Some 40 or so years ago, I attended a meeting of the L5 Society at MIT.
They were giving a talk about what is "L5" (and L4, etc) and the case for space colonization. Part of the presentation was the concept of putting a large glass cylinder at L5 position in space with plants, animals and people inside. During the presentation, I just kept imagining the glass cylinder breaking. Well. lo and behold, when we got to the Q A, I came to realize that most of the folks who want to colonize L5 were social misfits, who hated living on Earth. I just couldn't imagine this diverse set of social misfits trying to cobble together a society in the big glass cylinder in the vacuum of space. Frankly, I thought that hanging out with Charles Manson would probably be safer. Posted by: Islamic Rage Boy at May 07, 2015 11:02 PM (e8kgV) 8

Infidel,
My older brother goes to Market Basket ( used to,be cheapest grocery store in MA ) until the Board tried to get rid of beloved owner's son & employees went on strike last summer until he could buy cousin out. Employees loved him. It worked Out after months but prices increased. Stop&I Shop is up street from that one & is cheaper than others. Then he will go to Shaw's & again to second Stop & because they have butchers & will give him what he asks for. I discovered Hannaford's In November when I stopped on way from getting haircut. I went in once to return something & did & then wanted cart. I asked another woman to push one to me because I had things to buy. She did & told me it had more to choose from & used to be cheapest after Market Basket. Are there ant cheap Trader Joe rip offs, like Aldi's? You must bring bag &/or pay For cart &.bag? Coffee in cans is cheap there. Posted by: Carol at May 07, 2015 11:34 PM (sj3Ax) Posted by: AltonJackson at May 07, 2015 11:34 PM (KCxzN) 153

Correct ergonomics, a modern muzzle brake, 7.62x51 vs. .30-'06 and it should be as effective as an M-60, at the very least. Posted by: cthulhu at May 08, 2015 01:59 AM (T1005) 418
Wow, been looking at the UK election results.
It really is a complete bloodbath for the Liberal Democrats (the ultra-far-left party) and Labour (the medium-far-left party). The Lib Dems went from being the #3 kingmaker party even seeking ways to displace Labour to be the leading left-wing party...to (after tonight's results) becoming a completely irrelevant fringe party. Their incumbents lost 41 races out of 47, leaving them with only 6 members of parliament. Probably the worst night any political party has had in any democratic nation in the last 40 years. Labour, simultaneously, has lost 28 incumbent seats, and went from being the dominant party in Scotland to having just a single member of parliament there out of 57 possible races. Complete apocalyptic collapse. Meanwhile, the parties that picked up all those votes were the Scottish National Party, which now has 55 out of 57 seats in Scotland -- and UKIP, which has now easily displaced the Lib Dems to become the #3 vote-getting party in the country. That's all the good news. The bad news is that UKIP's votes are spread out evenly in districts throughout the land, so they are only going to win a tiny handful of seats, despite getting about 13% of the nationwide vote. They simply haven't yet risen to a majority in any district except for a few. The other bad news is that although the "Conservatives" will retain power, and the two major leftist parties got thrashed, overall when you add up all the leftist parties combined (including the Scottish National Party, which has a socialist bent, and the Greens), they still won 49.6% of the vote. It's just that they split it up among various parties, and couldn't get unified. So it's not like Britain has swung rightward -- it's just that the left parties are so incompetent and have such terrible candidates that they couldn't get their act together to win an election that could have been theirs. But hey, I'll take "good news, bad news" over "it's all bad news" any day. Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 02:01 AM (jBuUi) 419

UKIP, Tories, and Labour ate the corpse of the Lib Dems. UKIP came in second in many races, an can claim to be the anti-Labour party in Northern England. While they got only one seat, their 3rd largest vote total will keep them in the game... which is something that can't be said to the Lib Dems. Plaid Cymru and the Greens have also fallen flat, winning only three and zero, respectively, seats so far (with 545 of 650 seats in). The big story is the domination of the SNP. The Tories, the Lib Dems, and Labour each got one Scottish seat. Millibrand will be out as head of Labour. One up and coming Labour potential leader is Chuka Umunna (the UK's version of Obama) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuka_Umunna Clegg is out as head of Lib Dems (as if that matters). Farage said he's step aside for UKIP, but people are trying to get him to change his mind. Cameron also said that he would not serve more than two terms as PM, which means that Boris Johnson (who was elected PM and will remain as London Mayor), could be the UK Prime Minister in 2020. A fun hobby is to click on all the different "ridings" (small parliament districts) too see all the countless kook parties that put up a single joke candidate in a single district.
Nationwide, there is of course the "Monster Raving Loony Party," which has been around since the '60s unofficially and the '80s officially, plus the hilariously named "Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol" party. But if you dig down, you'll find plenty more. For example, in Nigel Farage's district of Thanet South, he's running against "Zebadiah Abu-Obadiah" of the "Al-Zebabist Nation of Ooog," and also against "Nigel Askew" of the "We Are The Reality Party" and Ruth Bailey of the hyper-localized "Manston Airport Independent Party." If only US politics was as fun. Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 02:16 AM (jBuUi) 429
The map at the BBC link is even more wild -- http://tinyurl.com/ovforrq Scotland has a tiny dot for Labour in South Edinbugh, and the Tories have a bump of blue against a wild sea of SNP gold. Posted by: Sunni LeBeouf In the US, all congressional districts (and I mean ALL of them) are gerrymandered every 10 years based on the census. But in the UK, many of the political electoral divisions are based on ancient medieval (or even pre-medieval) boundary lines, and are more or less permanent. So UKIP (or the Tories) simply don't have the ability or opportunity to "draw up" the districts to their benefit, gerrymander-style, as the GOP and the Dems do in the US. In the US, all congressional districts (and I mean ALL of them) are gerrymandered every 10 years based on the census.

Compare that to New York City, where even in Manhattan and Brooklyn the congressional districts are completely insanely shaped, jumping over bodies of water, having jagged limbs and antennae every which way completely unrelated to historical neighborhood lines, etc. But yes, I suppose, out in the countryside, there could be a bit of semi-gerrymandering in the UK -- but there is no comparison to the extreme level of gerrymandering in the US, as I documented in this report: http://tinyurl.com/7r944b3 Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 02:42 AM (jBuUi) 457

Another good example of a British parliamentary district following medieval boundary lines is the district known as "Cotswolds" which precisely encompasses...the Cotswolds.
In Wales, the 2015 parliamentary district known as "Montgomeryshire" almost precisely follows the outline of the former "shire" known as Montgomeryshire, whose boundaries were drawn up in (wait for it) 1267 AD. There are practically no congressional districts in the US that follow natural or old-time traditional boundaries like that. Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 03:01 AM (jBuUi) 474

Amazing -- the UK election map is beginning to take final shape, and the entire heart of Britain is basically a solid sea of blue (the color representing the Conservatives), with the occasional dot of red for Labor in urban slum and hipster districts.
It's very similar to the US election map, with the GOP absolutely dominating geographically while the Dems are concentrated primarily in (small) urban areas. Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 03:06 AM (jBuUi) 480

However, I don't know the nature of the unreported districts -- could be that (just as in the US) the leftwing strongholds are purposely slow-counting to give their side a big end-of-night surprise boost in results. Who knows? Posted by: zombie at May 08, 2015 03:14 AM (jBuUi) 483

OK, once again with the PSA thing -- The SF Bay Area Maker Faire is May 16/17 at the San Mateo Event Center. Although saturated with progressive anti-capitalist messaging, the basic concept is "do what you want and make something that others will value" -- which slots right in with Libertarianism and Capitalism. They just haven't washed the crap out of their ears that schools and popular culture pumped-in.
Accordingly, you will simultaneously see a bunch of "worship Gaia, hug a tree" BS literally side-by-side with propane-guzzling monstrosities like http://tinyurl.com/q72y239 If you've never been, it is great fun and well-worth doing. Can't speak for the other ones, but the Bay Area Maker Faire has a lot of holdover stuff from Burning Man and often seems like a PG-version of that. It looks like I'll be there Saturday. About the Brits ... God bless them, every one, but especially those that remember which side of their toast could have hit the floor without our help and blood and money and muscle.
I don't want to seem bitter, but those folks have selective amnesia! I do not want them to kiss our asses. We made choices, we waited for events to force our hand, so fair enough if they hate us a little for not coming to their aid sooner rather than later. I get that. It's a valid grudge. But, here we are, 50-60 years on, and they are teaching, teaching ... insuring that their children will hate us. Jesus wept. So, are they still going to be our BFF friends after this election? Will they still like us just as much on all of the BBC shows after this election? Will they continue to, please-please, show us as the dastardly waterboarding murdering jail-keepers of innocent Mu-slimes after this election? I find it difficult to hate, deeply hate that is, English speaking peoples. But, it's getting easier as I cast my thoughts back to all of the wretched shit they have said about us, and how they have portrayed us in their cinema, because they are former rulers of the world that got caught out in a fools game of believing that they could use sugar instead of a hammer to rule. Posted by: Cozmark at May 08, 2015 05:33 AM (lLl+1) Nine times out of 10, my reaction to the usual push-polls is "fuck off". They want to use polls as weapons, they shouldn't be surprised when people blunt them. Posted by: cthulhu at May 08, 2015 05:37 AM (T1005) 626
If anyone gets the chance, watch the Brit version of House of Cards mini series from the early 90's. Better than the Netflix version by a long shot. The best morgin of error is +/- 3%. Also, polling always incorporates numerous biases. Some biases can be compensated for but a lot of the bias is baked into the cake.
Posted by: Cozmark at May 08, 2015 05:20 AM (lLl+1) ------------------- But it's not close and not within the margin of error. Posted by: Bruce J at May 08, 2015 05:41 AM (iQIUe) 630
Push polls aren't meant to be unbiased, they're meant to give some hack a reason to write a press release/"news" article or get people to vote a certain way.
I actually worked on a few push polls and 9 times out of 10 your answer was the same as everyone else. Market research polling or legit political polling, where the goal is to find out what people think and how they make decisions, tries to reduce biases. I assume the SNP will side with Labour since the scots are a bunch of commies.
I watched some youtube video of a young man who was the head of the student socialist blah blah blah. What caught my attention was that it was filmed in his room which was nothing but red, commie crap, pictures of Lenin, etc. His rant was nothing but anti Israel shit, too. But it's not close and not within the margin of error. Posted by: Bruce J at May 08, 2015 05:41 AM (iQIUe) _____ It is within the m.o.e. +/- X% means A could be +/- X% and B can also be +/- X% The polls had Tories and Labour tied at 33% before the election. Now the Tories are +3% and Labour is -3%. Posted by: Cozmark at May 08, 2015 05:49 AM (lLl+1) 633

Posted by: Sunni LeBeouf at May 08, 2015 05:55 AM (XrHO0) The problem is that just about everyone not in Scotland hates their guts. So Labour can reject them and be marginalized or embrace them and be tainted. Everybody have enough popcorn? Scots hate the English because the Scots lost to the English too often.
The winters in Scotland are long, cold and wet and unemployment there is disgracefully high. Cultivating a hatred for the English, obsessing about soccer and drinking heavily are all easy to do inside after the local coal mine has been shut down. Posted by: Cozmark at May 08, 2015 06:02 AM (lLl+1) 643
The articles I've read over the past few days all strongly implied that the SNP and Labour have some bad blood between them, but ultimately it doesn't matter so much if they ally since the Tories will have a majority.

I know a Scot and he laid it all out for me. The Scots don't want to be English.
So whatever the English are, the knee jerk reaction by Scots is to be the opposite. Posted by: Cozmark at May 08, 2015 06:06 AM (lLl+1) 645

That 323 doesn't include the Speaker of the House of Commons, who is a Tory but by tradition runs as a non-partisan.
