Overnight Open Thread (12-7-2014) - Inglorious Edition

Quote of the Day I - Future Journalists of America Edition

"Ultimately, though, from where I sit in Charlottesville, to let fact checking define the narrative would be a huge mistake."

-Julia Horowitz, "assistant managing editor at The Cavalier Daily, the University of Virginia's student newspaper," writing in the Politico, in a piece titled "Why We Believed Jackie's Rape Story."

Quote of the Day II

It really does astound me that the national Democratic apparatus apparently thought that they could defecate on an entire section of the country for fifty years and still get that section to vote for them at the end of it.  What did they think Southerners are, hard Left progressives or something? Folks below the Mason-Dixon line have basic self-respect and dignity, is what I'm saying. Try to heap scorn on their heads, and they'll vote with their feet.

-- Moe Lane in Democrats still confused as to why the South has given up on them.

Sabrina Erdely seems to have a history when it comes to questionable rape stories. Before the UVA rape story she wrote about two other rape case articles for Rolling Stone. One from 2011 fell apart when the (male) accuser's story was investigated and a recent one from late 2013 about the rape of a female sailor has details that seem highly questionable. All of these were written for Rolling Stone so it's not like they can plead ignorance about her journalistic practices.

Rolling Stone Quietly Changes Its Rape Story Apology

"A note that initially said the magazine "misplaced" its trust in an alleged gang rape victim was edited Saturday to say the 'mistakes are on Rolling Stone.'"

As Insty notes this is something you might do when you think you may have to defend against a libel suit and need the help of your source. Also by expressing skepticism about Jackie's story at any point Rolling Stone is now a rape apologist.

Volokh on Libel law and the Rolling Stone /UVA Alleged Gang Rape Story

Normally the members of Phi Kappa Psi would have a hard time making a successful libel claim against RS and Jackie but given the explicit claims about rape being a initiation ritual of the fraternity (and hence implying that all the members are gang rapists) and the journalistic malpractice of Rolling Stone, that probably is no longer the case.

Gawker-Trained New Republic Editor Won't Even Print Next Issue

Well I'm not in the publishing world but how can they not have a back-up issue made up of ever-green stories and best-of compilation already in the can and ready to go? Don't they have contractual obligations to advertisers?

But maybe things are so effed up that the new management doesn't even know where these files are kept.

Ebola Czar Ron Klain Returning to Private Sector in 2015

So two months of czaring has resulted in what exactly?

Did the Kennedy Administration Try to Drive Reagan Off the Air?

[A] few months after [subpoenaing Reagan before a grand jury], Kennedy tried to get him fired from General Electric Theater. Or, at least, that's what Reagan believed. "Dad told us he had just lost his job with GE," Reed recalls Reagan son Michael Reagan telling him. "He said [GE President] Ralph Cordiner had called him earlier to report that he [Cordiner] had been contacted by Bobby Kennedy, who had said: 'If you want government contracts, get Reagan off the air.'"

Reagan got a bit of revenge when he debated (and by consensus destroyed) RFK in this debate on Vietnam in 1967

Reagan wiped the floor with Bobby Kennedy. If Kennedy hadn't been shot, Nixon might not have gotten enough support for a first round vote at the '68 RNC. In that case, Reagan could have gotten the nod in '68.

I was very surprised at his performance during that debate. It caused me to stop seeing him as an actor and start seeing him as a viable politician who knew what he was talking about.

58 Got back from a few days of hunting, just North of Lake Livingston, TX.

Saw some good deer, but no scrub bucks or spikes. Nary a doe. Did see a large family of hogs on, crossing the road which leads to the blind.... at 320 yards, and on a dead-run to clear the open space.

If one of 'em had stopped, just once, even for a couple seconds....... ah well, I do get to go back in #twoweeks.

Good thing though, is that quite a few dads out on the lease had their kids with 'em. Two sons. About eleven daughters.

Those Texas dads are sure raising up one hell of a next generation. I was among some of the best that Texas has to offer, and it made me proud and humble to be included in their midst.

65 On earlier threads I was sharing some excerpts from my dad's WWII diary. Here's one more, from late May '44, after the break out from the stalemate at the Anzio beachhead during the race to Rome.

May 29

Goodhan took me flying today. A "message to Garcia" sort of thing. A Lt of the 91 Recon was out on the point of II Corp advance and didn't know the situation. So he radioed for some help. Army turned the problem over to the Arty section and we sent Goodhan out to look. He buzzed a few towns trying to find out who owned them till he finally saw a jeep parked in Norma, a little town built right on the top of a 1000' sheer cliff. He found a cow pasture up there and landed (not an easy job). Sure enough - there was his Lt - with 2 or 3 men, and they were all between Norma and the Germans. Goodhan promised him a situation map and came back to the CP to get one. I went back with him on the second trip. As we circled the town to land the Italians started pouring out into the field. By the time we stopped rolling at least a couple hundred were gathered around shaking hands and raising a fuss in general.

We broke out a carton of cigarettes and had a great time giving them away. On the way back we toured the front lines - saw a lot of 3d Div doughboys moving up and quite a number of our tanks maneuvering.

75 I dunno exactly who walked off at TNR, but having stories in your hands is only the beginning. They need to be edited, copy edited, laid out, illustrated, etc. Photos have to be selected, and the shooters paid off and credited. Ads need to be confirmed and placed. Then there's the last-minute shuffle of pages so everyone's happy. And nothing goes to press without the big boss signing off, and said big boss almost invariably decides the whole thing needs to change to meet his/her whims.

The stories themselves are maybe 10 percent of putting a magazine together.

I got good at it just in time for print to die.

I first visited Durango in 1992 (with my wife and friends), and saw it as a touristy Western town. Had a beer with a friend in an old style saloon.
Visited in 2011 and couldn't quite believe the change. Full of transplanted Californians, I guess. Not really a Colorado town anymore.

Everywhere they go, they seem to make everything the same as suburban California. Bleah.

Vegas gets most of its water from Lake Mead and the lake's level has been dropping... in large part because state upriver are grabbing more.

They are building a new water pipe that is at a lower level just in case the lake's level gets too low.

As for drinking water, the water from the tap is horrid. It is very hard and a bit slimy. I only drink bottled water.

Of course, unlike with California, the state of Nevada isn't going out of its way to turn fertile lands into a desert...

A modification of the plan that Republicans had in California during the '60's. They'd put the bulk of their money in defending the five most vulnerable on their side and in defeating the five most vulnerable on the other side.

Calling the pagan nature worshippers is no good, they think nature should be worshipped, and pagan sounds cool to them.

Even nature and earth cult isn't that great since they don't mind that either, though the cult word might sting a bit.

Dirt worship, rock worship? Trying to think of something stupid and inanimate since most of the earth is molten rock.

They've done a good job of embracing "tree-hugger" -- "of course I love trees, we all should!"

175 With ice fishing, it ain't about the fish.

We sold our old popup camper to a guy who was going to remove the tent part and the slides and put plywood all around, instant fish shanty with wheels, propane tank, heater and stove, plus comfy seats and a nice adjustable table. Could even sleep in the darned thing if push came to shove. I think with a generator he could easily have electric power, or even run it off of marine batteries.

So, even without the fish, it was gonna be a good time.

That's what I did.

Honestly though Boehner is not going to lose in the general election. And he knows it too. He only ever does the most basic of campaign ads for the general. This is the first time he ever went all out, and it wasn't for the general it was for the primary. And with his all out campaigning he still lost 10% of the support he usually has.

To beat him would require a real candidate, with money and the willingness to campaign and challenge him.

206 My latest:

http://pjmedia.com/zombie/2014/12/07/mass-rapes-at-u-c-berkeley/?singlepage=true

"Mass Rapes at UC Berkeley?

Multiple bizarre “frat rape” allegations erupt at Cal in wake of new “Yes Means Yes” law

Just days after a new California law redefining rape came into effect, several shocking but unsubstantiated rape allegations have been leveled against fraternities on the UC Berkeley campus.

One stunning university police report cites accusations of a mass rape at the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, where not just one but five victims were supposedly drugged and raped on the same night at the frat house near campus.

In another allegation, a specific perpetrator was named, arrested, and shamed publicly — only to be later declared “factually innocent” as the rape charge was quietly dropped, after his reputation was ruined.

Suspiciously, in most of the cases the charges were not made by victims or witnesses, but rather by third parties long after the fact. These third-party accusations were made either anonymously or by “Campus Security Authorities,” which includes campus political activist groups. In many of the cases, the actual “victims” themselves have not come forward and may not even consider themselves to have been raped.

And even more suspiciously, almost none of the supposed crimes were reported directly to Berkeley’s municipal police force, whose jurisdiction covers campus as well, but instead only to the university police, who are required by recent regulations to log and publicize each accusation.

In not a single case have any of the charges been substantiated, nor have any suspects been indentified or arrested (aside from the one case noted above where the charge was subsequently dropped)."

...etc.

217 I was watching Fox this morning when they did an interview with Rush. One of the points brought up during the interview was about Garner, and Rush said that the fact that he was being arrested for selling "loosies" was absurd. My thought on that was that it needs to be pointed out, repeatedly, that the people that are protesting the most were the very people that voted for those same programs. The LIB's vote for people that will do the most to restrict a behavior that they find objectionable because it doesn't fit with their particular worldview. Then, when someone runs afoul of that law and dies, it's suddenly the law enforcement community is picking on the perpetrator.
Sorry folks. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You are the ones that voted those people in to do your bidding. When they comply, and do what you ask, you must also be responsible for the outcomes.

Ah, I didn't read the last thread. Thx!

What makes me scratch my head more than anything is that the Left has spent 40 years sexualizing kids and teens into being promiscuous (so as to destroy the nuclear family), and now suddenly they're scapegoating and destroying anyone who tries to live the "free love" lifestyle.

WTF?

You glorify drugs, you glorify loveless sex -- and now you throw into jail anyone who tries to hook up with a girl after getting intoxicated?

The Left has lost control of its "narrative" -- nothing makes sense anymore. It's self-contradictory. The consequence is that people will reject the left's "message" en masse, because there is no sensible message remaining anymore.

IIRC, his problem (and the problem his female protagonist) had in those novels was simply, the herculean task of bringing 'real justice' back into the Swedish judicial system, i.e. true lifetime sentences. I've heard that Larsson supposedly even seems a bit pro-DP in those novels, but I doubt he ever was or would have been given his background.

245 To repost Constanza's excellent comment from last thread, which explains things quite succinctly:

"250 Zombie's piece shows how the system is rigged.
Jan 1 -Sept 27, zero reports of sexual assaults at Berkeley frats.
Sept. 28, Cali's new Yes Means Yes law goes into effect.
An explosion of rape and sex assaults since then.

How?
Cali law allows 3rd parties to report rapes.
Cali law requires campus police to publicly report the rape charge.

So now the activists will have their data "proving" the epidemic of rape.

Rape activists are going to frat parties, seeing a dude and chick kissing while holding beers, and reporting it as rape to the cops.

252 The one part that I think is too naive is "Rape activists are going to frat parties, seeing a dude and chick kissing while holding beers, and reporting it as rape to the cops. "

The rape activists don't even go to the parties. They just hear about how a girl was getting drunk at a frat party three days earlier, and they casually just anonymously call in another case of rape at a frat. It's that easy. The cops are REQUIRED to reprint the allegations verbatim in publicly disseminated police reports.

The hilarious part is that the police reports themselves are also now required to have TRIGGER WARNINGS!

http://police.berkeley.edu/crimealerts/2014/14-101514-70.html

"Please note this message may contain information that some may find upsetting."

Every police report also must contain information on how not to get raped.

Related, from Jonah Golberg:

Of course, the problem is that feminists want to expunge any notion that women are gentler and fairer. This requires declaring war on chivalric standards for male conduct, which were once a great bulwark against caddish and rapacious behavior. Take away the notion that men should be protective of women and they will -- surprise! -- be less protective of women.

None of this means we’d all be better off with women in corsets on fainting couches. (I like strong, assertive women so much I married one. I’m also the son of one, and I’m trying to raise another.) But somehow feminists have gotten themselves into the position of adopting the adolescent male’s fantasy of consequence-and-obligation-free sex as an ideal for women. Uncivilized and morally uneducated men have, for millennia, wanted to treat women like sluts. And now feminists have embraced the word as a badge of honor. Call me an old-fogey, but I think that’s weird.

256 As for AGW, I like to tell a little story. When Einstein was presenting his Theory of Relativity to the Austrian Physical Society after the end of WWI, he suddenly realized that his math was wrong. One other person in the audience, an Austrian mathematician, also spotted the error. The race was on to see who would correct the math first, Einstein or the Austrian mathematician. Einstein won, but just barely. To this day, if the Austrian had come in first, it would have been his theory of relativity, not Einstein's. Additionally, Einstein put all of his work out into the world to be proved or disproved, and it took more than a decade to prove him right.
Fast forward to 2004. Phil Jones, lead researcher and lead AGW proponent at East Anglia University was given a FOIA request to divulge his data. Keep in mind that he worked for a publicly funded university. He refused. A second request was submitted for his data, and again he refused. He was taken to court with a third FOIA request and the court ordered him to turn over his data. Phil Jones then destroyed all of his data rather than comply with the court order saying that "I will not allow them to use my research against me."
This is one of many reasons that I cannot believe the global warmists. If you cannot prove your data, then it is false. Period. End of discussion.

257 If a dude and a chick both have BACs of .1 -- legally intoxicated in most (all?) states -- and then have sex, the Left wants to say the man is guilty of rape. It's madness. Drunken sex is not rape.

Again, .1 BAC of both man and woman. Meet at a party. Go outside to make out, she blows him in the bushes.

This is not rape. This is maybe a stupid decision.

That said I know two couples with kids that I know for a fact started as a drunken hook-up. They were both drunk, saw each other, and were, like, ur hot, no ur hot, nom, nom, nom.

Interestingly, ne of the rape claims at Berkeley is that one fraternity brother claims he was "sexually assaulted" by another fraternity brother. "And there may have been others," says the report.

I strongly suspect this "report" was just the frat boys having some sarcastic fun at the cops' expense, pointing out the complete absurdity of the new legal structure -- even if two guys get drunk and one says "Go fuck yourself!" then he just committed rape against the other.

The way to destroy this law in one blow is for the BOY in a drunken hookup to accuse the GIRL of raping him. Gender equality!

Case thrown out of court, all future cases dropped preemptively.

Look at the authorized biographies of any feminist activist icon, and you'll see that the two common traits are possession of a vagina and freely acknowledged serious mental health problems.

316 Yeah, the nonstop rapists of Berkeley are taking a break from their 24-hour-a-day rape spree to loot a few Radio Shacks and Trader Joe's again.

But after the looting, its back to the raping. 'Cause that's how we roll in Berkeley.

A report is being released tomorrow by Senator Diane Feinstein detailing prisoner abuses under the Bush administration.
It will inflame the head choppers.

Tibetans commonly bow and recite the incantation "bunga na wholla jhana" before commencing the rape festivities. Translation is either "I apologize for raping you" or "surrender your bunghole, foreign devil", depending on regional dialect.

321 I'm fascinated to see if twitter bans the GotNews guy, Johnson.
He's been suspended 3 times. The Left really wants him banned. HuffPo is doing a piece on him tomorrow - the piece is about how right wing scum are evading Twitter terms of service and doxxing rape victims (ie the rape hoax girl).

Twitter's very important for a media organization. Getting banned from it is a huge blow to any media biz.

The Left really wants him banned -- and much of the Right, too. He's an abrasive dude.

prophet, I've read Stieg Larsson was actually a big-time socialist.

IIRC, his problem (and the problem his female protagonist) had in
those novels was simply, the herculean task of bringing 'real justice'
back into the Swedish judicial system, i.e. true lifetime sentences.
I've heard that Larsson supposedly even seems a bit pro-DP in those
novels, but I doubt he ever was or would have been given his background.

Qdpsteve agreed. I definitely got that feeling from the Larsson books. That is why I mentioned Lilyhammer. An American (mobster) in kind of similar situations in Sweden. Some of its pretty funny and it touches on Swedens social situation ever more so than the GWTDT does.

That was my question.

If I pay for an advertisement in 20 issues a year for 3 years... and you start putting out 10 issues a year; I'm expecting some money back.

And given how TNR is doing, that's likely money you don't have to pay me.

350 When they loot a Radio Shack, what do they take? RC toys? What does RS even have nowadays?

Not like the old days when looters could go into RS and loot enough electronics to build a home computer. We had much better looters back on the day.

356 For the last week, nearly every day white UC Berkeley students have been marching in circles around campus holding up signs saying "BLACK LIVES MATTER."

Then this happened:

http://police.berkeley.edu/crimealerts/2014/14-121514-92.html

BLACH THEFTS MATTER

"On the evening of Monday, December 15, 2014 UCPD received a report of a cell phone robbery and several cell phone thefts.

At 6:40 p.m. a female student was on the Grinnell Pathway when she was approached from behind by a black male suspect who grabbed her cell phone and ran off. At 6:23 p.m. a non-affiliated male was walking near the West Crescent when he was approached by three black male juveniles who robbed him of his cell phone. The suspects, all in hooded sweatshirts, fled the scene towards Center & Oxford. A female student was walking through Sproul Plaza at approximately 6:36 p.m. talking on her cell phone when a male suspect, ethnicity unknown, snatched her phone out of her hand. Finally, at 6:42 p.m. a female student was in front of the Moffitt Library Cafe texting on her phone. A male suspect approached her and grabbed her phone. The suspect fled the scene running westbound towards the Eucalyptus Grove. UCPD officers on patrol saw the victim chasing the suspect. The officers intervened and arrested the suspect.

The suspect arrested is:

A Black male, 17 years of age, 6'0" in height, with a medium build, wearing a dark knit hat, gray jacket and gray pants. It is unknown whether this suspect was involved in the other incidents.
