Skipped the SCOAMF SOTU troll speech. Watched Joni Ernst. Not impressed. I like her, but just as whoever coaches these responses, it was horrid delivery and reminded me of Bobby's stunted delivery and Rubio's need to drink. Doesn't matter in big picture, but really... whoever the RNC uses to prepare these responses needs to be fired.

I failed to watch the speeches. Might be the first time in memory, but it's got to the point where TFG just is such an asshole I start yelling at the TV and Joni Ernst is now a Senator, and we all know that kills the brain, so skip her too. I guess I'm now a LIV.

Now that zero has laid out more of his plans for the destruction of the country I'm sure the GOP will quickly move to do nothing. We keep thinking that the national nightmare will be over in a couple of years but I see nothing at this point that indicates that will be true. We'll get some mealy mouthed candidate who will lose to hilldog or the equivalent and then 8 more years of SSDD. I'm an optimist in general but reality trumps optimism every time. Yesterday my Geology professor started class with a discussion of the scientific method, and the importance of data integrity and observation in context with established laws and theorems, then proceeded to state with a straight face that global warming should be considered a 'fact'. Then at the end of the day as I was walking across campus to go to my car, I passed through the area by the library and what do I see? A bunch of #Blacklivesmatter 'gravestones' picketed in the lawn. I have never watched any of Obama's SOTU addresses. He's like every other marxist I've ever heard. All the people at work are rather pessimistic about the 7 days of sick leave thing. We all figure that we'll definitely lose our two personal days (two days we can take no matter what, no matter how many people have taken vacation.) and possibly lose a week ofvacation time (40 hours). So yeah, not very optimistic here. Posted by: nnptcgrad at January 21, 2015 07:11 AM (wrS2o) 94

Granted it's not great that we only get sick days if we're so sick we have to go to the hospital and have a doctor sign a script saying we need to stay home, which is then good for three days. It means we've had colds and theflu sweep through on a regular basis. As far as I'm concerned going to the doctor because I have a cold, is a waste of both my time and the doctor's. I just usually go to bed as soon as possible. Would it be nice to be able to just call in sick? Yes, but I'd rather have my vacation time, simply because I'm too honest to use sick days other than when I've very, very sick. Childish Bully Administration. OBAMA TEAM CAN'T HELP BUT BE PETTY AND CHILDISH TO FOX NEWS AT 'STATE OF THE UNION' LUNCH ...But at the end of his broadcast, the Fox anchor pointed out a minor -- but almost certainly intentional -- difference between his fancy place card and those of the other network anchors. "I sat next to Brian Williams, and we all had these place cards, and his said 'Brian Williams, NBC News,'" Smith explained. "And across from me was David Muir - the new guy on ABC -- it said 'David Muir, ABC News.'" "And I looked at mine, and it doesn't say anything about news," he continued, holding up the place card. "It just says 'Fox.' And I looked at [Fox anchor] Bret Baier's, and it said, 'Bret Baier, Fox.' And all the rest of them said news." "I mean I don't care, lunch was great," Smith said. "But I guess, message received? I think Bret and I are good to go with the news part." demented minds truly disturbing My opinion, Fox is king, so they don't need the "news" tag. therightscoop for video Posted by: artisanal 'ette at January 21, 2015 07:35 AM (IXrOn) 130

And the ref who tosses it in from the sideline or the end of the play to the ref who officially spots it, didn't notice anything squishy? If the football was "soft enough" to make a difference, one would think that the refs would notice. There are other ways to cheat. Kinda risky giving the item to the ref each play. We need a legitimate voter revolt.
We saw once again what all of the "if you don't vote for the establishment candidate you are effectively voting for the opposition" bullshit got us. Just like every other recent election, the Republicans snatch the ball away at the last second. Especially at this time, with the platform of social media, a voter revolt is at least minimally feasible. Feasible enough at least where it might send a message that would finally get through. The reason why what is happening in this country continues to happen is because it is profitable to the people in charge. Human nature is in control of politics instead of patriotic altruism. Until there is a cost for perpetual political self interest in Washington, things will not change. My lame ass two cents. You would think. I mean, common sense tells you that if a ball isn't inflated all the way, the professionals on the field would have noticed. But suddenly, there are today, thousands upon thousands of newly minted experts on the internal barometric pressure of footballs, and they all KNOW this means the Patriots cheated. The science is settled. Posted by: BurtTC at January 21, 2015 08:03 AM (Dj0WE) 191
Were the balls initial pressure test prior to the game conducted at the ambient temperature of the time of the game? I see that the preliminary tests were conducted during the game. Was the follow on pressure test during the actual investigation conducted at the same temperature, or at a higher/lower temperature. Were the balls used by the Colts also tested, and if so, what were the findings. Perhaps the Pats are a team that is both very good...and a team that cheats. Neither is mutually exclusive. Prior to this story I would have assumed the refs would take a ball out of the game if it was suspect, or at least bring it up to the proper inflation. In baseball they toss balls out all the time, basketball I've seen officials messing with gauges and pumps, so they keep track of the ball during games, football has a weird system, each team brings their own balls and each QB "sets" them to his own preferred condition before the game. We'll see if that stays the same after this season. The immediate question is "who deflated?". Per ex-players, prior to the game, the balls are in the Quarterback's possession, then the officials, then the attendants, with no coaches in the chain of custody. Maybe a ball boy with a pin?

We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes non work. If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand. Indeed, a major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it... gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 21, 2015 08:15 AM (CMkNk) 227

A few thoughts on ballgate (from a guy with some chem engg education)
1 - air doesn't weigh much, an under-inflated ball and a fully inflated ball would weigh almost the same and not be detectable unless you had a scale with about 4 decimal places. 2 - Ideal Law of Gases PV=nRT means that as the temperature goes down, so does either the pressure or volume of the gas. If the balls were verified indoors before the game and then brought outside to the cold, its no wonder they lost pressure. Were the Colts balls checked for same ? I hate Belicheck and know he's a cheater - but this seems to be much ado about nothing. Posted by: McCool at January 21, 2015 08:26 AM (TQxRy) 254

We'll see what the lawyers and PR people tell him.

means that as the temperature goes down, so does either the pressure or volume of the gas. If the balls were verified indoors before the game and then brought outside to the cold, its no wonder they lost pressure. Were the Colts balls checked for same ? In theory, you would have to put less air in the football to obtain the same pressure inside the ball because the opposing pressure outside the ball is less than lower altitude locations. So if you inflated it in New York and brought it to Denver, the pressure would increase. I'm no Patriots fan, for sure, but whining over
partly deflated footballs sounds pretty stupid. The Colts got killed at the line of scrimmage. The game wasn't close in any phase. Not sure what difference lower pressure footballs made but one thing is certain, it wasn't the deciding factor in the score. Posted by: MTF at January 21, 2015 08:09 AM (LISuA) The balls didn't decide THIS game but does anyone really think that this is the first time that Belicheat did this? Also, speaking as a guy who played tight end in college, the air pressure in the ball makes a big difference when catching/throwing the ball in the cold and especially wet conditions. This is just another in the long line of NFL fuckups this year. I really barely even care anymore. Give me a FCS or high school game any day. Also Goodell will cock this up for sure to protect his favorite owner Krafty Bob. Finally, the teams use the balls on their own sideline. They don't use the same ones. That's how someone on the Pats sideline changes only their balls. When the Colt player intercepted a pass, he noticed that the ball is soft. Posted by: Timon at January 21, 2015 08:50 AM (prxEj) 321
My sole contribution to Ballgate will be to note that our local classic rock station did a great AC/DC parody called "Soft Balls." I'll leave the lyrics to the Horde's fertile imagination.

The Pats probably did cheat, it's pretty hard to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point. And they probably did it because the game *might* have been close.
But seriously, they pummeled the Colts, and it wouldn't have mattered whether the balls were as light as beach balls or as heavy as medicine balls. The Pats absolutely own the Colts right now. Re nitrogen only in your tires: My Benz is a nitrogen-only vehicle (I think it comes with the super unleaded-only package). The stated difference is that nitrogen molecules are larger than the regular-ass air molecules from the pressure hose, so the tires will deflate slower during large temp swings. Pretty dubious, but I do it anyway since the dealership is on my way to work. Lol at the way we do things sometimes just because some jackass said so.

DHMO has nothing on Hydroxyic acid. The latter is a tremendously effective solvent, often called "universal". In high enough concentrations, it is invariably fatal to air-breathing animals and plants.
Very dangerous stuff this chemistry, in the hands and minds of typical Obama LIVs. They will demand chemical-free foods and drinks. Lets help these poor misguided Obama LIVs out by demanding that DHMO and Hydroxic acid be removed from all their foods, and drinks. Then we should be removing as many of the carbon based compounds from their food, because global warming or something. It is slightly larger, this is true (covalent bonding radius is about 5 picometers larger for Nitrogen), but at the scale that Boyle's law acts on, it makes no difference. Here's a long random personal news comment in a attempt to bring up BenK thread in that magical willowy way.
* So, day before yesterday, the dentist (finally) re-filled my lost filling. Hooray for modern painless dentistry! I'm a time-traveler from the 1950s where, not only was it was more primitive, but the family dentist's idea of "painless" was "Buck up, kid. You can take it." Still don't like the drilling part. Painless it may be, but there's the screech of the drilling and the smell of burnt bone which evokes my childhood trauma and anyway yuck, right? But this time was the easiest drilling ever since he just had to clean up the existing hole. So there's that. TMI? The tooth is a wisdom tooth, and, apparently, he really doesn't want to build me a crown 'way back up there. Can't blame him. I'll get by, I guess.... I'm fond of my teeth. Had them most of my life. * Also * My cousin in the hospital woke up enough to pull the feeding tube out of her nose and fight off the nurses trying to re-insert it. And she only has use of one arm. Good to know she has her fire. Thanks for prayers & thoughts for her continuing recovery. She's improving a little. * Also * The furnace guy came out yesterday, assessed that it was indeed the vent fan that was shot, and said he could be back out here in the afternoon today to replace it. So, looks like we won't have mid-Winter heat interruption. Meanwhile, the vent fan sounds like a truck engine. * Did it work? According to a National Football League letter about the investigation into the controversy that was shared with the Globe, the Patriots were informed that the league's initial findings indicated that the game balls did not meet specifications. The league inspected each of the Patriots' 12 game balls twice at halftime, using different pressure gauges, and found footballs that were not properly inflated.
According to ESPN, 11 of the 12 game balls were found to be underinflated by about 2 pounds each. The NFL specifications say they must be inflated to 12½ to 13½ pounds. Posted by: Die Fledermaus at January 21, 2015 09:44 AM (e8kgV) 485

1) I still get chills at the Pledge of Allegiance.
Posted by: AllenG This reminds me...a few years back, I was active in Kiwanis Club. Our local chapter had a tradition of saying the pledge of allegiance at the opening of every meeting followed by a brief rendition of the first couple verses of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." One of our most animated and leading members was a WWII vet with two silver stars and a bronze star who had participated in the D-Day landing and the Battle of the Bulge, as part of the 4th ID I believe. He sang louder than anyone else in the room and with such spirit, gave me chills every single time. No longer with us, I'm sad to say. A remarkable man all around. Then the refs need to have custody of the footballs throughout the game. In fact, have each team supply the balls, the refs check them and put them in a big bag, and when they need another football they just reach in and randomly pull one out.

@479 SmartWool is fine. My personal preference is Rohner, The Best Socks in The WorldTM. But I was talking about inclement emergencies. You know, the kind of stuff you teach young Scouts about, because after a solid month of Camp Alaska pre-training, Mommy will still drop them off for the overnighter wearing cotton jeans and what we used to call tennis shoes.
There's a fun demo you can do about socks: have a couple kids put on one cotton and one wool sock, spill about a cup of water on a concrete floor, and have them slide through it and then walk for a minute. They get the message real fast. I carry a pair of ex-Australian Army wool pants in my spares bag. They are the itchiest wool ever milled and weigh about six pounds dry. When a kid comes to winter camp in jeans and no long johns, and then sits in the snow (and they always will), I have the solution to his problem. He's warm and active all weekend. Not like tar on a baseball. Tar on a baseball is against the rules. I'm sure putting honey (or something sticky) on a football would be illegal, too. Most QBs don't like the brand new balls, so a lot of teams take them out early and rough them up. But that's why there are standards the teams have to meet- so that you can have a pretty good idea of how the ball is going to feel. Moving from outside that standard is where the problem lies. And as for the league providing the balls- I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I think right now they put down getting to provide your own game balls (tweaked, within the rules, how you like them) as part of "home field advantage." The vapor lock thing with plastic bags is pretty common with ultralight hikers.
I did a backpacking trip in snow with a synthetic sock, plastic bag, and wool sock layer under trail running shoes. Able to walk through snow and icy water with no problem. The wool sock insulated and dried quickly when wet, the plastic kept my foot dry and held warmth in, and the inner synthetic sock wicked moisture away and prevented blisters. I was pretty amazed how well it worked. Much more comfortable than boots, too. Posted by: brak at January 21, 2015 09:57 AM (Tj+s6) Posted by: Lizzy at January 21, 2015 09:58 AM (ABcz/) 525

She won't have time to loaf - she'll have just enough time to powder her doughs and get back at it. Maybe she could speak at the next Republican convection. Hopefully she can bake something positive out of this.

Pine tar on bats would be a better analogy. You can use it, but only to a certain point (ask George Brett). Of course there have been countless incidents of game balls at all levels of baseball being doctored, either by the pitcher, or by teams that store them in a freezers, in humidity, in high heat, etc. What advantages they give, I do not know. It's a cat and mouse game sometimes, and as long as there have been organized sports there has always been a mentality that it's only cheating if you get caught. I can understand that, again, up to a point. In the end, the under-inflated balls thing is such a silly matter, precisely because this game was so outrageously beyond that nonsense. At this point, it's all about Pats haters, hating on the Pats. Which I can accept. I mean, if this was the Giants, I'd be calling for Eli (Chelsea) Manning to be castrated. That is, if he had any balls in the first place. Which he doesn't. Posted by: BurtTC at January 21, 2015 10:30 AM (TOk1P) 580
Dept of Hope This Puts An End to It:
Know what they call the manual manipulation of rising bread dough? "Punching Down." ___________________ OK that's it from here, see you upstairs maybe, and at least nobody talked about pinching a loaf. Posted by: Stringer Davis at January 21, 2015 10:31 AM (xq1UY) 581
Good morning good people.
I hope everyone is doing well and may you have a fantastic day. I know you all hate Obama, but you have to admit things are better off than in 2008. Instead of trashing Obama, why not come up with better ideas that can win over voters. In the midterms that just passed, many Republican candidates ran positive campaigns and they won. So far for the upcoming Presidential campaign, i see nothing but negativity from Republicans Many Republicans are talking about social issues which is a turn off or racial crap. Why not run on uniting Americans and making this a better place for all. Posted by: Don't worry, be Happy! at January 21, 2015 10:44 AM (BptyK) 582

Troll! BTW: I only hear positive ideas from the people you accuse of negativity. Posted by: matthewjohn at January 21, 2015 11:09 AM (7pEow) 583
I'm with Aaron Rodgers on this: I prefer my balls over inflated.

Clinic think President Obama should disqualify that Patriarts Football team from that Super Bowl Thing. They probably will try to cheat the Quarterback of Colora on the SeattleSeehawks team from winning the Suprabowl. This all came about because Bush depises persons of color (Katrinna and New Orleens) and wants to put down Persons of color and persons of some color.
