I assume that bad sex writing describing a woman's experience was written by a man.
Didn't Clancy insert (SWIDT?) some sex into a couple of his books? I vaguely remember reading one of them - maybe it was the one about drug running - and thinking, "man, this dude should stick to military hardware." Posted by: Y-not at December 22, 2014 09:59 PM (9BRsg) 9

Also, since you're asking, I'd suggest buying from a store like Walmart/Best Buy instead of online, for easier return/exchange. Also check and see if you can get a price match vs. Amazon. The motley of bacteria and viruses comprising the bulk of Russell Brand's taint waited for their chance.
As the daft buffoon expelled his juices of decadence upon the perky flesh surrounding Katy Perry's mammary gland, Brand's taint surged forward and seeped deeply into Katy's fat tissue. Katy belated realized that she would forever be the carrier of Russell Brand's STDs, with her serving as both an incubator and a spreader of a plethora of disease. The two large orbs of flesh and fat that helped propel Katy to fame would now be her curse and her burden for the rest of her natural life. Around the world, things continue to burn. In baseball, he who doth pitch canst evermore commit a number of illegal motions or actions upon yon mound of lore. What pitcher doth on yonder hill hesitate unto his motion? Methinks most of these offenses foul doth involve the bearer of the pitch pretending to pitch when he hath no intention so of doing. That is an option, but I'd expect a TV to at least get 5 years of use. For that route, I'd definitely go HD (1080p). 4K is the newest hype, but there's no content for it yet. von Paulus of the 6th Army at Stalingrad was ordered to fight to the last man. Instead he surrendered to the Soviets and maybe 10 years after VE Day 8% of those German POWs returned home.
Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 22, 2014 10:15 PM (om3D0) He wasn't a "von". And those Germans weren't getting home no matter what he did. I do give him credit for not playing Hitler's game, however. He was promoted to Field Marshal a couple of days before the surrender, because Hitler knew that no Field Marshal of the German Army had ever been taken captive alive. Paulus, although an extremely mediocre general, was smart enough not to fall for into that trap. Posted by: CQD at December 22, 2014 10:24 PM (G8YYJ) 110

Q: Is It Possible to Extinguish the Sun with Water From a Sun-Sized Bucket?
Short answer: No. And it would be a very bad idea to even try. I remember reading a compendium of short sci-fi stories and one of them was about a kid who got a "start-up" kit to make their own small star. The kid got impatient and made a few mistakes, and the star "grew" to get the shape of a football instead of a sphere. In an effort to correct the mistake, the kid tried to extinguish the star with water. Instead of killing the star, the star condensed into an ever-growing dense spool of "thread". By the end of the story, this thread had ruptured the containment field of the kit and ended up destroying the world. Moral of the story is - read the damn instructions. So once the Egyptians had their hands on the plans for our aircraft carrier, what were they going to do with them? Peddle them to the Chinese or Russians? I can see no other use for them. They obviously aren't going to build a carrier for themselves and I seriously doubt they'll be able to build a weapon to counter the defensive abilities of a carrier group based on schematics. They need to squeeze someone and find out where these things were really destined.

"When his hand brushed her nipple it tripped a switch and she came
alight. He touched her belly and his hand seemed to burn through her. He lavished on her body indirect touches and bitter-sweet sensations flooded her brain. She became aware of places in her that could only have been concealed there by a god with a sense of humour. Adrift on warm currents, no longer of this world, she became aware of him gliding into her. He loved her with gentleness and strength, stroking her neck, praising her face with his hands, till she was broken up and began a low rhythmic wail. She was a little overwhelmed with being the adored focus of such power, as he rose and fell. She felt certain now that there was a heaven and that it was here, in her body. The universe was in her and with each movement it unfolded to her. Somewhere in the night a stray rocket went off." ------ So hot. Towel, please. I was in the 82d for three years from 1981-1984. Believe me, they are absolutely obsessed with the unit history. It was the 101st at Bastogne, with General McAuliffe. The quote that you posted from Wikipedia in number 70 is the equally famous admonition from a member of the 82d who was digging a foxhole when a tank drove by looking for the American lines after the initial attack in the Battle of the Bulge. The foxhole digger said, "You are safe here. I am the 82d ABN Division, and this is as far as the bastards are going." Quite inspirational, but it had nothing to do with Bastogne.

Bossy Conservative that relief force was polite fiction because Hitler was still ordering Army Group South to drive and seize the oil fields. So the full combat strength was not devoted to the relief of Stalingrad and the rescue of the 6th.
And in the Witch's Cauldron Stalingrad became, the Bulgarians and Italians who were holding the flanks for the 6th collapsed. Thus the Germans were encircled and doomed. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 22, 2014 10:36 PM (om3D0) 161

I've always heard him referred to as "von Paulus?"
But, yeah, many historicals just call him "Paulus." Posted by: Ricardo Kill at December 22, 2014 10:27 PM (pb82p) It's not just "many historicals". His given name was Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus. No "von". He was the son of a schoolteacher. And he is not referred to as "von Paulus" in any major history of the period. Again, he was a mediocre general, but smart enough not to be tricked into committing suicide. And he actually did survive Soviet captivity, so there's that as well. Yeah pretty much what I thought, there's nothing wrong with him. They've just been going with a more run heavy offensive style to be used to it when its needed. Correction to Sam Simon: Bill Cosby does not have a Ph.D., he has an Ed.D.
A Ph.D. Is supposed to require original research. An Ed.D thesis is really a term paper. In fact, UMass' Ed. Dept. was notorious by as early as 1985: http://tinyurl.com/pff24w9 They waived coursework and other requirements in favor of "life experience". An Ed.D. is kind of a joke. A sad example of degree inflation. Even if UMass knew Cosby didn't write his thesis, it doesn't appear they cared very much. Oh, and Jill Biden's Ed.D. program didn't even require a thesis. Not if it's the same set of requirements they have today. Posted by: AmishDude at December 22, 2014 10:52 PM (jyWrx) 240

Again a German tank, a Panther, got through along the Houffalize road and came to a halt in front of a house serving as the command post for the company of the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion. As the tank swung its cannon toward the front door, the company commander, Capt. Omar Billet, said a silent prayer. He got a quick answer: only twenty yards away, Sergeant Lesniak was able to traverse the damaged turret on his tank just far enough to enable his gunner to get a bead on the Panther.
The gunner fired three quick rounds from his 75, which did no apparent damage, yet that was enough for the German crew. The driver put the tank in reverse, only to run over a jeep, crushing it and fouling one of the tracks on the tank. Dragging the jeep with it, the tank continues to back up but next collided with a half-track. The collision tipped the tank precariously far over to one side; the crew bailed out and raced away from the village under concealment of the fog. pg 498-498. A Time for Trumpets. @214 - I wonder if Rapin' Bill Cosby ever raped any of his female cast members?
Michelle Hurd, who did stand-in work on "The Cosby Show" has publicly stated that Cosby was very inappropriate with her. He did "acting exercises" with her where he moved his hands all over her body - and told her never to tell anyone about it. He attempted to get her to come to his house and take a shower, so he could help her blow dry and straighten her hair. She declined. Another stand-in actress working on the show at the time DID go to Cosby's house and awoke after being drugged - and vomited. Hurd is unwilling to name that actress because the actress is unwilling to publically come forward with her story. Posted by: Jen at December 22, 2014 11:35 PM (msAGT) 344

135 So once the Egyptians had their hands on the plans for our aircraft carrier, what were they going to do with them? Peddle them to the Chinese or Russians? I can see no other use for them. They obviously aren't going to build a carrier for themselves and I seriously doubt they'll be able to build a weapon to counter the defensive abilities of a carrier group based on schematics. They need to squeeze someone and find out where these things were really destined.

I have loved "I Believe In Father Christmas" for years. I like the version on the ELP box set "Return of the Manticore", but this one is good too.
My take on the line "I saw him and through his disguise" has always been that it is about the realization that WE are Father Christmas. WE are the ones that make it happen. This is reinforced for me but the last line "The Christmas we get, we deserve" So, from my POV, the song is saying "You want a Merry Christmas? You want Peace On Earth? She was trying to make some equivalence between them and the cop killer in NY. When I pointed out that they had been expelled from Bundy and were if fact Occupiers, she tried linking a HuffPo article. Posted by: andycanuck at December 23, 2014 12:28 AM (AbfZY) ****** As a,former Sony guy, non IT, I do not find this to be too farfetched, based only on experience with the company and no factual backup. When Sony lost their innovative edge, the blame rolled downhill. Big Sony in Japan could not accept blame because culture, so the flailing hit all divisions. Kinda like an Obama speech after one of his fcukups. Those little men are supremely arrogant in the best of times. Worse, in the worst of times. I asked about you on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't an ONT screw up. I Hope You are back for good. I'm pretty good & my very ill younger brother managed, at long last, to get SSDI & transferred to nursing home in Massachusetts & has called me six times, at the most, since mid August. He's 33-35 miles away from me & his son is CNA at hospital if he has an emergency. Two so far that woke me in middle of night. Labor Day & Columbus Day. I was expecting call on Thanksgiving. His sin is 24 & w/in walking distance to both. I'm perturbed that he doesn't call me all the time & I've only visited him once & it doesn't count because he was in ICU & on ventilator & knocked out. Posted by: ginaswo at December 23, 2014 12:03 AM (2EgyQ) Well, who doesn't love Mr. Magoo? But I agree with you about the 1951 Alastair Sim version. Of the approximately 100 different screen productions, it is closest to the text and thus picks up most of Dickens' moral and ethical points, where most others have wandered far afield and completely missed them. Also, in addition to Sim, there were quite a few excellent supporting actors, including Hermione Baddeley, Peter Bull and Michael Hordern. And a very young Patrick MacNee. I have it on DVD and watch it a couple of times each season. Sadly, it's hardly ever on TV. Posted by: CQD at December 23, 2014 12:55 AM (G8YYJ) 517

I could see a Japanese company hiring a Westerner over a comparable Korean or Chinese person. Even baka gaijin-types have a better reputation than nearby Asian neighbors. Plus non-Asian gaijin don't count for 'inter-Asian play' which eliminates one possible area of conflict. Posted by: Maetenloch at December 23, 2014 01:11 AM (wqVD1) 555
The Japanese have never, ever considered themselves 'asian'.
Huh. The Koreans I've spoken with have pretty much come to terms that their language might be related to Japanese on one side and Turkic / Mongol / Manchu on the other. They know damn well they're not Chinese but they're pretty pleased to be Asian. I'm surprised to hear that the Japanese (who, as everyone agrees, migrated to Japan from the Korean peninsula) are disdaining their Asianity. What's interesting is how Asian students even behave in a collective. They travel in groups. Walking down the hallways or sidewalks, they're like bees; and they don't move to the side whilst most other student are walking individually or maybe in pairs. Just something I noticed.. Posted by: Soothsayer's Imaginary Home For Incorrigible Boys Girls at December 23, 2014 01:08 AM (TX2fN) eh I think it really depends. here's what i've noticed from the instructor's point of view... you'll generally have groups of asian stick together, but always with their own nationality. so chinese students with chinese students, vietnamese students with vietnamese students, etc. but then you will also find asian students who are basically totally westernized and you couldn't tell that they were any different from any other student. so they blend in with any crowd really. and in my experience the ones like that are most likely to be korean and japanese students. The vast majority of my experience with this was while in the Navy and Cali National Guard. While in the Navy, almost all the native Filipinos wanted absolutely nothing to do with me (there was one exception, and he's a Master Chief now). During time in Asian ports, I was demonstrably looked down upon by other Asians (Thailand and Singapore). When I was serving as a liaison with the JMSDF I was treated like absolute shit by the Japanese. My first Guard unit was regionally focused on the Far East, which means "lots of Koreans in the Battalion." Even there, I was looked upon as "the help;" neither my rank nor my competence was a factor. Again, there was one exception; a fellow (Korean) Sergeant explained to me what the situation was. All of the information made public points strongly to the penetration happening at the Culver City studios. It is also notable that all of the data dumps have been solely concerned with that portion of SPE. I rather doubt that lot has an exclusive on sandal worthy data. Sony Computer Entertainment America, the video game division, has dev studios fairly close by in Santa Monica and elsewhere in LA County, and ripping off files from there of unreleased games could very damaging but nothing of the sort has even been hinted at. Not that it was their emails, but the content. Content that in every other nation means shit, but in the US brought all kinds of media attention on the execs. Why would anyone in China give a shit what these execs thought movies that Obama would attend would be? Why it happened in Asia? It's Sony. One of the major Japanese corporations. I'll also mention that in my time at Sony I saw practices that would have been the stuff of nightmares in any other enterprise IT operation. The number of executives who relied on their assistants to keep track of their logins and passwords, yet had access to fairly sensitive material, was simply amazing. That some of those same execs are known as utter psychopaths you dare not turn your upon and burn through assistants at a rapid pace makes the studio ripe for any good social engineer to befriend a disgruntled ex-assistant and get a very big start on their penetration.

"balk'd in their own blood"
Come now. The men probably died in some linear order, so you may have been able to tell where the battle lines had stood, perhaps where they had been shot by distant arrow storms, and they fell closely enough to be in heaps that made someone think of furrows in a field. Common enough observation from the days of linear tactics. And perhaps as a kid, to make mud mounds, one has to add water, or it might be something from baking: balk flour for rolling with a pin by piling it up in a ridge, then adding water to get things started for rolling. If one did not have a mixing bowl, but just a flat board. Think if one was making biscuits, with individual heaps and mounds being piled up then having liquid added, then rolled and kneaded. Anna's probably gone, but WRT the earlier discussion of Stalingrad - weren't the Romanians also a key weakpoint for the 6th Army's position? I thought it was Romanian line that (??? forget which Marshal) targeted and cut on the way to collapsing the corridor the Krauts had west from the city.
Italians, too. Didn't recall Bulgarians. Didn't Bulgaria refuse to do much with the Reich, rallied around their defiant King, etc.? Gotta make my next stack of reading about central Europe and the eastern front, have been mired deep in the Pacific theater for years. Posted by: rhomboid at December 23, 2014 01:07 AM (afQnV) The Rumanians were the ones directly in the path of the Soviet offensive, flanked by Italians and Hungarians to the north. All ran away far enough and fast enough to avoid being surrounded and captured. You are correct about the Bulgarians, by the way. Although part of the Axis, they never declared war on the Soviet Union and never sent troops to the eastern front. They were more concerned with improving their local situation vis-a-vis the Greeks and Rumanians. If you are looking for recommendations for reading about the eastern front at the operational level, I suggest the U.S. Army's 1955 Historical Study (Department of the Army Pamphlet No. 20-261a) for the period 1940-1942 (includes pre-war planning) and its companion volume, written by Earl Ziemke, published by the University Press of the Pacific, entitled simply Stalingrad to Berlin. Another good single-volume work is Barbarossa, by Alan Clark. Hitler Moves East, by Paul Carell, is also interesting, but at a much more tactical level. Playing with my new Nvidia Shield Portable. The name is intended much in the sense the original Compaq PC was portable. You aren't going to take this thing with you the way you would a 3DS or Vita. Anyway, I'm surprised to find out Google doesn't have an exFAT license that covers certified Android devices. I had to pull the 64 GB microSD card I'd inserted and reformat it to NTFS.
It's a pretty nice device, especially for running emulators. It handles every console up to about the year 1999. The Dreamcast emulator is the most recent platform and that is pretty early in its development, with essentially nothing playing 100% correctly. But it may get much better over time. Besides, a big portion of the Dreamcast library has native Android ports. This is like the Neo-Geo of handhelds. Powerful but a bit pricey. Fortunately, the price is way down if you know where to look. (Yes, the current model will likely be replaced sometime in 2015 but if you get it cheap enough the value is there for a good time to come.) GameStop is currently selling it for $140 and thanks to some credits I had gathering dust it was closer to $100. The 64 GB card was a $20 Black Friday promo. Plus plenty of my existing Android purchases will run on this and recognize the gamepad inputs. Posted by: Epobirs at December 23, 2014 03:29 AM (IdCqF) 614

The most ridiculous shopping sight I had this year was the stores pushing Chromecast to people buying a PS4 or Xbox One. Complete waste if you already have the high powered game console connected to the same TV.

Again, I'm up far too early. I am now writing Christmas cards. I don't care if they're late. I'm only sending 8-10 & only have old stamps that my late mother bought as collectors items. I don't think they're worth much more than 32 cents each. I'm going to use two at a time & have to see what others are up in my old desk,.
I will not read here again until I have them ready to mail. Good Morning! Posted by: Carol at December 23, 2014 05:33 AM (sj3Ax) 627

Good Morning Carol!
I sent all of two dead-trees cards this year, and handed out three in person. Just not motivated this year. Posted by: All Hail Eris at December 23, 2014 05:42 AM (KH1sk) 629
Slight correction re the girl demanding free cloakroom space so she doesn't freeze to death: this wasn't published in the Guardian but The Spectator.
This is relevant because this used to be a decent conservative magazine, whereas at least 50% of it is now this kind of shite. I still subscribe, but the day is coming when I no longer will. Posted by: English Dan at December 23, 2014 06:04 AM (PBdEm) 630
If Ann-Margeret can't save Tommy no one can. That's sensory overload right there, just ask Elvis.

Good Morning, All Hail Eris,
I sent 11 in total. I also ran out of stamps. I used five 10 cent stamps on last one. Posted by: Carol at December 23, 2014 07:28 AM (sj3Ax) 634
Hitchens is a professional iconoclast. The more people agree he's right, the more he needs new material. Telling people that Russia is really the good guy should keep him "edgy" for years.
I do not recall that the EU had a private militia inside Ukraine that went around putting guns to the heads of sailors and priests and cops and firemen and doctors and mayors and marching them in shame parades before locking them up for the crime of wanting to do their jobs without regard to who wins elections. Russia does. Posted by: chris_balsz at December 23, 2014 12:03 PM (kTWS+) 635
