out, and thermonuclear warheads become feasible, the scaling laws on warhead yield suddenly start to look a lot different.

Same rough physics-package size can suddenly produce hundreds of kilotons compared to tens of kilotons. Bigger thermonuke physics packages allow megaton-plus yields that can't be done with even the largest plausible fission bomb. Those will do a number on even a big city.

321 Speaking of Boy Scouts. Just got back from a weekend campout. Wouldn't mind a sense of the Horde on this....

The campouts for this troop tend to be heavily attended by Scouts but less so by parents, so there always seem to be a lot of Scouts who need rides to and from the camps, to the activities, and so on.

This particular campout was a four hour drive. I gently floated the idea that if a driver is ferrying another kid around, maybe that kid's parents should chip in for gas or something. Well I'll tell you, I got all kinds of grief for that. One parent said that I was being a money grubber because I was going there anyway so what was the big deal. Some others said that they paid a lot in troop dues and so on, so they were a little put off by the question.

I didn't end up ferrying anyone else around but I did get a sense of...something...from the other parents who drove. Like I had committed some weird faux pas or something.

So opinion - out of line question or valid concern?

330 I also don't get people who feel the need to back into parking spaces; it just wastes time and blocks traffic.

The explanation I got was from my brother in law who is, shall we say, familiar with the inner city.

He says it's prevalent in his area because the drivers have really crappy cars, and backing in makes it easier to jump start the car when they leave the store.

I never remember ever getting any money for gas. Usually I paid for the kids lunch if we stopped.

What I have heard from the troop though is that the kid of one parent will drive up and then the parent for another kid will drive them back. And it washes so they don't seek to get gas.

No idea.

For a local trip last month I didn't think anything of it - it was about a 30 minute drive and IMO no big deal.

But this last one was four hours, which to me seems non-trivial.

I'm new to the troop but it seems to me a lot of parents are just dropping their kids off at the meeting point and then letting the Troop figure out how to get their kids to the campout. Seems odd to me to assume another parent is going to cheerfully assume responsibility for transporting one's kid.

Posted by: Grampa Jimbo at May 18, 2015 09:51 AM (V70Uh)

Well, the characters stay about the same. The character arcs are microscopic, but there.

However, remember the 1st episode where Don was on the top of his game, pitching an iconic ad, rocking the confidence, etc.

Then we see this morose guy with all these problems for the next few seasons.

That's the arc - Don only lives, only connects with others in these brief flashes of inspiration.

399 EUSTIS, Fla. -Deputies in Marion County said they executed a search warrant after receiving a tip that a rocket launcher was going to be used to target Eustis police.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, they received a tip that illegal firearms and explosives were being stored in a shed, and the Eustis Police Department was going to be targeted because of recent run-ins with officers.

Detectives obtained a search warrant and found 22 firearms, several containers of black powder, over a pound of marijuana, powder and crack cocaine, prescription pills, scales, two bullet proof vests and other drug paraphernalia, deputies said.

Deputies did not say if the rocket launcher was found.

401 Most treasured Scouting memory:

Watching my Scoutmaster sweating and fussing and trying not to curse out loud, showing us the "Indian bow" trick to start a fire from twigs and bark, and epically failing.

Then having the grizzled old deer hunter from the next campsite over yell, "Hey buddy!" and toss him a battered Zippo before cracking a fresh beer.

Wildland survival lesson, learned.

413 I'm new to the troop but it seems to me a lot of parents are just dropping their kids off at the meeting point and then letting the Troop figure out how to get their kids to the campout. Seems odd to me to assume another parent is going to cheerfully assume responsibility for transporting one's kid.
Posted by: @JohnTant

We drop off our son as well.
When I was a scout, there were two adults; one scoutmaster, and an assistant. Now, it seems the adult kid ratio is about 2:1 kids/adults. Again, when I was a scout, parents would team up and take turns droppng off scouts at the camps. No, several adults go, and there's a trailer, so the gear goes in that.

As you can see, dropping and running can be seen as being bad, but so might tagging along.

I went on-line checking out dresses, and gave up. So it's off to the mall for me this afternoon. Ugh.

Kurtz claimed yesterday that Stephanopoulos "made a mistake", parroting Stephy's own dissembling, and said he "misjudged" etc etc. Anyone might have sent the Clintons $75K, hidden it and then go on to advocate on their behalf against critics trying to highlight their corruption, says Kurtz. Anyone. Simple mistake (s).

Bullshit: ABC had a clear policy prohibiting this very sort of action and Stephy knowingly violated it. He agreed when employed not to do exactly what he did in this instance.

He got his heart broken last summer by a girl we were convinced was The One. Gorgeous, sweet, seemed crazy about our son. We even took her to ATL to celebrate my m-i-l's bday and she met the whole family.

It's on TV all the time and TV is just a reflection of our culture. It's in the news all the time because it isn't news when there is a party and no one gets raped.

It reinforces the narrative of how men are.

I had heard that they are deliberately deviating from the books now. The pompous jerk author is likely annoyed at the criticism he was receiving. That, and that most sentient beings predicted the end of the turgid series years ago.

What stung most was that the first two seasons were being hailed as being better than the books, because they edited what he wrote (much like how the first three Star Wars movies benefited from not being George lucas solo productions).

Still, George Martin is a prick, and HBO runs this kinda crap for ratings, so there ya go.

477 >>I had heard that they are deliberately deviating from the books now.

Well yes. The last two books were long rambly detours that didn't include half your favorite characters and added a bunch of assholes nobody cares about. So I don't mind that.

I just hate what they are doing with this particular story because it sucks and is gross and I want Ramsey to die like yesterday. I couldn't even watch the theon stuff last year.

Also they have cut all of the stuff I actually liked from this part of the story.

One of the many problems with fiction, especially historical/fantasy fiction, is that it's so poorly written. Almost all of it is written as if seen through a 20th/21st century leftist prism. People speak and act as if they were headed to an ACLU meeting, not the siege of a castle.

We should celebrate something different. And yet, what I started out liking I came to ignore. I dunno; perhaps I'm not as open minded as I wish to be, but I have my limits on unrelenting carnage and grimness.

As other people have commented one of the things that makes GOT so weird is that it is more a 21st century cynic's view of middle-ages life. In reality, there were bad things that happened then as in anywhere else and in any other time, but there were also goodthings and good people in that time period. It sometimes seems like GRRM was trying to write a more believable version of Warhammer Fantasy Battle with GOT. "Turn the old grimdark up to 11"

There are good people in the GOT's world too. And people who do bad things but are ultimately good. And people who start bad and become good. And there is a lot of political intrigue. I don't know, I enjoy the story in general, I just really really hate what the show did in this particular instance. Enough bad things happen, but we didn't need this particular one.

Exactly. When you arewriting characters you want all of them to have both virtues andflaws, both in personality and otherwise. What makesavillain avillain is not that he is flawed, but (a) the choices he makes (as a result of his flaws or otherwise) and(b)that he, for whatever reason either embraces his flaws or rationalizes them away as virtues, or a bit of both.

What makes a hero a hero is not that he has no flaws, but again (a) the choices he makes and (b) how he deals with and in some cases overcomes his flaws or succeeds in doing the right thing in spite of flaws he cannot overcome.

Then both the sisters were overjoyed to hear this; for they had beautiful feet, and had no doubt that they could wear the golden slipper. The eldest went first into the room where the slipper was, and wanted to try it on, and the mother stood by. But her big toe could not go into it, and the shoe was altogether much too small for her. Then the mother said, "Never mind, cut it off. When you are queen you will not care about toes; you will not want to go on foot." So the silly girl cut her big toe off, and squeezed the shoe on, and went to the king's son.

698 What's the big news from Cannes? Another artsy, progressive film about you-know-what:

"In an early stand-out, Todd
Haynes's 'Carol' features Blanchett as a wealthy 1950s housewife who
falls hard for a budding photographer (Rooney Mara). The
lushly shot period piece sees Carol, who is divorcing her businessman
husband, threatened with the loss of custody of her young daughter on 'moral grounds'.The film
makes a strong case for equal rights at a time when, as Blanchett noted
after the screening, dozens of countries still have anti-homosexuality
laws on the books."

Of course they were. Eli Lake was reporting on this days after the attack.

Fox also has documents that show that the DIA knew almost immediately that it was a terrorist attack that was planned as much as 10 days in advance in retaliation for a drone killing of a senior terrorist. It also warns of the rise of the JV team that just took down Ramadi.

Obama lies and the msm covers for him. If they reported on him the way they did Bush he would have lost his re-election in a landslide.

770
What exactly does the putative existence of a gun-running operation (partly) out of Benghazi to Syria do to change anything about the Benghazi disaster and scandal? Have never understood everyone's interest in this.

Benghazi was an incredible disaster because 1) a chief of mission and other personnel were murdered after being put in an absurdly unsecure position in an area of long-standing high threat levels 2) the political seniors (and "career" people like Morrell) engaged in bizarre, ludicrous, obviously mendacious public behavior to misrepresent the nature of the attack 3) the same people (with the cooperation of the LA County Sheriffs dept.) created the still unbelievable and disastrous spectacle of the US "punishing" the creator of some obscure controversial video in response to the murderous (and carefully directed) mobs in Cairo (basically discarding American moral leadership on matters of freedom that was tirelessly and rightly maintained through the long Cold War) 4) it demonstrated what an utter collapse there has been in the US press, that such absurd obviously false claims regarding a deadly serious matter could go without being shredded instantly and its purveyors hounded relentlessly 5) it demonstrated what a dumbed-down, effectively stupid and irresponsible electorate we now suffer under - that this debacle would have zero impact on an ongoing election campaign.

An arms transfer operation, which would be operating under a congressional "finding" for covert ops from the intel committees and with knowledge of congressional leadership, doesn't change any of this one way or the other (except perhaps to emphasize even more the deadly incompetence of the security arrangements and the presence of a chief of mission in Benghazi without an army of escorts).

Whatever. In a country where the top contending "opposition" presidential aspirants can't even intelligently addressa stupid gotcha question about Iraq, we are clearly far past the point of no return.

I totally agree.

Oicking someone named Csstro serves two functions:

-- As a dogwhistle to hard-left white progressives that the economic system they benefit from down in Cuba down (hint: it's called "communism") will be coming to America, and that Hillary is part of the "cool kids" for pulling this clever ruse over on the rednecks;
-- As a blunt racial appeal to all Hispanic voters: "This guy is Hispanic; you WILL vote for him."

Anyone else not progressive or Hispanic is an unperson so who cares what they think?

Madonna supposedly embraces Kabbalah but her mentor is some guy who appears to be be into it primarily for the Ka-ching!!./ Now Lindsay Lohan has become a Muslim. Neither of them could find any sense of discipline or mysticism in Roman Catholicism or the Eastern Orthodox Church? I know Madonna was raised as a RC, but my guess is that neither she nor Lohan has read anything of depth on the lives of Saints or mystics.

The point is that the Pope did not call Abbas "an angel of peace". That is the news media doing their normal misquoting bullshit. What the Pope said was that he would pray that Abbas would become an angel of peace. That is an entirely different thing. That is the sort of thing that the Pope is supposed to do, to pray that evil people will have a change of heart. Christianity is all about redemption like Paul on the road to Damascus.

She's not becoming a Muslim. She was spotted reading a Koran, and her publicist basically explained, "Lindsay is dabbling in reading about trendy spiritualities and though this one would score her some coolness points. Now that she sees it's backfiring, she'll likely drop it like a hot potato."

What happened was Lohan, like a the idiot that she is, got a tattoo last year in Arabic letters, and she posted a picture of it on Tumblr or something, and said the tattoo guy told her it meant "Peace and Harmony" in Arabic or something. People who actually knew Arabic pointed out to her that it really meant something like "I am a skanky gutter-whore," and that she had been tricked.

In repentance Lohan promised to learn some Arabic, and the Koran incident is the result.

815 An arms transfer operation, which would be operating under a congressional "finding" for covert ops from the intel committees and with knowledge of congressional leadership, doesn't change any of this one way or the other (except perhaps to emphasize even more the deadly incompetence of the security arrangements and the presence of a chief of mission in Benghazi without an army of escorts).

Your assuming that Obama followed the law and included Congress on whatever he was doing in Beghazi with arms transfers. Given Obama's history of lawlessness including his blatant ignoring of a federal courts order to stop giving amnesty to illegals that seem a bit generous to me.

It also flies directly in the face of Obama's insistence over the years that he wasn't supplying arms to militants in Syria.
