Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Morning Thread (5-8-2015)Friday! Happy Mother's Day weekend to all the mothers. [Added: rdbrewer] Commenter "Zombie" had a decent rundown of the the UK elections early in the morning.Wow, been looking at the UK election results. It really is a complete bloodbath for the Liberal Democrats (the ultra-far-left party) and Labour (the medium-far-left party). The Lib Dems went from being the #3 kingmaker party even seeking ways to displace Labour to be the leading left-wing party...to (after tonight's results) becoming a completely irrelevant fringe party. Their incumbents lost 41 races out of 47, leaving them with only 6 members of parliament. Probably the worst night any political party has had in any democratic nation in the last 40 years. Labour, simultaneously, has lost 28 incumbent seats, and went from being the dominant party in Scotland to having just a single member of parliament there out of 57 possible races. Complete apocalyptic collapse. Meanwhile, the parties that picked up all those votes were the Scottish National Party, which now has 55 out of 57 seats in Scotland -- and UKIP, which has now easily displaced the Lib Dems to become the #3 vote-getting party in the country. That's all the good news. The bad news is that UKIP's votes are spread out evenly in districts throughout the land, so they are only going to win a tiny handful of seats, despite getting about 13% of the nationwide vote. They simply haven't yet risen to a majority in any district except for a few. The other bad news is that although the "Conservatives" will retain power, and the two major leftist parties got thrashed, overall when you add up all the leftist parties combined (including the Scottish National Party, which has a socialist bent, and the Greens), they still won 49.6% of the vote. It's just that they split it up among various parties, and couldn't get unified. So it's not like Britain has swung rightward -- it's just that the left parties are so incompetent and have such terrible candidates that they couldn't get their act together to win an election that could have been theirs. But hey, I'll take "good news, bad news" over "it's all bad news" any day. Thanks, Zombie. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
Good morning! Let's smile and be happy and strike fear in the hearts of killjoy leftists everywhere.

The Senate has approved a bipartisan bill that gives the Senate the final call made on any "deal" made by Obama with Iran. The House will vote next week. This only makes the Constitution back in force for approving treaties, no matter what the lawless turd in the WH calls them. Note also since this was passed 98-1 if a like number is done in the House it will be veto proof.

In the beginning... the Corps was made with the express purpose of protecting ships and sailors. The Corps has since been developed and used an 'expeditionary' force to seize and defend advanced naval bases. WW II rolled around, the Corps was used to fight the War in the Pacific since that was what it was designed and equipped to do. To answer your question more directly; the D-Day invasion was an Army gig although there was some participation by the Corps: http://marinesmagazine.dodlive.mil/2009/12/14/wwii-marines-in-europe/ And I should add that the Army participated in the Pacific too, simply because the Corps was (and is to this day) a small, specialized force. The First Air Fleet had plans in case the Pacific Fleet had sortied. Their spy network had located the sea area south of DiamondHead where the battleships would have gone. There would have been far far more deaths.
But in the dozen or so investigations carried out over the attack, not a single shred of credible evidence has emerged to support the notion FDR allowed the attack to happen. Or could he have done anything with a US public firmly wanting not to be involved in a war in Europe. The extension of the draft only passed the House by one vote. And people like Charles Lindbergh were suggesting the US ally with Germany if they could not stay neutral. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 08, 2015 06:36 AM (k+itx) 90

Canon 1398 of the Code of Canon Law imposes automatic excommunication on Latin Rite Catholics who procure a completed abortion, if they fulfil the conditions for being subject to such a sanction. Eastern Catholics are not subject to automatic excommunication, but they are to be excommunicated by decree if found guilty of the same action, and they may be absolved of the sin only by the eparchial bishop. In addition to saying that abortion is immoral, the Catholic Church also makes statements and takes actions in opposition to its legality.
Doesn't say what level of sin it is, but if it calls for excommunication that has to be a high level. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 08, 2015 06:38 AM (wlDny) 94

Here's the weekly Ziegfeld Girl, Naomi Johnson: http://goo.gl/KzD5GC She was probably the favorite model of photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston, who wrote: Miss Johson is my 'Greuze' model because she combines many of the lovely features to be found in the masterpieces of French painting. A delicate, lovely head set upon a young form that combines femininity and athletic strength. Wavy chestnut brown hair, level brows and soft grey eyes. Breadth between the eyes, a straight nose with senstive nostrils and well-defined lips that curve at the corners suggest a sense of humor and intelligence. Her skin is cream in coloring and she is of medium height. The nude studies she did with Johnston are perhaps his most famous pix. It wasn't the planes. It was just that American tactics and torpedoes were designed to sink deeper than the harbor before leveling out and running true. So they "assumed" so did the Jap torpedoes. Monetary parsimony saw no testing in real world conditions ... so the Bliss-Levitt torpedo could not be dropped at any altitude higher than 100ft or an airspeed in excess of 100mph.
And even if dropped exactly right; the torpedoes could run erratic, sink, run deep and miss, or even fail to detonate when contact was made. The Americans tried the wood crate thing on these torpedoes tail surfaces in an attempt to fix some issues, but still did not address the bad detonators nor really fix the erratic running problem. By the time the improved lightweight aerial torpedo arrived, the TBF/TBM had almost no targets to sink with it. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 08, 2015 06:57 AM (k+itx) 125

And since it was passed 98-1 it would override any veto. Of course if he does like he normally does he can just ignore it since impeachment is "off the table". Normally a "treaty" requires 2/3 to pass. Now they want 2/3 to override Obama veto of their "disapproval". 2/3 is normal for overriding a veto but normally 2/3 to approve a treaty. To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world."
Karl Barth-Theologian Surely most of us have heard a sermon or two or attended a study on the importance of prayer. The above quote from Karl Barth shows us an angle of prayer that many of us don't necessarily consider all that often. Prayer is an act of rebellion against the chaos and disorder of this world. It is a time of centering the soul within oneself, in which priorities are realigned and the still small voice of God finds a path through the strident clamor of human life to meet the one who is crying out. In a sinfully disordered world, a healthy prayer life can often be the only accurate compass pointing us to God. And every time we kneel in humility and approach the living Lord, we are saying, "no more" to the chaos, "no more" to the worry, "no more" to the pain, and "no more" to the sin which separates person from God and person from person. Being a resident of Northern Michigan I must comment on the deer population news stories.
First : Northern Michigan is a different environment for white tail deer than it is in the southern part of the state. In the south it is mostly farms and small woodlots and urban areas where the deer graze the soybean and corn fields like cattle. In some cases doing damage to a farm's profitability. In the north it is nearly all forest; not an ideal environment for deer who are creatures of the 'edge' of the forest. Also in the north it is not uncommon for winter temperatures to drop below zero and remain there, night and day, for weeks if not months. In the south these extreme cold temperatures might last a few nights. In the north we have wolf packs, and mountain lions, and coyotes. None of these predators are present in the south. In the northern peninsula snow cover ranges from one or two feet to three or four feet depending on the exact area. In the south the snow cover for many winters is zero to a few inches that melt away on a sunny afternoon. When the 'experts' say the deer population of the north has been cut in half by winter, (and wolf packs) it is believable. Posted by: Landon Maedoc at May 08, 2015 07:39 AM (Hgz78) 176

Posted by: HR drinking coffee at May 08, 2015 07:36 AM (rHXGG) _______________________ Yes, I have no problem with the pope forgiving women (or doctors, nurses, etc.) who have had (or given) abortions. After all, Jesus told us to forgive. But when Jesus forgave the prostitute for her sins, He also instructed her to "sin no more." Jesus didn't celebrate the prostitute's sins, or try to pretend that her actions were not really sins at all, but merely her rightful "choice." So yes, by all means, let us follow Jesus' example and forgive people who have chosen to sin, especially when those people are genuinely repentant for their sins. But let us also not forget that we need to encourage people to stop choosing sin as they go on with their lives. If the pope doesn't do that, then his efforts here seem pretty senseless. I am not an expert on European or even English politics, but the left/right reversal thing is probably for the continent. In England, Tories = RINOs and Labour = Clinton/Obama hybrid. UKIP is roughly equivalent to Tea Party--began as single issue movement to decrease central authority (EU vs wasteful spending) and represents greater liberty to its followers, and a dangerous reactionary/racist movement to our media betters. Like the Tea Party movement here, they have 10-20% support there which is quite vocal but unfortunately also quite in the minority. It should not be hard for me to get corrected if this is wrong, but I was taught that MacArthur's command was SW Pacific, meaning the big islands north of Australia, and that the island-hopping business with Marines was all under Nimitz and Co.
The "defense" of the B-17 in opposition to the Lancaster usually is that it was not designed for the Freighter-with-an-Attitude role, but was meant as a long-distance naval patrol bomber. I accept this, which makes it hard to account for the presence of B-17's in Hawaii and the Philippines with...no naval patrols. And there was the estimable Catalina, which was not an attack plane until later, but had a hell of a range for the time and, most of them, operable radios. Makes you say arrgh. Lucky they just mean mountain lions, and not the puma or the lynx. Somewhere recently was an expert opinion that a lone male of those species might roam 1700 miles from home. The Chicago police shot one in the Loop, which had to really hurt, but it proved they can hit something if they really try.
So, I'm teaching a hunter ed class one time, and a "state wildlife officer" comes to answer any questions, and he gets the one on every new 12-year-old hunter's mind: If I'm hunting and a bear attacks, is it OK if I shoot him? And instead of discussing What Slug For Bear, or where to aim, or whether to climb a tree, said officer flatly states "There are no bears in Ohio." Kid re-frames, same answer. No Bears. Don't Even Think About It. One week later, a mid-sized black bear walked down the middle of a road in Fulton County. So to say "No mountain lions in U.P." is a little forward, and perhaps trusts too much in the bridge-fare structure. Now, whether those roaming males ever meet Ms. Puma and found a Puma Community is one for the cat-sociologists, but I'd bet there are one, two, dozen, what have you, east of Iron Mountain. Oh, FFS, whatever. Back when wolves were re-introduced to the U.P. in the mid-70s, local radio news reports were rife with reports that "one was in my back yard just this morning" when the number of released animals was small and, more importantly, they had been released many miles away from were the reports occurred. Any impact of cougars in Northern Michigan on reducing the number of deer in the wild likely ranks well below the severity of the winters, wolves, coyotes and motor vehicles. As for the DNR, if cougars were present in a sustainable numbers and breeding, you can bet your bottom dollar that they'd be pressing for more funding to "manage then". I just did a quick check of Wisconsin, and there are numerous confirmed sightings of big cats all over that state. The environment in Wisconsin is slightly better for deer because the heavy forest has been cleared and farming is a major activity. Wisconsin does get very cold temperatures that last weeks in the worst winters, but usually get less snow. If there are cougars in Wisconsin, it is highly likely there will be big cats in the upper peninsula. The one sighting in Michigan isn't all that far from my residence. The exact location is kept vague so I'm not exactly sure where it is, and once you get off the highway, it turns to wilderness pretty quickly. Who the owner of that land is, is also difficult to discover. Even the state owned lands are surrounded by private land making access to the state forests awkward, probably by design. I have a stuffed 40-some-pound Ohio bobcat. It's not a mountain lion. Virtually indistinguishable from the biggest baddest and best-fed stray tom you ever saw. I would not want one sauntering in to my campsite, and it definitely could take a fawn, but, no monster. Unlike "Ohio Bobcats," they're often rather shy.
Ohio will have rifle season for deer this year. This is huge, as a lot of slug-barrel makers now have no next-generation market. I'm a little concerned (please note), as slug-gun hunters are used to 30 to 100 yard shots, and could count on the slug dropping within 200. A rifle carries much better, and there will be a lot of folks watching for what's in errant-rifle range. Could turn into a thing. My part of Ohio hasn't been overrun with deer since they dug the ditches, but eastern and southwestern Ohio are "polluted with deer." If half of them died one winter, the corn farmers would have a convention. Unmolested, the herd grows by a third each year. Maybe a few hard winters would check the spread of CWD. That's the biggest threat to hunting, and healthy deer, in Michigan. Posted by: Stringer Davis at May 08, 2015 08:31 AM (xq1UY) 286

Yep. First thing you do is ask: Which church is the best environment for my child? And then you choose one in which you feel welcomed. You don't go to the one w/conservative clergy whom you know do not accept your lifestyle. There are a lot of churches to choose from - why did they pick that one, one wonders...(Same as why do they choose an obviously Christian bakery for their wedding cake?) 2. The sacrament of baptism does not impart salvation.
I get that you believe that, but there's a lot of theologians who say you are wrong. What does Baptism give or profit? It works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. Someone is building a mountain from a mole hill.
Baptism can occur at a later time. Just this church is going 'pass.' This does not preclude the child, perhaps as a young adult, from seeking such at a later time. Or if this child's caregivers really cared for the child, they would find a church more accepting of their live style. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 08, 2015 08:50 AM (k+itx) 366

Holy f'n shite are you people serious??? OMFG HIGH POWER RIFLES OMFG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIEEEEE!!!!
(Every modern rifle is "high powered" when compared to handguns of similar caliber. Even the lowly .22, the bullet travels farther and has more muzzle velocity even though the cartridge is the same. Unknot your panties and get over it.) News flash. Every responsible hunter knows that they own every bullet that leaves the muzzle, and if you are hunting with a rifle you are either in a stand, aiming in a generally downward direction, or you are paying close attention to your backstop (rule number 4). There are a LOT of other states who allow those crazy hunters to search for the North American Hoofed Rat using "high powered"...and in some cases, scoped even (OH THE HORRORS!!!) rifles, and there is a significant deficit of OMFG BLOOD IN THE STREETS! In fact, my own state is one of them and we're at least as heavily populated as Ohio. Yep, there are knuckleheads out there, but that is true of everything. Try to ease up on the hysteria, OK? Every responsible hunter knows that they own every bullet that leaves the muzzle, and if you are hunting with a rifle you are either in a stand, aiming in a generally downward direction, or you are paying close attention to your backstop
Key word responsible. Some hunters set up in field next to me. Prolly 100 yards away. Canada Geese go by they shoot. Wife's car ended up with six little dents and a small crack in the windshield that kept getting bigger and bigger until it had to be replaced. Cost? $300.00 Posted by: SE Pa Moron at May 08, 2015 09:01 AM (xQX/f) 406
Stupid to not allow hunting small game with a .22. It is highly accurate and effective on game up to jackrabbit size. And will do a fair job on people in a pinch. Also, the oldest mass produced metallic cartridge in the world. Invented by Smith and Wesson IIRC.

US 33 in southern Ohio is rife with deer carcasses, I'd wager I've seen about 10 in the past week. Most are surprisingly intact for encounters that generally happen at 70+ MPH with over 3,000 pounds of moving plastic and metal.

I'm kind of "meh" on the British elections. The so-called Conservatives in British politics would have to turn right and squint to see Olympia Snowe. They're further left than even the American Rockefeller Establishment Republicans.

I didn't notice anyone being particularly "hysterical" about the hp rifles. "Responsible hunters" are rarely the problem. It's the newbie urbanite / suburbanite "hunters" that cause the issues. Posted by: Gregory of Yardale at May 08, 2015 09:03 AM (O7MnT) Trendy little botique in Lebanon called 223 (or was it 556?) right by the Golden Lamb. Looks like it caters mostly to women who are doing the CCW thing, but I saw a couple EBRs in there when I went through in late 2013. I know there are a sh*t ton of ranges around Hamilton County, and there's a very gun-friendly place called "Kentucky" not far from there. it's just that the left parties are so incompetent and have such terrible candidates that they couldn't get their act togethe
All that may be true, but the ultimate problem the Left faces is that it is a coalition of special interests - with (still) only a tiny core of true socialists/commies. Many of the other special interests are often comprised of basically conservative people who vote Left because their particular special interest has a stake in advancing through Big Government. Here in the US, we're still in the stage of things where the special interests are willing to coalesce for "the common good". I think the UK may be going beyond that stage: realizing (finally) there just isn't enough to go around, and fearing that their own special cause is too far down the priority list. And speaking of going hiking in the woods, the presence of wolf packs (rare), lions (very rare), bear (common), and coyote (very common), one would like to carry a sidearm, just in case.
Unfortunately, carrying a firearm in the woods violates game law as the Wildlife managers presume you are illegally hunting game animals out of season if you are carrying. The real reason one needs to be packing are the occasional encounters with the illegal growers of marijuana, and, should you encounter law enforcement, they will assume that you are the illegal grower of marijuana because you are armed. It'sa no win problem, complicated by land ownership and tresspass laws, so it's best to stick to designated public areas and avoid the deep woods. Besides, the mosquitos and gnats and black flies are terrible up here in the summer. Posted by: Landon Maedoc at May 08, 2015 09:09 AM (Hgz78) 432

Glad I am not the only one to go 'those planes were dumped.' The Avenger with wings folded hints at it. But the two SBDs that are missing their outer wings really give it away. Those two were probably squadron spares stored in the hanger overhead and it was SOP to remove the wings of planes stored that way.

From AOSHQ (not 100% sure it was actually Ace's rant -- may have been one of the COBs, but I can't remember) a few days ago, the problem is that Obama already has, from prior sanctions bills, the authority to do what he wants to do with Iran anyway. So the talk about the Iran agreement, if there is one, being a treaty subject to 2/3 approval is just nonsense (sorry, Levin).
The Corker-Menendez bill, in the end, gives Congress a way to register disapproval. It's merely symbolic if one assumes that the disapproval law will be vetoed and enough D's will hang with the SCOAMT to sustain against an override. But it at least would put some D's on record as being supporters of Iran when Iran tests the nuke. That's not much, but it's better than nothing, which as a practical matter is what we would have otherwise. There's nothing to say that we can't reinstate sanctions when President Walker is in office n January 2017. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at May 08, 2015 09:13 AM (5f5bM) 437
