You can still buy a bottle of small-batch whiskey at a re-creation of one of the largest whiskey distilleries of the late-18th century United States. Even better, it was owned by George Washington, the only Founding Father who, when he wasn’t building a nation, was trying to lift its spirits. Immensely popular during its time, Washington’s distillery was located three miles from his estate in Mount Vernon. Records show that it produced 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799, the year of his death. It also produced such delights as peach and persimmon brandy. The distillery was destroyed in a fire in 1814, but resurrected in 2007, and today, conducts tours and whiskey tastings.

Authorities in Florida are asking for the public’s help in tracking down a man who they say burglarized a Little League concession stand wearing nothing more than a ballcap and gloves. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office says the naked burglar struck the stand at Fischer Field in Dunedin almost two weeks ago. Deputies say the burglar stole cameras and a cash box with $250 inside, and he caused $5,000 in damage.

Had my annual physical early this week. Lost 40 pounds since last time he measured. BP way down and off meds. Blood glucose way down. Good/bad cholesterol within the norm. Doc asked what I was doing and I started to tell him low carb/Keto/Intermittent fasting and I could tell he wasn't receptive at all. He told me to go back to my standard American diet because Keto bad or something.
Time for a new Doc.

I've gone back to Brooks as well. Runner's World used to do these shoe reviews back in the '80s, and IIRC, there was some scandal where Brooks was always coming in #1 on all the tests.

Yep. And cheap mattresses can screw up your whole body. Never cheap out on shoes or mattresses.
BUT... you do have to keep in mind that while cheap shoes and mattresses are crap, expensive shoes and mattresses aren't necessarily good. You have to do your research to determine whether the high price is due to their actual quality or simply due to trendiness.

Way back when I was just starting out in machine shops, we'd mix some lard in with our cutting oil. It worked great for tapping threads in holes and you'd rarely break a tap off inside when you used it.
You didn't want to break a tap off inside a threaded hole. Took forever to remove it and the foreman would remember that forever. And by "forever" I mean "come time to pass out raises."

Although they might not be getting groupies the way they did in the past, the groupie culture is far from dead. It's actually most apprent in the hip hop/ rap culture; after a show, it's basically a freaking plethora of scantaily clad women who are guests of the band. Whores on parade.
Also... 29 olds are not the ones to ask about groupie procurement. Ask the bands tour manager. Or maybe even the stage manager. Most of those guys are over 35. They are they ones who have direct contact with the band, rather than some 29 year old who is somewhat new on the crew.

I don't have a better answer than "the internet," but that's where I found what I thought was 5 lbs of it, and, when it arrived, it was 5 gallons. I spent a day messily scooping it into various containers for the freezer, but later I read you can just store it at room temperature.

The Scout troop conducted our annual food drive for a local food bank today from 8:00 to 4:00. We have done it on the Saturday before Easter for nearly a decade now. Folks are quite supportive and we usually deliver a hefty load of foodstuffs and funds to the food bank.
It isn't until the evening that I realize that spending eight hours standing up makes for a long and tiring day. G'night, all!

I worked backstage at a conert arena until about a year and a half ago.
I read that roadie post. I can't say I'm at all disappointed with the kids vs groupies scene today from reading that. It's about time some sanity was returned to the rock scene. Maybe hope isn't lost on the newer generation after all.

When I was younger, I would take a 10 day to two week motorcycle/camping trip every year. I always traveled the tiniest little back roads on the map.
In the course of those trips, I would happen upon all sorts of interesting Americana. Local festivals, museums, mom & pop restaurants, etc., and of course, the people.
At any rate, my favorite two museums were the Greyhound Bus Museum in Hibbing, Minnesota, and the Granite Museum in Elberton, Georgia.

I expected the same treatment from my Dr since I started low carb eating in 8/2015. Been suprised how well it has been accepted by the medical community here. Not a single detrimental comment. Down 86 pounds and off blood pressure meds. Still take chlosterol meds. Blood sugar allways on the middle of normal.

When I was in high school I worked at Taco Bell. We made everything inside the store so the beans started out as raw hard pinto beans and we pressured cooked then mashed them. We cooked big 10 lb. bags of ground beef then drained the fat. We then took the fat out to the back and emptied it into a 55 gal drum. The drums were picked up by a rendering company.
Back then Taco Bell was real food and tasty too.

I certainly appreciate the offer. My dad's also offered to come take us back to CO, but being 400 miles from the vehicle is silly, and the whole reason he's in CO is to help my Mother-in-law (my Father-in-law passed away last Friday and we were on our way home today after the funeral Thursday) which he can't do if he's driving all over the plains fetching us.

Sorry I didn't catch your post on SCA site. I've been out of it for about twenty years or so. I have up when too many people started taking it way too seriously.
I never really had a persona per se. It just depended on how much I weighed and who I could finagle into making garb for me. One time, I had the most beautiful houpelond. I loved it, but five pounds later, the zip wouldn't zip. My last set of garb was a long tunic and surplice. Until I quit selling jewelry at Renfaires a couple years back, I used to wear it there. It was light and cool and I could wear shorts and a few short under it. I never had a registered device or name, either. When I got around to it, the heralds were getting very stuffy about names and devices, and it wasn't worth the effort.

The ancient Egyptians were pretty much the masters of working with it. It's really quite remarkable. There seems to be only two camps on how they did it - the accepted wisdom is copper chisels and other primitive methods; OR, the nutbars say it was high tech/aliens/weirdo stuff.

That's true. I had this huge cowboy cut bone-in steak a couple weeks ago, there was no way to cook it over a fire/coals really, way too thick. I was camping. So I reverse seared it. Started out in a Dutch Oven on really low heat for about a half hour. Then got a fry pan as hot as I could get and seared a couple minutes on both sides with bacon grease as lube. It was fantastic!

George O Smith, who wrote the Venus Equilateral stories for Astounding, was an electrical engineer who worked on developing radar fuses and other such items during WW2.
At one point they were building a specific fuse and the specs said to use beef tallow as a dope to keep the threads from binding. They had to go dance with food Ration board to get beef tallow, and it became such a problem they asked if they could plate with Cadmium instead, and they were told that Cadmium would absorb neutrons so they couldn't use it.
He said they never figured out what exactly they were building it for but they had suspicions later.

I come from a family of stone masons. The area around Beverley,
Yorkshire is populated with head stones which bear my g-g-grandfather's
initials. Some very interesting decorative stone carvings too, in
churches.

The other day she was reading about destination funerals, and said she might set money aside so her friends and family could go to her favorite vacation spot on her after she passes. I told her not to do that I might need the money. She said for what, a bus load of Asian women. I said we all grieve in our own way.

I recall reading about this old guy that wanted a Viking funeral. And his friends got permission from the Coast Guard to take his ashes out in a small Viking boat and burn the boat.
It was "so long as we can put out a patrol to keep folks from the fire, it is just another marine event we have to work with."
A lot of my Coast Guard Aux are like that.

My grandparents were married for 72 years. My grandfather died a few years ago at 97. My grandmother is still alive, at 100. They are my proof that marriage does work.

The Deadliest Catch showed them doing that for someone. It seemed fake to me because they had a little pouch of "ashes", much smaller than I have gotten back for 50 pound dogs.

I believe marriage works, I'm really luck that my wife has a great sense of humor. My maternal grandparents were married 60 something years, my grandfather passed, my grandmother followed within a year. I'm glad you're grandmother is still going at 100, that's really awesome!

That entire LampersandM album is teh shiznit. A buddy of mine in HS had a 4-channel discrete sound system and had that release in that format. We listened to it a lot.
IMHO, that's one of the best produced albums ever. Everything sounds crystal clear. And you can crank it up without hurting the old eardrums. Much.

Hey - why don't you mail some pics of those works to MisHum? Can't think of a better item for ONT photo fare (we send pics of our skeery gunzz to Weasel for the gun thread, for example).
As an early-war buff, I assume you are aware (probably know more about it than I) of the variety - no, confusion and chaos - of naval aircraft markings in the Pacific during that period. I had the impression there was no uniform scheme, and different carriers had different markings. Getting rid of that little red circle - which somehow wasn't the best symbol in that particular war and theater - was I think the first order of business.

A lot of that - as I understand - was along the lines of 'Thank you sir, we'll get right on that" and was done when time and material permitted. The carriers were probably quicker to adopt new paint schemes than many of the land bases. But then, the SBD I have from Wasp in summer 1942 is in grey uppers over light grey underside, which was a camo pattern from about 1940-41.

October '41, Intermediate Blue was authorized over the Light Gray. White codes were still carried, but the air group number usually vanished. This lasted until about February.
Dana Bell notes that some carriers were issued with a blue top color that more closely matched the blue stain used on the flight decks. This might be the source of the dark blue painted on Spitfires launched by USS Wasp for the Malta runs.
April '42 larger US stars with red dots were ordered. Some stars remained small, as seen on VB-8 or missing as seen on VS-6 while others went over-sized. Stars in six positions was authorized. Along with red and white rudder stripes. Air groups started to transition to black fuselage codes.
May '42 the red dots and rudder stripes were ordered removed. Like all the other changes, these changes could only be done with time permitting. Mid May '42 when Hornet and Enterprise were rushing back to Pearl from failing to join the Coral Sea battle, some VT-8 TBDs still sported red dots.
June '42 all air groups seemed to be finally in compliance with the May directive.

If you go to a "you pull it" type yard, you should be able to get a complete door, with glass, for under a hundred bucks. Back in January, a buddy and I got two left side door shells for an '02 Ram 4-door for $130 in Phoenix. Absolutely rust-free. His son is delighted with them.
The glass alone shouldn't run more than 30 bucks. Look on Ewetoob for a video showing how to replace it. Usually not very difficult, but there may be some tricky/hidden fasteners.

I've got a half-dozen 1/200 P-51Ds done up as Red Tails, and a half-dozen Bf-109Es in Royal Romanian Air Force colors.
Unfortunately, the planes are so small that I didn't put national markings on them. But aside from that, they look fairly nice.
Now I just need some appropriately scaled B-17s or B-24s to run some air raids on Ploesti...
