When I see a story like this, two things come immediately to mind. First, how terrible it must be to be in that guy's shoes. He has some very tough times ahead of him. Fixed that at about 225 miles, and sold the car two or three years later with around 310k miles.
Some real weak points on some vintage Benzes though, are if they have vacuum systems for the door locks and climate controls. This don't sometimes fail, they *always* fail. PITA to fix, but modern hoses and clamps seem to really fix 'em.
Rust in the rocker panels and wheel arches is a problem, as is rust in the sunroof drains and around the back window glass.
So, if you get a good, (relatively) low mileage, rust free car with no drivetrain hiccups, you're probably in good shape. Do some research as to (if any) vacuum system upgrades.
Oh, and have a real, high-reputation, high-cost, absolute GURU of a Mercedes mechanic check the whole turbo installation. A fried turbo on those will ruin your whole paycheck.
Car is a joy to drive though. Brought back to near-mint, you can then move through seat-renewal (foam, springs & coverings) and other interior refreshments to make it pretty much an "as new" car.
There's a huge aftermarket of stuff for 'em, and the online forums can be VERY valuable to you, there.

The video stars right at the "ignition sequence begin" mark on the countdown, T - 8.9 sec. You'll see three flashes at first, that's three step "firing order", lighting up the F-1s in sequence to keep the thrust load balanced as they come up to thrust.
You then some smoke and fire rush up through the hole. That's nothing. That's the gas generators starting the turbo pumps. When the main engine get going, with 21 tons per second of propellant being burned, the downwash sucks all previous smoke right back down the hole.
Then it gets good.
You will say, "America, Fuck Yeah!" as that beast rises. That's what we used to do.

Yep. Rubber hoses and diaphragms in the actuators rot and crack over the years. Won't hold vacuum any longer.
You can replace these with modern silicone materials that won't ever give out. But getting to all of the damn things may require *extensive* disassembly.

I had some residual numbness and tingling after my surgery. It did improve. I don't recall how long it took.

I have no hands-on experience with Mercedes. My best advice: find a local non-dealership Mercedes specialist shop, the kind run by a former dealership mechanic who has hung out his own shingle. Most major cities should have one.
Pay him to check out the car before you buy it, and offer to make him your mechanic of preference for the car, should you buy it.
Also, if your un the VIN through Carfax, you should be able to learn if it missed any recall campaigns or has suffered a major accident. But if your mechanic tells you he sees accident damage, and Carfax doesn't, trust the mechanic.

You can get non-Benz replacements for alternators, A/C compressors, climate control head-units, and the list is nearly endless.
It's possible to completely de-vacuum-ize a 'Benz, with lookalike units which are actually electro-mechanical controls. Basically, just like an early '00s Ford or Chebby, which were some of the most robust bits in the vehicle. But, they look like and fit like Benz OEM.
One could pretty thoroughly "resto-mod" a Mercedes to the point to where all of it's known weaknesses are nearly eliminated.
Won't be easy and it won't be cheap. But the odds are, each of the applications is a "one and done" proposition, which is a hell of an improvement of "fix every 50k miles", as installed by the factory.

Maybe that's why I couldn't sleep in the hospital. It was the drugs. I didn't sleep that well when I was recovering at home too. Maybe it was the percocet. I started sleeping better after I was done with the pain meds.

SpaceX is doing some damned exciting things today. The latest version of Falcon 9 is almost as powerful as the Saturn I from the 1960s, but much more economical. And they're working on recovering and reusing the first stage, which will make it cheaper still.
They've signed a 20 year lease on Launch Complex 39A, one of the two most historic launch sites in the world. (The other one is in Kazakhstan, where Yuri Gagarin flew from, and which is still in use today.)
LC-39A launched almost all of the Apollo moon missions, and most of the Shuttle flights. Now SpaceX is renovating it for their own needs, which includes the Falcon Heavy, three Falcon 9 first stages side-by-side. It will be the most powerful launch vehicle in the world today, capable of orbiting a payload weight second only to the Saturn V.
While Falcon Heavy will not be as powerful as the Saturn V, SpaceX has plans for future rockets that will dwarf it.
Right now we're in a race between an amazing future and a new Dark Age, and it's neck and neck.

True, true. Worst approach I ever shot was into Sarajevo. Very tall mountains not too far away from the airport if you have to execute a missed approach. I broke out of the fog and planted the plane down pretty firmly. The Admiral in back came up and said nice 3 wire! I was determined not to go around on that approach.

I honestly believe that the true purpose of Esperanto was to make Romanian a mainstream language again.
Of course, any Romance language that uses "da" for yes has issues.
(I was looking into Romanian because I was plotting a story about Austro-Hungarian provincial troops from Timisoara tangling with werewolves in the Carpathians, and then I realized I was trying to write Dog Soldiers. I still think mounted lancers would do a good job on a pack caught in the open, though)

Fully operational Category 3, automatic landing systems should be absolutely required installs in every third-world shithole airport large enough to land a commercial jet.
And then find a way to force the indigenous cockpit monkeys to actually use the damn thing on any approach more challenging than Flight Sim, version 1.
Might not be the most graceful or comfy landings, but the damn things work and get the aircraft landed on the centerline, right about 100% of the time.
Some of the better updated aircraft's Cat 3 systems will sense the main-gear compression upon landing, and will deploy spoilers, thrust reversers and automatic wheel braking down to taxi speed.
At which point, control reverts to the weak-links behind the control yokes.
But yeah, the international aviation community should just ante-up and get it done. Won't be cheap, WILL be cheaper than ongoing weather related mishaps on final, flareout and landing.

The deal with this car was that I'd bring it home to look it over, shine it up & sell it for a neighbor. I keep 20%.
I charged the battery all day, then cranked her right up. Drove 200ft, then backed into my driveway. But the more I look at it and think about it, this is a really clean car. 250k miles (barely broken in on this straight 6 diesel), close to perfect interior, seems to run fine.
And super clean.
She reduced her price to $3000 (I would get $600 from a sale), which means I could probably get it easily for $2k. Maybe less considering all the work I do for this lady & dinners I take her.
I guess I have some research to do this weekend on Mercedes forums.

Maybe. It's sort of a stupid question, to begin with. How do you know that the "you" that wakes up is the same "you" that went to sleep? You don't. The only thing you know is that the "you" that wakes up has a memory of having been the "you" that went to sleep - whether that is true or not.
The same applies to the Star Trek transporter. The consciousness that appears would not have to be any exact duplicate. All it would need is to have a memory of having been the consciousness that stepped into the transporter and it and everyone else can say nothing but accept it as the same consciousness. Whether it actually is or not is a question that cannot be answered and doesn't matter, anyway, as I pointed out with the simple dilemma of the consciousness that emerges from sleep.
The physicist's argument that, because the original has to be destroyed, says nothing more about this whole question. I don't think anyone ever doubted that the original form was destroyed in order to go through the transporter. That was the whole friggin point of it.
And physicists don't know jack about consciousness, anyway. Consciousness is not even part of the physical universe, as things stand. Straight physics generally frowns on even the discussion of some notion of "conscious being" or "free will". So ... it really doesn't matter what quantum theory has to say about anything if the conscious mind is not even an element of the physical universe for physicists to examine.
Most physicists would say that consciousness is nothing more than a meaningless emergent property of the neural system and, therefore, there's really nothing to be destroyed ... other than a little bit of irrelevant ego.

I had no idea until recently that Peter Graves (Mission: Impossible, Airplane) was the brother of James Arness (Gunsmoke).

copy of them. There was no reason to ever lose a redshirt. Just

One of my favorites was one in which a smart guy was induced to show how he did it by Columbo making a deliberate error in explaining how he did it. Great way to trap smart guys. I don't remember who played the villain. Don't want to give anything away, but a Magic Marker was involved in the climax.

As an owner of a '73 450SE W116, I don't know much about the 300SDL other than I think they only made it the two years 86 and 87 so junkyard stuff might be a bit tough to come by, the biggest problem I have run into on mine is vacuum related, so many things like door locks and crucial parts of the interior AC system depend on it and tracking down a leak can be a nightmare, also, anything made out of plastic becomes pretty brittle after time on older Benzes. But, I think Leonard Nimoy deserves special mention. He is the only bad guy I recall Columbo getting visibly mad at. All the others, Columbo seemed to emphasize with, at least on some level. Or, at least if he wanted to fuck with them, it was more about being annoying and playing mind games instead of slamming things around and yelling at them.

Ceasescu, the Romanian dictator under Communism, was particularly brutal. AFAIK, he's the only Eastern European leader who was shot by a firing squad (along with his wife). But my understanding is that Not-Communists-In-Name-Only won the subsequent elections, and it took a while for non-communist leadership to get control of the government. It's one of the poorer countries in Europe, despite the fact that it has a large population for Europe (the big western European countries still have much larger populations), and an article I read a little while ago joked about how all of the "Syrian" refugees were going around the country because the country was so poor. Romania joined NATO in 2004, and while its military expenditures as a percentage of GDP put it squarely in the middle of the pack as far as NATO is concerned, the total outlay in US dollars against other members of the organization is quite low.
Neighbors include Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Moldova. The latter was a part of Romania until the Soviets demanded it (or else) from Romania prior to the latter's entry into World War 2. As one might expect, the two countries appear to be close. Romania's most famous historical figure (some guy named Vlad) really didn't get along well with the Turks. But these days, the Turks would first need to get through Bulgaria in order to pick a fight with Romania.

MeTV has run Burke's Law with Gene Barry, and will probably run it again soon. That is pretty good. Also, Honey West, with Anne Francis (hubba-hubba). They only made one season of Honey, though. The character was introduced in a Burke's Law episode.
Due the Man from UNCLE craze, they switched Barry's character to a secret agent and let him to James Bond stuff. It didn't last. MeTV usually runs them after a Burke's Law run. Not too bad, but it didn't catch fire.

That's all I can remember from The Rockford Files too, and I must have watched 50 of them. The appeal of the show was more about hanging out with Jim, and enjoying the atmosphere, than anything about the plot. Sort of like the Nero Wolfe novels.

Follow those Benz forum links that Bob in Houston gave you, do your homework and soldier on.
Oh, first thing, whether you think it needs or not. New fluids, stem to stern.
Do NOT though, "flush" the tranny. Drain, clean the screen, reassemble and refill. Under no circumstances should you flush a vintage tranny. All you're doing is knocking off varnished fluid which has formed around various gaskets and O rings. Lose that, and the leaks and failures begin in earnest.
But new fluids a happy Benz makes. Don't forget the differential and a full purge and refill of the braking system. Again, not a chemical flush and cleaning of same. Just pump the old stuff out, with new stuff of the same spec and grade.
Ditto the power steering system.
Then, put a couple milk crates full of new bottles of fluids, tools, various drop cloths and cleaning cloths, and as many spare parts as you can imagine, and take it on a decent road trip.
150 miles out and back makes good enough trip to know what the car is all about, and the full exercise of all the systems at operating temp and pressures is necessary to the health of said systems.
Oh. And a modified version of The Rule.

I actually feel quite at home here, and I am increasingly convinced that I will settle here. Luthier work is steadily picking up, I like the people and the climate, and I am getting continued musical opportunities. For last weekend's symphony concert I was asked to sit in as principal cellist, which was gratifyingly well received by the rest of the orchestra.
Now all I need to do is meet some nice girl... 8-)

So I bought another SSD and they cloned I the defective drive. Problem solved, but I was amazed. I mean, they cloned it exactly. The same tabs that had been open when it crashed even opened up when I started the browser. Everything the same, saved passwords, everything. And it works fine. But somehow the source disk wouldn't boot.

Do you love it? I really like mine. My dream would be the SL model, but I really like my car. The SL models are crazy expensive. But I got the 550 instead of the 350, it has the bigger engine. It's really fun to drive.

I'm pretty well cured of my Teutonic Transport fixation, but if I won a good lotto, I'd need a warehouse for the resulting collection thereof.
For now, I'll stay content with the F-150 that gets me around.

Had to reload the OS on the laptop earlier this week. Smooth, I keep very little actual data on the computer, so not a lot of hassle.
But ...... seems a solitary driver has failed to reload (network controller), so no wireless. It's an older ASUS, but works perfectly and I have no need for more "capability" on it - just need the software to work.
Haven't called ASUS yet, any suggestions? Drivers were/are on a CD that came with it, had to insert it as part of the overall set-up process. Just re-insert the driver CD, see if the system picks up that $*@)#*#!! missing driver?

Absolutely. Nicest car I've ever owned, and I've had a lot of cars. Lol.
I bought the C300 because it was a newer model than the E series which hadn't been updated yet. It's the same styling as the SL series, with the same nose and grill facia.
I'd prefer a V6 at least but the turbo 4 makes a ton of power, so it's not hard to get out in front of things. Handles great, feels solid, no gaps, no noise, rides very smooth. My only complaint is the windshield wipers suck and the car seems to fog up if you dare breathe. The defrost sucks in the front. You have to blast the defrost at Hades temperature to clear the windshield. Which runs me out of the car in ten seconds.
But that's a winter only thing, thank god. I'm definitely eyeballing the SL series too. Such a pretty car.

Edison hired a lot of "top men" to work for him. Then he promoted himself like P.T. Barnum.

I'm glad you like yours. I haven't had the defroster problems. I think mine has the V8 engine.
The only complaint I would have is its hard to see out the back window. It's a convertible. I tinted the windows. The front windows are illegal, I've been lucky so far.
It's really fun to drive on an empty back road.
My husband won't ever buy the fancy SL model unless he wins the lotto. I'm lucky he bought me the Mercedes at all.

Definitely didn't know that. I'll look into it. There is just something weird about the angle of the windsheild and the proximity to the heat from breath or damp hair or whatever. The Windows all fog quickly and the defrost won't clear it unless you run it full blast like a furnace. Anything that would prevent that would be a god send. Thx!

Local. SysQuick in Parkville. Great guys, I also drop off all my outdated computers and computer stuff with them, they rehab it and give it to poor school kids for free. Old computer stuff reproduces like rabbits in closets and drawers. They put it to use for those that can use it.

Chi (and AlaBAMA) - on my beloved first car, a VW bug, I used the FogX on the inside glass. I recall it worked well. And this was mid-Atlantic, so actual sorta winter, etc., so it mattered.
Great in snow, that car. Though the "heating" was, well, sort of theoretical. Used to have to have to put on the heavy clothes driving back from late night hockey games. And then there was the really cold night the billionaire boss was wearing only his suit, and I was providing the ride home after work. Though generally he loved riding in that car. Just not that night.

I remember when those were happening. I was scared. I just read an article the police matched a DNA sample from a night stalker murder victim in San Francisco to a second suspect. Apparently there were two different DNA samples on something.
The person who had to have been at the murder was a juvenile at the time. I'm not sure if they arrested the person yet.

Anyway, it was Westinghouse who was the big boy employing and paying them all.
The AC vs DC, Tesla vs Edison wars were epic. The electric chair came about in large part because Edison wanted AC to be associated with killing people. That's no joke.
The first electrocution was a botched up thing using a Westinghouse machine for a generator. Westinghouse would not sell one himself for that purpose, but they finagled one second hand somehow.
Edison had his good points, but he was also one ruthless SOB. And be glad Westinghouse won out. AC was the only way to have long distance transmission, allowing for a massive generator plants supplying far off and wide loads.

Usually cut off the 101 at Zaca Mesa Road, then north on whatever it is up to the big valley (Santa Maria valley?), over to Cambria or Kenneth Volk then back to the 101 and on north (yes I know the area in terms of wineries more than road names or actual geographical names).
Years ago, with a previous companion, I exited off the 101 on a very narrow old road - we drove past quite a few small old oil operations (equipment yards, a few walking sticks), very scenic small little valleys with veggies planted, not just vineyards. Have never been able to find it, or ID it on a map, since.

That is weird. I think that would point to a firmware issue on the drive.
There's a hardware issue somewhere too, but I've decided I can live with it.
My computer was hand built by a good friend of mine about 6 years ago to be a top end gaming machine. A couple of years ago he gave it to me when he built a new one, but it's still a better machine than I could buy today without spending a grand or more.
It has a gen 1 I-7 quad core processor, they're up to gen 6 or 7 now. The board was top of the line then, the technician told me he visually inspected it for damage and didn't see any, and "on that board I would have". NVIDA 360, 370 ish graphics card (I don't need any more than that), 16 GB RAM.
Here's the weird thing. Boot it from power off, and it gives a "no hard drive found" error, then reboots itself from that fine. So, maybe 15 seconds added to the boot process. Since I don't power off completely much, I can live with that. I don't know why, tech notion doesn't know why, but there it is. As I said, no big deal.

They shredded his arguments, and they were nonsense. Edison was truly made a fool of, and really made a fool of himself for making whatever claims he made.
But, he was Edison and so whatever he said, no matter that it was just proved wrong, was right, so the judge agreed with him. Or something like that.

I haven't joined a team, prefer the pick-up scrimmages (which can be very good, we even had some young IHL guys come a few times once when they were renting a beach house here one August, and though the mix varies tremendously week to week, we've had Div I and Div II former players as well).
But is fun to beat or match a 20-something (well, at least a few times in a session). And now I might be one of the oldest guys skating, but until a few years we had a Finnish guy in his mid-80s who was a regular. When he wouldn't show, there would be half-serious jokes about "hmm, hope Saki is OK" - as in ..... ALIVE.
He was born in 1925. I finally asked him what he did in the war (1940 Winter War, with the Soviets). He said he and the other "young" guys got old rifles and guarded bridges in the rear, but his older brothers were on skis and snow-shoes up in the forest fighting Stalin's finest.

It was Tesla. He partnered with Westinghouse. When they finally won their battle against Edison and Morgan, Westinghouse told Tesla that he couldn't go ahead since Tesla's royalties would cost too much. So Tesla signed all ownership over his AC circuits to Westinghouse ... and made Westinghouse a fortune. But Tesla did it just to keep up the fight for AC. He didn't care about the money - other than having enough to fund his own research.

The first execution was Kemmler, and they couldn't kill him with 17 seconds of 1000 volts. Had to use 2000 volts. His skin caught fire and lots of nasty stuff happened, from loss of bowels, to boiling of internal fluids.
Like I said, people vomitted and left the room. The take away comment was an axe would have been better.

Yep, I think it's Zaca Mesa to Foxen Canyon and then up, my usual route. Need to do more of the Santa Ynez valley some time, come up over San Marcos Pass (and stop in at the Cold Springs Tavern, where one can encounter pro musicians singing their famous songs on occasion).

I picked up a six because I noticed it amongst the St. Patrick's Day junk and (1) it was cheap; and (2) on the top, it said "late and dry hopped / admiral, celeia, topaz, challenger, cascade hops" -- and I wondered what an Irish brewer would do with a Pacific Northwest variant of an English style that had fallen out-of-favour when India became independent.
Unwrapping this -- the Pacific Northwest has been brewing very over-the-top hoppy beers by using "dry-hopping" (adding more when fermentation was effectively complete, thus allowing alcoholic extraction of hop flavourings) and "late-hopping" (adding more near the end of the boil before fermentation -- this allows the more subtle hop flavourings to not be boiled out*.)
In addition, the hop varieties are indicative of a Pacific Northwest bent. Traditional English hop varieties (Kent Goldings) are not being used -- rather, newer varieties developed by the University of Oregon (e.g. Cascade -- which is derived from Kent Goldings but much improved for fresher use).
As an aside, there is a regional San Diego Style of high-amped hoppy brews using Science-y hyper-hops from Oregon that I find really tasty -- Stone, Coronado Brewing Co., and Ballast Point are fine examples.
The IPA, itself, is a classic English brew combining (1) high alcohol, and (2) high hops, in order to retard spoilage when shipping to the subcontinent. It's a beer that can better withstand being kept warm and in storage for a while.
Anyway, all the reasons to do this aside, how did it come out? IMHO, it's a train wreck, which the nitro gimmick made worse. The hops were muddy and muted, as if over-boiled, and the creamy foam made them more bland -- when sharpness was called-for.
* You typically boil beer for about an hour, and add hops or other flavorings at the beginning and along the way. The hops that give base flavor, bacterial resistance, and desirable chemical properties go for the entire ride -- the ones that contribute subtle odors, flavours, and mouthfeel tend to be added later.

DC feels different. I was fooling around with something, what was it. Oh a computer power supply. The standby circuit had failed (turned out this was due to failing capacitors on the mo/bo) and I just opened it up, plugged it in, and with some seat of the pants diagrams, began probing around with my meters.
I was oblivious to the notion of "hot chassis". Big heat sink things that were hot to ground.
I remember a sensation liking getting pinched hard, maybe stabbed with a needle. What the hell is that, I wondered. Then it hit me. 100 - 200VDC was doing that, because my hand was touching one of those things.
It's not a tingle, like AC and I didn't recognize it immediately.

I like cold springs. We used to go to red rocks off the pass. There are waterfalls and hiking trails. Not now because there's no water. I think it's off paradise road.
You may have taken a road that will lead you to nojoqui falls or you can get to Solvang by turning on Alisal road.
If you passed a guest ranch/golf course and ended up in Solvang that's the road you took.

Personally, I'll test a 120v residential circuit with one hand - thumb & forefinger. It's usually not too bad. But don't touch hot and ground with 2 hands! Current then flows through your chest rather than a small loop through your hand.

Second, it's a matter of frequency. There are differences in what it's going to do based on that.
The taser fires a series of pulses. It's really AC in that sense. And that waveform is designed to have the maximum effect of disrupting skeletal muscle. There is enough different with heart muscle that the sweet spot for disrupting heart muscle is way off from skeletal muscle.
But the key is current limit. Too much current and anything is going to fry your ass good.

I learned my lesson the hard way over the years. Trying to be Macho Man, not worried. That will bite you in the ass pretty quickly. If you survive, you don't do that anymore.

I was going to be Mr. Macho and work something live. Actually took several ooopsies to get that out of my system. One was a nice good high current arc flash in a meter, live off a 25KVA transformer.
I don't think I actually felt a shock, but I was flash-blinded. I had the sense to stay still until my senses returned. Being a big arc welding nut helps with keeping your bowels controlled when bigs arcs are going off.
They quickly melt enough metal to kill themselves. Usually.

I saw something pretty awesome once on the electrical panel of a drilling rig. Rigs usually have a generator "shack" (skid-mounted steel building), with one or more panels into which are plugged cables from the other components of the rig. Typically, it's 480 VAC, 60 Hz. The plugs are the size of beer cans, with an aluminum shell, and a threaded locking ring. Four brass pins the size of fat pencils in a bakelite insert.
Anyhow, one of these plugs somehow shorted. There was a brilliant flash at the panel, and a lot of noise, and several bright fireballs shot out, and went bouncing across the lease. They appeared to be the size of ping pong balls. Plasmoids, I guess. They vanished without a trace being left behind. The shell of the plug had a half-inch hole burned through, almost a perfect circle.

Most of that resistance is due to skin. Wet, it can go as low as 500 Ohms or so.
Of course, if you're in nicely ionized arc plasma, things get very different from that.
There are people who survived that. Think of wild skin effect. Ionized path around their body that shunts all the current around them. They have 3rd degree burns all over their body and nearly die from that, but their heart was never disrupted.
And then people killed by very low voltages.

The one with the auger was a charred mess. Coroner basically put the pieces in buckets. He char broiled, internal fluids boiling and spewing all over the place. Luckily a neighbor found him and spared his poor wife from finding that mess. He was in Vietnam and knew the smell of burning flesh and kept her away.
The second guy just keeled over, without a scratch on him. They didn't know what killed him. Investigators noticed the power line nearby, saw the pipe. Arc marks on the pipe and the power line itself, tiny little things, confirmed it.
He was found with a "smile on his face". His wife and family took that to mean he was seeing an angel or Jesus coming. No one who knew had the heart to tell them that was just muscle contraction to due to electrocution likely.

Pro welders generally wear leather gloves, and have insulating boots, and leather leggings/jacket as well. The coating on the electrodes is usually a pretty fair insulator, so if you handle the electrode by its coating, and don't touch the work while changing electrodes, you won't feel a thing, even bare-handed.
And typical open-circuit voltage for most small AC/dc welders is under 100 volts.

on the electrodes is usually a pretty fair insulator, so if you handle
the electrode by its coating, and don't touch the work while changing
electrodes, you won't feel a thing, even bare-handed.

That took some thinking. My guess: a capacitor would be comparable to an accumulator (like the pressure tank in a well water system, where fluid is introduced into a vessel with a rubber bladder, backed up by compressed air, also used in hydraulic systems). An inductor would be more like a standpipe, open to the atmosphere, with a column of fluid in it.
But both analogies are imperfect. Interestingly enough, the equations for ground water flow through a permeable medium are almost exactly the same in form as those for the flow of electric current in a resistive medium.

For the why, there's a certain period of time between applying power to a circuit and the circuit running correctly.
I'd wonder if the power supply is beefy enough for the hardware it's powering. A computer uses a certain number of DC voltages, and if there's too much hardware using one voltage, you will see weird behavior because the power on transient is slower than what the hardware is designed for.

Is there something like a flywheel for water piping?
I guess a large pipe carrying a large volume of water would have some sort of inductance to it - it's resistant to changing the flow rate.
Sort of like how wire actually has resistance, capacitance and inductance ... though you don't have to deal with the latter two much until you get down to cutting edge tiny circuits.

The welding table is probably well grounded. And "ground" on a welder is probably not many volts off "neutral" in the line. And the hot lead might have 75 volts on it. Could 75 volts kill you? With the current capacity of the welder, absolutely. But you'd have to have the juice enter one arm, and exit the opposite leg, to get a good jolt to your heart. And both entry and exit points would have to have a damn good low-resistance contact between your skin and the juice; a casual brush against a "hot" stinger won't do it.
I am in no way a good welder, but I love doing it. It's like having a tiger in your hand.

I suggested to WD last night that his power supply may have issues. My last PC crash was due to the PS losing its 12 volt output, which spins the disc in the HD. On boot, BIOS said, "no HD detected".

A gaming PC is particularly likely to encounter this, due to use of power hungry gaming hardware.
It depends on the skill of the builder if they spec'd the right size power supply given the hardware.
Also, power supplies will degrade over time, so something that was just sufficient when brand new may become marginal after 5~10 years of operation.

Pressure = voltage, flow rate (gpm) = current. For inductance you want something that gives back pressure against a change in flow.
The inertia of the fluid itself is the biggest thing that gives that effect.
Luckily, electrons are very light. They are what "moves" and flows in most things. Now, if it were protons that were moving to carry the current, then a significant amount of the mass of the conductor would be moving, just like water in a pipe.
You would get these inertial effects with electric currents! But as it, it is the magnetic regime, the inductance, that gives the most noticeable inertia like effect with electric systems.

At one point, we were rolling around carts with 16 video modulators and 15 video demodulators, along with a combiner or splitter -- and we were getting complaints from some sensitive individuals of a "tingle" when they were handling certain carts. We spent DAYS tracking that crap down.

Was working on a computer system in a rack. Lots of hardware with exotic power needs, like 48V, 3-phase power, in addition to the standard 3.3V, 5V, 12V. .
There was a special power supply for the 3-phase at the bottom of the rack.
When it came time to test the 3-phase power ... I noticed that touching a particular screw would give a strong tingle.
I let the senior engineer know, and not trusting the judgement of the new guy, he walks over and just grabs the trouble spot.
"SON OF A BITCH!"
No, it shouldn't have been doing that, but we also never figured out how to fix it. It was only a particular screw, and various other metal pieces that were touching the supply didn't have the effect.

I'm guessing I am about 75% done the exterior walls. There are interior walls and wiring and plumbing to do yet. 13 sheets of T111 to hang.
My walls are mostly straight and plumb. The existing structure, to which they must fit, not so much. So compromises had to be made. The windows be level, at least. The door is plumb, the wall it is in leans out at the top. So there is an angular disconformity, as the geologist in me would describe it. A nice hardwood casing will hide it, methinks.

Yeah the worst critic is always the guy that built it. I am glad I didn't tile the bathroom at my current house. I always see the minor imperfections no one else notices. And having to sit on the can going over a reasonable tile job sucks.

I am using mostly screws. Robertson head screws, #8 by 3", brought from Canada. But truth be told, they aren't very good ones, made in Taiwan, and the sockets aren't spec. Fit the driver badly. Good Robertson (square socket) screws fit the driver so well, you can peg one on the driver, and shoot it in one handed with a power screwdriver while standing on one foot, with your other arm wrapped around the previous stud.
But I have used a few nails for places where the nailed joint is subject to shear or tensile stress.
