Valerie Jarrett's Book Makes the Corrupt New York Times' Bestseller List -- Despite Being Ranked 1,030 on Amazon

Collusion?

Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett’s book is number 1,030 on Amazon with only three reviews, but is on the NYT Best Seller list. An industry insider said that was "inconceivable" and that Jarrett likely paid a company that helps authors buy their way onto the list.

One such company buys 10,000 copies of an author's book and tries to prevent bestseller lists from realizing the sales aren’t organic, in which case the book may be moved down or taken off the list.

There were 12,600 reported sales of Jarrett’s book, enough to rank it highly on the Publishers Weekly chart, but Publishers Weekly did not put it on its list at all.

"Given the organic sales of that book and the fact that during the entire week of rollout it barely cracked the top 100 on Amazon, there's no way the book should have a place on the NYT Best Seller list. Inconceivable," one prominent book industry insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. "There's likely an effort to game the system, it's the only explanation."

Jarrett's book outsold all but the top four books on the NYT list, according to BookScan, which tracks sales figures. But instead of putting it at number five, the Times placed it lower, including behind one book billed as "a behind-the-scenes look at the daytime talk show 'The View,'" which is seventh.

"It should have been number five, except they excluded a big chunk of her sales for being sketchy. They've declared shenanigans," one longtime book editor told TheDCNF also on the condition of anonymity.

The New York Times uses certain bookstores for its list. I think this is how they keep conservatives off the list -- when you're sampling a dozen bookstores in New York and other leftwing cities, Bill O'Reilly books aren't going to be high on the list.

The bookstores the Times samples aren't known to the public -- supposedly. But I've read that these strategic book-buying companies actually do know which book stores matter for the list, and buy from them. It's the equivalent of rigging a poll's sample.

But it takes a lot more money to get it on the list and KEEP it on the list. Just getting mine to the bottom of the list for one week cost more than it was worth.

It is shocking and unthinkable that someone would even attempt to game the bestseller list. It is downright despicable to even consider that the reputable New York Times - the paper of record, the old gray lady - would know and not respond should the unthinkable happen. To suggest that the New York Times would actively assist such efforts is the kind of speech that is in fact violence.

Yeah, the only surprising thing about this story is that Ferret-Face ValJar didn't use the same scammers who helped "sell" the Obama books to various government agencies so that they could boost the sales numbers.

The "bought" books probably go back to the wholesaler, and get repackaged and shipped out to the bookstores again. They get to "sell" the exact same physical books many times over. Many, many trees are saved!

The thing is I'm not sure it even matters any more. That used to be the gold standard for books to read, like Oprah's recommendation was worth tens of thousands of sales no matter how fake the book was. But today I'm not sure most people even see what's on the list any longer, or care.

109 The New York Times uses certain bookstores for its list. I think this is how they keep conservatives off the list -- when you're sampling a dozen bookstores in New York and other leftwing cities, Bill O'Reilly books aren't going to be high on the list.

The bookstores the Times samples aren't known to the public -- supposedly. But I've read that these strategic book-buying companies actually do know which book stores matter for the list, and buy from them. It's the equivalent of rigging a poll's sample.

Yes, Ace, you are correct. I used to know about this in detail. Also, back in the '90s (when I pulled my stunt), the names of the stores which reported to the NYTimes was more easily discovered, and not treated like the Top Secret Info like it is today.

In my case, I heard offhandedly at a publishing company event about how important it was to get books into one particular store, since it was known to report to the bestseller lists. A lightbulb went off over my head (the same idea of course had already occurred to many people over the years), and I spent weeks calling around and traveling around to learn the names of more and more such stores. I didn't have a comprpehensive list, of counrse, but I probably got the names of about 40%-50% of the stoes that report to the NYT.

Then, months later when my own book came out, I myself went to all those nearby stores over several days and anonymously bought many copies of my own book, and had friends on other cities do the same in their regions, and I repaid them. I spent over $1,000 ultimately, but the gambit worked -- boom, on the list.

Of course, it only lasted that one week.

Did getting on the list spur sales to such a degree that I was paid back in royalties? I don't think so. But it did allow me to claim to be a "bestselling author," which did help me to get subsequent book deals. Overall, it was a worthwhile trick!

I later realized that probably MOST of the books on the list are only on the list because of people and publishers doing similar things.

Nowadays, of course, the whole thing is weaponing and turned into a professional racket: You simply HIRE unethical PR firms to do it for you.

DHS needs a rule that illegal aliens who are awaiting asylum or other immigration hearings (and that's nearly all of them these days) must wait for their hearing date in the city or state that DHS assigns them to.

Since hearing dates are scheduled years off into the future now, thanks to the left's success in overwhelming the system, we should make illegal aliens stay in their "sanctuaries" until then, and we should tell them that if they are caught outside their assigned area before their hearing date, they will be immediately fast-tracked for deportation. (That will give them incentive not to try and move to a red state).

I know a guy who is a member of a fringe religion and one of their duties is to buy many copies of the leader's books from various stores. They get assigned to stores - Amazon, B&N, etc. - and have to buy some number of them. It's the same game, just done with more people and much harder to detect.

It might take a few months to work out, and there might be a few accidental hits and misses, but for the most part, figuring this sort of thing out when you have a substantial amount of the data should be a non-issue with machine learning techniques.
