Overnight Open Thread - Misanthropic Humanitarian Edition (5 Feb 2016)

Good evening 'rons & 'ettes. CDR M is off commandeering or something like that. He has invited me to fill in for him this evening. It has been a long week. Sit back, kick up your legs, guzzle a valu-rite and enjoy.

Politics

We won't cover too much politics tonight. I heard something about an Iowa Caucus this past week, actually the past few months. Politicians were running throughout a small Midwestern state exciting Iowans.Usually excitement there consists of listening to corn grow and having politicians blow ethanol smoke up, well you know. It should be noted that our very own CAC and his Ace of Spades Decision Desk was the first "media outlet" to call Ted Cruz the GOP winner this past Monday February 1st. Congrats to Brandon and his crack team of highly overworked, unrepresented & underpaid volunteers.

Keep your eyes & ears open. Rumor has it that there could be a lot of Moron trouble in NH.

Math Is Hard

Look what happens when you don't know and/or follow certain equations and formulas, let alone know how to use a damn tape measure.

Old Sayings....

There are reasons why those old wise sayings exist, for example, one of those is look before you leap.

Or you can lead a boar to ice, but you can not make him skate.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Whats better, long bow, cross bow or Gatling bow? You decide.

How To Become An ONT Blogger

I hope I haven't jinxed her. The last ginger starlet I posted died about 4 days later. My fingers are crossed.

10 The day of the Iowa caucus, and I posted a rant about it, was a sign from God about ethanol.

The short-shelf of ethanolated gas bit me in the ass. A truck of mine, which had been sitting, wouldn't start and when I got it started with starting fluid, wouldn't run worth a cuss. Long story short, a buddy told me it was likely bad ethanol gas. And it was.

To hell with ethanol. Screw it. In the butt. Sideways. With a rusty chain saw. It's fer drinkin', not driving.

3 month shelf life. Damn shit is hygroscopic, pulling in moisture from atmosphere. That ruins it.

11 I just bought 7 games on Steam (they have a yuuge sale going on right now), and I'm a little annoyed that I don't seem to have a say in my download order. I bought them in two waves, and the second wave is downloading first (and taking its sweet-ass time about it, too).

Ugh, fine; I guess I'll just have to wait a little longer to play the games I bought first.

Incidentally, I used to enjoy chatting with the manager of a local restaurant. He once told me about the time he threw Faye Dunaway out of the place because she was drunk and belligerent.

"Yes, I do, and you're more than welcome to return when you're sober again."

His name was Garry; he was the manager of Duffy's. It was an awesome bar and restaurant. Terrific manager, too; after he died, the place followed about six months later.

57 Just returned from a delightful pre-Tet dinner with my angel and her YUUGE! family.

Great fun, great, great fun. Her sister, Thuy, drinks too much and too fast, and has the habit of punctuating her sentences by punching her interlocutor in the shoulder.

Her father, The Colonel, honored me with a few minutes' conversation over the bourbon I'd brought along for the occasion. We were interrupted by three of his grandsons and his four granddaughters alternating between climbing on his lap and throwing nerf stuff at me......

Her mother, the matriarch of the clan, held court from the kitchen, waving her knife around to emphasize certain key concepts in her discourse, slaking her parched throat with cheap-ass wine.

It's so funny - it's like someone, somewhere, cloned my crazy Jewbilly kin, and taught them how to cook.

Pretty good detail picture of the whole suit. The PLSS on his back is the primary life support system. What looks like a square box atop the PLSS is the emergency system, can clearly see the radio antenna attached to it. The gold sun visor is down because of the Sun's position is behind MC Alan Shepard. On Mitchell's left wrist can be seen the checklist of things to accomplish on the EVAs. Not sure what is sticking out of the left leg cargo pocket.

One big house, and everybody lives there until marriage, and then, they get a house as near to the main family compound as possible, and spend every weekend back together again, under the same roof.

I've thought something like a real family compound - with a large main house and smaller guest houses on the same property - would be an ideal balance of closeness and privacy.

144 If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

148 Speaking of games, I'm into Scourge of War these days. I'm kinda like an old fart so I can't do those clickfest games well. This is a real time command strategy chum role playing game. I have the Civil War games, Gettysburg, Antietam, Chancellorville, Brandy Station, and Pipe Creek. (There is a new release, Waterloo, but I don't have that.) Depending on your settings, you can play headquarters in the saddle. You can see only what your character can see (although you do have a map) and communicate by dispatches. You can command, for example, a brigade and order your regiments into different formations for fire and movement as they defend or attack the enemy on a fairly realistic battlefield. Just the thing for armchair generals.

"Homophobia" has been, yet again, redefined such that one is declared to be a "homophobe" unless they enthusiastically celebrate and nurture sexual relations between those of the same-sex!

They view hedonism as superior to restraint. They view homosexuality as superior to heterosexuality. Both are seen as subversive activities that undermine bourgeois society and pave the way for revolution.

That's a good idea. I've had a similar one for a while, that if I ever won the Powerball or otherwise came into a ridiculous amount of money, I'd buy a large plot of land and put an old fashioned manor house on it, with one main residence wing, and a couple of guest wings off the main wing made up of apartments for visiting family and other guests. Combine that with a large hall or ballroom for Christmas, Thanksgiving, weddings, etc.

174 161 I've thought something like a real family compound -
with a large main house and smaller guest houses on the same property -
would be an ideal balance of closeness and privacy.

Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine, Still Accepting Harem Applicants at February 05, 2016 10:23 PM (lutOX)

Some relative pisses me off, just hitch up their house to the truck and tow them out to the couty road.

OZ is a sev3rly transformed nation. The interiors, the rural seem rough and tumble enough, but the cities and government are just as statist as the Uk.

The Chinese lead the way as usual; find a low lying atoll and build it up. Drill down. Install a drop-in nuclear power plant. Install a desal plant above. Launch sea-bots that fish, scavenge, filter gold and minerals.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at February 05, 2016 10:51 PM (wCF3s)

221 The 11-foot-8-inch bridge is in Durham, NC. There are actually several low underpasses there, as the railroad line predates the city. The most notorious one is on the road connecting Duke University East Campus with Duke University West Campus. At the end of the school year, students (or parents) rent a truck to haul away all the kid's stuff, and promptly drive it into the bridge. Less frequently, long-haul truckers making a delivery on campus don't notice the sign until it's too late.

Note that it is HEAVILY marked, and there are even clearance signs with dangling chains to rattle the roof of your truck if it's too high, but people are good at disregarding things like that (especially if you're lost on campus looking for a building and have your phone and radio going).

I don't like Trump, but I don't think his supporters are bad. I think they are wrong, and instead of wanting to win, want other things, but I never thought they are anything but honest in what they want.
Of course that comes down to "what will Trump winning get you that you can't get anywhere else?"

I don't know about getting anyone back on board, but if Cruz looks to come out on top in the primaries, the message is. "we can get you some of that, maybe more in the future"

293 So, an Australia story in which nothing tried to kill me.

I went there on business and brought a fly rod. For the week I was there in all of my meetings I asked if anyone fished, and no one did. So, running out of time, I took to studying maps.

On my last full day there I caught a cab pre-dawn to a place called Lady Day Cove. It looked like a promising mouth of an estuary.

I caught a fish. I did not know what kind. (It later turned out to be an Australian Salmon, which is not actually a salmonid). After sunrise a girl commenced swimming laps across the cove. The girl was topless. I asked her whether she knew anything about the native fish and could she help me identify the one I had caught. She couldn't.

But, I caught a fish and saw a mermaid, so that was good.

Clothes make the man, and have a definite effect on your morale, performance, and self-confidence.

Always dress better than those around you - it will have an effect on them, as well. This is basic stuff, people. Even animals know the value of display for attaining social effects.

My advice - based on my own experience: If you're near a major metropolitan area, find a good clothier or even a good department store and go in. Look for the most elegant-looking older gay man working there you can find, and follow his sartorial counsel. If the establishment does not have such a man on the staff, leave immediately and keep looking for a place that does.

Look for the most elegant-looking older gay man working there you can find, and follow his sartorial counsel. If the establishment does not have such a man on the staff, leave immediately and keep looking for a place that does.

And, serendipitously I suspect . . . the phrase "Moron Horde" analogizes to "Mongol Horde," and weirdly enough, if you actually go to Mongolia, where they use Cyrillic script, the word "Mongol" written out in Cyrillic looks exactly like "Moron."

I picked up some embroidered ties at a flea market. Unfortunately they were grey Rayon with abstract embroidery in black and scarlet, and either boy's ties or very 1940's and short.

Hats and ties tend to fluctuate a lot over the years. Slacks and shirts not so much.

Fortunately, he was still able to have a good career in voice-acting. He was the voice of The Joker in the 1990s Batman cartoons. Which, by the way, were excellent.

It's weird, ya know...the cycles in every business...

Friday nights are slow - everybody's out getting their respective buzzes on....

Saturday nights are busy - families getting ready for church...

Sundays are busy....single working dudes getting ready for another week at work...

Mondays through Wednesdays - dead..

Thursdays - insanely busy; never figured out why.

It's not a bad business - largely turn-key, except for the lint-traps and the cleaning. Big returns, believe it or not.

I mentioned that comment to Dad who was down tonight. He then saw it and said it and the vacant stare in Bill's eye's reminded him of a neighbor who is in the early stages of dementia. He looks just like that and didn't before.

You heard it here first, my Dad thinks Bill is in the early stages of dementia. It didn't cross my mind, but now he said it that makes sense.

Might be a good reason to get out of the race if she needs to, ie avoid indictment.

There was a TON - not a metric ton, but a real one - of tamale wrappers all over the joint tonight. Taqueria la Michioacana has a roach-coach that always hangs out in the parking lot by the shop. I usually throw a bit of business their way - the lady who runs it can cook like nobody's business - but my clientele also tend to give her a bit of custom, and I end up spending an hour every night sweeping up corn husks in the shop.

Tonight was worse than usual, because she'd exceeded herself and made some really first-rate tamales...

There's a balance to things, I suppose....Circle of Life and all that....

Regarding raccoons: we live in a 'burb....part of a megaburb that is Silicon Valley....specifically the part that is hosting the Superbowl in two days.

One night, about 11 pm, I go up to our feeder street that leads to a major street so I'll get a light to make a left. Pull up (it's a demand light) and wait, get a green and start to make my left -- and notice, out of the corner of my eye, something crossing in the crosswalk when I get my green.

Freakin' local raccoons have sussed out how traffic signals work. He sat there quietly until I triggered it, and crossed only when it was protected.

Whenever I make eggplant parm, I try to save a few slices to add to pizza. A now relocated from the neighborhood Italian restaurant would make me a veggie pizza: Broccoli, mushrooms, breaded eggplant slices, onions, black olives and garlic. I like diced cooked eggplant and black olives over pasta with a red sauce. Let's face it, I really like eggplant.

I did a microwave Japanese eggplant recipe a couple of times that was really good. Halved the eggplants, placed them cut side down in a microwave safe dish. Added soy sauce about halfway up the eggplant slices, adding grated garlic and ginger. It was rather a long nuke, but I had to admit it was quite tasty.

And there's nothing like homemade babaganouj.

One of these days I'm going to make Greek-style stuffed eggplant.

678 Those racoons are indeed smart little buggers. And they will mess up pet water bowls outside. They "wash their hands". You put a water bowl down and the bastards will dip their little feet in there and splash it all around, dirty it up, and make a mess.

With that bunch I finally trapped, one time I'd left some cat food on the deck (I was trying to remember to take it up before racoon prowl time). I went out to shoo the SOB away. He backed off, but he'd already figured I wasn't going to really hurt him, just make life miserable. He stared me down, then took his little front paw and grabbed a handful of cat food and then scampered off.

At that point, I almost got the little .22 rifle out, but I'm getting to be such a softy I can't do it. Now, if some varmint starts threatening my cats, then he's dead, Jim. But other than that, I can't do it.

I trapped that entire colony over a few days. I got some traps and put them out in the garden where they were really wreaking havoc, and had full traps every night. I just loaded the traps up in the truck and took them way off, miles away where there weren't any houses and let it 'em out.

I moved the whole colony. I've seen a few since then, but they aren't coming up and bothering anything yet.

Everybody tells me that a racoon will only be fooled by a trap once. If you let him out and he comes back, he won't fall for that again. Ever.

My Grandma used to make fried eggplant. Peeled, thin sliced eggplant lightly floured and fried in oil in a cast iron skillet on a hot wood stove. They came out crisp, like potato chips. I was a very picky eater as a kid, and when my Mom found out I ate fried eggplant, she got the recipe from her Mom. She then made them for me but, being the brat I was, I turned my nose up at her rendering, stating 'It's not Grandma's!' I was lucky to survive childhood.

It's worse than that. There was a situation in Santa Barbara where raccoons had established a "latrine" on a branch over the play sandbox of a day-care center. The resulting shit contained a parasite that ate brains once it got into humans.

It took them several dead and brain-damaged pre-schoolers to figure this out....

766 I looked it up. Here, you can shoot (where it's not illegal to discharge a weapon) any nuisance animal within 100 yards of a house, homestead, etc. That includes just about all wild animals. Raccoons are considered furbearing game animals, and there's a season for trapping and killing. But within the 100yd, the nuisance exception applies.

That even includes deer, btw. You can shoot a deer out of season if he/she's bothering you, eating your garden within 100yds. Now, if there's a problem say with crops, you're supposed to get a depradation permit.

Now, the relocation for any wild animal is indeed illegal. So forget what I said. I did indeed kill them and they were all within 100 yards of the house. I get confused sometimes, like Hillary and Bill, and misremembered. Sorry about that.

And that relocation thing is funny because I remember a county agent explaining how to do just that with raccoons to some people one time. Take at least 10 miles away out in the woods, away from any nearby houses.

Geez, where I live (SF Bay Area), if you shot a deer or raccoon within any city limits, you'd probably spend three years in jail. And then be forced to move as activists picketed your house.

You can't even TOUCH a wild animal here, even if it is INSIDE YOUR HOME. Seriously. I know someone who had a momma skunk crawl into the basement of their house to give birth. The city animal-control department said not only could they not help to remove it -- "Just wait until she's weaned them, and they'll eventually leave on their own" -- but that they would fine the homeowner several thousand dollars for even attempting to remove or scare away the skunk family, the crime being "molesting wildlife."

Heck, in Berkeley about three years back, a mountain lion was chasing deer (huge deer overpopulation there) and somehow found itself about 6 blocks from downtown, and it was getting close to dawn and the lion was cornered in a church playground where there is a nursery school and kids+parents were scheduled to start showing up within an hour or two. The State wildlife officer with the tranquilizer darts was stuck in traffic on the freeway way back up in Davis, so when the cat started to try to escape the cordon around the church playground, and run off into the surrounding kid-filled neighborhood, the cop on the scene made the executive decision that he just had to shoot the lion dead with his service revolver -- which he did, successfully.

Guess what happened next? That's right, instead of giving the cop a medal for saving the lives of all the children, there were protests and marches to get him fired, for killing the sweet wittle pussycat! The lion became a tragic folk hero, and the cop a murderous villain. To this day there is a makeshift shrine where the lion was shot.

I sometimes think that the European refugee crisis is due to some shadowy conspiracy involving Soros and the EU, but maybe it really is just sincere, batshit liberals who really believe that civilized, westernized human beings are vermin, expendable, and that wild animals, including Islamic ones, are infinitely more valuable.

And liberals don't seem to value what they claim. They don't give a rat's ass if another lion painfully were to kill that lion, or if a Sunni kills a Shia. Not one tear would they shed.

I think they just hate their own countrymen, and their "activism" is a cover for that.
