Quote of the Day I

This isn't some sort of technical glitch. The White House posted the full audio and video of Hollande's remarks, took it down, and put up this redacted version. They did this.

In 2016, an openly socialist Frenchman has a more clear-eyed view of world events than the President of the United States. And we're censoring his words. We're actually censoring a world leader who's precisely and accurately describing a problem, because it might offend some people. People who definitely need to be offended.

-- Jim Treacher on the White House's censoring of the words 'Islamist terrorism'.

Quote of the Day II

The Obama administration's effort to eliminate red tape added $16 billion in regulatory costs, according to a new report by the American Action Forum obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Quote of the Day III

Some viewers interpreted Bonnie and Clyde as a commentary on other issues, but Newman and Benton said they didn't intend it that way. As they wrote in an introduction to a published version of their screenplay, "[People] have told us that Bonnie and Clyde was REALLY about Vietnam, REALLY about police brutality, REALLY about Lee Harvey Oswald, REALLY about Watts. After a while, we took to shrugging and saying, 'If you think so.'"

Service Rifles Used by Militaries Around the World

Some of these you're likely familiar with or can guess but a lot are surprises. Interestingly a number of European countries use designs based off of the M-16/AR-15 though usually derived via the Canadian C7 or C8s.

Library of Congress to Stop Using Term "Illegal Alien"

Despite it being a perfectly correct legal term.

The Library of Congress has decided to no longer use the heading "illegal aliens" in bibliographic records after Dartmouth College students petitioned to ban the "racially charged" term.

The Library of Congress denied the ban request in 2014, arguing that "illegal alien" is an official term for people who are in the country without proper documents, students told Fox News.

That's when the Dartmouth Coalition for Immigration Reform, Equality and DREAMers, or CoFIRED, enlisted the help of librarian associations across the country to petition the Library of Congress to stop using the term, which they argued dehumanizes undocumented immigrants, Fox News reported.

The Pernicious Myth of the Oppressed European Muslim

Via Molly's Page.

Far from being mistreated, Belgian Muslims are one of the most pampered minorities in Western history.

Lest it offend its burgeoning Muslim population, Belgium has "de-Christianized" its Christian holidays. The holiday previously known as All Saints Day is now referred to as Autumn Leave, Christmas Vacation is now Winter Vacation, Lenten Vacation is now Rest and Relaxation Leave and Easter is now Spring Vacation.

Meantime, it's allowing the construction of massive mosques, including one with a 60-foot minaret that will automatically light up during calls to prayer. Authorities even let Muslim hate-preachers sermonize at the subway stations in Brussels, including one known to approach young Muslims and persuade them to go and fight in Syria.

Heavily subsidized by Belgium's overgenerous welfare system, North African immigrants have little incentive to integrate. Instead they turn inward, creating Islamic no-go zones divorced from and hostile to Western society.

Sharia4Belgium is one of most popular youth organizations in the country. Its young Muslim bullies go around harassing non-Muslims to comply with Sharia law on the street, banning the smoking of cigarettes, the use of alcohol and the sale of pork. Women who don't cover up get pawed, or worse, raped.

The problem isn't intolerance. It's the multiculturalist socialist paradise that the entire European Union affords Muslim immigrants.

As a result, welfare is abused by Muslims across Europe - some 80% of Muslim immigrants to Europe are on the dole, and more than half are "economically inactive." Muslims claim disability more than any other group.

In the EU capital of Belgium, as well as neighboring Netherlands, Muslims are roughly 5% of the population yet consume 40% to 60% of the welfare budget. Belgium spends more on unemployment benefits than any other country outside Denmark.

European society isn't oppressing Muslim immigrants. Far from it. It's coddling them, providing them a comfortable living. And they return the favor by disemboweling their gracious hosts.

Real Courts Start Pushing Back Against Campus Kangaroo Courts

Here a federal judge allows a student to sue Brandeis University over its lack of due process during sexual assault proceedings.

Like Harvard, Brandeis appears to have substantially impaired, if not eliminated, an accused student's right to a fair and impartial process. And it is not enough simply to say that such changes are appropriate because victims of sexual assault have not always achieved justice in the past. Whether someone is a "victim" is a conclusion to be reached at the end of a fair process, not an assumption to be made at the beginning. Each case must be decided on its own merits, according to its own facts. If a college student is to be marked for life as a sexual predator, it is reasonable to require that he be provided a fair opportunity to defend himself and an impartial arbiter to make that decision.

North Korea Launches Missile, Jams GPS Signals

Hours after North Korea fired a short-range missile into the sea in retaliation for ongoing U.S. join military drills with South Korea, they started jamming GPS navigation systems near its border with South Korea, affecting hundreds of fishing boats but not causing any immediate danger. There were no disruptions to drivers' satellite navigation system or air traffic, but warning messages were broadcast in affected areas warning ships not to rely on their GPS navigation. In a statement, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense said: "North Korea has been continuously disrupting GPS system since 7:30 pm [Thursday] and thereby interfering and hampering our military movements, which is threatening the safety of our people."

Researchers May Have Found North America's Second Viking Settlement Site

While there isn't enough definite evidence to state that these finds are remnants of the seafaring Scandinavians, The New York Times reports that radiocarbon tests have dated the relics to the Norse age (late 8th century through the mid 11th century). Also, the site's relics aren't characteristic of any other cultures that might have existed in the area, Parcak told The Washington Post. Archaeologists didn't find any flint scraps, pottery shards, or iron nails left behind by later European colonists or indigenous Canadians. Plus, the only other known pre-Columbian iron processing site in North America is L'Anse aux Meadows.

"Either it's . an entirely new culture that looks exactly like the Norse and we don't know what it is," Parcak said to The Washington Post..."Or it's the westernmost Norse site that's ever been discovered."

SUV Takes Out Navy Fighter

How does an SUV fleeing the police get inside a U.S. Navy base and take out a $60 million top-of-the-line fighter jet?

That's the question officials at Naval Station Lemoore outside Fresno, California, are trying to figure out after a Jeep Grand Cherokee racing away from a California Highway Patrol traffic stop got 7 miles inside the Navy installation late Wednesday and crashed into the tail section of an F/A-18 Super Hornet.

Navy and California Highway Patrol officials said at a press conference Thursday that two people were in the Jeep -- a male driver and female passenger. Both died and their identifications were being withheld pending notification of next of kin, officials said.

18 Hey everybody.

Bonnie & Clyde from 1967 is a fantastic flick. I can even kinda/sorta Pauline Kael's frustration that older critics like Boston Crowther, who had been reviewing movies for the New York Times since the freakin' silent era, didn't get it and dismissed it as "too violent."

I do think it was ridiculous for her and her followers (Kael was a great example of a pre-internet crybully) to get Crowther dumped from the NYT however. He was easily one of the best early film critics ever.

42 In the 1980s, Beatty also did the world of favor.

He essentially got Pauline Kael out of the movie reviewing business by giving her a "job" in the film industry as a producer. It actually turned out to be a do-nothing position.

By taking the job, and from what I can tell, Kael lost a lot of respect by falling for Beatty's ploy, which was actually to keep her "on his side" and unable to pan the flick he was working on at the time, which I believe was "Reds."

By the time she got back to reviewing movies, a chubby newcomer named Roger Ebert was setting the world on fire, as well as apparently roasting piles of marshmallows and eating them next to the flame.

44 A guy in my church did a brief presentation of a medical mission he was on in Senegal. One of his pictures was taken at the place on the African coast where slaves were loaded on to ships bound west. (There was a typically Obama-centric photo taken of this place, with Obama gazing pensively out the door.)

Anyhow this guy made some kind of comment about this being their last view before being onto the ships for a life of slavery and misery.

My question is: didn't slavery actually start when they were captured by Africans, often Muslim I believe, from other tribes? Wasn't that also when the misery started?

Ebert had a lot of shortcomings, not the least of which was his own overbearing liberalism. But at least he wasn't a crybully Manhattan hypersnob like Kael was. But, he didn't become really nationally respected as a critic anywhere outside of Chicago, until he started doing "Sneak Previews" with Gene Siskel for PBS in the late 1970s.

66 Military installations depend more on chain link and warning signs, than they do upon dedicated forces, trained and armed to the purpose.

On a large installation, a Security Police flight (shift team) might number sixty or so Airmen and DoD civilian officers on duty for a given shift.

That's to cover all the gates that are open and active at a given time, sector patrols, the K-9 troops, and then you've got the flightline perimeter patrol, which will usually be just one to three vehicles per shift.

And there'll be anywhere from four to a dozen per shift, tied up as the Police Desk, dispatch, armorer, etc.

Oh, and every patrol sector usually has to relieve one or more gates for chow time and piss breaks, too.

In short, I doubt that there were more than six patrol vehicles available to initially respond to any report, be it sensor-generated, radio call from another patrol unit or gate guard generated.

And if it was a radio call from the State Troopers, it had to go through their comms center, and then be relayed to the Base Desk Sergeant, who'd take the report and dispatch the available units.

By which time the Jeep was likely already halfway or more to the active flightline and adjoining parking aprons.

For a base to ramp up security to hair-trigger levels, you could assume that they're responding to a higher DEFCON level.

Or, someone came to their senses, re-established the Strategic Air Command, and instituted the classic SAC Security Police protocols.

Under which, that Jeep would've been a smoking hole in the ground well before busting through the flightline fence.

Gen. LeMay didn't just believe in raining hell from bombers, you know.

One simply didn't "play" with the security on a SAC base. It wasn't wise, and likely, wasn't survivable.

73 Kreplach, dunno.

I see no reason to assume that "reality" is very clear or understood to most of the MSM reporters. Speaking from extensive, personal knowledge not gained from reading the press or watching the TV "news".

And while I get the moderate level of wittiness involved, I find pathetic the comment by some (not you Kreplach) that "at least if there's a GOP president the press will go back to being a watchdog".

WTF? WTFF?

Uh huh. "Watchdogs" who will, inter alia, reveal serious scandals like Dubya's dubious TANG record, or the audacious arrogance of a president exercising routine unquestioned authority by firing a handful of US attorneys (who were mostly disasters very much in need of firing), or somehow make LA state and NOLA govt. collapse into a federal issue during a hurricane, .

Or this new, reinvigorated, "watchful" press will give more coverage to events of extremely limited importance, which were uncovered by the military itself and which the press showed no interest in (despite USG spokesman "teasing" the story to them multiple times - Abu Ghraib) than the Pearl Harbor attack received in the NYT.

Or maybe they'll make the public and even the majority of commenters at "conservative" blogs believe there was a "mission accomplished" moment for Bush, when there plainly wasn't (must not actually publicize the speech that was actually given).

117 Ralph, the biggest GFW in the world, tends to be a military Base Commander, worried about the thought of armed and dangerous 18 & 19 y/o cops under his command.

They condition those young cops to be so damn scared of ever snapping open the retention on their sidearm, or running the charging handle on their AR, that it's truly a courts-martial offense on many installations. Unless, that is, said young cop is taking active incoming, and even then, it's likely his judgment will be questioned, in depth and with rancor.

Whoever it was upthread that said they'd likely only throw diversity training at them, was closer to the truth than not.

Back in WWII, the Navy took about a year and a half to rid itself of timid "by the book" submarine commanders and other ship's officers.

Peacetime "white gloved" officers and the culture they represent, get airmen, soldiers, sailors and marines killed, every time we go to war, and too damn often even when we're "at peace" at home.

They'd be better off as the IBM managers that they are at heart.

A real, fangs-bared wolf in military uniform just scares the shit out them. I've seen it so damn many times, and I know a hell of a lot of other Morons here could testify to the same.

120 Hey, MisHum.

OK. Here's the story.

First...I was set to take a lady friend -- very nice, wonderful woman -- to see the Temptations play Saturday night. I got home from the full-time job Friday evening, turned my phone's ringer, and took a nap before having to go to my karaoke DJ gig.

I wake up a couple of hours later to get a bite to eat and change clothes. I have a text from her, asking where I am...weren't we going to the concert?

I text back, telling her it's the next evening. She's upset because she had her hair done and everything, and was looking forward to going...and she'll be out of town for the rest of the weekend. She's insisting I told her the wrong date. I checked my old messages (I asked her out via text), and I did give her the correct date. She doesn't believe me, and doesn't want me to talk to her for awhile.

Second...I had to host a four-hour remote broadcast the next day...a very busy plant sale at a local hardware store. After the broadcast was over, I put the equipment in the station van, proceeded to back out to leave, and got hit by someone else coming through the lot way too fast. I got some bumper damage that I had to tell the boss about, so he's not happy.

Finally, after getting the van back to the station and putting the equipment away, I got in my car, took out a key, and put it in the ignition...only it wasn't my car key. It was the key to the station van. I still had it in my pocket, and it was shaped a lot like my key. Now I can't start the car. I had to get help to get it removed, which costs me money I can't afford.

(Cue chorus of "Gloom, Despair and Agony On Me".)

139 I hate to just unwind here with the trouble with my folks and bum everyone out, but here I go. My father is home, but my mother is that nursing home for rehab after knee replacement. It was her idea to go there rather than come home -- she didn't want me to have to see after two of them. But I think she's regretting it.

Well, I thought dear old Dad was getting better, but no, I'd let my guard down and wasn't watching him as closely. He went up to the bedroom to put his pajamas on, then came back out to go into the bathroom, leaving his walker behind in the den. Well, I'll heard him holler "Whooaaa!" and went I got to him, down he was going in the back hall. His head hit the wall with a thud, and I figured he had just busted it wide open. Luckily it wasn't as bad as it sounded, and he seemed to be okay. It's a hollow sheetrock interior wall, and I guess that made it sound louder.

If it had been a brick or other hard wall, he would've split his head open. And if I'd got there in time to catch him, I don't know if I could've kept him from falling. I might have gone over with him and both us knocked our heads together and there both of us knocked out on the floor.

At any rate, this home health care physical therapist girl came over this afternoon and worked with him for about an hour. She said he seems unsteady on his feet and to keep him on the walker wherever he goes.

I don't think they ever figured out what happened to him the other night. The diagnosis was "possible TIA". Which means that's what they're guessing. Absolutely nothing showed up on the brain scans.

He's 88 years old, and has gone strong his entire life, and doesn't cotton too well to being looked after and all that. I can't complain, I'd be the same way and likely worse.

153 Captain Whitebread, if it helps, I'm beginning to think that about myself too. I just never seem to get to meet women, and when I do it's always either a situation where (a) it's inappropriate to approach them, or (b) I'm too shy/nervous/busy/otherwise cowed to approach them.

Maybe it'll change someday, there's some things in my life I'm changing that will hopefully help boost my confidence, and I'm open to help like Maetenloch offered me some time ago. But for now... well, I'm counting my blessings, which does help. Sometimes.

155 "One report I saw was the vehicle went thru a gate. Probably the only
thing the gate guard could do was throw a handful of diversity training

There are several miles at Lemoore where the facility's perimeter runs right along the side of a state highway. As I recall, it's just fenced. If it hadn't been a gate where entry was forced, an SUV at speed wouldn't find it too hard to bust through light duty chain-link fencing.

And way back in the day when they first stood up the naval air station, the Central Valley of CA was one of the quietest, calmest, and most law-abiding areas of the entire country. So going with light security was a defensible design rationale in that era.

For that matter, I am not sure the state highway was there in those days. Just a farm-to-market road.

If you are willing to cross perceived barriers, it makes you look more manly, and, simultaneously increases the woman's perceived value of herself: If he's willing to do this, he must really like me, I must really be desirable.

In the majority of cases I've been involved with where elderly folk were getting loopy and/or falling inexplicably, it's been some form of cardiac insufficiency a *lot* of the time. Sometimes a subtle form.

The thinker doesn't do too well without that constant supply of well-oxygenated blood. Balance seems to be among the first things to go.

Posted by: torquewrench at April 04, 2016 12:25 AM (noWW6)

177 Well, what happened with my father was this. It was the Friday night/Sat. morning before my mother was to have knee replacement on the Wed. of that week. He fell getting up to go to the bathroom. When I got to him, his color was awful (a "pallor" as they call it, ashen grey looking) and he couldn't stand and maintain his balance at all. With his color, I suspected his heart (he'd had a small heart attack years earlier and has several stents in the coronary arteries).

So I got the little blood pressure checker. When I felt his wrist another phrase came to mind, "cold and clammy". That's how his skin felt. The little thing just pumps up no more than it has to, and I saw the display climbing and climbing. The reading was 200/100 roughly. Whoa.

So, it was 911 and get an ambulance out there. When they got him there, my mother and I had to drive separately. When we got there in the ER room, his color had returned to normal. They have ridiculous security at the ER. You have to go through a metal detector, and my hip of course set that thing off and they had to wand me. Then we had to show ID and have our picture taken and get a little photo ID thingy printed out just to go back. And the funny thing is, you can just walk right in the main hospital. But the ER, no, it's Ft. Knox security.

They suspected a stroke, and when we got there, the doc was going through this stroke detection protocol, having him make faces, repeat phrases, then check the strength of his arms and legs on both sides. They didn't want to lower his blood pressure too fast for fear it could bring on a big stroke.

He stayed there for five days and they ran test after test and found nothing and sent him home on Thursday.

296 Yeah, I figured the SexMatrix had been explored in sci-fi. I'm not too big of a fan of the genre (just never got into it), but I imagine they had some fun with the concept.

I remember one notion, from some sci-fi story, of erotic enhancement via genetic engineering. You create a real, very enhanced in all the right places, female for your "use". And other things, perversions and distortions run amok....

Oh, no prob at all, Cap'n. Mine was not advice I'd follow!

In fact, I trample all over the rules when it comes to dealing with the confusions that occur in man-woman communications. My marriage survives, despite or because I don't yield.

I've got in-law relations that the guys put up with the hysteria in silence, and I respect that, because their women just would not be gainsaid. N.B., those women are *not!* screwing around on their guys - they're just screwy. So, "yes, dear," for the sake of peace and the kids, works for them.

I have thought at times to suggest to single Morons that I know of a lovely young woman, quite amazing Moronette-level gal, with a certain, rare self-awareness to question her own Female Assumptions. But can you imagine having me for a father-in-law!?!?!

The saying goes, don' stick yer dik in crayz, but I believe you just can't escape the crayz. (And neither can the 'ettes.) It's just the degree-amount of crayz you can handle, and whether it's sufficiently moderated by sincerity and sanity. I'm lucky enough to know Milady-love will listen, even when she's sure I'm wrong. And every once in a long, long while, I might be!

Any man that would do that is just a big baby, some sicko, and they didn't want anything do with it.

Well, one drunk joker was sitting the pews behind a women in the row in front. When they stood, he noticed her dress had gotten caught in the crack of her ass. It bothered him. They sat down and then later stood back up and there that little wedgie was still there.

So, the drunk just reaches up there and pulls it out for her. She turns around and slaps the fire out of him. He says, "Shorrry, Ma'am, I didn't know that's the way you wanted it", and just crams it back up the crack of her ass for her.

357 346 Butt at eye level still does it for me. When a babe gets in "The Position", ass up in the air, back arched just right, and everything wide open.......If you put me in a damn MRI machine and watched my little brain when I saw that, you'd see a cascade of neurons firing and going into near seizure levels of activity.

That has to be hard wired, and goes way back in time. I mean way back.

There are effectively two major porn poses -- "stop talking and just screw", as publius describes, and "eat me or something" -- which presents the pudenda in very accessible form. They both seem to elicit built-in functions in a majority of males.

Two words: Running water.

Barbarians don't have it. And without it, the nether regions, front and back, of either gender, remain majorly stinky basically all the time.

It's not that barbarian haven't thought of eating pussy, it's that they probably can't tolerate the smell.

Yet, we are wondering why civilizations always fall sooner or later to barbarians...

366 I posted this on the afternoon thread, but it more properly belongs on the ONT.

About a month ago I sent a bouquet of flowers to an internet porn model that I like. It was late at night and there's a pretty good chance that alcohol was involved. Anyway, she had a website with a wishlist, and I clicked on it and it went to Amazon. So I went ahead and did it.

A few days later I looked at her Twitter feed and saw that she thanked me, and said that the gift didn't include my e-mail address, or she would have thanked me in person. I was tempted to e-mail her and say, "Hi! It's me!" but decided to just leave it. I was sober by then.

I'm not a member or customer of hers. I've seen her around for a while. She doesn't know me from Adam. I sent her the flowers completely out of the blue. And I'm glad I did it.

So send flowers to your favorite porn star. It doesn't cost much, it feels good to do it, and those lovely ladies deserve a token of appreciation for their efforts.

The mistake has been made. Now you need to get past it if you're interested in continuing the relationship. If she's not talking to you, snail mail her. Nobody does that any more. It should impress her. Tell her straight out what you told us.

That puts the ball back in her court. If she doesn't want anything more to do with you, that's HER loss, not yours.

And BTW, I did two years with a thousand-watter back in the '60's. What blast.

I use a Razer Taipan. Gaming mouse, which means more expensive than it has a right to be, but with a higher level of precision than most mice. I regretted spending that much until I got used to using it. It's a really good mouse, and it's handled some accidental rough handling in my laptop bag (which has a tendency to bang on doors as I go to work) pretty well.

Oh, and don't go Cordless. Who the heck wants to have another thing that eats batteries when you don't have to? It's just extra complication and more things that can go wrong.

391 So frustrating. I decided last night to gather up all of my stuff for the GBA and take it to a place that would buy it. The problem is most of the cartridges are in a big ziploc bag that I cannot find after considerable searching. I used to put the bag in my luggage for trips but moved on to more modern toys quite a while ago. Yet the bag is in none of the places it should be. That represents somewhere between $200 and $300 as some of the games are considered rarities and command a high price.

Part of my mind that finds the worst possible scenario in any situation suggests it was inadvertently in a box of Goodwill donations. If I was going to be that charitable I would have given them the packaging too.
