Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | RIP, Andrew BreitbartAndrew passed away unexpectedly from natural causes shortly after midnight this morning in Los Angeles. We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior. Andrew lived boldly, so that we more timid souls would dare to live freely and fully, and fight for the fragile liberty he showed us how to love.Damn. Update - The best tribute I can think of at the moment: I met Andrew Breitbart in 2005 when I was asked to write for the Huffingtpon Post. He was running the show. Everyone who knew him - left and right - said he was brilliant, eccentric, one of a kind. I instantly fell in love with the guy. To this day, i've never met anyone as fearless. He was my first guest on Redeye, a show I got largely because he told people about me. He became a cheerleader for my work, but more important, a dear close friend I could confide in, about anything. My wife called him the wizard, for he could conjure up anything at any time with limitless energy. He's the only person I know who operated without a safety net. He always knew things would turn out the way they were supposed to - so he didn't worry about money or, i guess, his health, too much. He was the spiritual leader of the modern conservative, libertarian cause. He was immersed in pop culture and wished to drag the right into the modern world - knowing this is how America speaks to the world. He was the heart of the matter. The fighter. Losing him is like a fiery planet going dark. My heart felt condolences go out to Susie and the kids.(h/t Jay in Ames) Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I loved a lot of what he did but my favorite was the online Troopathon to raise money for MAF to send care packages to deployed troops. Twelve hours of Breitbart and friends. Last one I caught he offered to let a lefty punch him in the face in exchange for a huge donation (and of course, no one took him up on it--use their own money? To do something nice for guys stuck in Afghanistan? Horrors.)
He's got four kids. Posted by: HeatherRadish at March 01, 2012 09:17 AM (ZKzrr) 22

"I stopped following him on twitter a while back because he got so many
hate filled tweets it was too much for me. I cannot say what I think of those people." It was just nonstop hate. Even last night, people were screaming at him. The guy just couldn't catch a break from it. They didn't just disagree... they outright gleefully smeared this man. Sadly, I can only imagine the comments from these people today. I shouldn't check. Off the top of my head: Heart Attack Stroke Aneurism Bacterial Meningitis Sudden Acute Appendicitis. I'm sure there are more possibilities, too. The first three can kill with (literally) no warning. The last two can take less than 24 hours to kill you, and it's possible that it could take longer than that to diagnose them (I have an uncle who was lucky enough to survive Bacterial Meningitis, he went to bed with a sore throat and a headache, and woke up paralyzed from the neck down.). To Andrew's family: I never met him, though I feel like I knew him from his writing and his works. I mourn his loss, and please accept my profound condolences. To all: it is in our interests to not simply continue what he started, but to expand upon it, to build upon it, to grow it. Died at 43, "unexpectedly from natural causes". huh? Will there be an autopsy? For the conspiracy minded, he just said a couple weeks ago at CPAC that he obtained videos of Obama in college, presumably damning, that he would air during the election. I would like to think he hid plenty of backups in different locations for safe keeping. Posted by: Uncledave at March 01, 2012 09:33 AM (nJ32z) 130

A true culture warrior was lost but its up to us to not let his passing go quietly. Now, more than ever do we need to publicize the inequities in values, culture and the media...Godspeed Andrew!

What an inspiration Andrew Breitbart has been to me - same age as me, and when I looked at all the thingshe's been able to do, it provoked me to ask myself "what the hell am I doing?" And the answer I came up with was: "not enough." I haven't felt this sad since Reagan died, tho WFB was a close second. Many prayers and condolences to his wonderful family. Also, quick question: At CPAC he mentioned being in possession of tapes of Obama from his college days (if I recall correctly). Who gets to decide when those are released now? @ 129 For the conspiracy minded, he just said a couple weeks ago at CPAC that he obtained videos of Obama in college, presumably damning, that he would air during the election. I would like to think he hid plenty of backups in different locations for safe keeping.
He was here in town last weekend and Breitbart mentioned some dynamite material he was developing, and some new information that he was planning on releasing over the summer into the fall. When he spoke, he empahsized confirmation of the info and that he would be proven "right" ( his words - he was always right ) in releasing the info. I'm really sad now.
One of the things I'll always remember is a story he told about when he turned conservative: He started his undergrad at Tulane coming in as a typical California liberal, thinking that southerns and conservatives were stupid. But while there, he found out that some of the smartest people he met were southern conservatives and that the liberalism was destroying New Orleans. As a Tulane grad who came from Boulder, I had the exact same epiphany. I always wanted to meet him and share that. He was and always will be an inspiration to me. Oh man, I can't even get this through my head. First of all, I feel somewhat embarrassed that my first thoughts were selfish: who's got the videos? Who is going to ever replace his guts and ability to force the left to play by there own rules? This is why he was SO hated by the left, btw. He made them live by the same standards the left forced on everyone else, and he did it so deftly and with such relish. I had NO idea how young he was. Dude was younger than me, and I'm only 45. I was certain he was in his early 50s. This is just an enormous loss for the conservative cause, as Breitbart was the logical heir to Rush Limbaugh as the leading voice of conservatism in America, and Limbaugh doesn't have more than ten years left in him, if we're lucky. Damn.

Posted by: Truth at March 01, 2012 10:04 AM (GL1SF) Interesting choice of words, as you gloat over and mock the dead. See, the funny thing is that all too soon, you, too, will face death, and then you'll have to answer to God about how you were having a good snerk at the death of a decent man, and the suffering that resulted from it. You'll want to weasel out of "as you sow, so shall you reap" at that point. It will be difficult. You are pitiable, but disgusting nonetheless. But especially did he derive firmness and decision, from the peculiar strength of his conviction concerning the righteousness and necessity of this war. Had he not sought the light of the Holy Scriptures, in thorough examination and prayer, had his pure and honest conscience not justified the act, even in the eye of that Searcher of hearts, whose fear was his ever-present, ruling principle, never would he have drawn his sword in this great quarrel, at the prompting of any sectional pride, or ambition, or interest, or anger, or dread of obloquy. But having judged for himself, in all sincerity, he decided, with a force of conviction as fixed as the everlasting hills, that our enemies were the aggressors, that they assailed vital, essential rights, and that resistance unto death was our right and duty. On the correctness of that decision, reached through fervent prayer, under the teachings of the sure word of Scripture, through the light of the Holy Spirit, which he was assured God vouchsafed to him, he stood prepared to risk, not only earthly prospects and estate, but an immortal soul; and to venture, without one quiver of doubt or fear, before the irrevocable bar of God the Judge. The great question: "What if I die in this quarrel," was deliberately settled; so deliberately, so maturely, that he was ready to venture his everlasting all upon the belief that this was the path of duty.

When my ex was working in DC he was standing in the hallway in the Capitol building waiting to go into a hearingwhen the guy next to him let out a grunt and toppled over face first. Massive heart attack, probably dead before he hit the ground, the guy was maybe 35. There is going to be no Breitbart magic to bring the party together. The eventual nominee is going to limp into the general election and Obama is going to clobber him. Someone has to pick up the slack. I'm hopeful someone will. The Right is more media-savvy than it was.
The Right has a few key people who make the "jobs" of the rest of us easier. He was one. George F. Will, currently unpopular among some hip conservatives and every registered Democrat, is another. Good job, Mr. Breitbart. Posted by: CJ at March 01, 2012 10:36 AM (9KqcB) 563

TMZ is reporting that he had heart problems last year:
http://www.tmz.com/2012/03/01/andrew-breitbart-dead/ Andrew Breitbart -- founder of the popular news website Breitbart.com -- died early this morning at the age of 43. According to his website, Breitbart -- the political journalist who broke the Anthony Weiner penis pic story -- died "unexpectedly from natural causes" shortly after midnight this morning in L.A. A statement on Breitbart reads, "We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior." Andrew is survived by his wife and 4 children. Breitbart's father-in-law told reporters Andrew was walking near his Brentwood home around midnight when he collapsed. The father-in-law says someone saw Andrew collapse and called paramedics ... who raced to the scene and tried to revive him. Breitbart was transported to UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. According to reports, Breitbart suffered from heart problems last year. What Breitbart did that others don't is he waded out in public and called the Left out for being vile scum to their face.
Most prominent right-wingers live in big lefty cities and keep a low profile in crowds cause they know they are outnumbered. They don't know if there is a crazy there, so they keep their politics to the column, or radio show, tv debate. Breitbart didn't give a fuck. He'd stand up in a crowd of left-wing scum and say, you all are vile, leftist, fascist trash. Nobody else had balls like that. Standing up in a crowd of people that hate you takes guts. Takes massive physical bravery because half the crowd is hoping you die and hoping one among them is unhinged enough to do something violently evil. The Left has grown used to using physical intimidation to get their way. Breitbart stood up to that. Posted by: Clubber Lang at March 01, 2012 10:43 AM (ZPrif) 590

Leftists, consider.
There is only so much pressure you can place upon a group of people before they move from shouting and screaming in anger to being quiet in anger. Theoretically, the Leftist loves to imagine that he could achieve revolution, and right all the wrongs done, in his eyes, by his many and varied enemies. In practice, it's horrible, awful beyond belief, and something that only a foolish child would wish for. What I am trying to say is don't... keep partying, demonizing the Right, celebrating the deaths or the failings or the unhappiness. This country is already at a fevered pitch. Don't keep stoking the flames. Truth, upthread, celebrated the discord and lack of unity. Don't do that. Just. Don't. Do it. Posted by: Kinley Ardal at March 01, 2012 10:45 AM (BDUnJ) 602

With Andy... Hard to properly put into words how the man inspired me... helped me remember what matters... who explained so much of what I saw (particularly in the news biz) but couldn't articulate. Harder still to find words that Andy's wife, his four kids, and his close friends like Ace, Jonah Goldberg, Dana Loesch, et al, might find some meaning in. So here's what I've got... we loved him in life, and we love him perhaps more as he has been taken away from us. There is only so much pressure you can place upon a group of people before they move from shouting and screaming in anger to being quiet in anger.
That is very true. A co-worker used to tell new employees that as long as I was yelling, swearing and waving my arms around, it was fine. It was when I was very calm and quiet and didn't swear at all that you needed to run as fast as you could. When Tony Snow passed away, I wept. So did I. I was thinking about that, at least with Tony there was time to work through the rage and the why God and to be in awe of the grace and dignity with which he handled it. This is just a kick to the gut. Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at March 01, 2012 10:57 AM (VtjlW) 653
TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire? And what shoulder and what art Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand and what dread feet? What the hammer? what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? What dread grasp Dare its deadly terrors clasp? When the stars threw down their spears, And water'd heaven with their tears, Did He smile His work to see? Did He who made the lamb make thee? Tiger, tiger, burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? Posted by: blaster at March 01, 2012 10:58 AM (7vSU0) 654

>>Time for the rest of us to saddle up and ride.....
Every year, Presidents and Congress produce budgets that fail to put forth a credible plan to save our country and put our nation back on the path to fiscal order. Last year was different with the passage of the Ryan budget, which actually reformed the tax code and saved Medicare. Unfortunately, big-government politicians in Washington - especially liberals - would rather demagogue serious reforms and resort to budget gimmicks in order to trick the American people into believing that Congress is actually working to rescue our economy. Barack O'SCFOAMF released a budget that continued his massive tax-and-spend agenda. If this budget were to actually pass, our economy would collapse in the year 2027, because our debt-to-GDP ratio would be beyond anything the world has ever seen. But the President and the left think it is a "blueprint" for an "American built to last." Yeah right! It is a blueprint for an America built to fail! Our national debt is over $15 trillion and is expected to hit $16 trillion before the end of this year. When President OFuck took office it was just over $10 trillion, and that was unacceptable. Even if you subscribe to the notion that we have to spend a lot now in order to stave off another recession, one has to admit that the time for cutting back must come soon - yet the President's budget doesn't cut back…ever. The President claims $4 trillion in debt reduction over the next decade. Besides the massive $1.5 trillion tax hikes the President proposed, the rest of the "savings" comes from legislation already passed by Congress! He counts the savings enacted from the Budget Control Act and the sequestration as if they are new savings that he languished over to find. He also claims that somehow, miraculously, the economy is going to jump start at an fantastic pace and that government spending is somehow going to be reduced. He also claims "war savings" as a way to pay for new spending. War savings is the money that we are not spending on the war. However, the war was financed through deficit spending so it's not like we suddenly have new money to spend. It's this kind of gimmickry that is the undergirding in so many budgets and so many spending bills, labeled as "paid fors." It is these kinds of false accounting tricks that have helped balloon our deficits to unsustainable levels, and they need to stop. Help us from Heaven Andrew! God's plan is much bigger than we can perceive. In the immediate sense, we as conservatives see the loss of a great man who took the Left to task for its hypocrisy and evil, and we see only the loss. Ultimately, though, the loss of a man like Breitbart might be enough to rally us together, even if our idiot candidates continue to bicker. Doesn't make it any easier, though. 1) Saddened by the loss of an effecrive warrior. 2) Enraged by the gloating of the liberals that are happy he is dead. Those assholes talk about civility and tolerance only when it suits them. I am so sick of the god damn media in this country that pushes the left's agenda. I guess this is such troubling news because I felt like Andrew would help usher in a new age of media where conservative viewpoints were given a voice. He did that. Now I guess it is up to the rest of us to carry it on further. Posted by: California Red at March 01, 2012 11:19 AM (DXTKe) 743

Didn't know the guy, but one thing always struck me about him. He was a guest on some radio station, and when the host talked about getting information to him he replied..."I'm really easy to get a hold of".
I don't think I've ever heard any major player of any party state that. Nor any actor. But he was serious, and gave out info if you wanted to contact him. That is one of the reasons that made him a great person, at least in my eyes... Posted by: HH at March 01, 2012 11:22 AM (KB0hv) 749

Up on Drudge now:
DEAR READER: In the first decade of the DRUDGEREPORT Andrew Breitbart was a constant source of energy, passion and commitment. We shared a love of headlines, a love of the news, an excitement about what's happening. I don't think there was a single day during that time when we did not flash each other or laugh with each other, or challenge each other. I still see him in my mind's eye in Venice Beach, the sunny day I met him. He was in his mid 20's. It was all there. He had a wonderful, loving family and we all feel great sadness for them today... What a shitty day this is. I am reminded of one of my favorite Breitbart moments, his speech at CPAC this year when he admonished everyone to get behind whoever is nominated against Obama. He knew how evil this regime is and what America is in for if we get four more years of it. I think he had to be merry to keep from being terrified by what he found every day. Posted by: rockmom at March 01, 2012 11:16 AM (NYnoe) I agree 100%. I hope this CPAC video is posted again, and again, and again until the election this November.I am heartsick about Andrew's death, far more than I normally am for people I do not know. However, his message was COURAGE. All who believed in his message need to continue the fight. This is a huge loss for us all, but mostly his family and friends, and I do pray for their comfort and peace. tsick about Andrew's death...but I know his courage is contagious and the fight will go on against this socialist and his policies. I know in my heart that was only a testament to his effectiveness. He didn't bat 1,000. No one swinging that often ever could. But he was always swinging. And when you swing more, if you've got any talent at all, you hit more. He hit plenty. My bottom line for him: *That's* how to live your life, man. Make an impact in what you stand for, whatever it is, every day, every minute, because each one could be your last. Don't pull up short. It's possible this post stands at odds with his worldview - not of liberalism, but of liberals themselves. So be it. RIP. Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. --Dylan Thomas Posted by: Brother Cavil, in Cylon hell at March 01, 2012 12:10 PM (GBXon) 844

Maybe he knew he was ill, and therefore he lived like he was dying. He lived. The man was fearless, a champion of truth, and a destroyer of hypocrisy. Conservatives, like myself, need to emulate him by confronting lies and distortions when ever we find them.A terrible, terrible loss, for his family and the nation. I am gutted. There will be no other like him, but perhaps by our sheer numbers we can be as consequential as he was.

It has been said that you can measure a man by the quality of his enemies. Given the enemies that Andrew Breitbart had, it is self-evident that few finer people were to be found of his generation, and indeed, in the world at large. His unexpected death does nothing to diminish his works, only the world which is poorer for his passing.

Thanks for those of you who responded kindly, I was being sincere.
I may have liberal views, but that doesn't define me as a person. Neither does being a conservative define you as a person. What you do is what defines you. The decisions you make, and the consequences they have. AB understood that, and hence I respect him. He didn't trot out buzzwords or spin nonsense. He presented facts. Evidence. Film. What people had said and done. While it was quite a thorn in our side, I respected him nonetheless. Because you can trade words all you want, but when you are confronted with facts there is nothing else to say. I think ACORN had a role to play in building a better society. Sadly, it was mismanaged, and I'd prefer that mismanagement come to light rather than bury wrongs because of partisan lines. We may have our differences when it comes to the role of government, but we are still all Americans. Some of us can be rude, loud and obnoxious, but most of us are compassionate, caring, and self reliant. AB was a fellow American, a fellow family man, and a fellow graduate of my alma mater. Our differences are small compared to that. It may come as a shock, but I read this site every day. Redstate as well. Along with liberal blogs, and them some MSM sites. I like to get full view of not only what is going on, but what different people with different viewpoints think about it. I'll be here. I doubt you'll ever change my politics, but you all have certainly changed the way I view America. We aren't enemies. Again, my condolences. Posted by: Grayly at March 01, 2012 05:41 PM (V8Rvi) 890

He was a thorn in the side of the libtardMSM conglomerate and helped to expose and destroy corrupt groups like ACORN. He never backed down from a fight and he relished the grand mal seizures he elicited from the leftwing moonbats in the media and the political arena.
And of course, the Left, which hasn’t been this overjoyed since 9/11, has flooded Facebook, Twitter, and their respective blogs and OpEds with the requisite bile in response to his death. That’s alright. We’ll just wait until another leftard icon croaks so we can get in a few guffaws in return. You rest in peace, Andrew. We will carry on the fight.
