Overnight Open Thread (9 Nov 2013)

Barack Obama has been Gaslighting the American people. No shit.

Think of it this way: We’re all living out the movie Gaslight, with Obama as the dangerously manipulative, dishonest Charles Boyer character, and the American public as the hapless, helpless Ingrid Bergman character, whom Boyer is trying to drive mad so that he can take her wealth. (Which raises the question whether Ted Cruz is the Joseph Cotten character who rides to the rescue….)

Even thought I’m right about something depressing, I’m human enough to take some pleasure in having been right in the first place. So, forgive me for analyzing Obama’s latest lies, and his lie about those lies, using a post I wrote five-and-a-half years ago, when I first realized he was using the narcissist’s classic approach to lying and manipulation.

Nerf Guns

Good God. These idiots actually believe people can't tell the difference between a Nerf gun and an actual gun. Um, bright yellow and orange colors is your first clue it is a Nerf gun (unless you painted over it which isn't recommended). But then again, being a university campus, these are well known hotbeds of LIVs so one can understand how they won't be able to tell.

I'm gonna have to make this though. The DIY Nerf Vulcan Sentry Gun. Man this would be awesome for office war games.

Lone Survivor Trailer

This trailer is much better than the first one for this movie.

Cell Phone Fees

Obamacare wasn't the first program that requires people to pay for other people to get free things. Just look at your cell phone bill. Yup, you're paying for OPhones.

One carrier executive, Gary Carter, manager of national partnerships for Assurance Wireless, apparently already considers free phones a civil right, or something close to it. A blogger for the New York Post quoted him as saying, “The program is about peace of mind. It’s one less bill that someone has to pay, so they can pay their rent or for day care. … It is a right to have peace of mind.”

Since each income–based entitlement can serve as a gateway to other related programs—getting on the burgeoning food stamp program triggers qualification for a free phone—each new benefit can be seen as “earned” by participation in a previous one. The deeper problem, Weissberg says, is that behind the benevolence, today’s federal help profoundly differs from the past interventions, breeding ingrained dependency and infantilizing the people it wants to help.

The Last 10 Years of Spying

Spying and espionage over the last 10 years in one infographic.

Awesome Arrest Video

Meet chess master Paul Charles Dozsa. Evidently he is known for not paying his restaurant bills. He should be thankful he wasn't arrested in New Mexico.

Glow In The Dark Food

Glow in the dark ice cream. OK, what food would you make glow in the dark. I'm thinking bacon.

24 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Strikes Down Obamacare Contraceptive Mandate

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against the Obamacare contraceptive mandate and being an undue burden on religious freedom: “We hold that the plaintiffs — the business owners and their companies — may challenge the mandate. We further hold that compelling them to cover those services substantially burdens their religious-exercise rights. Under RFRA the government must justify the burden under the standard of strict scrutiny. So far it has not done so, and we doubt that it can.”

26 Repost from end of dead thread - great timing I seem to have:

408 Idea for a future aoshq blog post:

What major household repairs/improvements and actual real health care procedures do you anticipate NOT being able to do because of Obamacare (a/k/a the Unaffordable Uncaring Act passed with NO GOP votes)?

AND what do you think the negative effects will/might be on your family and on the economy?

A starter list based on what I've been hearing and reading:

Roof repair/replacement

Driveway repair/replacement

Car repair/replacement

Plumbing repair/replacement

HVAC repair/replacement

Braces for kids

Dental surgery, cap, crown, implant

So-called elective surgery (like knee, hip, back, foot)

Big Tree trim/removal

Fence repair/replacement

36 I think this bears repeating. A white, republican, anti-gay candidate won an election in Houston in a black democratic district held by a 24 year incumbent because the LIV's thought he was black too. The only one complaining is the corrupt loser. It's a local story because it just proves how uninformed voters are and that black voters vote primarily based on skin color, period.

Since I'm the "persistent" (bossy) one, I've been appointed to hang around the various government offices to deal with this stuff. Yay.

121 In the UFC, it takes a while to build up a name. Many years.

But often once the fighters get famous enough and have enough fans and name recognition to start making some serious money, their body starts failing and their testosterone levels start dropping.

Of course, for many of them their testosterone starts dropping earlier than regular men because they abused steroids to get to the UFC in the first place.

Regardless, UFC is in the position that a large # of their most bankable stars are 30-something dudes who have to take TRT to compete.

There's also some interesting medical data suggesting that head trauma can actually cause lower testosterone. I don't completely understand the mechanism.

124 @102

But the problem was he didn't set him straight.

He didn't tell him why it was necessary to shut down the government, about how awful Obamacare is, how we are so far in the hole we are in all likelyhood never going to able to recover.

In other words he was in front of a group and a moderator he could have informed and instead he whiffed.

Unfortunate.

Posted by: Kreplach at November 09, 2013 10:54 PM (dwtaK)

125 Also keep in mind that there is a Social Service Industrial complex out there that makes a lot of money servicing "clients" of the welfare state.

Why do you think so many Insurance companies, medical providers, drug companies, Walmart, JP Morgan and other banks, SSEU and Other Social Worker Unions, Phone companies, Landlords (big and small), mom and pop grocery stores, 7-11, the list goes on were all for Obama and what he SAID he would do? Because they saw dollar signs and figured they might as well be the ones to take the money.

All these companies/organizations make money off the benefits provided to the Welfare client.

Only now they're finding out that they were on the alligator's menu also.

Many are now realizing that they're not going to be eaten last and now are squawking about how much it hurts. (sort of like all the middle class Democrats that voted for Obama and thought Obamacare was a good idea and now are getting screwed).

So don't just point the finger of blame at those getting the benefits because the estimate is that about 40% or so or more of the money set aside for welfare is used to deliver the services given.

And they're your neighbors and maybe even yourself who are engaged in this activity.

This is why we can probably never go back (unless there's a natural cataclysm or war) because there's no way to just drop everything without too many who have too much political clout being affected.

Welcome to the New World Order.

152 A husband and wife are traveling by car from Atlanta to New York. After almost twenty-four hours on the road, they decide to stop at a nice hotel and take a room. They only plan to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road. When they check out four hours later, the desk clerk hands them a bill for $350. The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He tells the clerk although it's a nice hotel, the rooms certainly aren't worth $350. When the clerk explains that $350 is the standard rate, the man insists
on speaking to the manager.

The manager enters the conversation and explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which were available for the husband and wife to use.
He also explains that they could have taken in one of the shows which the hotel is famous for. "The best entertainers from New York, Hollywood and Las Vegas perform here,"
explains the manager.

No matter what facility the manager mentions, the man replies, "But we didn't use it!"

The manager is unmoved. Eventually the man gives up and agrees to pay. He writes a check and hands it to the manager. "But sir," the managers says, "this check is only made out for $100."

"That's right," replies the man. "I charged you $250 for sleeping with my wife."

"What! I didn't sleep with your wife!" exclaims the manager.

"Well," the man replies, "she was here, and you could have."

Actually, it has to be a black Democrat. In my town, our local diversity experts (whose slate of stealth Dems just got shellacked in the elections) are basically telling us that unless we vote the big black D, we'uns are just racists. The Republican black guy voted in over a decade ago to office after office was just doing what his white masters told him, after all. Doesn't count.

The county will be like this too, soon. Will take twenty years to work out. I have zero intentions of sticking around for the ride while it does. Life is too short, so I'll be looking for the final homeport somewhere else, where I won't have to worry about having my character attacked just because I won't vote to allow someone to build a local Democratic machine, one more interested in winning state and federal races than managing local affairs.

That was the media's biggest myth creation.

When he was assassinated it struck at the heart of the Democrat/Liberal Heart. It's what inspired thousands to become PR flacks/Ad men and so called journalists; "to make a difference".

It was the beginning of the Media being the story or creating the story instead of reporting the story.

They discovered their power and they never looked back.

Well except for a thousand JFK/Camelot retrospectives.

They especially want to believe that JFK would've pulled us out of Viet Nam (not true imo) and that whole sad affair wouldn't have happened. And thus Nixon would never have won.

So to Liberals, it was a pivotal moment and the country seemed to changed radically after that.

They forget that it was JFK that upped the American presence in Viet Nam and just signed off on the assassination of Diem. So maybe he was more engaged there than they think.

Plus without Nixon there wouldn't be a Hillary or Woodward and Bernstein or any of the other gotch journalism that went on for too long.

Now they don't even bother to play gotcha with the GOP, they just outright make false accusations and other assorted lies.

168 First one (2 months ago) is a mix lab and retriever. She is a year old and literally running me ragged. We go at least 25 miles a week and she still is wanting to play all the time. I keep thinking if she has a buddy it will let me have a little break. I love her to death and the rest of the family does too (the just don't have to get off work and take her out!) I am just looking for a good companion for her so my options are up to what is at the shelter.

174 Drinking mescal tonight.

4 kinds.

From high dollar to, uh, middle dollar.

I'm beginning to think the expensive Del Maguey stuff is hipster juice. Reputation not justified by overall taste. Smoke smothers everything.

Whereas, surprisingly something like, Toby Keith's "Wild Shot" is a damn good quaff.

Great agave nose, nice agave taste with smoke coming forward, sweetness, very smooth. Nice long lingering aftertaste with sweet smoke.

Mixes well. makes a great margarita.

Delerio Reposado is pretty nice as well.

181 Its hard to bring home decent scotch cheap. You might be better off at a lower price point with Powers or Bushmills Irish Whiskey. I like the 12y Jameson's but that's starting to get spendy. There used to be a bunch of good American Rye whiskeys that were cheap - but then they got cool and are priced accordingly.

If your gonna be mixing it with lots of stuff, you might as well get a Canadian and go for quantity over quality.

I saw Thor a few hours ago. It's worth the money ($10.00).

Lots of action, plenty of special effects/CGI (and the suspension of disbelief is not affected).

No obvious political bent, although the (severely evil) baddies do seem to use leftist values and dialog.

Loki has good dialogue writers ... and Stan Lee asks for his shoe back.

The movie does continue, briefly, after the ending "credits".

A couple of plot twists are unexpected, and, in the reality of current movies, refreshing

The only thing that bothers me is the lack of action by other superheroes. Earth is attacked, and ... where is Tony Stark? The Hulk? The Fantastic Four? How about Doctor Strange?

For this level of threat, I figure Dr. Doom would power up and get involved ...

Roof repair/replacement

Trimmed the list down for space.

Hell, dishwasher, fridge, furnace, water softener, roof, couch, and mattress are all reaching the end of their lifespans. My stove is kind of a piece of crap, the microwave has taken a beating. It'd be nice to upgrade my TV to a flat panel. Carpet is beat up and could use replacing. Windows are pretty inefficient and could likewise use replacing. It's a good thing I like it cold in here. Actually I'd like a whole new house, but that's not going to happen any time soon. I have friends who have new houses but I'm pretty sure none of them are saving for retirement. I'm going without cable and other sundries trying to keep going despite saving a lousy 10%. What is it AlextheChick says about trying to do the right thing and feeling like a chump?

"Five dollars for both of them," the salesman said.
"Yeah right, you've got to be kidding me!" the man replied sarcastically.
"No, that's the price," the salesman said, "Do you want to buy them or not?"
"Yeah, I'll take them!" the customer responded.

He continued to look around and saw a car stereo system with a detachable face cassette player, a CD changer, amplifier, speakers, and subwoofers. "How much?" he asked.

"Five dollars for the system," the salesman answered.
"Is it stolen?" the guy asks.
"No," said the salesman, "It's brand new, do you want it or not?"
"Sure," the customer replied. He looked around some more.

Next he found a top of the line computer with printer and monitor. "How much?"
"Five dollars," was the familiar response.
"I'll take that too!" the man said.

As the salesperson is ringing up the purchases, the man asked him,
"Why are your prices so cheap?"

The salesman said, "Well, the owner of the store is at my house right now with my wife.
What he's doing to her, I'm doing to his business!"

Hang in there with the energy.
There was a tv show with a trainer helping a family deal with 2 1 year old retrievers. She put them on a strict schedule of exercising the dogs. One parent took the dog out for a long walk before work. The kids played in the yard with the dog after school. The other parent took the dog out for a long walk in the evening.

240 Hehe. Gingy and I were watching American Top Gear and Rutledge Wood managed to just hammer both of our hot buttons in one sentence. He was talking about the Tesla Model S: (paraphrased) "There's nothing dorky about the $10K tax rebates for each vehicle(Me: "FUCK YOU! WHY SHOULD I SUBSIDIZE SOME RICH ASSHOLE'S $90K ELECTRIC VANITY VEHICLE!!?"), and it's kinda cool if you save a polar bear's life (Gingy: "FUCK YOU! GODDAMN APEX PREDATORS THAT WILL TRAVEL 20 MILES ACROSS A SHEET OF ICE TO EAT YOUR FACE!!"*). That's quite an accomplishment.

*Gingy lived in the Arctic. Not only are polar bears to be feared instead of cuddled, she knows that their population is larger than ever now, bullshit AGW propaganda notwithstanding.

254 Like so much conventional wisdom, that impression has proved dead wrong. In fact, Obama’s resolute solitude—his isolation and alienation from the other players and power centers of Washington, be they rivals or friends—has emerged as the defining trait of his time in office. 277 Sup hoard. I hope tonight is the end of a shitty week/month.

First weekend of October stepdad and father in law both go in the hospital, same night, same floor. Father in law gets released 36 hours later with a clean bill of health, but stepdad has internal bleeding that has been going on for about 6 months. His 4th endoscopy of the year finds some places that are causing the bleeding, so they cauterize the blood vessels. He starts having a lot of pain, and it's not going away no matter what. So the next day they run some CATSCANs and find that his colon has a whole in it. Emergency surgery that night, about a foot of his colon is removed, but the doctor is confident that this will finally fix his bleeding.

Did I mention that he is/was on blood thinners because he has a problem with blood clots? Well, they had to take him off of those because of the bleeding and the surgery. Doctors said if he didn't get back on blood thinners, it wasn't a matter of if but when he would have a stroke. 8 days after the surgery, he is doing much better, and was just starting to get back onto some solid foods and starting to begin some physical therapy. It was going to take a few month of rehab to get his strength back, but he is looking the best he had in months. He and my mom are talking, and he starts talking gibberish, she runs out to get the nurses, and they take him to surgery because he is having a stroke. He comes through the surgery, and they got most of the clot, but it was massive.

Did I mention that my sister had called his children the morning he had the emergency stomach surgery telling them that he wasn't doing well and they needed to get their asses here to see him? Did I mention that his kids responded by saying that we didn't need to help him that he could hire a nurse to help him? Oh, sorry, that's what they did. Finally after his massive stroke, 2 of his kids finally come to town to see him, but it's too late for him to know that they were here, and another kid took another week and a half to get here, and one didn't even bother coming. 2 weeks after the stroke, this past monday, my stepfather went to be with the Lord.

At the funeral yesterday, his kids were all doing their rememberances of him as things that happened 30-40 years ago. When I did my remembrance, it was of the last 20 years. They had almost no contact with him the last 25 years, but they were the ones acting like they knew the man. The next few months should be a real hoot as they fight over his estate, but I made sure that I got his most prized possession, his dog. If they knew their father, they would have known that his dog was the thing he loved the most in this world, but they didn't.

Please don't feel sorry for him because I know he is in a much better place. He was definitely a man who earned eternal life through his faith, and the last few years saw him in tremendous physical pain. He is at peace now, reunited with his brother and sisters, mother and father, and his first wife. Plus he is with his previous dogs, so he is in a much better place.

Another good one is the silly laser pointer -- both of them (cat and dog) love chasing that red dot around. Have to put the dog in the crate for a while to let the cat play by himself and then put the cat in the crate to let the dog have his turn. The two of them can go for hours with that silly thing.

It is, and he was a fascinating guy. He worked for the CIA right after he got out of the Army and college, but in the 30+ years I knew him he still wouldn't tell me about anything that he did in the CIA. I figured out he must have been a "double naught" spy.

Sad that his kids saw him as an ATM machine instead of a man of considerable talents and knowledge and life experiences.

Thanks guys for all the thoughts and prayers, but his many years of witnessing his faith and teaching men about the path to eternal salvation earned him his eternal life. Knowing this, and that he is no longer is in pain is actually a comfort to us.

330 Was going through the ToysRUs catalogue today and saw thenerf bows!!! Can I be the evilone who equips everyone with those for x-mas? Really look like a lot of fun -- maybe I can set up a target in the back yard for myself and my overgrown kids as well. They even have pink ones! Heavens-to-Betsy I want those toys and I'll be in deep do-do if I supply all kids in my acquaintance, but they sure look like fun.

331 You got your answer Dave. And the hypocrisy is breathtaking. When the STHF where will you head? South. Like everybody else. And we don't want you. Because yall will never face the truth.

333 Well I am at 10,209 words on NaNoWriMo. Only 4,791 words behind where I should be for today. But I wrote a total of 2,904 words today.

And for the amusement of others, a bit of doggerel that has no connection to what I am writing. What will your imagination do with this?

So upon the couch and under the stairs whilst the werewolf howled at the moon.

338 If a Nerf bow is held sideways would it count as a crossbow? Oh, forget it. Don't bother answering that question. I thought there was a way to find common playground in the longbow/crossbow debate but the question is pointless. Doing a little checking I found that Nerf makes a crossbow. Nerf has done nothing to settle this issue. Why can't they be a uniter instead of a divider?

339 Wendy Davis is not likely to be on AoS. Do you have a point, or are you just determined to scrap with those on your side in some kind of contest over ideological and geographic dick size?

Oh yeah. The high school son seems to try to eat his weight every day, and he's skinny. The college daughter doesn't eat a lot, but she REQUIRES chocolate for her monthly binge. To keep the peace I keep a cache of Kit Kat, Twix, and 100 Grand. There's also a bag of sour gummies for the occasional odd craving.

346 Lord Byron's "THE DESTRUCTION OF SENNACHERIB"

THE Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea,
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

Like the leaves of the forest when Summer is green,
That host with their banners at sunset were seen:
Like the leaves of the forest when Autumn hath blown,
That host on the morrow lay withered and strown.

For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed;
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,
But through it there rolled not the breath of his pride;
And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,
And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf.

And there lay the rider distorted and pale,
With the dew on his brow, and the rust on his mail:
And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,
The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.

And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,
And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;
And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!

356 Just catching up on the news of the day. I think Vic had this story Sat am but just got around to it... John Kerry doesn't think Oswald was lone shooter because of his communist sympathizer ties. Does Kerry not see the irony? Kerry works for a communist for Pete's sake.

Morning everyone. I managed to briefly connect long enough to get a peek of the GOCE satellite. Altitude was 91 miles, about a fifteen mile difference from the same point in it's orbit 24 hours ago.

366 In addition to your cell phone bill, your utility bills at least in CA also have taxes so that poor people can have low cost energy. Then, they go out hustling to find those poor. Maybe they don't need it, with all the other benefits we give them? Just a thought.
