Overnight Open Thread (27 May 2016)

Remembering the quintessential American Hero - and his son - On Memorial Day.

To Stewart, patriotism was a shared ideal. Even the wealthy and well-connected had the sacred duty to stand up and fight for their country.

So Stewart prepared for war. He logged more and more hours piloting his airplane. He hired a trainer to help him bulk up.

In March 1941 - nine months before Pearl Harbor - Stewart, who had just won an Oscar for "The Philadelphia Story," was sworn into the Army ... as a private.

After the Pearl Harbor attack, the Air Force wanted Stewart to sell war bonds, contending that he was too old (mid-30s) and too famous to risk flying combat missions.

But he pushed and wrangled and charmed until - finally - he was sent to England and put in command of a squadron of B-24 Liberator bombers.

Wish we had more folks like James Stewart and his adopted son Ronald McLean. This is a good sign though. Teen keeps American flag from hitting the ground.

European Vacation

Europe is screwed. Thousands of migrants saved this week as traffic on Liby-Italy route swells. In very relevant and related news, how ISIS is infiltrating the migrant route from Libya to Europe.

The Dead On Everest

Pretty deadly year so far on Mount Everest. The extraordinary cost of retireving dead bodies from Mount Everest.

VDH

President Obama is visiting Hiroshima. Why not Pearl Harbor?

Hate Crimes

See, this is why I hate "hate crime" legislation. One murder shouldn't be more special than any other. Just apply the highest punishment every time regardless of who is involved. It's not like the folks killing cops are going to now not do it because they're afraid of it being called a hate crime. 'Blue Lives Matter' bill makes attacks on cops a hate crime.

Modern Art

Heh. More evidence why we suffer through astronomical levels of dumbassery in this country today. Pranksters put a pair of glasses on the floor of a museum to trick patrons into thinking they are art.

Our Future

Canada

I really, really like this guy. He's the guy that shot and killed the Ottawa terrorist in 2014. Ambassador Kevin Vickers, former House sergeant-at-arms, tackles protester in Dublin.

Human Pups

Well OK then. The men who live as dogs. I have just one question. Which bathroom do they use or can they just use any tree, sign post or fire hydrant?

37 I read the article article on Kevin Vickers from the CBC. Canada evidently has as many loony leftists as we do, since the majority of commentators-at least the ones I read- thought that it was a "disgrace" for Vickers to get involved against the protests of other nations. Since I think he was probably worried about the safety of people there, I think they're nuts. He seems to be a brave, take action type of guy,

45 >>>Wish we had more folks like James Stewart and his adopted son Ronald McLean.

There used to be a thing called "noblesse oblige".
Noblesse oblige is a French phrase literally meaning "nobility obliges". It denotes the concept that nobility extends beyond mere entitlements and requires the person who holds such status to fulfill social responsibilities, particularly in leadership roles.

I can't recall the last time I've heard that term being used in reference to anyone in DC, NY, or LA. As Instapundit is wont to point out, our ruling class is the worst ever.

67 Eh, it's been a long time since NYS criminal law, but I'm pretty sure "special circumstances" murder contains murder of a corrections officer. (Different from a hate crime; the highest level murder charge the state can throw at you)

Cops are probably in there too, unless the laws were written back when it was assumed that cop-killers wouldn't be captured alive. (And CO's don't carry guns in prison, obviously)

Not a big fan of "hate crimes" legislation, but there's always special classes of victims. And special classes of defendants, too.

87 Vickers and Jimmy Stewart would understand each other perfectly.

Different eras, different temperments, but men who knew right from wrong and acted on it.

And I think Stewart flew in B-17's but I could be wrong. He was also a natural leader of men. Some men are like that, other men gravitate to them because they are confident without being abrasive.

There's a book that was written a few years ago that focused strictly on Jimmy Stewart's military career (the author and title escape me at the moment, and I'm too lazy to bing it). I read a couple of chapters in the bookstore and......dood was a total badass, who went through some seriously hairy shit during the war.

93 It's funny with me. Benadryl used to work nicely as well as some of the other sedating antihistamines. But now, it does nothing. In fact, it trigger some sort of near "restless legs" condition (and arms too, sometimes).

It may be the medications I'm on for this stupid arthritis, or maybe just some change in me somehow.

Hell, Ambien won't phase me, and even Ativan won't do much unless the dose is pretty high, too high for me to want to try.

The sleep disturbance is due to this stupid RA of course. But somehow, when my brain finally decides to throw the sleep switch, I'll be out, but nothing will do it until it decides to throw it.

Yup, she just turned 1 yr old yesterday. I haven't weighed her recently, but I'd guess she weighs about 110-120lbs. She is stronger than I am nearly.
The why part, I've wanted a Great Dane since I was a little kid. They're cool! Also very smart and funny and fiercely protective. I also like the challenge of training a giant breed dog. It makes me feel like a bad ass.

Larger doggehs are immune to a lot of problematic human/doggeh interactions. If you step on one, it's likely to complain -- but not to bite you. If you shove it somewhere, it'll likely just accept the shoving. They don't circle around to sneak up behind you because they know you'll notice.

284 eleven, I totally get that. They aren't for everyone. I totally get the attraction of a cute little lapdog, but as has been said already, a lot of them never shut the hell up and bark constantly. Mine is quiet umless she hears a knock at the door and then goes into guard dog mode.

The poop thing doesn't bother me bc she is the first dog I have ever owned so I have nothing to compare the quantity to. It just seems normal. The slobber is only an issue after she drinks water and I just wipe her mouth down to prevent the drool from getting on me or furniture.

Probably the only thing that bothers me is when she knocks me down. I look at her and think "Why is this small horse living inside my house with me?" Even then I can't be mad bc she does it accidentally. She thinks of herself as a lapdog and literally tries to sit on my lap. She winds up crushing my legs and Inhave to shove her off. She has no sense of her size, speed, or strength.

Here watch this video. MisHum sent it to me bc he is a total sweetheart. It's the first video about the little girl learning to walk again.

309 272 I read somewhere that Everest isn't too bad, provided you're a seasoned climber and come prepared. The problem is that it's almost gotten too easy, to the point where inexperienced climbers think that they can handle it. They get into trouble and things go south.

Posted by: Colorado Alex

the book "into thin air" emphasized that the traffic on the mountain is much of what creates the danger. There are choke points where only one climber can pass at a time, and they are not short passages. So waiting times at either end can become lengthy. Hours, IIRC.

Since weather is always iffy, it's the wait that can end up killing you.

And there's no one to meter the traffic or set a schedule.

I'm already getting hip issues. I already know
at some point in the future, surgery is coming. It is not debilitating

I tried every over-the-counter remedy there is for my knees. I would have pain and swelling in my right knee (surgery for torn meniscus years ago) so bad I could barely walk, especially when it was cold and rainy.

Someone suggested taking turmeric every day, and I bought Nature's Bounty at Kroger, and instead of the one capsule per day recommended, began taking two. That was about two years ago. No more swelling. No more pain, unless I'm in heels all day. It's been like a miracle.

The owners began swirling around, 2 in front and one behind. My dog freaked out and jumped in front of me, as one of them reached for their hip. This allowed me to not draw as my girl had it covered. I would hate to think of the legal trouble if I had been forced to draw, or worse, shoot these beaners.

364 Last night, I was bemoaning the fact that the little Nissan Diesel engine I had been tinkering with seemed to have a bad camshaft. Mike Hammer sensibly asked if I had checked the cam lift. So today, I did, using a dial indicator with a magnetic base.

Valve #1, which is the exhaust valve for #1 cylinder, had zero lift. All the others ran from about .280 to .310, and slop in the tappet adjustments could account for at least half of the difference. But cam lobe #1 was not flat! Close inspection revealed that when I put the rocker arm shaft and push rods in, somehow the bottom of that push got seated on a ledge in the block, and not in the lifter. Set that right, and #1 was back at about .300" lift.

I buttoned it up again, and hooked up battery and fuel lines. It did start and run, and sounded like it was indeed hitting on all four cylinders, and the nasty banging was gone. But it won't idle down, and surges something fierce. And since it was standing on a steel table, on its oil pan and a block of wood, that surging caused it to rock to and fro alarmingly. I ran it twice, for maybe 10 seconds each time, and the surge showed no signs of abating. Seems like a fuel-delivery issue. I packed it in, since there was simply too much risk of it taking a dive off the table, or rocking in such a way as to entangle me in the gear teeth on the exposed flywheel, and that would hurt.

So, no, it won't go to scrap, yay! But I can't find the transmission that belongs to it. If I had the transmission, I'd dummy it up in an old car chassis I use as a test stand, hook up a radiator, and really run it for an extended period.

Not that uncommon in WWII, or even earlier wars. In WWII you had a massive expansion of the military, so anyone with any skill was promoted through the ranks, especially as units started to see combat and leaders died or demonstrated that they were no longer effective. In the Civil War you had similar tales, where men would start the war as privates or junior officers, and end it as generals.

My former boss liked to tell the story of meeting a West Point class of '39 grad. The man had commanded a regiment on D-Day.

Also, the whole "enlisted as a private" thing is misleading, because some fellas were targeted for officer positions, and not having been formally trained through West Point or similar direct commission avenues, had to enlist first.

Which is nowhere near the same as some kid who enlists as a private, gets promoted to corporal, then sergeant, and eventually gets a battlefield commission as a lieutenant, moving up the ranks that way. When that happens, folks above him in his chain of command are wounded or killed on the battlefield first.

Well, part of that is the conflict inherent in a Federal system, is it not? States have primacy in matters of criminal law, but gun rights a Constitutional matter. You would be worse off if America were a unitary state, or if criminal law were the sole purview of the Fed, as it is in Canada. (Provinces administer the criminal law, but the Criminal Code, and penalties are the purview of the Feds.)

Once upon a time, I'm sure, it was almost unheard of that anybody would be in uniform who wasn't formally or informally expected to assume combat duties, when the time came, and were fully trained to do so.

These days lots of people wearing uniforms are functionally no different than any other civilian federal employee.

Absurd, utterly artificial "rights" have been confected and crammed down the throats of the states, yet obvious, unambiguous, fundamental rights expressly protected in the constitution are trampled, wholesale.

YES!

That's why the aristocratic folk in 19th and 20th Century America would join the military and serve in combat units.

It's why Teddy Roosevelt and Kermit Roosevelt, served ,in entirely different wars.

George S. Patton was born a rich man. He didn't need to become a warrior, yet he did.

George H.W. Bush was the youngest Navy fighter pilot.

Fer chrissake, even the Kennedys felt an obligation to serve!

Today, all we have are sneering, louche, hipster douchebags who mock the military.

In 1941, some astonishing % of potential inductees were rejected for physical reasons (typically results of chronic malnutrition - small stature and weight-to-height - and of micro-nutrient deficiencies - rickets, etc.).

Today ...... if there, suddenly, universal conscription and a huge call-up ..... obesity apparently would loom as the largest rejection factor.

580 At one point in my recent trip to Vegas, I attracted the attention of a mime. Away from other people, I said, "if you do not allow me to ignore you, I will hurt you."

If the mime had not peeled off, I intended to say, loudly, "I consider you a serious threat from which I am withdrawing. If you pursue, I may take actions to neutralize you as a threat -- which may include your physical injury or death." If pursuit continued after that, I fully intended to incapacitate or kill the mime.

People today have no concept of limits. While I appreciate Milo, I would have loved it more if he had broken the arm of the asswipe that slapped him.

Slapweasel: the scene where The Hulk slams Loki is one of the best scenes ever.

I'm an old comics fan - read Amazing Fantasy #15 (1st Spider-Man story) when it was current. I remember Stan teasing us about a Silver Surfer movie back in something like '67. I've been a fan, and critic, of the translation of four-color superdupers in all media. Highlights like Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman (stories notwithstanding) and lowlights like the 1970s Capt America, Spider-Man and Dr Strange TV movies.

And of all the adaptations, stories, cartoons, tv shows, movies, of all those characters, I gotta concur...

...the scene where The Hulk slams Loki is one of the best scenes ever.

595 Slapweasel: Turns out it is "shawarma".

Yeah, that was a good scene.

Was just thinking of a scene that brought something new to a character (AFAIK - haven't read the comics in many years) - Bruce Banner's saying, right before he transforms, "I'm always angry." A riff on Bixby's worn out line, "you wouldn't like me when I'm angry," a great depiction of the transformation, and good display of the Hulk's power in his taking down that contraption.

Now y'got me wanting to see that flick again. Adds to the list, under Rocketeer (thanks to Jennifer Connelly gif & discussions above).

We did a 3 mile hike with a 600 foot vertical at Bryce Canyon and got our butts kicked. When we got home, less than a week later, we did a 3 mile hike with a 600 foot vertical to relax. Lots of outdoor/physical challenges intrigue me, but climbing to high altitude isn't one of them, for whatever reason.

Butchers are awesome for leftover beef bones! Every now and then, they have a nice, durable bone that nobody wants.

If nobody wants marrow, then you are set. Once, every couple-a months the dude has a leg bone that he needs to "get rid of". Nobody wants it, so I get it for ten bucks.

I freeze it and let the Sheltie at it, frozen, when she is good. He even cuts it into four or five segments for me.

I have to keep her in the kitchen, (the Sheltie, not the butcher), or else she "buries" it under cushions and pillows on the couch.

My passwords for Apple devices often include variations on the phrases "FuckOffApple" or "FuckYouApple". Mrs. Krebs is a huge Apple snob - "Everything they have the user do is SOOOO intuitive!" I beg to disagree and whenever an idly done or unconscious finger(s) movement turns the display screen into some half-witted concoction whose purpose I cannot fathom or whose charm escapes me, those phrases come to my mind and lips. Petty vulgarity is my revenge.

I had a computer security / disk cleaner program for MacBook insist that I answer their request to do a survey by blocking normal means to shut it down yesterday. So I surveyed them into negative ratings oblivion before closing with the comment, "If you ever block me from closing your product's window again with a survey request, I'll toss your ass off my computer so fast it'll make your head spin. Who the hell do you think you are?" Annnnnnnnnd... [ Submit ]!

Once I gave a 1/2 ounce gold coin for a baby shower, in January 1998.

I was madly in love with that woman. Then she got married to another guy, and so forth.

Think of Rose throwing the diamond necklace into the sea at the end of "Titanic".

I actually had the idea before I saw the movie in December 1997. When I saw it, I was mortified. I thought, "I can't do it now. It will be too obvious."

Then I decided that if I didn't do it, I would regret it for the rest of my life. I remember they were both kind of stunned.

I'll spend a lot on people I care about, but I don't know what is too little and what is too much and what crosses into showing off or being cheap. I went to a bridal shower for a friend and she opened all the gifts with everyone there. I wound up buying gifts that were nicer than her own family's or the grooms family. It was a little awkward.

For our daughter's Senior Show at art school nine years ago, four or five of them would exhibit their work at a gallery in Corcoran Museum of Art. One exhibit showing at the same time as hers was an "audience involvement" piece that consisted of inviting viewers to place Post-It notes on the wall and thereby create a communal artistic "experience". My BiL, neither amused nor charmed by the concept, posted "If you were my kid and after my spending tens of thousands of dollars to send you here, this is all you had to show for it, we'd be having words right now." I LOLed.

New York City plans to start enforcing a first-of-its-kind requirement for chain restaurants to use icons to warn patrons of salty foods after getting an appeals court's go-ahead Thursday to start issuing fines. But it's not the final word on whether the regulation will stand.

The novel rule took effect in December, and some eateries already have added the requisite salt-shaker-like icons to menu items that contain more salt than doctors recommend ingesting in an entire day.

The BS salt thing is a myth with little or no actual science showing that it is harmful and the FDA recommendations are stupid. The FDA limits have nothing to do with doctors either.

Doesn't matter if charges have been filed or not. That lautenberg amendment goes into affect as soon as wifey files for an order. IIANM the amendment was shot down once by the courts only to be repassed by a Democrat congress.
And from one article I saw the cops have not filed any charges because they said that there is not enough indication of domestic violence to file charges. IOW that "black eye" is not so black.

Right. The question then becomes, "Why was it necessary to do this?" Do you think these "conservatives" didn't understand the legislation they voted for, or do you think these "conservatives" knew very well what they voted for?

In other words, are they idiots or are they filthy, lying motherfuckers?

I take the latter position.

And we really, really need to stop calling these cocksuckers "conservatives."

731 >>So Republicans have been selling us out for a long time.

When I was younger I challenged my political assumptions and was PISSED to discover that most everything I'd been led to believe was a lie. I became more conservative as a result.

I've voted for Republicans for the last 20 years only to find myself in the same place.

So now I'm depressed AND PISSED off.

Good times.

736 Why is it that conservative voters constantly find themselves at odds with the representatives we've elected? Why must we always "hold their feet to the fire?"

The answer is obvious.

There's been a coup. Both parties are fully committed to realizing a left-totalitarian state. The people we've elected to office are lying to us.

753 Regarding the ants on my kitchen counter, last year I got rid of an infestation by using Windex. It turns out that ammonia is toxic to ants, and spraying Windex on them kills them as fast as Raid. But you have to be persistent, and get every one you see, in order to keep them from swarming.

I didn't want to use poisonous chemicals for fear that it would harm my cats.

This spring, I finally had enough and decided to buy ant traps. I bought a package of Maggie's Farm "No Spill Ant Kill". The active ingredient is borax in a gel form. The package contained six traps for about $5. I put out three of them on the counter, and within a couple of days the ants were gone. It was amazing. As far as I can tell, they only ate from one of the traps. The other two appear untouched.
