54 From Vic's links reminding us all about the Chicago days in the late 60s -- I remember the ugliness and threats. For some reason, those days have become heroic in some way. They were nasty bomb-makers and throwers and almost destroyed a city, and other cities as well. When Obama was running, my kids were excited about a 'black' president, but I said that I was too old and I remembered too well the late 60s. His associates were nasty people and I did say something about Jarrrett in that I would be damned if I would support a slumlord's pick for POTUS. Now they understand my point.

88 Are all of the members of the great Yankees and Dodgers teams of the 50's now dead?

It's ironic that baseball was at the height of it's popularity in the '50's, the undisputed king of American sports and yet the players lived pretty modest lives(generally speaking - I'm not talking about DiMaggio or Mantle, but the Yankees always existed in their own special universe.) The Dodger players went on to lead entirely ordinary lives after retirement - a construction worker,a bank president, a typist, an executive, a bartender. Pee Wee Reese owned a bowling alley.

Try to imagine the guy in the next cubicle with a WS ring on his finger today. Or Aaron Rodgers or Clayton Kershaw or any elite athlete showing up at a construction site toting his lunch.

112 So, like last night, you know, there was like this reporter for Fox who was like traveling with the Pope and all. She was like this Pope isn't political and stuff he's totally about the Bible. He's all about taking care of people. Just like in the Bible. They were just in Cuba, you know, and everyone there is ... like poor. Not like in the USA where the disparity between the wealthy and the poor is so obvious. We have the poor and homeless but not like in Cuba where everyone is ... poor. And this is what the Pope is about.

Total paraphrasing of the reportage, but I don't think I'm off by much. I have no clue what this reporter was trying to tell me about the Papal visit. However, her surprised tone and long pauses in trying to relate how ... poor the Cubans are was what stood out the most from the report. That and the Pope was like totally about the Bible.

And that's why Communism deserves the condemnation that this Pope reserves for Capitalism. It makes everyone abjectly and crushingly poor except for the ruling bureaucracy. It's the ruling party robbing the country blind, the same thing that's been going on for most of humanity's history, except in the small number of countries that have embraced free market capitalism.

Posted by: Make America Great Again at September 23, 2015 08:48 AM (LXJ1e)

Actually the pie has been shrinking for quite a while. There's more actual money than ever before, but it's chasing a smaller pool of wealth. Ever since the geniuses in charge adopted this toxic Keynesian crap and exported all of our manufacturing, our rate of wealth creation has gone way down. As with Say's Law, wealth is created at the point of production when you make a product that's worth more than the sum of its parts and the labor that went into it, and selling that product is just a wealth transfer.
The lack of wealth creation that goes on in this laughably idiotic "service economy", combined with staggering trade imbalances and natural attrition has lead to a net shrinkage in real wealth. You can have a lot of money, but that doesn't mean it'll buy anything.

But once things become established in the culture, the public domain needs to take over, otherwise copyright (and patent, etc) holders simply become brakes on advancement by demanding royalties in perpetuity. Ideas have to cede to the commons eventually.

284 >>I have already ranted this am about that time. My parents were 'beatniks' who had the paper every day and allowed their children to read it.

My folks were a lot closer to the Cleavers but they didn't hammer me with it and let me explore some of the dark side. We lived in Princeton, NJ for part of that time and my friends and I hung out at the university whenever we could. Back then, they let the kids from the town use a lot of the athletic facilities and just hang out. Universities where ground zero for a lot of the bullshit being churned out back then and it continues today.

I got exposed to a lot of the left blame America for everything during that time. Fortunately, I grew up. But I do find it ironic that a good deal of the hate America crowd came from those with the most privileged of backgrounds.

285 Remember the commies were formenting revolution all over europe, in the UK, South America and here. So much does not get reported from that period today and when it does, it is rewritten to make the red thugs look romantic. Just loo at what a mess they made of the UK.

286 And the famed Cuban healthcare? We've all seen photos and i would not let my dog be treated in clinics like they used for humans. They were filthy. And all these Cuban docs who were sent to S.A. and refused to return -- they cant pass licensing bc their training was so abysmal.

Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at September 23, 2015 09:22 AM (iQIUe)

Quite filthy as most of the third world is....that's why you see people coming here for treatment of this or that but you don't see anyone going to Cuba for anything. Except Pope Karl Marx Frankie I. The idiots in this country who cry about how bad America is have never traveled overseas to a real third world shithole and seen it up close and personal. If they did they would know how good we got it here.

287 They've controlled the message for decades. Unfortunately too many people see the country through their lens. And when talk radio or Fox News comes along they have an absolute shit fit because they know any opposing voice exposes their bullshit.

I took one saying from the '60's to heart: Question Everything.

So I did. And when I started questioning the bullshit from the left, I started seeing through their illusions.

I've always said,

They told us, "Question authority." So I did. I found out (sometimes the hard way) that a lot of authority was authority for very good reason. Some I rejected, much I accepted. It's a good idea, questioning authority.

I also found that people who parroted "question authority" really meant "reject authority without question." Isn't language a funny thing!

Just like all those girls kidnapped in Nigeria -- a number of them have been forced to be suicide bombers.

Not that any of the momentarily caring tweeters have noticed. They've moved on, and besides, to acknowledge what's happened to them would to acknowledge that this is being done by Muslim terrorists.

295 Both my parents were born in '51 and couldn't be more different. Mom is a bleeding heart, Dad is more center right. I attribute it to their upbringing. Dad is a son of a WW2 vet who went on to be a successful architect (trivia- he was part of the team that designed the Reagan library). Mom didn't have a great relationship with her mom, so I think her story is more of a rebellion against her parents.

296 The Pope is from Latin America, which is rife with anti-capitalism and anti-Americanism. JP II was from Poland - one of the least anti-American countries on the planet and a country where the Church was persecuted by Communists. That's really what it comes down to -

JP had the outlook of Poles who hated Communism and yearned for freedom and Francis has been formed by liberation theology bullcrap (which JPII knew to be bullcrap). Both products of their place and time.

In the 80's we hit the Freedom Trifecta-

Reagan, Thatcher, and JPII

an ass-kicking, take-no-prisoners trio of freedom-loving, free marketeers-

who brought down the Russian empire, made their respective countries as well as the world a freer, richer, more peaceful, happier place.

After Obama's election, his people were crowing he'd be the anti-Reagan (until it didn't poll well), so-

if the Brits elect Clowny McOlde-FashionedCommietard as PM, we'll hit...

The Olde-Fashioned Commietard Oligarch Trifecta-

with Obama, Pope Francis, and Corbyn

a trio of dull, intellectually lazy, freedom-hating, jihadist-enabling, wealth-destroyers

who are reestablishing the Russian Empire, making their respective countries and the world poorer(except for their cronies), less free, more violent, and angrier place.

God may be playing one of his little jokes with this Insane Clown Trio.

297 Remembering -- my parents were so proud of the Skokie police, grim-faced and angry, defending the rights of speech and assembly. Classical liberals. ACLU defending nasty people advocating nasty things. Our job was to witness and remember the ugliness the marchers were advocating. Put the ugliness in the open so we can all see and judge.

How has it become so twisted and the ACLU fallen so far?

I think what they really meant was question traditional authority. They sure as hell don't question lefty authority and there is no more authoritarian group than lefties. They want to control everything.

Laws have to make sense. Once you get past the core of them (the ones from the Ten Commandments IMO), the rest tend to be just control freaks throwing their weight around.

I was born in 1960. I hate to blame the hippie and "peace" movement of the sixties, but the idea of cultural equivalence was big at the time, plus the anti-Vietnam war thinking blamed America for being the aggressors against the poor, peaceful North Vietnamese.

Once we abandoned Vietnam, there wasn't much talk in the media about the atrocities in the region, and even those that were talked about, such as Pol Pot, conveniently left out the fact that the atrocities were caused by the vacuum left by the US.

In the words of Soviet KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov's 1984 interview: "The results you can see. Most of the people who graduated in the '60's...drop outs or half-baked intellectuals are now occupying positions of power in the government, civil service, business mass media, educational system. You are stuck with them. You cannot get rid of them, they are contaminated, they are programmed to react to stimuli in a certain pattern. "

"Unlike myself, you will have nowhere to defect to. Unless you want to live in Antarctica with penguins."
