Overnight Open Thread (28 Mar 2015)

Seriously. W. T. F? Close media aide to President Rouhani defects during Iran nuclear talks, says U.S. negotiators acting on behalf of Iran.

Rum

A beginner's guide to Navy rum.

The Royal Navy later tweaked the formula of the rations after the rum had been proved by adding some water and a bit of lime juice to combat scurvy. This healthy cocktail became known as grog after the 18th century British admiral Edward Vernon, better known as "Old Grog" for the waterproof grogram cloak he wore at sea.

The Minigun

Fair Trade Condoms

Fair-trade condoms are now a thing.

That was until she learned how condoms are made while taking a sustainable economics course at NYU: Mass-marketed rubbers are often produced using toxic chemicals, unfair wages, child labor or production methods that are harmful to the environment.
So Singer ditched the Durex and went fair-trade.
Yes, like coffee, chocolate and cotton, rubbers are now coming under the scrutiny of fair-trade advocates

Celebretard

Another reason why you really should never, ever listen to a celebrity. Sharon Stone denies involvement in Chevron shakedown.

Sleeping In The Military

T-50 Fighter

Heh. They really are copying us. Russia's answer to US next-gen fighter hits the skids.

Female Thor

How the new female Thor shows the grip that feminists have on comics. Despite promises of not becoming a vehicle for feminism, they did it anyway.

Rep. Ellison

Oh dear. You don't get to pick and choose what you'll allow the executive to get away with. Rep. Ellison: 'Not Constitutionally proper' this time for congress to allow Obama to use his pen.

77 That Russki T-50 might be slick as owl shit, but only a dozen of 'em isn't exactly fearsome.

With downtime, that's less than a squadron in the air at any given time.

If they're effective though, they do represent one hell of a threat in development, and what they portend for the future should be taken seriously, indeed.

Not because of Russian defense technology prowess. But because of Russian prowess in spying and stealing U.S. military technologies.

That's the real threat here.

And with a complicit, America hating administration?

I think it'll take twenty years of purges and the prolific application of the death penalty for spying, before we get that back under control.

Things are certainly heating up, round the world, aren't they?

Superman. Supergirl.
Batman. Batgirl. Batwoman.
Besides bat-dog, super-horse, and spider-car.

Thor-powers have also been granted to an alien (Beta Ray Bill) and even, IIRC, a frog. So, female counterparts are common enough, no biggie. It's really just mostly a copyright thing. If Marvel didn't do She-Hulk, somebody else might. DC had Wonder Woman, but Marvel grabbed Wonder Man.

However, after reading the pages in the linked article...

I'm about 90% certain that the Bush admin knew that Bin Laden was in Pakistan, but made sure that we didn't do any forays into Pakistan as to not piss them off and lose our ground route to and from Afghanistan.

Barky on the other hand needed a "win", so he sent the mission that got Bin Laden, but pissed off the Pakistanis, so now we have to airlift everything in and out of Afghanistan, or just leave it there.

Plus, with Bin Laden alive, we knew that Al Qaeda's leadership was weakened, but we knew how to contain it. Once he was dead, the leadership became fractured and easier for the Muslim brotherhood to co-opt.

267 A lot of that feng shui stuff makes a lot of sense.
Such as not placing your house at the end of a T intersection. All of that force going against your house day after day, sooner or later, the odds are against you.
Also situating your work desk so that you can see who enters the door.
Also not putting your home or office in a flood plain.
Also not designing your house such that the first thing you see when you open the door front is a toilet.
All of this is just normal, common sense stuff.

401 I wonder though, how many JW have been killed in the line of (religious) duty? Knocking on strangers' doors is pretty risky.>>>

I live in the country. A woman came to my door selling some kind of life insurance. As we were talking on the porch a gunshot rang out nearby. (it was deer season) Her reaction was hilarious and she was done selling.

I could put up a gate but that would keep my friends out and be a bigger pain to me than the 5 people a year that show up knocking on my door.

404 Of course, if DC and Marvel are just gonna churn out pussified SJW crap that insults their overwhelmingly male audience ... that should be leaving the market open for some other comic publisher to create some more traditional comics with some old-fashioned superheros. Is that happening?

Posted by: Costanza Defense at March 29, 2015 12:01 AM

Not gonna happen. The market for pulp comics has been shrinking for some time. There's just no room for a new publisher to get something up and going that can make a sufficient impact. That time has long since passed. One could still do something that would constitute a niche market within an already evaporating market, but the sales are going to be slim. DC and Marvel themselves are pretty much coasting on their past and are aligned to things like movies and whatnot. It's not impossible, but, it would require a stunning effort for a new thing from a new publisher to capture a large share of the slim market as it stands. Even that isn't going to be much in terms of actual pulp sales. Unless it moves into the movie/tv etc industry, it's still going to be a blip.

We are the Fags of the Queen Berets!
Obamas words upon our ears,
"You guys have rights, be proud you're queers!"
I once was scared, now I'm Okay,
Cause I'm a fag in the Queen Berets.
Put silver earclips on our nuts;
We love the pain, now spank our butts!
The way you walk is awfully cute;
I sure would love to pack your chute!
Back at home, a young wife waits,
Her Queen Beret just won't go straight;
For his team he stays undressed,
Spreads his legs, and lies on his chest.
This Army stuff is really slick;
Free clothes, bunk beds, and lots of dicks.
When we retire, we'll still get paid;
We thank you, Barack, from the Queen Berets!

472 Great Moments in the treatment of paranoid schizophrenics http://www.unz.com/isteve/great-moments-in-the-treatment-of-paranoid-schizophrenics/

-- The newest breakthrough in ensuring schizophrenic people take their medication (a hard problem!) is bundling the pills with an ingestible computer chip that transmits data from the patient’s stomach. It’s a bold plan, somewhat complicated by the fact that one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia is the paranoid fear that somebody has implanted a chip in your body to monitor you. Can you imagine being a schizophrenic guy who has to explain to your new doctor that your old doctor put computer chips in your pills to monitor you? Yikes. ...

-- The same team is working on a smartphone app to detect schizophrenic relapses. The system uses GPS to monitor location, accelerometer to detect movements, and microphone to check tone of voice and speaking pattern, then throws it into a machine learning system that tries to differentiate psychotic from normal behavior (for example, psychotic people might speak faster, or rock back and forth a lot). Again, interesting idea. But again, one of the most common paranoid schizophrenic delusions is that their electronic devices are monitoring everything they do.

Honestly, the Religious Liberty line of defense isn't the best one.

The better option would be to stress Free Speach reasoning. Most of these places will happily serve gay customers. It is about someone who is forced to use their personal creative abilities to promote and endorse a particular view point. In other Anglo-sphere countries (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), they have forced acceptance outright. In America, due to the 1st Amendment, they are limited, but have gotten around this when people are engaged in commerce.

You do not lose your 1st Amendment rights just because you are earning a buck.

That this imposition is not content neutral, just rubs salt in the wounds of the Contitution.

Oh... and part of the problem with "traditional" superhero concepts, as I interpret them, anyway... is the age of buyers in what little there is in sales these days. To get a new "trad" superhero concept up and going, you would be depending on sales to kids and kids don't buy comics anymore. The age of comic buyers has been increasing since the 80's and these days it's pretty much exclusively 30 to 40 yo+. These guys want gritty. They want sexy. They want in-your-face-attitude. They don't want "kids stuff". Comics have taken a nose dive into shit since kids as buyers started to decline. One of the big hits occurred in the 90's during the Marvel newstand/distributor wars. Once comics started to move from newstands to comic store specialists, the rot increased exponentially.

Is there ever a case for a US Navy Colonel? I ran into it at a meeting with a couple of other service Colonels and it was unknown to me. I did a little digging and saw something about Naval Infantry, not USMC, but didn't get very far. Person in question is Naval Medical/Nursing background.

I once wired dedicated outlets behind each of four toilets in a stupid person's condo. It was quite expensive.

The purpose was so they could put some heated, powered, bidet-style
seats on their existing $150 toilets. And yes, remotes were included.

Posted by: shredded chi at March 29, 2015 02:54 AM (P6CVl)

Look at how many 5-star reviews they got.

Gee, I hope there's some security on those remotes. I can imagine in some well-heeled downtown condo building when someone's remote controls two floors up-or-down and three condos side-to-side.

Ah, someone did chase the link. Any guesses what their booth looked like?

And, yes, they were all excited about data monitoring (thinking of the aged wealthy who wouldn't have to pee in a cup for their staff of on-call doctors), or limited situations of intensive monitoring (hospitals)....but were also thinking of prisons.
Which reminded me of the vacation planet where you had to get a receipt every time you went to the toilet, or they'd surgically remove excess mass from you to keep their planet from eroding away.

I'm likin' the ones I got -- they're installed in regular can lights that were part of the 2004 kitchen remodel, and do a better job than the incandescents the cans were designed for or the CFs that have been there since the regular bulbs burned out. 766 On a completely different subject.....on our shopping run to Wallyworld, I noticed that I was getting a "thunk thunk thunk" in rhythm to my wheels turning if I was generally heading left. I pulled over into a parking lot, inspected things and didn't see anything too amiss. Then we went home, and about half-an-hour later drove off for our hike. On the way back from the hike, it was very obvious.

So I got back to the house, evicted the fiancee's car from the driveway (she only takes up half -- but, unfortunately, that half is in the middle). I jacked the wheels up and rotated them while feeling for anything caught or embedded, to no avail. Then I jacked 'em up again and loosened and retightened the lug-nuts, and when I got to the front wheel, two of 'em were just hand-tight instead of firm.

I couldn't see this in the field or when the car was in the driveway because the weight of the car kept it from waggling when I pushed on it.

Without having a fast jack, is there another diagnostic to easily check for this?

It's actually an inevitable result of the way that the blog processes information. There's a blorp of A -- and everybody who really wants to respond to A runs off to compose a think-piece about it.....while everyone who is oblivious comments about Z, and those less passionate about A riff onto a post about the B that A reminded them about.

Click 2 -- there's a blorp of B -- and everybody who really wants to respond to B runs off to compose a
think-piece about it.....while everyone who is oblivious comments about
Y, and those less passionate about B riff onto a post about the C that B
reminded them about.

In click 3, you have the think-pieces from A, the C reactions from B, a bunch of static from Y and Z, and a bombshell from D.

It wasn't that people were ignoring Ira -- they were still reacting to things that came before him on the blog. Once that cleared up, we all said "hi".

No -- it was that 2/4 bolts holding a front wheel on were loose. I figured it out relatively quickly and tried to test it with all four paws on the ground -- by pushing the tire in all four quarters with my foot......and it looked right, because the weight of the car was holding it against one side. But when I jacked the car, it was clear that two lugnuts were to loose.
