Overnight Open Thread (16 May 2015)

Interesting list but highly unlikely any will enter. 6 military leaders who could run for President in 2016.

Youngins Today

I don't think this lady has what it takes to work in a hospital. Pennsylvania University student suing school after failing required class twice. She even got a distraction-free environment and extra time for the second final. It's a weeding out process and she didn't cut it. Time to find a new field to study for.

Navy Budget

You can have an aircraft carrier. Or you can have a navy. Pick one. I dunno. Their description of the JHSV is a tad overblown though. Just because it is being outfitted with the rail gun for an experiment does not mean that it will become a permanent fixture on all of them.

School

W.Va students caught screening Fifty Shades of Gray at school. Evidently their teacher had no idea what the movie was about and she agreed to let them watch it as a reward for their good work.

Apparently everybody else *but* the US is allowed to have nuclear tech, according to the Obama Doctrine.

I've noticed that the MFM is hyping the death of Abu Sayyaf, which is a good thing mind you, but isn't mentioning the capture of Ramadi by ISIS quite as much. Which is more important, the death of one man in Syria, or the loss of a city which threatens supply lines to Baghdad?

49 Thrawn, since killing Abu Sayyaf seems to have inflicted a butthurt on ISIS, it might serve as a SQUIRREL for the media. In the meantime the Iraqis can boot the caliph back out of Ramadi and quietly slaughter a lot of jihadis.

At least, I'm hoping that's what the President was planning. If my only talent was trolling (and some here would suggest it was) then I'd make sure to troll ISIS, and in a way that helped.

50 Each Ford-class aircraft carrier carries a crew of 4,800, yet is vulnerable to just one lucky strike by an opposing force.

If it was nuclear. Or some kind of ballistic penetrater, maybe.
.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at May 16, 2015 10:03 PM (rwI+c)

51 Hendrix is merely angling for some of that sweet sweet Pentagon dough as a consultant.

Once BuShips turns the entire LCS class into reefs and explains how they can blow $7 billion on a gator carrier without a welldeck and not compatible with the F-35B. Then I might start to believe BuShips again.

If you really want to cut the cost of a carrier, ask if them being nuclear powered is really needed when their jets and escorts still need fuel.

I know you know better, but lifetime costs for a large nuclear surface combatant like a CVA are likely lower than a oil fueled CV.

We have larger problems with the size of our attack boat fleet, and SLBM platforms, which are aging.

125 If you really want to cut the cost of a carrier, ask
if them being nuclear powered is really needed when their jets and escorts still need fuel.

Posted by: Anna Puma

This appears to be one of your hobby horses, but you are completely misguided on this point. Power generation on a carrier has a lot more uses than just driving the boat. In addition, refueling time are greatly shortened/simplified, and the ability to store fuel for the jets is increased by not having to bunker oil for the ship's engines.

Finally, there are other uses coming up that will draw even more power. There is a reason why the primary upgrade from the Nimitz class to the Ford class is in electrical generating capacity.

Supposedly, only the first of the new LHAs won't have a welldeck. But, yeah, WTF?

And the nuke carriers free up fuel bunker space for JP-5. The Kennedy (CV-67) didn't have nearly the operational endurance as the Nimitz, despite being nearly exactly alike otherwise. JFK was supposed to be the first of that class, but budget cuts forced a redesign to conventional oil-fired boilers.

Anna, not sure about de-nuking the carriers, but trying to imagine the rationale for yet another hugely expensive "innovation" when (new carriers) when existing models do the job. Smells like another F-35 (without the excuse, cough, rationale of having to cruise supersonically and stealthily and defeat Moscow's air defense, or whatever).

It's not just BuShips. Seems there is an unrelieved string of impractical, wildly and needlessly expensive systems coming from all services.

I've commented before about the USMC F-18 pilot who said he and his mates are not at all excited about the F-35, and would prefer continuing upgrades of the F-18 like the new stores/ordnance system.

Oh, and the young USN servicemember who's part of the west coast LCS break-in crew (forget what that's called). Said - unprompted - that there was zero excitement, morale was terrible, nobody really bought the ship's rationale, and overall it was a shockingly negative environment for a task that usually inspires the people getting to write the manuals for a new class.

I'm shamefully ignorant of these topics in comparison to years of yore, but the first-glance and anecdotal indications are not good. And it seems systemic.

The GAO seems to agree with you (at above link).

I saw something on the TV a while back about the powerplant for the new British carrier (about 65k deadweight tons).

It runs on diesel at cruise (very efficient, but not a lot of speed), then has a big gas turbine driven generator for cranking out a large amount of electricity to rev up electric propeller drive for top speed. Very fuel efficient.

GuvButtPirate, yes, there's the "inevitability" thing created by poor choices having been made. And they've been "re-barrelling" some old F-18s to give them more flight hours, though it's too late to save the current fleet, which the pilot told me is "trapped out" (no longer allowed to do carrier landings).

So in a time of impending/increasing fiscal challenges (unless the Fed's anti-gravity machine *does* work in the end), we'll be pouring vast resources into fewer platforms that are actually inferior for some jobs, possibly the more likely ones. The same pilot told me he has yet to see athreat/intel briefing that's identified a likely scenario where his squadron would rather have the new plane than the F-18.

Again this is anecdotal stuff but ...... the cost per platform isn't, and amazing as it sounds all of us with some common sense and military and geopolitical background can evaluate the practicality of some of these things.

Posted by: Ricardo Kill

Actually, it was just the opposite. Lockheed was given a lot of latitude early in the program to bring the F-35 to production in a streamlined and efficient way. They blew it. The DoD ended up really cracking down on them to stop all the bullshit. This is not the Lockheed that built the F-104, P-38, and a lot of other top notch aircraft.

The F-35 in its various iterations will probably be a pretty hot ride, but

1) it's taken too long to produce/bring to active duty operations
2) it will cost too much per copy
3) there won't be enough of them

Boeing - McDonnell would love to get back into F-18 production. And an evolved F-15 to supplement the F-22. The F-15 K and J (built for Korea and Japan, respectively) is a pretty modern bird.

233 Regarding previous comment about the multiplicity of impractical and expensive weapons systems current, I recall that there have been quite a number of such problems in years past, when a peacetime* military invested quite a bit of time and energy in some shiny new toy only to discover when war actually came that it didn't work as advertised. The 1930s magnetic exploder idea and the Mark 14 torpedo in particular comes to mind.

236 Ricardo you do know what the TFX was?

USAF wanted a replacement for the F-105. McNamara declared the USAF and Navy will share the TFX. In the name of commonality.

The Navy got 7 F-111Bs before Admiral Tom Connely told Sen. Stennis that all the thrust in Christandom could turn that into a fighter.

The USAF got the F-111A, F-111D, F-111E, F-111F, and the FB-111A. While the Aussies got saddled with the F-111C.

Some commonality.

Both are 70's designs. They can be "stealthed" with treatments. They are not new or advanced aircraft. I love the Super Hornet but it's circa 1988 tech. The F-15 is great but the F-35 has it's radar and engine plus 25 years.

The F-111 turned out to be a great high-speed low altitude penetration bomber, with some great targeting gizmos, but was hardly worth the price of admission. The TF-30 turbofans always made the plane underpowered and unreliable.

269 Say what you will about the F-111 boondoggle, but damn, it was a lovely plane to watch in flight.

It really fit the "looks right, flies right" paradigm. And, it fit the need for what used to be called a "Medium Bomber" in days gone by.

I have no doubt that one could take a brand new F-111 airframe, equip it with the newest, but most proven engines, electronics, glass cockpit and whatever "stealth" modifications as would fit the platform, that it would still be fully effective in the modern air war environment.

Yeah, it was too much the pig for the carrier mission. But then, so were Doolittle's B-25s. They both rocked though, when used to their strengths.

Board members of California's Oakland Unified School District unanimously voted on Wednesday to cease suspending students for what they call 'willful defiance.' Those behaviors can include swearing/yelling at teachers, refusing direct orders, texting, and storming out of class, to name a few.

The reason? Concern that too many black students are being suspended for willful defiance.

One sophomore student, Dan'enicole Williams, told the San Francisco Gate, They never take time out, if someone is sleeping in class, to ask what's wrong. They may be acting that way because they didn't eat the night before.'

386 "I am just not seeing the tactical advantage to nuclear power. Abraham Lincoln has gone in for refueling, modernization, and repairs. At the cost of $2.6 billion and will not rejoin the Fleet until 2017."

The new generation reactors are designed to do away with the costly and protracted process of midlife refueling.

I am told that one of the biggest reasons for shunning nuclear power in surface ships other than CVN is simply because America's crummy public high schools are no longer producing a large enough cohort of potential naval recruits who would be able to qualify at nuc training.

(Note the recent scandal in which a bunch of young USN nucs were caught cheating on their quals, and apparently in some cases being encouraged to do so by their command structure.)

395 "The F-35 is a strong airplane."

I do not understand those words in that order.

Strong airplanes are ones that aren't limited by decree to pulling less than 4G.

Strong airplanes aren't afflicted with severe fatigue cracking all over the airframe from relatively modest pre-acceptance testing maneuvers.

(Fatigue cracking requiring the beefing up of structure, and the addition of new weight, to a design that's right on the razor edge already of exceeding critical weight targets.)

Sometimes designers try too long to combine mutually incompatible design goals. That's what happened here. The F-35 is the Shimmer of fighter jets: "a dessert topping AND a floor wax!"

There was a flying APC concept. A modest altitude, modest speed troop carrier armored up to survive anything in MANPAD/30mm class. No tail rotor, protected gear box, etc. Simple to fly, with an immediate autorotate to ground if SHTF.

Didn't make the cut in the spin up to the UH-60 and the M-2.

I still think the idea has merits. 50' of altitude is an excellent way to deal with IEDs.

423 269 Say what you will about the F-111 boondoggle, but damn, it was a lovely plane to watch in flight.

430 The insanely long gestation times for modern defense systems do give one pause to consider.

How in the ever loving hell will the U.S. ever have a prayer to ramp up production, and implement innovation, in a manner similar to the buildup prior to WWII.

And then, in a full war condition, to generate the industrial output necessary for success when in a major war.

The odds, I fear, are frightfully against our repeating those industrial miracles of the '30s and '40s.

And yes, even with the advances of modern systems, we'll still need billions of rounds of ammo, millions of shells, hundreds of thousands of bombs, tens of thousands of missiles.

Not to mention the countless logistical systems to get all the goodies where they've gotta go.

Army and Navy to be as small as pre WWII?

Good way to get into WWIII, that.

458 JEM.

The '111 did a few things that the A-6 or Buccaneer didn't.

It could go supersonic when needed, at any altitude. Not for an entire mission, but it sure was important to have on hand.

It employed many of the "Pave" series of target designators, and could be fitted to employ many more.

When not using the PaveWay system, and not using the bomb bay to carry an additional fuel cell, the '111 could carry an internal weapons load, resulting in a clean, more efficient airframe, and a far smaller radar signature than when carrying external stores.

For that matter though, a laden F-111 was still a smaller RCS than a bare naked A-6.

That said, the F-111, in any of it's variants, was not a tactical attack aircraft in the same manner as the A-6.

Practice had the F-111 making (usually) a single, high-speed pass, deploying one or more precision aimed weapons, using speed and surprise to hit unannounced, and escape before effective countermeasures could be brought to bear.

The A-6 & Buccaneer both, were more from the days when an Attack aircraft flew into the teeth of known defenses, evaded flack, tried to jam and/or defeat missiles, and to pickle dumb bombs onto hostile targets that were actively shooting back.

Later versions of the A-6, before they were all grounded, got equipped with precision interfaces, glass cockpits and other miracles of modern war aviation.

Kind of comparing a Clydesdale to a Thoroughbred. They're both great horses, just bred to do things.....differently.

460 @456 - yeah, but that wasn't something that needed afterburning TF30s or swing-wings (the center carrier of which proved to be something of a problem for a while, they had to rebuild a whole bunch of 'em after wings started going walkabout.)

Hang external ordnance or tankage on one and it's subsonic at operational altitudes anyway.

464 @459 - the initial premise was that the lower you flew the less reaction time the defense would have, which makes sense if you're talking about discrete standalone installations, but if you've got enough sensors spread around a poodle can do a pretty good job of predicting the inbound route.

470 The Russians had enough sensors.

But purchasers of Russian systems weren't as well equipped, and usually aren't to this very day.

Kadahffi had Russian systems, but bagged only a single F-111 on egress, as the SA-6 at the end of that runway basically had the poor bastard boresighted in a zero-deflection tail shot at minimal range.

That wasn't a triumph of sensor technology or other countermeasures. Just simply pure dumb luck of the radar locking on at a range of under one mile, with a signal strength sufficient to burn through the ECM being thrown from overhead by other U.S. assets.

And, it didn't stop the bombs from hitting the target. Sadly, it only prevented two brave U.S. Airmen from returning home to their families, forever.

Frankly though, a squadron of A-6s would have flown into slaughter if making the same attack.

Conversely, the A-6 completely rocked over the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, and were also wickedly effective over Iraq.

As far as the complexity of the swing wing platform, from mid '60s developed technology?

I'm thinking that we could do it a lot more smoothly and simply now.

IF that is, we let the engineers just DO the damned thing, and keep the bean counters and politicians out of it.

Once the DoD requirements have been set, then let the designs pursue the requirements. Quit moving the damn goal posts, and let's get something off the paper and into the factory.

The F-111 was another case of "dessert topping and floor wax". Too many incompatible design goals in one airframe.

USAF wanted an air superiority dogfighter and also wanted a separate long-range low-level penetrating bomber.

USN wanted an air superiority dogfighter as well, and also wanted a separate fleet air defense A/A missile truck.

The systems analysis community at the McNamara Pentagon said, hey, we can assign all three operating roles in one airframe, presto!

Plus since the USAF penetrating bomber capability overlapped that of the USN A-6 Intruder heavy deep strike mission, they presumed to assign that fourth operating role to the F-111 in USN service as well, and retire the A-6 early.

The analysts also touted all of the same malarkey we hear today from the F-35 boosters about combined depot servicing and common logistics tails and shareable spares and simplified training, and so forth.

Unfortunately, the finished F-111 product was woefully incapable of doing dogfighter work for either service. Never did, never could, not a hope in hell.

It did turn out to be a good penetrating bomber in USAF and RAAF service. It also could have done the fleet air defense job for USN, probably better than the design which ended up with the job, the F-14.

Fleet air defense meant being able to quickly carry a big-ass radar and a lot of heavy Phoenix missiles out a considerable distance from the battle group, and then loiter out there waiting to do long-range shootdowns of Soviet Naval Aviation formations. The -111 could carry more such A/A ordnance a lot further out, loiter longer, and safely bring back on board a heavier weight of unexpended Phoenixes. (Phoenices? Latin purists?) No dogfighting required for this duty.

Of course, the F-14 was light and agile enough (at least by comparison to its bigger fatter cousin) to be both a Phoenix hauler and a dogfighter, should dogfighting be required.

Interesting that in later years both the -111 and the -14 had new and not originally intended missions developed, as technology shifted. The electronic warfare role for the Raven version of the -111, and the deep strike capability for the "Bombcat" F-14.

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies 5
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart? 10
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp 15
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee? 20

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

477 Jean, what's sad is that the F-35 did have, and could still have, the potential for greatness.

I'd love to see a very simple test experiment though.

Stuff the F-35's non VTOL engine into an F-16 airframe, suitably modified. Better still, use that Cranked Arrow F-16 testbed from the mid '80s.

Vectored thrust in an F-16 with double the wing area?

I'll bet it'd out maneuver an F-35 on the '35's best day. And with some suitable modification to the F-16's iconic intake, you might even snarf up some valuable stealth-points.

All you'd have to do then, is to figure out how to use most of the F-35's electronics suite in the '16 airframe, and before you know it, you've got one hell of an attack fighter, for only a fraction of the cost.

Which would really piss off the defense procurement industry, but I'm a rebel that way.

Spelling of tyger
Blake's spelling is often idiosyncratic, though "tyger" was a common spelling of the word in his day. It has sometimes been argued that he specifically chose archaic or unusual English spellings in his writings, and that perhaps Tyger "suggests the exotic or alien quality of the beast"[1]. However, this may be a projection of modern attitudes, since the same spelling was used by writers other than Blake. The retention of the archaic spelling is a convention in modern editions.

In source 2 we read:
An analysis of "The Tyger" must begin with Blake's stylized spelling of the word Tyger. This spelling makes the reader pause to consider while the symbolic protagonist calls forth multiple, emotional images. The idea, tiger, creates reactions of both awe and terror; however, by placing his tyger "in the forest" (rather than the jungle) Blake both softens the image and contributes to the unnatural atmosphere begun by the word Tyger. Next, Blake's description of his tyger reminds the reader of an artistic criticism. The descriptive word symmetry (excellence of proportion and regularity of form) expands the idea, tiger, to an abstract (like a painting) so that when Blake appends the word fearful (which has more than a hundred synonyms ranging from unearthly and ghoulish to horrible, frightful, and aweful) the reader is nearly startled by both the beautiful contrast and the absolute truth of the description.

And in a book called "Notes and Queries" from 1887, we find this note about spelling (source 3, page 339):

It was not till (sic) the sixteenth century that most of the corrupt forms which grate upon us were introduced. Since the time of Queen Anne there has been but little alteration; but even at the beginning of the present (19th) century it was not unusual to spell tiger "tyger," and set "sett."

Gonna dive into a dive I've dove into before.
Gonna aunt a haunt I've haunted like a million times or more.
A familiar joint where getting drunk's the only point.
To frequent this place with any frequency at all.
Countin' on a remedy I've counted on before.
Goin' with a cure that's never failed me.
What you call the disease, I call the remedy.
What you're callin' the cause, I call the cure.
Gonna sing a song, a song to you, a song I've sung before.
Belt out a ballad that I've belted out a million times or more.
The words I'm gonna scream,
And getting drunk is the central theme to the lyrics
If you can make the lyrics out at all.
Countin' on a remedy I've counted on before.
Goin' with a cure that's never failed me.
What you call the disease, I call the remedy.
What you're callin' the cause, I call the cure.
Just a devotion to a potion.
Please, no applause.
A dedication to a medication.
A crutch, a cure, a cause.
What I've counted on to pick me up has knocked me to my knees.
Before I hit the floor once more I'll call it the disease.

I have no suspicions of the old-timers, but we constantly need to refresh the Horde. And, like I said, anyone who 'fessed up privately and apologized to the fiancee using real info, I might forget to mention to future investigators.....but I am so fucking white-hot furious at amazon that there WILL be policy changes. I'll start on their audit committee by the end of next week.
