Look at me, I'm the ONT! - [Weirddave]

So, I was working out tonight at the Y when Ace texts me “Can you do the ONT?”. For some reason Ace only seems to text me when I'm at the Y. Usually I'm listening to the podcast while I work out, it's like Ace has some kind of absolutely useless low grade telepathy or something. I'm not complaining, getting texts at the Y isn't so bad, there's probably some other poor open blogger that Ace only texts when they're on the john reading him on Twitter.

Let's start with a Miracle at sea

We all know that modern jets have ejection seats to save the lives of the pilots when they are aout to crash, but what happens if one goes partially off during routine flight operations? This:

A6_Landing_LT_Gallagher_2_closer-630x509.jpg

“My scan continued right. Instead of meeting my B/N’s questioning glance, I saw a pair of legs at my eye level. The right side of the canopy was shattered. I followed the legs up and saw the rest of my B/N’s body out in the windblast. I watched as his head snapped down and then back up, and his helmet and oxygen mask disappeared. They didn’t fly off; they just disappeared.”

Read the rest, it's a harrowing tale of men performing right past their edge of their abilities. We on the right tend to revere servicemen and women to the point where we forget that they are human beings, with as many faults and foibles as anyone else. Stories like this are why.

PHO!

There are 3 things you need to know about pho:

#1 It is a Vietnamese noodle soup

#2 It's pronounced “Fuh” not “Foh”. When you see a restaurant called “Pho King” it's a bi-lingual double entendre.

#3 Pho is what God has when he's in the mood for soup.

Pho.jpg

Seriously, if you've never tried pho, go now. Just do it. You're banished from the ONT until you do.

Creepy Christmas Ornaments

Hope visions of these don't wind up dancing in your head tonight.

Missing: The State Department Emails Of Hillary Clinton’s Computer Guy

Corruption? What corruption?

Remember Bryan Pagliano? He’s the senior Hillary Clinton IT guy who worked for her at State, and on her home server. When Pagliano was called to testify before the Benghazi committee he “took the fifth.” The latest Pagliano-related issue is that his State Department emails seem to have disappeared. Well not all of them are missing,  just the ones written during Ms. Clinton’s tenure at Foggy Bottom.

Zombie Vince Foster is not amused.

San Bernardino wasn't the only mass shooting recently. Nobody is talking about Bunny Friend Park, and that’s a problem

17 shot including a 10 year old boy and the MSM says nothing. If this isn't evidence that the news is agenda driven, I don't know what is. You see it in the dearth of reports about Chicago. I live in Baltimore and nobody wants to talk about the fact that on a per capita basis, 2015 is the deadliest year here EVER, beating out the early 1990s. Remember the 1990s? That's when a little book called Homicide: a Year on the Killing Streets was written. They made it into a TV show, you might have seen it.

homicide the movie tv ad.jpg

If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. It's one of the few books that I keep extra copies of , so that I can give them to people who have never read it without worrying if I get the book back. The TV series is worth catching if you can find it streaming somewhere.

Podcasts

Since I was listening to the Ace of Spades podcast when Ace texted, it made me wonder what other podcasts Morons might be listening to. I do quite a bit of driving, so I wind up listening to quite a few podcasts. Ace's podcast of course, that's #1, but also:

Drift Compatible Podcast It only seems to air about every 6 months or so, but it's worth listening to unless you don't like cursing.

The Stratosphere Lounge Bill Whittle airs this about 3 out of every 4 weeks. It's not exactly a podcast, I catch it on YouTube, but it's always interesting.

The Renegade Republican Don Bongino, a former Secret Service agent who ran for congress here in Maryland in a gerrymandered district, and came within 1% of beating the incumbent Dem. He talks about a lot of basic stuff. He's a real smart guy, if Fundamental Concepts was a podcast, this would be it.

The Ben Shapiro Show Ben is a bit caustic for my tastes, but he's absolutely fearless. He's the closest we've got on the right to replacing Andrew Breitbart. He doesn't have Andrew's charm, but he's got his guts, he'll go anywhere and challenge any liberal trope at the drop of a hat.

Anybody have any other podcasts they like?

11 Homicide was a great TV show but the director made me want to beat him into soup. (Speaking of soup, yes pho is good).

That's where the @$(*@$(^@# shakycam came from. That show. And he did this really annoying "triple take" thing that he must have gotten from doing MTV videos or something that added nothing but headaches. They stopped doing that after the first season but the shakycam was there to stay.

12 Hope for South America

Socialist presidents running cults of personality are part and parcel of South America's history since their independence. But from "Chavismo" in Venezuela, to Peronists in Argentina, the people might finally be standing up to these thugs.

15 I had to leave the Spurs game in the second quarter, but this is about Paul Stanley, of KISS. He's opening a Rock and Brew here.

he sang the national anthem, and it was wonderful. He asked everyone to sing along, partly in honor of the victims of terrorist killings.

He sang it softly and sincerely, and everyone sang along. It was just sweet and lovely. The showy "watch me sing" thing is so cliche.

29 Homicide was one of the best shows on television. I read the book after getting hooked on the TV show. Like most, it lost some of its mojo in its final year(s)...the departure of a major character was the beginning of the end and personally I don't think it ever recovered, but I will still watch those reruns over 99% of the new shit that's on today.

I remember reading Frances Gary Power's book. The U-2 had an ejection seat but the way the cockpit was arranged with regard to the windscreen rear frame that an ejection could possibly sever your legs at/above the knee. It was a close run thing. "... The fact is that even if every American citizen biked to work, carpooled to school, used only solar panels to power their homes, if we each planted a dozen trees, if we somehow eliminated all of our domestic greenhouse gas emissions, guess what -- that still wouldn't be enough to offset the carbon pollution coming from the rest of the world.

If all the industrial nations went down to zero emissions -- remember what I just said, all the industrial emissions went down to zero emissions -- it wouldn't be enough, not when more than 65% of the world's carbon pollution comes from the developing world."

109 So, the man who says he's a 6 year old girl...

He was once married and had 7 children. He was a terrible father. The last time he interacted with his children he threatened to kill himself on his daughter's wedding day.

That is, perhaps, the least disturbing thing about him and transexuals in general, as you will soon see.

Stefonknee lives with a middle age couple. He pretends to be their 6 year old daughter. He interacts with, and plays with, their actual 8 year old grand child.

He also fucks the "dad" or rather, the "dad" fucks him. Stefonknee talks about having to hide his erection under his dress when he thinks about being fucked by his "dad".

That part is important because...the tranny thing? It's all about sexual fetish. Well, that's not 100% true. There are, as I just learned, two types of trannies. There are gay men who are sooo gay they decide that they are women and...there are everyone else.

Everyone else are men who become sexually aroused at the thought of themselves as women. In fact, it is the ONLY thing that sexually arouses some of them. Others become sexually aroused when in women's spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms.

It is all one big, disgusting sexual fetish and women are being held captive to it in the name of "tolerance".

So "Caitlyn" Jenner? Yeah he doesn't just want to be a woman, he jacks off to being a woman. Think about that the next time someone wants to let a man with a dick who calls himself a woman into your daughter's changing room.

That particular case is less likely, just because coke is almost all water, so there's not a lot of savings in reducing the volume, compared to the cost of retooling all the canning plants. And vending machines.

I do hate the size changes in general, if only because they break so many old recipes. OK, a one-pound container of this and a sixteen-fluid-ounce can of that... but the pound is now 12oz, and the 16 is now 14.5...

If all the industrial nations went down to zero emissions -- remember what I just said, all the industrial emissions went down to zero emissions -- it wouldn't be enough, not when more than 65% of the world's carbon pollution comes from the developing world."

salami head crosetti and meldrick are my all time faves.

the first three episodes of the series are the best.

and the scene where they're at the cemetary when they can't find the body is classic...all centering around the black widow who killed or had her relatives killed for the insurance money.

The first season or so, almost everything was from the book, IOW it actually happened here in Mobtown, even that horrible murder of the little girl, Adina Watson was the name used in the show. I love Baltimore, but I have no illusions about its darker side.

I like the scene where some of the detectives are drinking beer on the street late at night and some thug is casing them. Belzer hold up his badge and yells "We're cops! Go rob someone else!"

There were imminent domain issues. I'd already moved away when Cowboys Stadium was being built, but from what I understand some particularly shitty apartments were able to continue standing due to some sort of zoning shenanigans.

But instead of making a nice shopping area/ restaurant scene near that part of town they built the new town center several exits down. Not sure why.

When I discussed this with a friend she pointed out that people were taking care of him like he was a baby, and he didn't have to make any decisions or contribute to the world at all. So of course he was happy.

The Governor's office has a Drought task force:
http://www.oregon.gov/gov/policy/Pages/Drought.aspx

Their main achievement appears to be turning off the fountains on the capital mall, and posting flyers at state offices.

The fountains were posted closed down with laserprinted signs on printer paper in plastic document sleeves on lathes.
The postings at state offices are laserprinted signs on printer paper in plastic document sleeves taped on with some sort of duct tape.

I was tempted to post notices saying "The state of Oregon has been experiencing periods of of lack of light called 'night'. Please do your share in conserving photons by not turning on the lights"

But lefties in power have a shortage of humor and I might never get a hunting license in the state again if caught.
So I can revel in the Algore effect, and understand that God has a brutal sense of humor.

400 Battleground WA had the tornado, just a bit north of me. It was not an Oklahoma type tornado but did do some damage. Surprised me because you really need a good mix of warm and cold air for those. I have a place on the river and water level is pretty high but not flooding. If it's gonna flood, I'd rather it do it before we move down there.

Stepson is on the Oregon coast near Lincoln City He stopped by this week and sad they have really been hammered. Lots of flooding and trees down. Some of the highways were closed so they could clear the roads.

I'm out for the night. See y'all later.

WD's probably gone by now, but close on the pho pronunciation.

V'mese is a tonal language, which means it's all a preposterous sham that they try to make foreigners believe is actually a language, as it's completely impossible for non-native speakers to ever really pick it up properly. Well, it's close to that bad, anyway.

The language has diacritical marks (little hats and accents etc) above certain vowels. For pho, there's an upside-down question mark thinggy over the "o". This gives it a flattish u "fuh" sound as Dave said, but more importantly a falling/rising tone.

V'mese is the only tonal language that uses latin letters, thanks to a Jesuit colonialist who liberated Vietnam from Chinese characters. It's actually useful when you're there, as you can "read" quite a few things without really, you know, being able to read them. With characters there'd be nuthin' to work with.

But oh yeah the stuff is (can be) great. Been eating it regularly for decades. When my buddy would pick me up at Dulles on my return trips home from the overseas taxpayer-supported vacation, first thing we did: lunch at a pho place. Funny, when our local employees would ask what I missed about the US, I'd say Vietnamese and Mexican food. This puzzled them.

I still remember the chicken pho (pho ga - exaggerated down-tone on the "ga" - chicken pho instead of the usual beef-based) I had on the streets of Hanoi. A little old woman had what I called "restaurant on a stick". They had poles slung across their backs - one side had plastic chairs, bowls, etc., the other side a big covered cauldron of soup.

They'd put down the chairs, put a little burner under the soup pot, and ladle it out as you sat there. Fifty cents, maybe. Outstanding. Had it for breakfast one morning.

Shocked the then-gf's mother one time, insisted we go to a neighborhood pho place near the gf's house (Ton Son Nhut - airport district of Saigon). Mom didn't consider local places suitable, clean enough for a foreigner. Well the place was not very clean, but the soup was very good, and the looks on the locals' faces with the foreigner in their local pho hangout were memorable.

Posted by: Zakn at December 12, 2015 12:53 AM (d2pTe)

Maybe it's not a castellated nut? What I know as a castellated nut, "castle nut" for short, is simply an otherwise-normal hexagon nut with slots milled into the outer face so that a cotter pin can be passed through to secure it against backing off. You used to see this on the front wheel spindles of rear-wheel drive cars, for many decades.

What you describe sounds like it might be a trim nut of some sort that calls for a "spanner wrench". A spanner wrench looks kind of like a fork with two broad tines, and on those tines are metal pins to engage the slots of the nut.

navybrat, is that uncle still with us?

Just lost another one recently. Father of a buddy (retired SEAL) was almost 93. Carriers in WWII, lots of other naval aviation adventures in Korea and V'nam. Guy was hilarious, and amazing - he'd just flown to Indianapolis, rented a car, and driven all over the region visiting relatives and friends a few months ago - by himself.

So glad I dropped by on Veterans Day and burned a cigar with him.

The Commander now is at Ft. Rosecrans, overlooking San Diego Bay and all the ongoing naval activity of which he was so long a part. Miss you, Tuffy.

From what I heard about the Navy in WWII, the ships could quickly become floating slaughter houses.

please to explain, yep - and of course it's impossible to demonstrate in this format.

First a falling, then a rising tone, stretching out the "o" - which as Dave correctly said is more like a flat "u" ("guppy" or "under").

As I said, my theory is that all these tonal languages are vast, elaborate put-ons, designed to keep outsiders in the vapor. Nobody can *actually* talk like that, and understand/be understood.

Do they not make coaster bikes, or three-speed bikes anymore? Ten-speed, and fifteen-speed mountain bikes use that goofy derailleur method of changing gears, which basically amounts to almost losing the chain on every gear change.

Three-speed bikes have planetary gearsets inside the hub, and are basically bullet-proof. The spacing between gear ratios is a lot wider than the multi-gear bikes, and purists scoff at that because you can't maintain pedaling cadence with such a big jump between gears. But maintaining cadence is mostly a purist thing, anyway. If the child just wants the bike for play, or running around town, a three-speed is fine. A coaster bike would be fine in flat country, too.

While a touch "immature", it is not "a foul" to behave in such a manner.

To avoid such disagreements in the future, there must be a "Declaration of Master of the Airwaves".

This Declaration can only be bequeathed to a trusting soul of "Musical Compatibility" by the Master of the Airwaves.

Should such a declaration be passed unto someone because you have to pee, your fate is in their hands.

Only after a reasonable time period of Twenty Minutes, may the Master resume his or her responsibility.

...So sayeth the Slap.

...which means nothing.

...so there's that.

Looks like Walmart, K-Mart, and Target all have a variety of 3-speed cruiser bikes for adults and kids alike. Probably Amazon, too. They seem to now have 3-speed hubs with built-in coaster brake. Back in the day, 3-speed bikes had hand brakes.

626 Honestly, It would be more like a grand + five-hundy for this house. Most peoples' houses are smaller.

That takes time.

My house takes eight hours complete from stem-to-stern. One guy. Over one-hundred strings of lights. One-hundred lights per string.

It would cost significantly less the second year. Especially if you stored the lights yourself.

But... I'd still have to test the lights and replace them, as needed.

More hours.

"On-Call"? Do I need to replace a section of lights? A whole $30-$50 tree? A $50 reindeer?

This is a rich-man's game. Enjoy your $300 electric bill! It is the least of your worries.

639 As a old Air Force weapons mechanic I know ejection seats are extremely dangerous. Never saw that video but the pilot did a amazing job.

640 She's a rescue. She has that spot on her nose because she tried to open her cage every night and wore-off the fur.

I was told that she hates cats. --Not so.

She'll chase anything if you allow her to get excited.

*Tsst!*

Dog follow Pack Leader.

She no longer has to "dumpster-dive" for meals.

She still wants to "herd" small children.

*Tsst!*

You have to catch her as she circles the kid. If you don't? She'll nip and bite. I don't care to see if she can draw blood.

641 I have no idea what I'm talking about.

So there's that.

Goodnight y'all.

643 G'Night, SMFH!

644 I love animals and have two cats who are sisters and have had them for around 14 years. But do wish I had a dog instead.

Posted by: Skip at December 12, 2015 05:18 AM (k0xxN)

645 Kitties are cool, but I have always had dogs. I like kitties, but it is more their choice than mine.

I can always get along with dogs.

That's it. I'm buying every one of you a puppy for Christmas!

647 Slap, if her herding instincts are causing her to herd children, it sounds like your girl needs a 'job'. Or at least some way to burn off her excess energy, like dog agility courses and what not. If she's play driven, Frisbees are also good.

648 Don't really like chihuahuas, Slap, but if you come across a min pin at the shelter, send it here. Best. Dogs. Ever.

That said, goodnight, good people. I'm gone for another week or so.

652 G'night, ColdBeer. Be well.
You're one of the best...

BTW, adorable pup. Sheltie? I grew up with one. Laddie had more prescriptions than grandma, and would "herd" us kids - couldn't tell you how many times he nipped the back of my feet.

And, to qualify - I'm sure there are nice chihuahuas out there, but every one I've ever met was an asshole. So, Yo no quiero taco bell.

653 Here are a couple podcasts if you enjoy space stuff, The Space Show is pretty good. One to two hours of space cadet stuff. Occasionally they do a "classroom" format but it really isn't much different. www.thespaceshow.com/

Another one for space cadets is FISO from university of Texas Austin. This one is about an hour or so and has people giving presentations of different space related projects and papers. Some of them are pretty detailed. spirit.as.utexas.edu/~fiso/archivelist.htm

Wrath of the Khans is a good set to start with.
