Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (4-9-2014)And just remember that this is the stuff that wasn't worthy of my ONT at The Federalist. They have standards there. Also paychecks. Quote of the Day I - Yeah But The Culture War Is Interested in You Edition By now, we know the basic ingredients of a typical skirmish in Culture War 4.0. It goes something like this: a) a leftist claque starts loudly pushing the "correct" Culture War position onto b) a field previously considered fun, innocuous, apolitical, purely personal, or recreational, and c) accusing anyone who opposes them of being a racist, sexist, bigot who relies on oppressive "privilege" to push everyone else down, while these claims are d) backed up by a biased press that swallows the line of attack uncritically and repeats it. The revelations in these two pieces prompted the Washington Examiner's Ashe Schow to ask, "Has the Rolling Stone gang-rape author EVER corroborated a story?" Never forget that Sabrina Erdely was disciplined by Stephen Glass (!!) for submitting a fabricated story. Obviously this was a rare demerit on an otherwise illustrious career. Quote of the Day III - National Day of Anti-Bullying Pink Edition If you're thinking, "Hang on. Day of Pink? Didn't we just have that?" No, that was Pink Shirt Day, the last Wednesday in February. This is Day of Pink, second Wednesday in April. Like the King streetcar, there'll be another one along in a minute, enthusiastically sponsored by Scotiabank, Royal Bank, ViaRail and all the other corporate bigwigs. There is the love and marriage and family kind of happiness, which is exceedingly boring to describe but nonetheless is important to have and dreadful not to have.
GLoP: "We Are Prepared To Believe You and Offer Counseling" This week's GLoP podcast on Ricochet with Jonah Goldberg, Rob Long, and John Podhoretz was particularly good so I'm just going to steal this long excerpt compiled by Ed Driscoll. I am however omitting the part where they talked about their experiences at orgies. And no I'm not just making that up. JOHN PODHORETZ: You talk about people's ordinary skepticism, or common skepticism. I would submit to you that once something becomes a hot ideologically-charged topic, that skepticism is not only suspended in most cases, but it is understood by everyone around - on all sides of the debate - that it is dangerous to your reputation, to your sanity, and to the good working order of your day, to even whisper a breath of skepticism. They had one job. And they were incompetent at that. But that's not even enough, now that we have tens of thousands of useless people whose job is to conduct Reconstruction, as if that had not been done, already, historically speaking; and who work most often at cross-purposes to institutional goals of unity and solidarity in the ranks. No, in recent years the DOD budget has become a Christmas Tree of handouts to professional Diversity Firms, the noxious product of all those university racialist Grievance Studies departments. So it's bad enough that your unit must bear the dead weight of an EO NCO who is, most often, a complete waste of skin. But now he doesn't even have to do his single actual duty, his annual Don't Be A Racist In My Army brief, because it's been outsourced to some gang of racial grievance entrepreneurs who are connected to Administration figures. So now, some fat chick from White Guilt Industries® comes in and reads the slides, and gets $20k for the day she goes around from unit to unit telling all the races they should be at loggerheads. U.S. Gov't to Americans Trapped in Yemen: Maybe Call India All of Snape's Scenes in the Harry Potter Films Put in Chronological Order And they paint a much more heroic picture of Snape showing how was able to eventually overcome his own bitterness and tragic past, remain loyal to Dumbledore at great cost, protect and even come to love Harry despite his own flaws and emotional conflicts. I've Seen the Movies and Trust Me This Will End in Tears and Fire The New Democratic Plan: The Good News is That You Will No Longer Work For The Man The bad news is that you will be working and paying higher taxes for The Retired Man. Social Security is becoming a worse deal for each generation. Those now joining the workforce are expected to pay more into the system than they get out of it. Warren's plan is to shower more money on the current generation of retirees, but without increasing the deficit over the next 10 years. That means, in all likelihood, raising taxes on current workers while also increasing the program's long-run fiscal deficit. How States Are Conducting Opportunistic Gun Confiscations Many police departments have a policy of never returning any guns taken into custody even if they are required to return them later by the law. Some destroy them as a matter of course and then make the owners go to court to get reimbursement for their guns. Saudi Fatwa: Eating Your Wife Is Halal And they mean in the Donner Party way - not the slangy, more enjoyable way. Hey everybody. Job news...
Well, I think somebody actually wants to hire me this time. I think yesterday I mentioned that my first job wanted me to go to a nearby employment agency for testing and registration. Anyway, because I had my second interview, I couldn't make it to the agency yesterday, but planned to go today. Well, this morning at about 9, my interviewer actually *called* to make sure I went to the agency. I phoned her back and told her I was going that morning, which she seemed to like to hear. So I filed out the online application, called, and they said it would take over two hours for their office to get my online application, which IMHO makes *no sense whatsoever.* But they said if I came in that afternoon, they should have my info. So I made an appointment for 1:30pm. (This call to the agency was at about 10:15am.) I go there, have lunch at Taco Bell (darn it but the Chipotle Chixstar is good), made certain I didn't spill anything on my shirt, and finally walked in the place at 1:25. Keep in mind, I'm desperate enough for a job that this place, and the actual site where the job is, are about 30 miles away from me. So what happens? Their entire registration system is down, and they said I should come back Monday. They couldn't have called me of course, I had to *actually drive there* for them to tell me this. So I called the lady who interviewed me, because she seemed like she wanted to make a decision on this data entry job, and told her that I couldn't get a follow-up interview on Monday because of the computer glitches. So at about 5pm, I got a voicemail. The lady called the agency and spoke to the manager, and now she wants me to call the agency *again* tomorrow morning and get the registration and testing hammered out and done. Okay, fine. At least she seems to want to hire me. Kinda frustrating to have to make *three* sorta long trips to get considered, though. Will definitely call the agency before leaving, to make sure they're ready for me. In the meantime, I sent out about four or five more applications, *and* heard from a *big* healthcare company about an interview next week. *That* job pays better and, even though downtown, would probably be a shorter commute. So who knows what will happen, but at least I'm still getting leads. And that was the day that was... Posted by: qdpsteve at April 09, 2015 11:46 PM (elbY7) 71

"first job" = first job I interviewed for yesterday, which is a data entry job. Lower paying than I would like, but full time *and* they said I could come in as late as 10am, which would help me with adjusting to a full-time work sched (wouldn't have to get on the freeway probably most mornings 'til 9).

A bittersweet day. On this date in 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Grant.

You guys may recall an "Aliens" review up on the sidebar a week or some ago? That was made by a guy on YouTube (and Twitter) whose screen-name is "Sargon of Akkad".

I do typing, transcription, and admin/clerical support. I also know Microsoft Office backwards and forwards. BUT... in today's market, that stuff seems to be a dime a dozen, or has been becoming that for years. And let's be honest: in 20 years typing will be gone, mostly replace by voice commands. Who was it upthread wondering if we'd re-fight the late unpleasantness (again). Oh well.
Interesting anecdote about the Mexican war experience and Grant's appearance at Appomattox. Obviously due to the familiarity/friendship/former service together of so many officers on both sides and the common language and (to a degree) culture, the Civil War has the most amazing inter-personal stories of any I've studied. I think the Vicksburg surrender was delayed a few days by a snit between Grant and his Confederate opposite number, related to the fact that Grant owed him money (!) from their time together in California, and the Confederate officer therefore thought he was owed a few favors on surrender terms. You just don't get that sort of stuff in most modern wars. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2015 12:47 AM (afQnV) 282

For the reloaders among us, curiously, I see two handgun powders in stock at Powder Valley (HS-6 and WSF). They don't show up on the gunbot.net search engine.
Decided I've got enough powder to last me through this panic/shortage (now going on 2 full years, if you consider normal online availability the benchmark), so won't buy any. But it's the first time I've seen pistol powder in stock there since just after the CT thing. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2015 12:52 AM (afQnV) 307

Interesting story from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. This guy just killed himself in front of the M Resort.
Turns out he won some sort of contest and got named M Resort's "Biggest Winner" of all time or something, and was rewarded with... free buffet dining forever, and was even allowed to bring a guest with him for every visit. But...then he got complained about by female employees at M, claiming he was stalking them. So he got his buffet privileges revoked and, eventually, banned forever from the property. The story includes some video of the guy that he left behind, included in which he talked about being horribly bullied. I can relate, completely. But... killing yourself because *one* casino in Vegas banned you?? There was obviously some weird stuff going on with this guy. One of the things that traveling in The South has given me to thing about is this -- all 13 colonies had slavery when they were colonized. Slowly, over a period of years, the north eliminated it.....but when they did, they didn't free the slaves and eat the financial loss -- they hauled them over the state line and sold 'em (thus the expression, "sold down the river").
It doesn't excuse slavery, it doesn't change what happened, it doesn't fix any problems or soothe any anger......but it throws a whole lot of what I thought I knew into a different light. Richard, best wishes on the cardio repair project - and wow, a muzzle brake on a Mosin? A 91/30? I don't do any add-ons or mods to my Mosins, but wondering if a brake will make your rifle any louder (bump from very loud to extremely loud, I guess).
Will check out mosinplus just for fun, anyway. Which reminds me, I've got to take 1/10" off the coffee stir stick that's glued to my 1934 Tula front sight post. It was shooting a bit low last time, meaning I haven't yet trimmed down that stir stick enough. For all you Mosin owners who thing your front sight post is ground down too short, consider this solution (free, making it the most prestigious of redneck/garage gunsmithng moves). I think it's fair to say the average northern soldier was fighting to end slavery (and I'm going to cite the Battle Hymn of the Republic in its original wording here) and have doubts as to whether the folks in DC were as interested in freeing *insert appropriate euphemism for blacks of that time here* as they were in preserving their territorial claims (which even on its face isn't completely nefarious-it was considered for quite a while to be a bad idea to let this content develop into several roughly equal powers for fear that we'd go the european route and fight each other every generation or so).
On the southern side, I don't know how you claim slavery wasn't part of it. What they wanted to prevent was having their slaves taken from them. Now, skipping for a moment the incompatibility of slavery with the American notion of freedom, they did kind of have a point that at the time, you're talking about financially ruining much of the south as slaves weren't *free* to their owners-even their deplorable living conditions had cost associated to it. It wasn't unreasonable for southerners to fight to protect their investments (as they saw them). I've heard in recent years there had been an idea to buy out the South, but I'm not sure I believe that. At least not that it was taken very seriously. I don't know if DC could have raised enough to do it (considering there was no income tax at that point), but it'd be interesting in a head-of-a-pin sort of way to see those numbers crunched out. It would have been worth it to keep all those men on both sides alive, I think, but I doubt the case could have been really made before the war. Back when we were in a row house in MD, we had a shelter turn us down, because the HOA didn't allow fences, so we were gonna put in an electric fence. That was inhumane apparently. I absolutely lost my mind on that fat harridan. I've never been so close to striking a woman in my life. Awful experience. Really? The average Union Soldier was drafted? I guess in a way you could say that. A paid substitute could be considered a draft.
Under the Union draft act men faced the possibility of conscription in July 1863 and in Mar., July, and Dec. 1864. Draft riots ensued, notably in New York in 1863. Of the 249,259 18-to-35-year-old men whose names were drawn, only about 6% served, the rest paying commutation or hiring a substitute. Horseshit.... the average Union soldier... was DRAFTED!
Please look up the history of the draft riots they had in New York... Well that's a fair point. I don't know the ratio of honorary citizens to actual citizens in the northern army, so maybe I shouldn't have used the term average. But certainly it was many, even if it was rationalization for the shitty circumstance they found themselves in. And I don't know what you think southerners were fighting for. You can say independence, but there wasn't any reason to want independence beyond protecting what they would have seen as their property rights, even if it wasn't they themselves that owned slaves. That, by the way isn't me trying to pick a fight, as it's late. If you have a suggestion what motivated the South to split off and fight (or individuals to fight assuming they weren't similarly conscripted) that was totally unrelated to slavery, I'm interested in hearing it. Its actually pretty simple... and this is from letters written at the time... Remember that before the Civil War... you were considered to be a citizen of your STATE... and that State, was part of the Union. It was THESE United States... not THE United States... So when Virginia was invaded by the North... they rallied to defend their STATE... because that was who they felt loyalty to... not a Federal Government... Note... every Confederate Unit, was from a State... raised by that State... there were no 'Federal' units like the North had.... and expanded as the War went on. They were, very simply... defending their State... My last name is not very common... and yet when you search the rolls of the Various Civil War Regiments... you will find that almost ALL of the Family served... mainly in the Cavalry. Saying the South fought for Slavery, is like saying everyone on the Allied side in WW1, fought for the Archduke who got killed.... Posted by: BB Wolf at April 10, 2015 02:01 AM (qh617) 383

Maybe not individuals. Individuals probably did fight for their State. How many of those actually read and under stood their State's Article, Act, or Resolution of Succession?
For example here is South Carolina's South Carolina: We affirm that these ends for which this Government was instituted have been defeated, and the Government itself has been made destructive of them by the action of the non-slaveholding States. Those States have assume the right of deciding upon the propriety of our domestic institutions; and have denied the rights of property established in fifteen of the States and recognized by the Constitution; they have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery; they have permitted open establishment among them of societies, whose avowed object is to disturb the peace and to eloign the property of the citizens of other States. They have encouraged and assisted thousands of our slaves to leave their homes; and those who remain, have been incited by emissaries, books and pictures to servile insurrection." The loyalties were complicated, and people fought on the sides they did for a wide number of reasons. One of my ancestors tried to be neutral and just go on living his life until the South tried to strongarm him into giving up a small saltpeter mine he owned to make gunpowder for the war. Southern raiders began attacking the outlying farms to put pressure on the town, and his response was to raise a Union militia to protect it. He was assassinated for it, but it angered the old men who made up the militia enough that they drove the raiders out of East TN back into North Carolina. It was THESE United States... not THE United States...
Fair enough. I can believe people would fight for their neighbors against the barbarians on the other side of a line, as that's kind of the whole of human history. I still don't think secession would have happened at the level of the southern states leaders (and thus the northern invasion) but for the disagreement with the north on the slave issue. Which, I wouldn't say much of anyone chose to fight to avenge the archduke beyond some of his relatives who didn't themselves fight, but I would say folks fought as a result of the assassination. With all of the treaties Europe had entangled itself in, something would have set off much the same thing if he hadn't gotten whacked, but since that event occurred, it set fire to the powder. Awful lot about there about Slavery. Posted by: Luap Nor's last brain cell at April 10, 2015 02:07 AM (Vyg9x) Again, when you look at this as 13 slave-holding colonies, they pretty much all had slaves before about 1750. The Constitution held that there would be no Federal action against slavery until 1808. In the meantime, northern states shipped their slaves south and barred the door -- quoting liberally from Wikipedia: "Vermont's 1777 constitution made no allowance for slavery. In Massachusetts, slavery was successfully challenged in court in 1783". [http://tinyurl.com/6kdgw9] "Most northern states passed legislation for gradual abolition, first freeing children born to slave mothers (and providing for them to serve indentures to their mother's masters, often into their 20s as young adults). As a result of this gradualist approach, New York did not free its last slaves until 1827, Rhode Island had five slaves still listed in the 1840 census, Pennsylvania's last slaves were freed in 1847, Connecticut did not completely abolish slavery until 1848, and slavery was not completely lifted in New Hampshire and New Jersey until the nationwide emancipation in 1865." The US criminalized the international slave trade in 1808. So, now we see what is missing from the SC statement: "You assholes. You were all 'whee, let's have slaves!' until it started getting morally difficult to justify, whereupon you sold all of yours down here. Now that all the slaves are down here and you have all the money, you jackasses are all 'holier-than-thou' and 'it's sinful' and want to meddle with our shit, when -- thanks to you -- we can't sell 'em off internationally to Mexico or Brazil or sell them West to Arizona. Yeah, that's why I referenced Civ 4. I really wanted to like 5, with the generalizing of the happiness mechanic and Panzer General style combat. The problem is the mods for 4 were just immense. I mean if you play a game all day to take your people from the discovery of fire to get within sight of writing, all the while fighting a general war against barbarians, you really feel like you've accomplished some history. 5 for all that it added felt like a streamlined version of 4. Which I guess is okay if your the staff at firaxis and want to finish a game in an afternoon, but it just felt terribly empty even with both expansions. I have to play it (and it's been a while since I did) with like 120 mods for wonders and infrastructure just to feel like I've got a complete game, and the AI is dreadful. I've actually had to turn barbarians off to keep the computer players in the game because they refuse to defend their settlers. Posted by: Methos at April 10, 2015 02:49 AM (ZbV+0) 418

Again, the whole idea of cramming the slave problem into fewer and fewer states while the other states got more-and-more self-righteous about it was a recipe for disaster. Just for fun-and-games, Liberia (in Africa) became a country in 1847 in an ultimately-doomed attempt to provide a safety valve. What if it had worked? As a total aside, I noted something interesting and peculiar as I was tooling around the south in the last couple of years.
If' I'm tooling around North Carolina, and pull off the road to fill-up at a gas station, and 80% of the people I see around are black, it's no big deal. If I'm tooling around Oakland or LA, and pull off the road to fill-up at a gas station, and 80% of the people I see around are black, I'll get back on the road. A lot of SJW would love to scream "racism" here -- to which I'll gladly reply "fuck you sideways with a rusty barbed-wire wrapped pineapple." Some of that ilk might go, "oh, you're biased against Oakland or LA" -- and I might even cop to that. But it's peculiar. I once ended up in a high-end enclosed shopping mall in Atlanta where it looked like I was one of three white people in the entire place.....and very much felt like everyone was staring at me (they probably were), but never felt threatened. Pinned-down on a microscope slide, sure -- but not threatened. It's almost like there's some weird cofactor that's at work. Like if you're Irish and wear a purple shirt, you're 30% likely to become violent -- and if you're black and wear a purple shirt, you're 90% likely to become violent.....but it's so much easier to notice if you're black than if you're Irish that your screening algorithm goes: "black -- look for purple shirt NOW! otherwise, see if you casually notice any purple shirts." Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, April 10, 2015. On this day in 1963 the submarine USS Thresher was lost at sea with 129 seamen aboard. The Navy believes she was lost due to a broken saltwater connection that sprayed on an electrical panel causing a reactor scram. Following the scram the blowing of ballast tanks failed due to moisture in the high pressure air causing the lines to freeze.

Too few people understand the camera tricks Hollywood uses to produce a movie. Just turning on a camera isn't enough. Wearing a helmet cam, or a body cam isn't enough. Obama claims to know everything about everything and then orders a State Department flunky to stand in front of the cameras and say the President was a little mixed up and didn't say what he meant to say and what he meant to say was.....
and this is not a reflection on the president who is under a lot of stress trying to manage the conflagration that looks to soon consume 3/4 of the planet. Posted by: Claytun Oskgarde at April 10, 2015 07:50 AM (EYLR0) 542

Posted by: Nip Sip at April 10, 2015 07:48 AM (0FSuD) That was a "deal" worked out by the SC GOP with the NAACP. However, we now have a black Senator who was previously the rep for district 1. I would say it is time to gerrymander him out of minority majority districr, especially since the supremes have declared them "bad". And that case was actually brought by the NAACP who said it was a ploy to get more Republicans elected vs Democrats. (In AL I think). . . . .While that was an actual plan that was being worked on, it was never going to happen due to compensation. Sooo, I'm watching an episode of Sam and Cat with my kids before getting ready for school. It's about a guy who gets their favorite soda banned because it has too much sugar. They figure out the formula and make a bootleg version and sell it. Then, they firmly rebuke him at the end of the episode for punishing everyone for the irresponsibility of a few. I'm thinking of setting this thing on a loop so my kids can memorize the ending.

Tsarnaev didn't do anything praisworthy, like shoot up a Tea Party event; he was gauche enough to attack an event Our Betters use as a secular holy day. He committed a crime against the ruling elite, which I why I think a DP is likely. Otherwise, he'd be the new Mumia. The local cop called them due to how the crazy woman tried to escape. She climbed up into the hanging ceiling and was trying to hide up there. The cop called the SWAT team to help get her down because they were worried she would bring the whole ceiling down. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at April 10, 2015 08:11 AM (wlDny) 572

Posted by: Rolling Stone at April 10, 2015 08:11 AM (yxw0r) In Calif they can retry the penalty trial if they dont get a death verdict. I've seen some horrendous cases in Tx come back with life b/c one juror lied and said they cd impose the death penalty if warranted but had no intention to do so. Case I'm thinking of was a prisoner who committed murder in Missouri and then escaped heading for the border. In TX he stopped and murdered an entire family including the pregnant mother. 571 Vic, I read it all. Needles were found in her purse, and the store security freak out, she "escapes" climbing into the ceiling. As per fearing the ceiling collapse from one person, that would more likely result given more men climbing up to find her. The story didn't relay her weight, but adding more police adds that much more stress on the ceiling structurally.
Of course the store manager has the responsibility to get her out of the premises. You may as well admit that for $8.50, the store lost a lot more over her stolen chips and hair clips -- that apprehension for shoplifting needs a better approach than what was taken by management over the principle of theft. The threat to society, imho, is in today's police response to a misdemeanor call. She wasn't armed, yet police protocol brought in the SWAT. So -- mountain out of a molehill. As I said yesterday, this is our particular bag of crazy goings on. And Vic is right. Woman in false overhead creates a danger for any individuals potentially under her if the false ceiling collapses down on them. Store can not remain open due to potential liability. SWAT has assets to allow remote location of individual. It actually made sense to do it this way. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at April 10, 2015 08:25 AM (jhIxG) 586
