Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Happy Friday! Media Rattled By Coming Layoffs at the NYTStory at Politico, if you want to search for it. The basics are as the headline suggests: Even some senior editors at the Times are rumored to be on the chopping block in an effort to cut costs, and the rest of the media is worried, because the Times already slashed staff in 2009 and so was thought to be relatively trim. The Times has already announced up to 30 layoffs, if it couldn't secure that many voluntary separations through buy-outs, but only a few people have taken that offer. So as of January 24th come the involuntary layoffs. The Times says this is all perfectly normal. But sources at the paper, who spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity, said this time feels different. “Whatever sense of invincibility that Times employees still feel after the earlier rounds of cuts is being chipped away in this round,” said one Times guild member, who is not affected by the latest round of cuts.I didn't see an explanation as to why the NYT's layoffs rattle "the media," as Politico's headline has it, but I suppose it's a matter of the Times being the canary in the coal mine. And what happens to the Times in January will happen to MSNBC and Politico in August. They shouldn't worry too much about being fired -- after all, this is a vigorous, growing economy with lots of opportunity for work, as they reported throughout the past three years. So I'm very surprised to see them so worried. Oh, btw, LiB. Thanks to @rdbrewer4. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

a vigorous, growing economy with lots of opportunity for work, as they reported throughout the past three years." I'm waiting for the million pound shithammer to come down on payrolls at the _San Francisco Chronicle_, which truly does have to be the single worst lefty moonbat daily in the entire country, bar none. I intend to pose as a hiring headhunter and send these newly unemployed folks all sorts of tantalizing leads for supposedly high-paying new professional gigs. Then meet up with them in person and announce that the job in question involves "Eating out Barack Obama's ass in public, since your resume indicates extensive prior experience with precisely that role". Should be fun! Posted by: torquewrench at January 11, 2013 08:49 PM (gqT4g) 16

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm having a really happy LiBmas. The wife relays occasional comments from libtard friends and acquaintances on Farcebook, which I myself entirely boycott (along with any other Internet or media property run by liberals). Apparently one of said liberals on Failbook is none too happy with the way his job is going. This going-gangbusters Obama economy, for which he was such an avid cheerleader up until Election Day, just isn't bringing in the foot traffic to the business he works at. His commissions are in the toilet, as is his heart. He feels "stuck" right now. Awwwwwww. Poor guy. I'm going to raise a glass tonight to him. I don't normally water down good Scotch, but in this case, I'll adulterate some prized single malt with his tears of unfathomable sadness. More Hidden Obamacare Fun-Next Up, Your Kids’ Braces The Gift that Keeps on Giving. Another happy consequence of Obamacare. Grin and bear it -if you are able to afford the braces, that is. Via Fox Nation: In 2013, the tax increases in Obamacare will increasingly conspire against kitchen-table family healthcare decisions. As just one example, below are some of the taxes that will impact the purchase of dental braces: Obamacare Medical Device Tax: As of Jan.1, Obamacare imposes a new tax of 2.3 percent on medical device manufacturers, including those who make dental braces. The tax is imposed on gross sales — even if the company does not earn a profit in a given year. While the tax will be paid to the IRS by the manufacturer, the tax will be passed along as a higher cost of the product, ultimately to be borne by the parent buying the braces for their child. With the cost of braces being as high as $7,625 this new tax could raise the cost of these braces by $175. And this is only the beginning. So if braces become to expensive, does this mean we will all start to look British again? OK, God I have to participate in the fashion thing, I know right what is it with the damn strapless wedding dresses? Every one of those stupid wedding shows shoves the incredibly overweight women in them and then the hosts gush about how beautiful the woman looks. Umm, no, she looks like the Michelin tire man in the dress actually. Front cleavage OK to a certain extent, back cleavage not so much, and for pete's sake side cleavage is just a tragedy.

NYT layoffs "rattle" the MFM because the NYT is one of their tribal gods. Probably the biggest market outside of NYC for the NYT are academic and media institutions.
John Stossel and Bernard Goldberg have repeatedly described how the fact that the NYT covered a story made it "news" for other media organs, gave the story false credibility, and the NYT *not* covering a story made it "safe" to ignore it. And I've seen that in j-school and local and regional MFM organs (guess which organ I'm thinking of when I type that?). It's like how the notoriously inbred British civil service would feel if Oxford went out of business. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 11, 2013 09:40 PM (bxiXv) 217

I'd been married before (brutal bastard) and was divorced for several years before D'oh and I married. We had a small ceremony (around 80 people) in the chapel of the large ATL church we belonged to. I bought a lovely tea-length dress off a rack on sale in a bridal boutique. Spent around $150 for it. To this day it is timeless and elegant. Long, lace sleeves, a sheer high neck, and pale pink under layer. More people, young and old, complemented me on the dress on our wedding day. Lace sleeves, straight skirt, satin drape behind, and long, detachable train with lace overlay. A little aside, but Beck mentioned yesterday that advertising is absolutely killing all the major networks -- even FOX.He said he tried to get Roger Ailes to do some innovative stuff with commercials, but they're all set in their ways. The major problems are Tivo, everyone blowing by commercials, and the fact that big-name companies advertise on CNN and libtard stations because they're afraid of boycotts from advertising on FOX. Beck's planning a major expansion and is going to offer high-tech production services for smaller companies that still want good-quality commercials. He's going for funny, interesting and continuing-storyline commercials -- in short, ads that will be as good as those on the Super Bowl but on 24/7. I'd bet JP4 will be in the same strain of anti-competence films Hollywood loves. i.e. everyone who is actually trained and competent and prepared gets eaten, and the useless dipshits on the main billing survive, because people in Hollywood don't know about anything but Hollywood and want to fantasize about being able to survive in the real world.

When I made my dress, everything had a big bow on the ass, like I was supposed to be gift-wrapped or some damn thing. Also, huge skirts. I am five feet tall, my husband is six foot six. A huge skirt like that and I would look like a toadstool standing next to him.
On the bright side, my husband's uncle offered to lend me his drywall stilts for the ceremony, just to even things up. I declined, as I preferred the paper NOT to say "The bride lurched down the aisle...." Posted by: tcn at January 11, 2013 10:01 PM (VLG62) 298

So, I occasionally work at a hardcore commie libtard tv station. Buzz around the newsroom the other day was the shock, the SHOCK when their paychecks came in. They were smaller!! How could that happen! ELEVENTY!
With such phenomenal ignorance on display no wonder the journalists are not able to inform the citizenry. People have already worked that out and bankruptcies are the only logical conclusion. Obama is going to have trouble getting funding through congress for government employees let alone bailout money for journalistas. Posted by: Decaf at January 11, 2013 10:21 PM (Kn6sf) 313
Sooth, the movies that Affleck directs are more Right-friendly than most Hollywood dreck. What happens when the nuclear family breaks down? How does the underclass actually live? "Gone Baby Gone". What happens when the Revolution comes? What's Islam in action? "Argo".

Maybe they're all hoping that Obama will create one huge Department of Information - NPR on steroids - and they'll all be able to get jobs there. Think of it! No more icky capitalism and dependence on advertisers! No more worrying about the wingnuts at Fox or the WSJ! No more worries because Uncle Sugar will take care of them all and give them wonderful cushy jobs and dachas just like the Pravda editors had in the good old days of the USSR. All they would have to do is make sure they stick to the government line and kiss Dear Leader's ass - and hell, that's no problem!

"Also, huge skirts" I'm fairly tall for a woman and I hate those big ass skirts too. I remember being a bridesmaid at a friends wedding back in the '80's and all the dresses had poofy skirts. We sat down in the front of the church after the procession up the aisle and our skirts flew up! "I see London, I see France..." Nobody had tried sitting down in the damn things while we were being fitted.
The other thing that made that wedding memorable was that the best man wrote on the bottom of the groom's shoes in black magic marker. It was a Catholic wedding so the bride and groom knelt in front of the altar -and when the groom knelt down, everyone in the first 10 rows or so saw "HELP ME!!!" written on the soles of his feet. They're still married so nobody ever came to his "rescue." Posted by: Donna V. at January 11, 2013 10:41 PM (BStAJ) 317

For example, it seems with all the investigation the NYT has done into rifle magazines, these laid off reporters would be experts on the details of high-capacity magazines and "assault" rifles They would be ideal candidates for a job manufacturing or distributing these high-capacity magazines and firearms to meet the current high demand for these items.
