This week's GLoP podcast on Ricochet with Jonah Goldberg, Rob Long, and John Podhoretz was particularly good so I'm just going to steal this long excerpt compiled by Ed Driscoll. I am however omitting the part where they talked about their experiences at orgies. And no I'm not just making that up.
JOHN PODHORETZ: You talk about people's ordinary skepticism, or common skepticism. I would submit to you that once something becomes a hot ideologically-charged topic, that skepticism is not only suspended in most cases, but it is understood by everyone around - on all sides of the debate - that it is dangerous to your reputation, to your sanity, and to the good working order of your day, to even whisper a breath of skepticism.* * * * * *
JONAH GOLDBERG: I read the entire Columbia report, and there is no allegation that anybody except for "Jackie" lied or purposefully misrepresented the truth. You're absolutely right John, about people losing their skepticism when they get caught up in the sort of ideological St. Vitas' Dance of the moment, and we see this on a grand scale with things like global warming and other groupthink problems. But this was a situation where it wasn't just their skepticism, but it was the mechanisms and procedures that were in place. At time and time again, the rules said, we've got to get a second source on this. The rules said, we got to [give] the accused a chance to comment. The rules said, we've got confirm the date and the identity of these people. And in each and every step, Jann Wenner and Will Dana and Sabrina Erdely all decided at one point or another to go another way. They all decided to drop the rules that they had in place. That's why I think this is much more like the Dan Rather stuff. Because this was just something they wanted to be true for ideological and political reasons so badly, that they thought it was worth dropping the normal rules.
And it does get to this other issue, which nobody wants to talk about, which is, what is it about college campuses today that sets up an environment where some many young people feel compelled to lie about their oppression? It's not just this "Jackie" girl, who lied and lied and lied for months on end to a reporter, and was fine with her story being written, as long as no one fact-checked it. (Which is a kind of dementia in a lot of ways.) But also on college campuses after college campuses, racial hoaxes happen all the time, and administrations shut them down because they don't like the bad publicity.
It's a state of hysteria - it's very much like Salem. There was the one at - was it Oberlin? - where someone came out in a white blanket on a cold day, and the first instinct was: Oh my God, the Klan is here!
ROB LONG: The Klan is at Oberlin! Yeah, they're at Oberlin.
PODHORETZ: Yeah, they're taking cello lessons.
GOLDBERG: And they had days of meetings and panic about that, and they wanted to see if accused racist children would float in the horse trough or not! It was just like a total witch trial mentality and this is going on campuses.
LONG: Why is that?
GOLDBERG: .And Rolling Stone suspended the rules, because they believed this girl so much.
PODHORETZ: OK, can I give you my theory about college campuses? We can talk about the professoriate, and we can talk about student activist groups, and all of this. But there is a third force on college campuses. And it is this bureaucracy of counseling. In field after field, in gender, in race, in sexuality, there is now this bureaucracy that has come up to help counsel kids with their problems on college campuses.
And one of the problems is, it's a classic thing in economics: if you subsidize something, you get more of it. So if you have counseling bureaucracies, one of the things that a counselor in problems involving gender is going to find is more problems involving gender. More discrimination. More hostility. Same with race. Same with LGBT. And when you create a permanently-employed bureaucracy that is in part enriched by these things happening, because of course, then maybe you can hire more counselors and you are more central to the university's mission, and your center gets more money, and you get raises, and all of that.
And you believe in it! I'm not saying by the way, that counselors don't believe that there is an epidemic of rape on college campuses, and that if you're black, your life is a misery at all college campuses. And if you're gay, terrible things are going to happen to you, because somebody looks at you cross-eyed when you walk across the campus.
They believe all this. But it is also in their innate interest, and it also in the interest in the campus itself to be able say, "Hey, you know what?! Your kids are safe. [Adopts sing-song-y nanny voice] Look, if anything's wrong they can go to the counseling center!"
LONG: Isn't it also this weird thing that...I'm now going to say something completely incendiary, without a shred of proof or backup. But it seems to me that these are all white kids running around saying "we have been raped" or [the victims of] "micro-aggression," and all that stuff.
It's like they have envy. They get to college after 20 or 30 years of very complicated ethnic and racial diversity training on college campuses. Now the white kids want in, so everyone's got to be a victim. Everyone arrives in college as this horribly wounded, vulnerable bird. And college is supposed to be place where you're sort of massaged and you're padded and this institution of therapy around you. To try to make it OK about the trauma that you've suffered to get there, to get to Oberlin.
PODHORETZ: But it doesn't have to be everybody; that's partially, I think Jonah's point. It can be two people, it can be three people, on a campus of 4,000 or 25,000, or 50,000, who can turn the place upside-down. Somebody paints a swastika on his own door, and the entire place revolved around this fact for an entire week. It is very empowering of dangerously deluded or fallacious behavior.
GOLDBERG: We're in a weird Nietzschian transition moment where victimhood is the way you assert your will to power.
LONG: Yes, exactly right.
They had one job. And they were incompetent at that.
But that's not even enough, now that we have tens of thousands of useless people whose job is to conduct Reconstruction, as if that had not been done, already, historically speaking; and who work most often at cross-purposes to institutional goals of unity and solidarity in the ranks. No, in recent years the DOD budget has become a Christmas Tree of handouts to professional Diversity Firms, the noxious product of all those university racialist Grievance Studies departments. So it's bad enough that your unit must bear the dead weight of an EO NCO who is, most often, a complete waste of skin. But now he doesn't even have to do his single actual duty, his annual Don't Be A Racist In My Army brief, because it's been outsourced to some gang of racial grievance entrepreneurs who are connected to Administration figures. So now, some fat chick from White Guilt Industries® comes in and reads the slides, and gets $20k for the day she goes around from unit to unit telling all the races they should be at loggerheads.
...The Army EO Program has decided that they will respond to this. How so? Everyone gets to experience more EO Lectures, and the EO NCOs will get more training on how to teach White Privilege to auditoriums full of privileged PFCs. Well, I think somebody actually wants to hire me this time. I think yesterday I mentioned that my first job wanted me to go to a nearby employment agency for testing and registration.
Anyway, because I had my second interview, I couldn't make it to the agency yesterday, but planned to go today. Well, this morning at about 9, my interviewer actually *called* to make sure I went to the agency. I phoned her back and told her I was going that morning, which she seemed to like to hear.
So I filed out the online application, called, and they said it would take over two hours for their office to get my online application, which IMHO makes *no sense whatsoever.* But they said if I came in that afternoon, they should have my info. So I made an appointment for 1:30pm. (This call to the agency was at about 10:15am.)
I go there, have lunch at Taco Bell (darn it but the Chipotle Chixstar is good), made certain I didn't spill anything on my shirt, and finally walked in the place at 1:25. Keep in mind, I'm desperate enough for a job that this place, and the actual site where the job is, are about 30 miles away from me.
So what happens? Their entire registration system is down, and they said I should come back Monday. They couldn't have called me of course, I had to *actually drive there* for them to tell me this.
So I called the lady who interviewed me, because she seemed like she wanted to make a decision on this data entry job, and told her that I couldn't get a follow-up interview on Monday because of the computer glitches.
So at about 5pm, I got a voicemail. The lady called the agency and spoke to the manager, and now she wants me to call the agency *again* tomorrow morning and get the registration and testing hammered out and done.
Okay, fine. At least she seems to want to hire me. Kinda frustrating to have to make *three* sorta long trips to get considered, though. Will definitely call the agency before leaving, to make sure they're ready for me.
In the meantime, I sent out about four or five more applications, *and* heard from a *big* healthcare company about an interview next week. *That* job pays better and, even though downtown, would probably be a shorter commute. So who knows what will happen, but at least I'm still getting leads.
And that was the day that was...

I do typing, transcription, and admin/clerical support. I also know Microsoft Office backwards and forwards. BUT... in today's market, that stuff seems to be a dime a dozen, or has been becoming that for years. And let's be honest: in 20 years typing will be gone, mostly replace by voice commands.
I have given some serious thought to going to Paralegal school (don't worry Horde, I have *no* plans to go whole hog and become an attorney). I also like the idea of learning more about computer repair, becoming a realtor, running an online radio station... and oh yeah, becoming a pro screenwriter.
Dreams, dreams, dreams. Hope to move on something soon though. I *did* complete my very first script a few months ago though. It's a piece of crap, but... ;-)

Interesting anecdote about the Mexican war experience and Grant's appearance at Appomattox. Obviously due to the familiarity/friendship/former service together of so many officers on both sides and the common language and (to a degree) culture, the Civil War has the most amazing inter-personal stories of any I've studied. I think the Vicksburg surrender was delayed a few days by a snit between Grant and his Confederate opposite number, related to the fact that Grant owed him money (!) from their time together in California, and the Confederate officer therefore thought he was owed a few favors on surrender terms.
You just don't get that sort of stuff in most modern wars.

On the southern side, I don't know how you claim slavery wasn't part of it. What they wanted to prevent was having their slaves taken from them. Now, skipping for a moment the incompatibility of slavery with the American notion of freedom, they did kind of have a point that at the time, you're talking about financially ruining much of the south as slaves weren't *free* to their owners-even their deplorable living conditions had cost associated to it. It wasn't unreasonable for southerners to fight to protect their investments (as they saw them).
I've heard in recent years there had been an idea to buy out the South, but I'm not sure I believe that. At least not that it was taken very seriously. I don't know if DC could have raised enough to do it (considering there was no income tax at that point), but it'd be interesting in a head-of-a-pin sort of way to see those numbers crunched out. It would have been worth it to keep all those men on both sides alive, I think, but I doubt the case could have been really made before the war.

I made a comment last weekend about how Bob Dylan and the Band spent much of 1967 holed up in a house recording music that had nothing at all to do with the "Summer of Love", "psychedelia", or anything else that was going on at the time. This song seems to have been an outgrowth of that, although it was recorded and released two years later.

Well that's a fair point. I don't know the ratio of honorary citizens to actual citizens in the northern army, so maybe I shouldn't have used the term average. But certainly it was many, even if it was rationalization for the shitty circumstance they found themselves in.
And I don't know what you think southerners were fighting for. You can say independence, but there wasn't any reason to want independence beyond protecting what they would have seen as their property rights, even if it wasn't they themselves that owned slaves.
That, by the way isn't me trying to pick a fight, as it's late. If you have a suggestion what motivated the South to split off and fight (or individuals to fight assuming they weren't similarly conscripted) that was totally unrelated to slavery, I'm interested in hearing it.

Its actually pretty simple... and this is from letters written at the time...
Remember that before the Civil War... you were considered to be a citizen of your STATE... and that State, was part of the Union.
It was THESE United States... not THE United States...
So when Virginia was invaded by the North... they rallied to defend their STATE... because that was who they felt loyalty to... not a Federal Government...
Note... every Confederate Unit, was from a State... raised by that State... there were no 'Federal' units like the North had.... and expanded as the War went on.
They were, very simply... defending their State...
My last name is not very common... and yet when you search the rolls of the Various Civil War Regiments... you will find that almost ALL of the Family served... mainly in the Cavalry.
Saying the South fought for Slavery, is like saying everyone on the Allied side in WW1, fought for the Archduke who got killed....

The loyalties were complicated, and people fought on the sides they did for a wide number of reasons. One of my ancestors tried to be neutral and just go on living his life until the South tried to strongarm him into giving up a small saltpeter mine he owned to make gunpowder for the war. Southern raiders began attacking the outlying farms to put pressure on the town, and his response was to raise a Union militia to protect it. He was assassinated for it, but it angered the old men who made up the militia enough that they drove the raiders out of East TN back into North Carolina.

I still don't think secession would have happened at the level of the southern states leaders (and thus the northern invasion) but for the disagreement with the north on the slave issue. Which, I wouldn't say much of anyone chose to fight to avenge the archduke beyond some of his relatives who didn't themselves fight, but I would say folks fought as a result of the assassination. With all of the treaties Europe had entangled itself in, something would have set off much the same thing if he hadn't gotten whacked, but since that event occurred, it set fire to the powder.

Again, when you look at this as 13 slave-holding colonies, they pretty much all had slaves before about 1750. The Constitution held that there would be no Federal action against slavery until 1808. In the meantime, northern states shipped their slaves south and barred the door -- quoting liberally from Wikipedia: "Vermont's 1777 constitution made no allowance for slavery. In
Massachusetts, slavery was successfully challenged in court in 1783". [http://tinyurl.com/6kdgw9]
"Most northern states passed legislation for gradual abolition, first
freeing children born to slave mothers (and providing for them to serve

Yeah, that's why I referenced Civ 4.
I really wanted to like 5, with the generalizing of the happiness mechanic and Panzer General style combat. The problem is the mods for 4 were just immense. I mean if you play a game all day to take your people from the discovery of fire to get within sight of writing, all the while fighting a general war against barbarians, you really feel like you've accomplished some history.
5 for all that it added felt like a streamlined version of 4. Which I guess is okay if your the staff at firaxis and want to finish a game in an afternoon, but it just felt terribly empty even with both expansions. I have to play it (and it's been a while since I did) with like 120 mods for wonders and infrastructure just to feel like I've got a complete game, and the AI is dreadful. I've actually had to turn barbarians off to keep the computer players in the game because they refuse to defend their settlers.

My belief is that we'd have different footnotes, but the history of the war would have been much the same. Again, the whole idea of cramming the slave problem into fewer and fewer states while the other states got more-and-more self-righteous about it was a recipe for disaster.

I once ended up in a high-end enclosed shopping mall in Atlanta where it looked like I was one of three white people in the entire place.....and very much felt like everyone was staring at me (they probably were), but never felt threatened. Pinned-down on a microscope slide, sure -- but not threatened.
It's almost like there's some weird cofactor that's at work. Like if you're Irish and wear a purple shirt, you're 30% likely to become violent -- and if you're black and wear a purple shirt, you're 90% likely to become violent.....but it's so much easier to notice if you're black than if you're Irish that your screening algorithm goes: "black -- look for purple shirt NOW! otherwise, see if you casually notice any purple shirts."

Another one of those "hmmmm" things is that The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 only freed slaves in the unoccupied areas of the Confederacy. Anywhere under Union control was unchanged. Even the 1865 13th Amendment extended only to states....Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) retained slavery until 1866.

That was a "deal" worked out by the SC GOP with the NAACP. However, we now have a black Senator who was previously the rep for district 1. I would say it is time to gerrymander him out of minority majority districr, especially since the supremes have declared them "bad". You didn't read the details close enough. The Giant store did not call the SWAT team. The local cop called them due to how the crazy woman tried to escape. She climbed up into the hanging ceiling and was trying to hide up there.
The cop called the SWAT team to help get her down because they were worried she would bring the whole ceiling down.

In Calif they can retry the penalty trial if they dont get a death verdict. I've seen some horrendous cases in Tx come back with life b/c one juror lied and said they cd impose the death penalty if warranted but had no intention to do so. Case I'm thinking of was a prisoner who committed murder in Missouri and then escaped heading for the border. In TX he stopped and murdered an entire family including the pregnant mother.

Of course the store manager has the responsibility to get her out of the premises.
You may as well admit that for $8.50, the store lost a lot more over her stolen chips and hair clips -- that apprehension for shoplifting needs a better approach than what was taken by management over the principle of theft.
The threat to society, imho, is in today's police response to a misdemeanor call. She wasn't armed, yet police protocol brought in the SWAT.
So -- mountain out of a molehill.

And Vic is right.
Woman in false overhead creates a danger for any individuals potentially under her if the false ceiling collapses down on them.
Store can not remain open due to potential liability.
SWAT has assets to allow remote location of individual.
It actually made sense to do it this way.
