I put a lot of stuff in the sidebar. I don't really have much to say today, except the world is doomed and will not be lamented.

Update; Trump's proposal has more opposition than I expected -- NBC/the WSJ finds, if you can believe them, and you will be excused for deciding you cannot, that 57% of Americans oppose Trump's ban.

Suspiciously, the actual question asked is not reported. (There is a question posed above the poll findings, but I don't know if that's the actual question, or just the digest for this report. And usually a question will have a preamble, such as "Donald Trump has recently proposed...' This preamble can be written very negatively to lead respondents towards a desired answer.)

Oh, and this hacker says he's found proof of spaceships. But not UFOs -- America has a fleet of deep-space warships, he says.

Um, this country couldn't build a f***ing website under this incompetent foreign-seeming drifter's guidance. We're not building Enterprise-class space battleships.

49 I've read about this, which is more fodder for the "secret space program" conspiracy. There was something he found in the documents about "non-terrestrial officers" and the names of ships which aren't any publicly known naval ships.

I enjoy some of this stuff, but you've got to take it with more than a grain or two of salt and consider it just entertainment.

This conspiracy can run parallel with the UFO shit or be completely opposed to it (there are no aliens, it's all us). The idea is there were breakthroughs made way back and they were kept secret. And there's a strain that holds this is *ancient*, that there is a privileged elite that is in the know of the true history of humans on this planet, and that includes spacefaring technology.

Hard to match that with the other polls showing his support rising and a majority of Americans supporting his idea. Its almost as if, what is it? Oh yes, polls are BS.

178 The problem with centrifugal gravity is the coriolis force of rotating frames. Now, note this is independent of radius and depends only on the angular speed. It turns out most humans can stand up to 2RPM, with the maximum being about 7RPM.

This kicks in only when you're moving with respect to the rotating frame, but it is awful when are trying to move. When you run the numbers, you need a pretty large radius.

And you're thinking only of regular turds in space. Imagine explosive diarrhea in space. That I would not want to live through. I think I'd just open the airlock and take the coward's way out before I'd have diarrhea in zero g.

Or, like Clock Boy, it could be a way to level accusations of "Islamophobia" against people who express concern. "What? Muslims aren't allowed to buy cellphones? Are there legal limits on how many cellphones you can buy? Hater!"

189 "Trump's proposal ... "
________

CNN goofed. They aired what Donald Trump actually said, allowing me to make my own judgment.

Quoting (from memory, so the exact words might not be precisely what he said, and surprise! I can't find it on YouTube):

"We shouldn't allow any Muslims to come into this country until the people in Congress figure out what the hell is going on."

Trump's call to action isn't for banning Muslims; it's for Congress to come to grips with reality, from which they're all so detached. And of course, Cruz and Rubio take umbrage. They're two of the people Trump has called out.

So I agree with Trump and what I perceive to be his actual proposal -- for our government to get its collective head out of its metaphorical ass.

Most that only have heard the
outrage are gong to say no, some even if they agree since they don't
want to sound racist/bigoted. And as vicious as people are getting,
maybe it's not a pollster but a shooter looking for targets.

But
they left out "temporarily, till we figure out how to vet them, since
ISIS has promised to infiltrate the refugees", which is a pretty big
part. And Trump has already said there would be exceptions.

The
other poll that said 66% of Rs agree makes more sense, and many
prominent people have come out in favor of the general concept, with
more ideological and/or geographic terminology.

It is really the
use of "all Muslims" that got the nuts screaming "bigot". But it forced
open the discussion of the problem: "How do we divine which are the
good ones, and which will stay good?" along with "Do we want to take the
same route as Paris and London, with their openness and no go zones?"

Here's an assignment, if I may be so bold to suggest. It doesn't seem like ANYBODY has properly taken the Leftists and quasi-Leftists (establishment GOP) to task for having the nerve to compare Trump's overplayed ban to the Jews.

First, there's the fact that those bastards are as anti-Semitic as they come, have pretty much doomed half the Jewish population to annihilation via nuclear holocaust. Second, there's the fact that 99% of the people Trump is supposedly being so bigoted against would tell you to your face that all Jews should be killed.

Back in '98, Warner Brothers did limited theater showings of a bunch of their old films for their 75th anniversary. Very cool to see the old flicks in the theater.

Anyway, one of them was The Exorcist. In the early scene where Ellen Burstyn is talking to the shrink in his office, the shrink pauses the dialog to pull a cig and light up. The theater full of modern folks started laughing their asses off. You'd have thought they were watching a Marx Bros film.

264 245 Seriously, as to the making babies part. You do not want to have fetuses gestate, nor babies develop in anything other than 1g (+/- some small tolerance which is not really known). 1g has been pretty much a given for all the biochemical processes that have developed over the past billion years.

This is likely to be the main showstopper for human spacefaring and colonization of other planets, moons.

------------

^^This.^^

#1 NASA is retarded for refusing to investigate simulated gravity via rotating structures. They say it has problems, but won't try to overcome them. Instead they keep repeating the same experiments with astronauts in zero-gee we've been doing for 50 years. We already know the results. They're bad. Try something else.

#2 Even if we had warp drive, the range of planets we could live on comfortably is limited, probably to 0.8 - 1.2 the diameter of the earth. Too small, and you get low gravity effects like bone loss, muscle deterioration, swelling head. (We don't actually know if we could live on either the moon or Mars without exercising 2 hours/day to stay healthy. NASA has never done the experiments, though it could have.) Too large, and the gravity becomes oppressive. Our muscles, bones and joints aren't built for the stress, and we'd see the same problems as women in the military - stress fractures, etc.

268 You know, maybe I just thought of why Trump has made this risky move. I was inspired by seeing some new Fox polls. (From pre-ban).

He needs to peel off his competitors. The most vulnerable is probably Carson, who has no business being in the race in the first place. These are the people who are pissed off at the establishment GOP, for good reason, but don't feel Trump is religious enough. Maybe Trump thinks he can peel off the anti-Muslim sentiment that Carson has in his pocket.

With Carson out of the way, Trump goes to about 50%, and can chill out a bit on this kind of stuff. With the rest of the field in his dust, he's on his way to the WH.

All that complicated mess of signalling and immune cells doing this and that gets fucked up. They noticed that people seemed to get sick (colds and the like) in space from the very beginning. They didn't know if it was really some effect of the environment or something else.

But it turns it out is that immune system malfunction.

And 1/3 g, like on Mars, and certainly 1/6g on the Moon will not be enough. For long term stays on either, we're going to need artificial g there as well. And lots of radiation shielding. Habitats buried under meters of local soil.

Oh yes. I was horrified when I heard this one. The brain swells in zero-g, and pushes on the back of the eyeballs, causing the retina to bulge inward into the interior, making any kind of focus impossible. Vision becomes permanently fubared. It does not repair itself when they come back down. And this is only after a six month stay. It only happens to a few, but I wouldn't want to be the one.

Of course, we'd have a problem. In zero-g, all the fluid in the legs, kept there by gravity, and this something normal our systems are used to, pools in the trunk. The legs get spindly looking and the trunk gets bloated. All this extra fluid is presented to the kidneys and you start having to pee a lot until a new equilibrium is reached.

So that might not look too good. Our hotties would turn into little butterballs.
