Fourth Virginia, Neptune's Inferno is excellent. As are Tin Can Sailors and Ghost Ship, also by Hornfischer. Apparently he's a friendly sort - I think it was commenter Yip (sometimes an ONT regular) who's had lunch with him or at least talked to him after reading his books.

Mind (blowing) exercise. Read any of the intense battle scenes in Neptune's or Tin Can Sailors. Now find the WaPo (especially) or other MSM accounts from March 2003, during the sandstorm/rest-pause in Iraq.

Try to wrap your mind around the incredible ferocity, risk, and uncertainty of the naval combat in 1942, and then behold the idiotic panic-ky nonsense of 2003 (and not just, though mostly, among the "journalists").

Seamus, if you're here, to respond to your question in the last thread ...

Yes, Guadalcanal was the first offensive land action by the US in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor, and the first place US and Japanese land forces clashed (ignoring anything going on at Corregidor, or the limited action on Wake Island prior to surrender).

As for lessons learned, I think esp. at that stage of the war almost everything was benefitting from a sharp learning curve (because, understandably, we didn't know what we were doing half the time). But Guadalcanal was an unopposed landing, so there weren't particularly important lessons about amphibious warfare from it. Normandy of course was very much an opposed landing.

Not sure, but for the Pacific theater, the debacle at Tarawa was probably more instructive for future operations. Torch (North Africa) did involve some opposed landings. That and Sicily/Anzio may well have had more influence on D-Day planning, as far as logistics, techniques, and planning.

You know, for people who claim to love "Science" and "Reason" and "Reality" the Left sure goes to great lengths to ignore all three of those when they're in opposition to their political goals.

I found it interesting that the Casablanca part of Operation Torch forces embarked from the U.S. while the Algiers and Oran portion sailed from the U.K. And I thought they were largely unopposed due to those being Vichy French occupied lands while the Afrika Korps was engaged with the Brits in Egypt/Libya
I was wondering if the Casablanca involved a deep water port debarkation or somehow involved landing craft. I obviously have to read more.

If I understand correctly, decriminalization means the law doesn't change but the cops stop enforcing it. Colorado outright legalized pot, which meant a change to the law.

Amsterdam does not have drug legalization, contrary to what a lot of people think. They just don't enforce the laws on the books.

Seamus, vaguely recall that the Oran landings were (desultorily) opposed by the Vichy French forces - at least I think that's what happened (and we were surprised, and p***ed off about it). Actually only reading on Torch, speaking ofcontemporary horrendous WaPo war reporting low-lights,was in Atkinson's book (his byline was atop the hysterically stupid panic article on the 3rd day of the Iraq campaign).

Atkinson's writing style was so bad - precocious high schooler without an editor, sort of that flavor - I literally couldn't read past the first 100 pages. Only WWII book I've ever not finished. And of course I didn't even bother with the other two books of his trilogy. Also hard to take him seriously after his ludicrous Iraq performance, so ...

109 U.S. Army campaign History, first day Morocco:

"French opposition, much stronger than at Safi, caused more confusion and delays. At dawn French planes strafed the beaches and bombed transports. A strong coast artillery concentration at a fortress near Mehdia rained a heavy volume of fire on transports offshore. To the south the 1st Battalion Landing Team struggled in the sand for over five hours to regain its beach, to round the lagoon, and to start toward the airfield only to be pinned down by machine-gun fire the rest of the day. To the rear French reinforcements from Rabat were firing on landing team outposts. In the middle the 2d Battalion Landing Team stopped to await naval gunfire support, was then hit hard by a French counterattack, and was pushed back almost to the beach with heavy losses. While the Navy was firing on the Mehdia fortress, troops ashore did not yet have enough artillery to quiet the French batteries, whose fire kept tank lighters from landing and forced transports to move out of range, thus lengthening the route to shore. By nightfall on D-day the Americans occupied precarious positions miles from the airfield they so desperately needed."

The guy discussing it is a chef who talked about the area undergoing major race riots in 2001 and the area being more or less abandoned and then a major development company coming in and buying up stuff in 2004 and then his restaurant coming in around 2009 because he figured the area was at its lowest point and could only go up. The thing that struck me about it? The huge developer coming in was presented as saving the area, not evil evil gentrification, and the economic decision to open the restaurant there because hey it's as cheap as it is going to get. The most important safeguard in military justice being prohibition of same. The sage continues. There's another Marine still being dogged by this prosecution - and the shenanigans pulled by Amos and Quantico to date, uh, sort of do heavy direct damage to Amos' precious "integrity of the Corps".

I agree that you have a point (and I had given that some thought as well), but then I thought this: "that happens such a small percentage of the time that digressing to talk about it doesn't actually add anything to the article."

One- since it's such a small percent, you'd end up adding at least two paragraphs- one saying "yes this can happen" and then another explaining why that doesn't matter to your main point.

Two- The point of his article was not about gun safety, but about people who don't understand gun safety. Adding those in only muddies the point that "gun grabbers as a group do not know the first thing about guns."

Yeah that's not true at all. My best friends 2 twin sons are both Post Doctoral At Cal Tech in Chemistry and it is very PC and as in much of higher learning many many of the Grants- which these programs depend on to survive- are based on Gender and Race. It is very sad

Asian-Americans and aff. action. Sadly, one good old friend is now part of Beltway problem - he's still sane, but his wife is pretty much a default Dem drone, thus complicit in all the ongoing disasters. But when her precious snowflake daughter was facing difficulty getting into "elite" colleges, ohmy - suddenly the mother was commonsensical, and outraged. Hilarious.

And the slimy POS state senator from Chinatown/SF, Yee, before his arrest on various felonies, had bucked his insane Dem caucus on aff. action admissions issues after his constituents had lit him up on it (did everyone realize that 10% of the Dem caucus in the largest state's senate is under felony arrest? what? no blazing, relentless, "culture of criminality" themes pulsing through the "press", making this all so familiar to you? hmmm, that's odd)

Neptune's Inferno, great line: junior radar operator in the commanding admiral's ship, as the US shipshold their fire in the dark and watch as the (radar-less) Japanese column approaches to very, very close range: "what are we going to do, sir, board them??" You are forcing people to participate in something they are religiously opposed to.

I was told yesterday that this view makes you a bigot.

Actually, though, I'd go further. Florists, bakers, photographers,
or whoever have the Right- and should not be punished for invoking it-
to refuse to serve whomever they choose for any reason or no reason at
all.

Gay marriage, anti-discrimination laws and the 1st Amendment--pick two.

Specifically: Gay marriage is 100% incomparable with the 1st Amendment.

Gabe, and all those who support gay marriage, want to eliminate all your 1st Amendment rights. That is no exaggeration. Unless you can point me to one person advocating for the repeal of anti-discrimination laws.

You can't. And they don't care. Better you be forced to deny your religion, your God, or lose your livelihood just so they can get back at dad for being so mean when they were growing up.

That quote on the ONT which said College Degrees are the new social class is spot on.

AllenG and several other hordelings specifically advocated for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act in yesterday's thread.

They want the right to not serve blacks. Or gays. It's a civil rights issue.

OKay, I stand corrected. On the maker, not the shaking discharge.

And Allen, electrons are cheap and if he wants to teach, then he should be thorough. Because some leftiy prog will bring up the discharge case(s) and then say

"You can ignore this person, he has all his 'facts' wrong."

Well, their "leaders" have been given a few token elected positions--like the blacks--(not real leadership positions, mind you--those are for white Democrats only) by the Democrats soooo . . . keep waiting.

180 About government getting all up in your bong:

When Prohib was initiated, drinking went up. After Repeal, drinking went up.

Prohib increases the lure for those for whom "forbidden fruit" is part of the attraction. Repeal opens up use (with the threat of abuse) to those who would have otherwise obeyed a prohibition.

Under Prohib, you have those who follow the law, and those who shop in the black market. It doesn't actually stop anything, just alters the markets. The numbers from the Great Experiment are hard to parse as far as which had what social effect upon how many, Prohib or Repeal, encouraging or discouraging use and abuse, because it's so difficult to separate the impact of Prohib & Repeal from the other dynamic changes going on in American society in the same period.

Those of us who would obey the law but want to enjoy a cider at the end of the day would be deprived of that luxury under Prohib. If all one wants is to grow a plant and smoke it, is that a prison-worthy offense?

I hold thus:

- Substances are not behaviors. Adults should be legal to do whatever. When you can't handle it, you will be tried on the crimes you commit. It is unfortunate, but we really should have a society that has to wait for a real transgression to be committed.

- Taxes should be flat on all sales. No luxury tax, gas tax, vice tax, or other special rates. Government should not be in the business of attempting social changes or modifying behaviors through force of taxes.

Taxes suppress what is taxed, so savings taxes, property and investment taxes, income taxes, all discourage what we ought to be doing, saving, investing, owning, earning. While taxes of any kind must suck, and we can never stop cheating, seems like the best tax is a flat sales tax; whatever exceptions there might be (e.g. basic foods), anything that's sold is taxed the same. People will pay sales taxes that are within reason, especially if society is healthy and thus sales will happen a lot, and the government you're paying the tax for is what it ought to be.

Yeah, I know.

184 How to get your ex back...
THE GREAT Dr erigo WHO BROUGHT MY HUSBAND BACK TO ME IN JUST ONE DAY.
My name is MERCY WIDEN I live in Canada, and i got married four months ago. My husband and I have been living a very happy and lovely life. So as time went on, I began to notice this strange attitude that he was possessing. He was now going out with other girls, to the extent that he was no longer picking up my calls, and he was not even sleeping in the house anymore. I became confused and didn't know what to do anymore. So i became worried and stranded, that brought so many thoughts into my mind, because I have never experienced a thing like this before in my life.

So I decided to visit a spell caster, to see if he can help me out. So immediately I went to the internet, where I saw an amazing testimony of a spell caster who brought someone's ex lover back, "Dr erigo" so I contacted him immediately and I explained to him all my problems and he told me that it will be very easy for him to solve, compare to the ones that he has done before. And he also gave me some proof to be really sure of his work, and he assured me that my husband will come back to me immediately he is through with the spell casting. And also he told me to put all my trust in him, and I really obeyed him. So it was 8:00 am on the next morning, when I was about going to work, when i received my husband's call, and he told me that he was coming back home, and he apologized to me, and told me that he is very sorry for the pain that he has cost me. And after some hours later, he really came back home, and that was how we continued our marriage with lots of love and happiness, and our love was now stronger than how it were before.

Moreso, he also told me that once my heart desire has been granted unto me that i should go and testify of his work right here on the internet. Right now I am the happiest woman on earth today as I am writing this testimony, and I want to really thank "Dr erigo" for bringing back my husband, and for bringing joy and love to my family. So my greatest advice for you out there who your husband or your wife is acting strange or behaving the same way like this, or you have any problem with your relationship or anything related to do with spell casting, is for you to go and visit this man anytime, and i assure you that he will be of help to you, and I am 100% sure that he will solve it out.
