In the United States, the practice of training dogs for military purposes was largely abandoned after World War I. I tried a new coffee place this morning, called Javatini's. (Need a decaf coffee fix and don't want to give Starbucks my money anymore.)
Everything went well... except that there were these two loudmouth older men sitting in the corner with their coffee, going on and on about healthcare and how they can't believe some people don't want the gubmint involved. Thankfully I was trying to actively NOT listen and as a result never heard the names "Trump" or "Obama" or "Bush" or anyone else's name uttered, but it did seem they were trying to have a great liberal compassion-off.
I got out of there with my coffee to go (Irish Cream Latte) and was happy not to have to listen to those guys. Will go back to Javatini's but hope they're not there again next time.

Talk to people who work in schools. More and more kids are a gigantic mess. We as a society are destroying the nuclear family and the results are entirely predictable. My sister works as an aide in an early elementary school, preschool through first grade, and it is common for to be out of control to the point where they have to be restrained, and picked up and carried to the office. It is common for them to strike teachers.
Through the welfare system and the attitude that baby daddies don't have to marry the mothers of their children, we're draining people of any sense of personal responsibility.

I hope you're right about hype (it's been called "weather porn"), but OTOH yesterday's prediction of 8 to 12 inches for this area was upped this evening to 12 to 24 with maybe some rain mixed in at the end, which adds to the risk of a power outage if the rain freezes on the power lines. This being already a blue state, the last thing we need is more snowflakes, special or otherwise.

I was in a local store today getting some stuff for snowmageddon and the guy from Warwick Ice Cream, a good local brand, was doing his order stuff with owner at the counter. There were some favorable comments about the book The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell so, since I'm a book addict, I bought it. Although not (by any means) a comedy, it has pretty good joke in the first chapters. There should be a support group for people who talk too much. They could call it On and On Anon.

I think this is a problem in search of a massive government solution. Clocks should adjust precisely for lat/lon, and depending on the season, minutes after sundown are shorter in duration....and of course longer after sun up, all adjusting automatically so that there are always twelve hours of light, and twelve hours of dark.
The new clocks will obviously be prohibitively expensive, so income adjusted subsidies will be required. People who refuse to purchase the new government approved clocks through government mandated retailers will be forced to pay a 'fine'.

Lots to report, including some really good news.
As expected, today was Joyce's last day for chemo. They've also discontinued the Temador (daily pill), which was expected. She'll continue on the Avastin indefinitely, but that's only every couple of weeks, so much less strain on her and Hubby (and Niece).
On the other hand, her platelet count was low (likely as result of treatment); Hubby hastened to add that it was still "pretty good for end of chemo. Will recheck on Thursday."
Here's the really great news, though: she was able to walk about 5 yards with help - Hubby says that the "best news is that she is able to walk short distances; we'll investigate local PT at facility rather than at home."
WooHoo!
Please keep praying for strength and courage for her.

I have observed here in the Wilmington, DE vicinity that houses occupied by former DuPont employees from the 50s and 60s pretty regularly have a container of DDT powder on the premises. I asked my FiL one time why that was. Was DDT powder part of folks' annual bonuses? He laughed and shrugged his shoulders.

Anyway The GOP should have been careful for what they wished for. The American Public gave a big Fuck You to the powers that be this past November. Now they have the chance to govern and they can't. Repeal Replace Obamacare Period.

They can't. The original Obamacare bill passed with 60 Dem votes in the Senate. Filibuster proof majority. Then Kennedy died. So, the House passed the identical bill and Obama signed it.
Then comes the second bill. House Dems passed a bill that was (allegedly) funding issues only. Senate passed it through the reconciliation process. They no longer had their 60 votes, as Brown replaced Kennedy, but the reconciliation process is not subject to filibuster, so they just needed a simple majority.
With the numbers they have, the GOP has three choices:
1. Do nothing
2. Change the rules in the Senate to eliminate filibusters for legislation
3. Something like what they are doing now.
There are not 50 GOP senators willing to completely ditch the filibuster. There has been talk of eliminating it for SCOTUS nominees if the Dems filibuster Gorsuch, but guys like Hatch, McCain, etc will not go along with eliminating it for legislation.
As I understand it, the GOP's 3 step plan is:
A. Use the reconciliation process to change stuff that is purely funding (that's the bill they are working on now).
B. Have Secretary Price use his power to implement changes in the law where he has discretion (all those place in the law where it says that the "Secretary shall"). I think there's like 1500 different place in Obamacare that uses that language.
C. New additional legislation to repeal. This can only happen if the GOP get more numbers in the Senate in 2018 (or if the Dems come to the table before then in light of the changes in the first two phases - yeah right).

I am 100% in agreement with you on the first paragraph.
I go back and forth on the filibuster, since I think it will come back to bite us in the future. But, as the Dems showed under Reid, they will get rid of it when it really matters.
But, it's a moot point. The numbers simply are not there to get rid of it. I wish we could get rid of humps like McCain, Graham, Collins, Hatch, Murkowski, etc, etc, etc. But, sadly, we are stuck with them.

Though I agree that it's not as easy as people seem to believe , no one wants to hear the nuances and complexities. They just hear that as excuses instead of legitimate reasons. I sympathize with this position because the 'it's complicated ' excuse has been used illegitimately more often than not.

The Senate passed something that said that they needed 67 votes to kill the treaty Obama came up with, not 67 to pass it as the Constitution declares. Since it passed with the 67 votes, they gave Obama the power to negotiate a treaty that the Senate would not have to approve.

If you think about it, the GOP has only had a majority in both the House and Senate for about 10 of the last 60 years, and only about 2 of those years with a GOP President.
Plus, most of the places that the GOP House/Senate members come from are areas that were Democrat controlled. People like to talk about how the GOP controls the South, but it has just been in the last 15 years that they have taken control of those states' legislatures, they were almost always still Dem controlled. Morgan Griffith, R-VA, is the one who dug up the Holman Rule to defund government positions. He was the Majority Leader in the Virginia House before running for the congressional seat, and now he's bringing that hammer to DC. He fought to get the GOP in control of the state house, and he was elected when the GOP took back over the US House.
McConnell, McCain, Graham, and the Maine/Alaska bints are used to doing whatever the Dems wanted them to do so that they could get some little scraps of legislation thrown to them by the Dems. The new members are now "Majority" GOP, and they are trying to remind this dickwits that the GOP is now in control, and it's time to do what the GOP voters want, finally.

If a pair of brothers or a pair of sisters can't produce children, they'll argue that birth defects are off the table and thus there's no reason to deny a pair of same-sex siblings the romantic love they (totes naturally, and stuff) feel for each other.

Just as with wine travel, prefer the smaller places, avoid the places that are on the tourism circuit, and always avoid "events" (well, except 2nd Amendment night last year at a very good brewery/distillery near one of our gyms, where most of the brews are named after firearms, too).
Overall it can be a very nice package. Parking no issue (like in the old days), as they're mostly in industrial/commercial parks. Great variety in styles and brews. Informal atmosphere (very little hipster b.s., actually, it's mainstream). Dog-friendly for our friends who like to bring their pooches. Friendly and informative staff who often are also the brewers, so, edumucation. Food trucks that can be outstanding.
Not eating out that much for a while, for no particular reason, but a few brew-pubs are among the best and most reliable in the non-ethnic restaurant category. Just ate at one Saturday after the Blue Angels' show.

I didn't, but I wanted to.
My buddy called me after he snapped his achilles tendon and told me that he thought he was being "over-medicated" and I agreed with him.

I wish I could get something to use periodically; I'm going to ask my doctor. Broke my humerus at the growth plate at 12, and lately it's been really hurting on occasion, a few times so I can't sleep easily. Also broke a leg and had a four inch plate that got removed a year later. It also sometimes acts up, and I get a Charlie horse in my arch. Sore and stiff for days.
It's only been pretty bad (wishing I had more than Tylenol) about three (?) times a month, maybe four. I had pills left over from a procedure last year and I milked them until Feb. (The cold weather and shoveling hasn't helped with the shoulder.) I've heard from friends that doctors have been reluctant to prescribe them, even for stuff you wouldn't think would be an issue.
Something stronger for those bad nights so I can fall asleep more easily would be nice though. =| Codeine makes me sick and at best I can take ibuprofen in very limited amount before my ulcer acts up, so I generally don't even chance it.
I guess I don't get the allure of taking too many. When I broke my leg and was in excruciating pain, taking the recommended amount made me so dizzy I almost vomited. Are there that many people who want to be so separated from what's going on in life? Heard about a former member of Three Doors Down (I think), who killed someone whilst under the influence, he had prescriptions for over 100 pills at a time!

I can't handle pain killers. They make me feel like shit. There were times I was damn glad to have them, but I generally don't take them when they give them too me. I never liked "drugs" in general. Yeah I can smoke a forest of weed, but hell no on the other shit.

Libre Office is pretty good as well, but the interface just isn't quite a polished and there are occasional inconsistencies when you are trying to exchange files with someone who uses MS.

The messed up thing was, after a while it didn't help too much my mom said. I got her on methadone (instead of the morphine pills) before she died, which is also a powerful painkiller, and it cut back on the disturbing dreams. She was on pill morphine, liquid when it got bad and fentanyl, plus Oxycodone (?).

Well, I can definitely speak for the musician. If a musician is in it for the power and the glory then that in itself becomes a drug, and when it becomes routine you need something "bigger". Its a hard thing to explain. It never bit me, because the huge sound of the amps, the whole viking aspect of being a metal guitar player was enough. Others not so much, they get hooked on the power, and they start to feel invincible. In a nutshell, people treat them like gods and they start to believe.
As far as others go, maybe life sucks too much and they just want to escape.

The docs all say he's too young to have fusion, so, meds. He takes Kadian, which is time-release morphine, and then he also takes morphine for the break through pain that flares up. Still, some days he cannot get out of his chair. Without the meds, he cannot even think, let alone move.
Is he addicted? Probably, but you would never know it. He functions quite highly right up until he cannot.
There are no other solutions, or we would have taken those paths. He won't die from the pain, nor from the morphine. He won't become addicted to heroin, or any other street drug. He will continue to provide for his family and pray that we all end up in heaven.
It is easy to judge when you aren't in the crosshairs.

After he was hospitalized for the final time (lung cancer), he was unable to take pills, and the patches weren't even touching the pain.
Took forever for both VA and Scott & White to come up with a game plan to manage the pain.
At the end, he barely had the strength to push the button on his pump.
I'm thankful that he wasn't in pain.

But this is the reason that those with much lesser injuries should not be prescribed with such opiates.
That sort of pain is not "human". It is WELL beyond the pale.

They gave me delaudid once, if I spelled it right. The nurse who gave it to me threw out some number, like it was 10-12X stronger than morphine. Not sure how strong it actually is, but it didn't do shit when my neck blew out.

there is a spectrum of pain, and a spectrum of treatment options, each with it's pluses and minuses.
further more, there is a variety of disease states that require pain management, and all patients are unique, so one size does NOT fit all.
treatment has to be customized for each patient, or you will fail to properly treat a certain percentage of the total.
there are NO simple answers.

Just because a drug can be abused does not mean that it can be responsibly prescribed - in appropriate doses - for pain management. If it is a problem for you to take, fine, don't take it. But that is no reason a doctor, in consultation with his patient, shouldn't use whatever drug if that is what is best for the patient.
I've had Vicodin prescribed to me on 2 separate occasions, and have had no issues with it. I still have most of the pills from the last time sitting in a drawer because my pain cleared up long before the pills ran out. They will sit there in that drawer until they expire, unless something happens where I need to manage the pain.

Thing is, doctor are already under extreme scrutiny from the feds regarding their prescription practices. It is already a highly regulated undertaking. Doctors can be reluctant to prescribe necessary pain management drugs because of fear that they will come under additional scrutiny if their records show lots of prescriptions for those kinds of meds.
I don't want to be in a position where a doctor won't write a script for pain killers because he is too worried that some people would like to see him get his license yanked.
The times I have been given Vicodin, I didn't need to have the meds. I could have gritted my teeth and suffered. But, why in the hell would I want to do that? Because some other people are prone to addictive behavior?

I never took as much as a Tylenol, because I was young.
When I was prescribed Vicodin? I was 25 and still active. It was more of a "break from reality" than it was a painkiller.

Yeah, the last one I had was about 4.5 millimeters. The doctor in the ER was named (I shit you not) Doctor Payne. He gave me I think Dilaudid and Fentanyl. I went from around a 9-10 on pain to NOTHING. I passed out. I had been up for around 26 hours at that point.

The ER doc also wrote me a scrip for Percocet- and I hoarded those. It took me around 7-8 months to pass that stone and I made sure I did not waste one of those on just a 1-2 hour stoppage.

Well, maybe that characterization was a bit emphatic. I am a libertine when it comes to vice anyway. It's bad enough seeing the government harm people for just enjoying themselves and not hurting anyone else. But, when the drug war bs spills over and affects other things, like a doctor prescribing meds for a patient in pain, I am easily annoyed. Perhaps too easily.

Actually, passing it was the easiest part. The pain was momentary and not really that bad. The high of seeing the stone finally out was sweeter than anything else.
(I'll admit it, I showed it to people. I still have it around here somewhere.)
The thing about kidney stones is that it kind of resets your pain scale. I tore a ligament in my shoulder in college and it was sunshine, puppy dog tails and rainbows compared to that.

By the time it gets to your dick, it's no longer so much of a problem. At least that was my experience. I had kidney stones only once, but the part that hurts is when they are up inside you, scratching their way through the internal plumbing.
That was my first run with Vicodin. Fortunately, I've had no problems with them since.

It only stopped around 5-6 times during that 8 months. The stones only really hurt when they block the ureter and the urine backs up into the kidney, causing them to swell and unleashing the pain.

I don't know what you mean by that last sentence. You can't outlaw addiction. I mean, you can try... that's what we have now. It doesn't work. Imprisoning people for becoming addicted to drugs just causes more pain. Not to mention that all our prisons are rife with drug use anyway. Hell, half the time, it's the CO's smuggling the stuff in.
People get all up on their moral high horse about how they have to protect people from drugs, and then the advocate policies that tear those very people's lives apart. How is someone who has a problem with coke going to be helped by having a felony conviction for drug use, spending some time in the slammer... He comes out, if he had a woman when he went in, she is probably gone. No job, no home. And now he gets to try to put his life back together with all that on his back.
Please, stop trying to help those people. You are not.

Wise doctor once told me to not be a martyr immediately after a surgery, as that could extend the length of recovery. I've always found that if I use that philosophy the first 24-48 hours, I need much less pain medication after that.

Mom might weigh 100 pounds. She has bone spurs on her spine. Her pain management 'doctor' has her on 80 mg of ocycontin, then the ocycodone, and valium. For 18 years. He should be not be prescribing drugs to a dog.
In other news, addictive behavior is just that and should be identified, if possible, in advance. Heroin users can be weaned off the stuff. Same for the lesser drugs. My opinion.
In other news, its farqing cold outside here in N. Indiana. And I do not like it. I need to make warm oatmeal for our hens. Several have gone on strike.

I packed one in my car. According to the weather reports, the height of the storm will be from 9am to 4pm (!), so, depending on when I can leave, the plows crossing our parking lot may have blocked me in and I'll need to dig out to get home to start the snowblower to get into my driveway.
This is going to be a terrible day.

I would love to do that. I'm trying to find something good to read at the moment, but almost all of the new books I've bought have turned out to be less interesting than I imagined.
If anybody here is a true crime buff, there's a new book out about the Thalia Massie case called A Death in the Islands. Massie was a Navy wife stationed in Hawaii in 1931 when she claimed she was raped by a gang of natives. Eventually, her husband took matters into his own hands and one of the accused ended up dead. The husband then got Clarence Darrow to defend him:
