Burger King Launches Gay Whopper

The Politicization of Everything, as Sonny Bunch calls it, now includes cheeseburgers.

Burger King has concocted yet another way to have it your way: a gay pride burger.

The Proud Whopper, as it's called, comes wrapped in a rainbow colored wrapper with this inscription: "We are all the same inside." It will be sold through Thursday at one Burger King restaurant on San Francisco's Market Street, that was at the heart of the route for last weekend's 44th annual San Francisco Pride Celebration & Parade.

Burger King on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. EST plans to post a two-minute video about the Proud Whopper on its YouTube channel.

"It showcases who we are as a brand," says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. "It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression."

The inspiration behind the unusual burger wrap and video, he says, is Burger King's localized efforts to put into motion actions that support its recently-tweaked slogan: "Be Your Way."

I don't know if the Gay Pride Whopper is any different than a regular Whopper, apart from the rainbow-foil packaging. I suppose the whole idea is that it shouldn't be any different. (It would be sort of funny if the slogan were "We're all the same inside" but then it turns out the Gay Pride Whopper has Thousand Island dressing on it or something.)

So they're just selling you some rainbow foil.

It's just strange to sell mundane items branded for identity politics -- why is there no Black Pride Whopper?

Does Burger King not support its black clientele?

Via @allahpundit.

What had been a joke in the mid-90s is now a reality.

11 Gay money spends the same way as straight money, and if they are foolish enough to buy a burger because someone put a different wrapper on it, then so be it.

It kind of reminds me of other advertising fads where every thing was "cyber" something or "X" another.

What the fuck happened to judging people by the content of their character, rather than their membership in a (usually quite small) subgroup of the whole? Is it because there isn't anyone out there actually willing to show some character, rather than simply trying to be one?

No, that is the point.

The filet-o-fish doesn't assert Catholicism as a true faith, or voice support for Catholic policies. It's a fish option. It's value neutral. Anybody can eat it, and it doesn't make them Catholic.

The Gay whopper is just a whopper. It's called a gay whopper as part of the same, "in your face" assault on culture that the left is orchestrating across the board.

Are we going to pretend they aren't forcing bakers to bake them cakes, or firing CEOs, or forcing employees to take gay loyalty oaths?

189 Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at July 02, 2014 02:14 PM (0LHZx)

No. You are the one missing the point.

In the 60's a McD's franchise owner looked and said, "Hmm... I'm losing business on Fridays because my clientele eats elsewhere. I'd really like those dollars to line *my* pocket thankyouverymuch." And so introduced something they would eat.

Identity politics? I guess if you want to be especially obtuse- even for you.

Burger King isn't introducing a new item because gays were staying away from Burger King. This literally cost them money (in the special order wrappers, the advertising, and now in lost business) to "target" a "demographic" which did not need targeting.

Even if you put the culture war part aside (and I don't), it's a stupid business decision. Why spend money to make a very small % of your clientele feel a little better while alienating a lager % of your clientele?

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther), Ah, F it. at July 02, 2014 02:18 PM (PYAXX)

About five years ago there was a news item hidden way back on the inside pages of the local newspaper about a small black newborn infant that had been abandoned the previous day in the lavatory of the McDonalds just two miles down the road from where I lived at the time (and this was in a nice neighborhood). Incredulous, I went down there and personally pulled the assistant manager aside and asked her if the story was true. In a hushed tone of voice she replied that yes, it was true. This was in Charlotte, NC.

That's the sort of thing that can put a white person off from eating at McDonalds.

Way to miss the point...which is....companies
come up with products and/or campaigns to target specific demographics.
Gays are a demographic (whether you like it or not). Hence, companies
will have products/campaigns aimed at them. Just like they have
products/campaigns aimed at every single demographic you can think off,
be it by race, sex, age, region, religion, sports team affiliation and
yes.....who you like to fuck.

At 1.8% of the population they are an insignificant demographic. This move is not targeted at the "gay" demographic, it is targeted at the "I want to feel good about myself by showing how tolerant I am of the ass bandits" Demographic.

The whole gay marriage thing is explicitly sold as being necessary because gays need psychological validation and the theoretical concept of a heteronormative marriage that almost none of them will engage in until their dotage will give it to them.

Hell, the implication of the gay marriage float in the Rose Parade was "Gay marriage -- because if you don't, you dirty animals will end up getting AIDS." I am not kidding. It was sponsored by the AIDS healthcare foundation.

Vic, a couple of thoughts...

First, the story quotes the BK senior VP of global brand management, so this has at the very least corporate blessing.

Second, franchises have to abide by very strict agreements as to what they can or cannot do with the brands. They can't just decide on their own to do something like this...corporate has to buy off on it.

That's why Moo Moo is funny in aggressively missing the point. it doesn't matter if it's just one restaurant...BK is approving this which means theywon't be getting any of my dollars. And BFD if my local franchisee has nothing to do with it. When he complains to corporate that their pandering is costing him sales, I have a feeling they'll listen more closely to him than they will to me.

Cabela's markets to hunters.

An appropriate analogy would be a Burger King in rural Georgia introducing a camouflage wrapper for the whopper. Which would actually be a pretty good idea I think. And it would be the exact same marketing tactic. It doesn't mean BK hates non-hunters, it doesn't mean BK is trying to convert everyone to be a hunter. It only means BK has a campaign to increase sales of a product in a specific location for a specific set of clients.

Like I said Marketing 101.

Burger King has always had quality control issues. Individual owners have always been able to get around the corporate sourcing subsidiary. Too bad, because a properly prepared Whopper (i.e. to corporate specs) is a pretty decent burger.

In the 80's and 90's, Hardees had huge problems because they were owned by a conglomerate that was all about cost-cutting at the expense of quality. In 1997, however, they were purchased by Carl Karcher Enterprises, the parent company of Carl's Jr. (my favorite fast food burger chain). Quality then dramatically improved at Hardee's -- this may have been when you noticed the improvement.

About a month or so back Ace had a post about how companies pander to various constituencies after that one guy at the software company got fired for donating to Prop. 8. Yeah, companies shouldn't pander. Other things shouldn't happen either. Companies will pander to avoid pain, controversey and other headaches - always have, always will -so the thing to do is to train them to fear pain coming from you. Just quietly avoid them while they are doing Gay Burger Hour or whatever it is called and return when they finish it. Fast food is a cut-throat business and they will notice the sales dip and rebound and will put two and two together.

Otherwise - good luck with being a new daddy in six months. Better stock up on sleep while you can.

Prepare yourself for the gay-cola, gaIKEA, Gaywiser, gaymentos, gayM&Ms and if you complain you are a bigot and a hater and you will be fired from your workplace and sent to re-education camps.

Next step is having doctors and paediatricians on TV claiming that babies bought from Vietnam and raised by 2 homos fare better than the ones grown by a biological mother and father and all the scientific community will bow down to Big Anus once again.

Following step, remove children from conservative families (a bonus if they are also chuch goers) to deliver them to our better big anuses.

Was it that painful to grow a pair of balls and have some spine and stop this lunacy 15 years ago?

Putin is right and will go down in history as one of the greatest politicians of our time on par with Churchill. Russia will survive the decline.

There is an existing national database. When we discussed this a month or so ago, someone posted a link to it. No, I don't have it, but I did look at it and I know there is such a database.

I shoulda kept the link, and I might even have done so, but i've got so many now I can't keep up with them.

Anyone out there know about this database of liberal and conservative companies in the US?

374 Of course it's pandering; That's what marketing is. What do you think a Santa in a mall is? It's pandering to Christians. What do you think "Memorial Day Sales" are? Pandering. It's all pandering. Every ad you see on TV is pandering to some group of people.

Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at July 02, 2014 02:28 PM (0LHZx)

Santa is pandering to kids. And he is a marketing tool to encourage parents to buy more stuff for their kids, whether they are Christian or not. The vast majority of non church going population still does Santa for their kids.

Memorial day sales are pandering to whom? Dead soldiers?

This thing with Burger King is simply a bribe being paid to keep the gays and their footsoldiers off the demonstration wagon. It's more like insurance. If Burger King does as much visible stuff as possible to proclaim themselves "gay supporters" , maybe they will be left alone..for now.

Kind of like when the shrinks took homosexuality out of the "mental illness" category even though they still had a higher incidence of suicide, which I believe flew in the face of how other groups with high suicide rates were handled. As I've said before, how are homos who are "married" dealing with feeling just the same as they did previously? Or worse? The pursuit of happiness is not the same as the attainment of it.

466 In a sense, the BK/gay slogan "we are all the same inside" IS ENTIRELY CORRECT.

This is because the whole "homosexuality is genetic" argument is bogus. Gays are people who *chose* to be gay. They were not born that way, having some somewhat genetic or epigenetic compoment that makes them that way.

These are the new questions Chase is asking its employees, from WZ:
1) A person with disabilities; 2) A person with children with disabilities; 3) A person with a spouse/domestic partner with disabilities; 4) A member of the LGBT community. 5) An ally of the LGBT community, but not personally identifying as LGBT.
Why do they not word the disability questions the same way they do the gay ones, or vice versa. Say "are you a member of the disability community," are you an ally of the disability. OR, ask are you a person who is gay, do you have gay family members, etc.

Because while I have gay family members and friends who I love, and I am 100% an ally of them individually, I have serious, serious problems with certain aspects and tenents of the gay community as a whole. Even a lot of gays do as well. So to lump my support in with the "commuity," I would say no to that. And then get fired I suppose. I'm guessing they leave no room for you to explain your answers.

So, an amendment was proposed formally put forward by Uruguay that would acknowledge that various forms of the family exist. This amendment would cover not just samesex couples, of course, but families where grandparents raise the kids, or single parent families anything other than the assumed norm of the traditional family. And it would make clear that subsequent UN action could not be used as a club against families diverging from that norm. But as soon as Uruguay proposed the amendment, Russia pulled a little used administrative trick a no action motion to prevent it from even being discussed.
