Obama: Those Principles On Immigration Boehner Announced Sound Ok To Me

Fantastic.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and GOP leaders on Thursday released a set of "principles" that included a path to legal status -- but not citizenship -- for the more than 10 million illegal immigrants currently in the United States. Immigration reform advocates expressed optimism about the move, and Obama's words Friday seem to further improve chances for a deal.

"If the speaker proposes something that says, right away, folks aren't being deported, families aren't being separated, we're able to attract top young students to provide the skills or start businesses here and then there's a regular process of citizenship, I'm not sure how wide the divide ends up being," Obama said in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

Obama echoed immigrant advocacy groups that gave the GOP's so-called "principles" a vote of confidence. These groups in recent days have expressed more openness to something that stops shy of a path to citizenship.

"I am encouraged by what Speaker Boehner has said," Obama said. "Obviously, I was encouraged by the bipartisan bill that passed out of the Senate. I genuinely believe that Speaker Boehner and a number of House Republicans, folks like Paul Ryan, really do want to get a serious immigration reform bill done."

The only upside to the GOP giving conservatives the shaft on immigration, again, is when Team GOP says, "by holding Republicans accountable for their liberal votes you are only helping to elect Democrats" we can point out that they are the ones who are throwing Obama a legislative lifeline. We just spent 2 days talking about how the State of the Union proved Obama's agenda was dead and he was reduced to "a pen and a phone" gestures. And yet the Republicans have decided this is the perfect time to offer him a way forward on one to the Democrats top 3 legislative priorities.

A couple of reminders from the archives...

Yes, it's amnesty because there are penalties on the books now for being here illegally that will be ignored.

Amnesty is immoral.

Being anti-amnesty isn't the same as being anti-immigration or anti-immigrant.

In case you missed it last night, watch the video in this post of people learning what ObamaCare is going to do to them and their families. Then explain to me why the GOP wants to waste one second helping people who are breaking our laws that could be used to help these people who just want to raise their family and not get hurt by their government.

And to add insult to injury, not only will Republicans spend time not helping these people, they will be working to make sure people who came here illegally can now compete with them for their jobs.

There's your GOP. But sure, keep telling me why it's terrible I won't blindly vote for anyone with an "R" after their name.

You know the old joke where a billionaire asks a woman if she'd take $1 million to sleep with him and she says yes, and the he offers her $20 for a BJ. She gets offended and he punchlines her with 'we've already established what you are, now we're just discussing price.'

I live in the Central Valley of California... an area which has had de facto unlimited Immigration for about 30 years.

I am also retired Navy, and KNOW what it feels like to be in a foreign country....

The town I was born, and raised in... now feels foreign to me. There are days I hear more Spanish spoken, than English.

There are clubs and businesses that I am not welcome in...

1/2 of the radio stations, are Spanish....

Because... I am NOW a minority in my own home town...

Oh... and did I mention the economy SUCKS... with very high unemployment? and many many people getting Government assistance???

Hell... drive down 99 Highway... you can tell who has not been in the country long by how they drive...

And it was NOT this way when I was born here 54 years ago.

Immigration is OK... too high of a Rate of Immigration and they will not assimilate to the Parent culture.... and that culture then dies.

All the feuding and fussing between the two parties is a creation of the lying MFM and the 2 parties themselves, to serve as a smokescreen. They have to make it APPEAR that there is an opposition party, and both parties fund-raise off of their supposed ideological differences.

The "2 parties" are really one party, pretending to be two to make money.

46 Alright, so here is where I'm going to have to start departing from the company line, so to speak.

I guess I have to ask an honest quesiton or two. Do we / you think that illegal immigration is an actual issue that needs to be addressed ? And if so, do you think "self deportation" through enforcement of existing law is a legitimate solution ?

I mean, if you follow the link about "existing penalties being ignored" it seems like that means jailtime. Tell me that isn't referenced as a rhetorical crutch. Do you really think you could put every single illegal in jail ? No ? So then are you effectively endorsing a 1) deport by force, 2) enforce the law resulting in self-deportation, 3) jailtime for illegals, or 4) status quo as the only options ?

And are you prepared to admit or at least address that the vast majority of your fellow Americans are not going to see those 4 options as acceptable ? Does it even matter ?

Look, separating the problem / solution from politics is necessary here. Its a problem that needs to be addressed. Period. Whether or not the GOP is approaching this with the misguided intent to improve their electoral prospects with latinos is really not relevant to the fact that the problem DOES need to be addressed.

The fact is, this problem is too big and too complex for any kind of "fuck em" approach. You can't put them all in jail, you can't deport them all either by force or by statute, and you can't do nothing.

So... ?

Posted by: deadrody at January 31, 2014 11:40 AM (b2D8X)

47 The problem is that there isnt even a conservative agenda for immigration reform in the debate right now. All we get from Republicans is the Democratic position garnished with "border security". If Democrats want something as big as amnesty, we should get something as equally big in return, likethe reform of birthright citizenship for example. No more anchor-babies, which is probably one of the biggest magnets for illegal immigration. But Republicans -including conservative Republicans - dont even talk about this.

Because the GOP is a crony-corporatist party. The corporations want to ensure low wages for non-professionals and have been driving our open borders policy for the last 4 years. They are not "conservative" in any fashion, but pretend to be to garner votes.

Of course the DNC is also a corporatist party, but they combine their corporatist policies with class politics and demagoguery.

Of course conservatives are old "stick-in-the-muds" who believe in the rule of law, but hey are now beginning to realize that the GOP just plays them for suckers...

Immigration reform, despite the best efforts of the anti-immigration hysterics, has not died.

Comprehensive immigration reform of the type Ryan outlined remains popular with the country as a whole and among Republicans. Reform made it through the Senate. The process continues in the House. Optimism may not be in order, but for now there’s no reason to despair.

81 Posted by: deadrody at January 31, 2014 11:40 AM ............It's actually simple and wouldn't require anything major. I have been to Juarez numerous times to do some missionary work on an orphanage. I say this not out of malice to the people because I would do the same thing if I lived there. There's only one reason they come here and it's for jobs. If we actually enforced and penalized employers who hired illegals the problem would go away and yes, they would self deport and or not even bother to come here. It's really not complicated.

All of this talk about "We are with you, but wehave to do it this way if we want to win elections," is now shown to be a total, complete, and abject LIE. It's not about winning elections (other than to put one past "the rubes" in red districts); it's about advancing a leftist agenda.
The NRSC calls out the Senate Conservatives Fund for helping to elect democrats, but crickets when Dick Lugar and John Warner actively campaign for Democrats. The whole dang party machinery is corrupt.

Disagree you can absolutely do nothing. Businesses do this all the time. Freeze hiring and wait for people to retire.

In this case enforce existing laws and wait for illegal immigrants to die off. Stop trying to make it nice and cozy to live in America without the legal channels. I don't really care if they self deport. But if they break other laws as a result of not being able to get a job or find a home then yes they need to be dealt with a criminals who have no right to be in your country.

92 The fact is, this problem is too big and too complex for any kind of "fuck em" approach. You can't put them all in jail, you can't deport them all either by force or by statute, and you can't do nothing.

THE LAWS ALREADY IN FORCE ARE SUFFICIENT FOR DEALING WITH OUR IMMIGRATION ISSUES. Unfortunately, pointing this out results in being called a racist, stupid, or both. We have already kowtowed to Silicon Valley on H visas, multinationals and immigration law firms for L visas, and yes, even the religious right, on R visas. Enough.

We have just seen a federal attempt to hijack one-sixth of the economy to "deliver" services to 315 million people. It is and will continue to be a disaster.

Does anyone here doubt that any legislation will be packed with the same kind of organziaitonal pork that the Dems packed into The Crapulus and The Thing? Does anyone here doubt that high impact states like California, Arizone, New Mexico, Texas, and Florida will have massive amounts of federal crack money dangled in front of them to "help"?

We know how this dance goes. A decade after its passage, we'll be impoverished, awash in yet another wave of moral hazard illegals, and resigned to decline.

No thanks.

93 DrewM fires up the anti-Republican troops again by rehashing the same facts from yesterday. Now because Obama indicates he has no problem with the principals set forth by the Republicans it somehow makes it even worse even though none of the facts have changed. Funny that same logic doesn't apply to his other anti Republican post on the Farm Bill where the majority of the Democrats voted against it and DrewM also was against it.

Listen I understand and don't disagree with the anger but this never voting or voting for the Democrat is emotional crap. Its only logical if you really do want to expedite the destruction of the country. I can see that. May not agree but I understand the logic.

+++++++++++++++++++My neighbor's SIL killed himself leaving two small children behind. The oldest one, a little girl, would ask her Grandma to call him for her--something the therapist devised. So my neighbor, the Grandma, would pretend to dial a number, and give her the phone--reminding her that Daddy can only listen now. She would scold her Daddy telling him that she was mad at him for leaving and missing everything and then tell him about her day. My neighbor was against it at first, but, she said, watching it over time, she saw her Granddaughter got to have her say. Then one day, the child said, "Grandma, I don't need to call him any more, you can throw away that number." As far as I know, the calls stopped.

The Two Party system is broken. 1/3 of the Electorate self identifies as Independent.

Yet you say that the 1/3rds ONLY choice is to support the Repubs who have consistently betrayed them in the past... because they are not as bad as the other guy....

Yet, if enough people make the choice to NOT support the Two Parties... there is a Power vacuum... which WILL be filled....

But until enough people make that choice.... until enough people say they will no longer support the Repubs... the Legal advantages the TWO parties wrote into the election laws for themselves, will continue the two party momentum which (IMO), is destroying this country.

Dems want power so they can give advantages to groups, who then support them with money and votes.... Repubs seem to want power so they can give crony advantages to people, who then support them with money, so they can stay in power...

Some of us have decided to no longer support this Kabuki theatre...

Nope. The consequences of "admitting" that 5% of the population can successfully rebel against federal and state laws, to me, is worse than forcibly grabbing that 5% and putting them in concentration camps. Especially since that 5% are foreigners demanding extralegal privileges.

154 Rebut what points? If I offend you, feel free not to read my posts.

Immigration legislation that grants amnesty--in whatever form or name--is bad for the country. End of statement...you can read above for the other specifics.

There is nothing emotional about saying that if this is a Republican idea, it is still a bad idea. This will be the end of America as an economic and military power. We'll collapse under the weight of the entitlement wave and then we'll drown in the second of wave of illegals that will be drawn here through this perverse incentive.

This is not the ninetenth century--there is no internal frontier. This is not industrial America with long-term linear growth in the need for manual labor. Quit pretending that either apply.

More obscure facts....

Tattoo originated during the Thirty Years War, 1618-1648, and in German was called "Zapfenstreich." At 9:00 P.M., as the call was sounded, all bungs (zapfen) had to be replaced in their barrels, signifying the end of nightly drinking. The provost guard then drew a chalk line (streich) across the bung so that it could not be reopened without evidence of tampering. Tattoo is the longest U.S. Army call, consisting of twenty- eight measures. The first eight are from the French call "Extinction de Feux" and the last twenty measures are from the British "First Post" - in turn adapted from an old Neapolitan Cavalry call "Il Silencio".

Already on the books but sadly isn't enforced. And that's not just a partisan deal. In Riverside CA about 15 years ago, the owner of a major fencing manufacturer got hauled into federal court for regularly hiring illegal aliens. No question he was guilty, he admitted preferring the stability of familial illegal alien labor to American citizens who "just don't work out" (funny how outsiders in a nepotistic company 'just don't work out'). And the judge, a Reagan appointee named Moskowitz, said he just couldn't imagine Congress really meant to destroy his business over preferring to hire illegal aliens.

So he convicted him and suspended sentence.

296 The apologists for the current GOP leadership (sorry, but the term really does apply, and note the narrow targeting) have essentially become ignorant NPR coastal Democrats: their premises are almost all entirely false, their conclusions do not follow even from those false premises, and they (inexplicably) seem to picture themselves as wise and detached statesmen and strategists, while anyone opposing the indefensible idiocy we are seeing are "emotional".

Last evening a very smart and good regular commenter herelaid out some whoppers. "This issue" has been "killing us" in "races all over the country". Utter nonsense. My connections to the campaign biz are extensive and I cannot recall a single winnable close race where anything to do with amnesty would have made a difference (other than a radically different position by a candidate, i.e. common sense anti-amnesty, producing a shocker, which is quite plausible in several border districts). Moreover, the false and revealing allegation that anti-amnesty folks always "scream" their positions indicates more than a problem with false premises.

Jack illogically buttressed his position by citing his imaginary vindication on the govt. shutdown. Summarized/corrected: raising your profile of opposition to a wildly unpopular and surely disastrous national policy (O-care, govt. shutdown) just being launched was a mistake (no evidence whatsoever to confirm this, specific counter-evidence in VA gubernatorial exit polls) and diverted attention from the policy itself.

Meanwhile, the GOP for no practical reason making weaselly noises favoring a wildly unpopular national policy (amnesty) instead of keeping the focus on O-care, all to achieve electoral objectives that are completely delusional, is nothing to worry about. No, worse, these weaselly noises "take the issue off the table" for the Dems - when the issue is not even close to the table (Gallup 3% priority ranking a reasonable reflection of how obscure this "issue" is to most), and in any case has probably never/will never change any electoral outcomes (aside from gutting GOP enthusiasm, as we see continuing on this very page).

Live in or near a major city, or even a mid-sized one?

Know the right guy working out of the back of the right local business and $150 (price varies) will get you a shiny new set of fake ID. Most "undocumented" workers do in fact have documents- fake ones.

They might not be good enough to fool a cop or even a diligent bouncer, but they'll be good enough to allow an employer to claim that they didn't know their new employee was illegal. After all, they photocopied the documents and stuffed the I-9 form in a filing cabinet as required by law.

There's no law requiring employers verify that they're legit documents. Which is part of the problem.

298 “I’m concerned about the fact there seems to be a war on the poor,”
he [Kasich] told the Times' Trip Gabriel. “That if you’re poor, somehow
you’re shiftless and lazy.”

This stupid statement also neatly ignores the fact that the poor when they were still rural--before they were lured to the city to work under slave conditions in factories and sweatshops owned by the Dims who ran the big cities--the poor could feed themselves very adequately. If you could grow a garden, chickens, some pigs, a steer to slaughter, and sustain a dairy cow, you ate far better than someone working for starvation wages in the big city. In fact, Black parents and grandparents who were sharecroppers in the South were often the safety net for their children and grandchildren in the cities. When times got tough in the city, Blacks would pack up the kids and go South because there was always food on the table and canned food to take back with them. I grew up in NW Indiana outside of Chicago and my grandparents lived in Oklahoma. Whenever we made the trip from Indiana to Oklahoma, we would see carload after carload of nice Black families on the road with us until St. Louis and then they would exit for the roads for Mississippi and Alabama. In some neighborhoods in and around Chicago, year around there were as many Mississippi and Alabama license plates on cars as Illinois plates.

No, but the IRS could in a heartbeat.... but Federal Policy is not to use the IRS to detect Identity fraud.

Even when you get a 'no match' letter... it takes months and months of back and forth... and then the IRS does not do anything.

we're getting a greenhouse put in this spring. Not a big one, but large enough to do veggies year around.

Nothing grows in the soil where we live except yucca plants and wild grasses, and even if it did: bunnies.

Going to install solar panels, enough to power the min stuff (freezers, well pump, etc).

BBB. Beans, Band-aids and Bullets, in order of priority.

Have 2 full trauma kits, first aid in ever vehicle, antibiotics.

305 " Don't tell us it's better to preserve your purity than to beat the Democrats."

In`teg´ri`ty

The Republican House has just voted to fund it. When both parties collude, labels matter less.

308 Sometimes it helps to not give a sh!t about what other people say about your ideas. But every once in a while, it's good to see who's following you and who your challengers are.

If the head-nods are coming from skinheads, you've gone too far Right; when the Stalin-humpers are in agreement with you, you're too far Left.

Hey, Mr. Boehner… take a look at who's trying to hump you on Immigration.

316 Maybe the Republicans are going to passive agressively run out the clock on immigration reform before the mid-terms. Everyone knows how hard it is to get anything donein DCeven when they want to do something. That being said, primary all moderates or anyone in support of this actually moving ahead. It is written, so let it be done.

318 ______________________________

Ace,

I have a proposal to make.
The only way the GOP leadership is going to understand how truly poisonous the Amnesty for Illegals issue is to conservatives is if that leadership is MADE to understand that a great many conservatives is poised to permanently abandon the party altogether.

I am not kidding when I say that I will have no reason to vote for Republicans anymore if anything remotely resembling amnesty becomes law due to Republican assistance. As far as I am concerned that's the ballgame.
And I'm sure there are lots of other conservatives who feel the same.

But it occurred to me, why take a half measure? The GOP is clearly not the _best_ party for establishing Amnesty for Illegals. Only Democrats can really get that job done right.
If we are left with _no choice_ but to accept that Amnesty is going to be our immigration policy, why not vote for the politicians who are going to do the best job at providing Amnesty?

So here's my new position. If the GOP is going to insist on assisting in establishing Amnesty for Illegals: I'm going to vote Democrat.
- Not a joke. Not kidding. And I have never before thought of doing such a thing over any issue. But I am serious.

I will not stay home on election day. I will go to the polls and launch the only vote that would seem to make a difference: a protest vote _against_ the GOP for foisting Amnesty on us. It won't be the Democrats' fault - they're 'supposed' to be in favor of Amnesty. But Amnesty can only happen if the GOP makes it happen - and they're 'supposed' to be against it.

Now I realize that it's probably not going to happen, but if conservatives with a microphone (like yourself) started to publicly call for fellow conservatives to vote AGAINST GOP candidates (no matter who they are or their position on Amnesty) that would get the leadership's attention.

The problem is, the leadership believes they need to get this "Hispanic Demographic" issue off their plates before the GOP becomes permanently perceived as the racist, anti-Hispanic party.
Boehner, Ryan, et al. know that this is the perfect time to do it because once they're done they can just pivot back to disastrous Obamacare and the general failure of Obama himself.
They believe the issue of "Immigration" will be forgotten by conservatives the moment it is a fait accomplis, and that all will be forgiven in the name of winning an election cycle for the purpose of getting rid of Obamacare.
- They have good reason to believe this. And as long as they do, Amnesty for Illegals is as good as a fait accomplis.

But if instead they understood that all would not be forgiven... if they understood that their betrayal would be so profoundly serious and offensive that a large number of conservatives will be dedicated to punishing them for the transgression: well, then they just might reconsider.

So if the GOP is going to even mildly assist in establishing Amnesty: I will vote for the real deal. I will vote Democrat.

320 I won't follow _Dave_ in voting for a Democrat. That would be deceitful. I won't vote Republican because they advance the Democrat agenda.

Also, let them suck low voter turnout. If they're going to try to turn the United States into Cuba, they're going to force the United States -- heretofore a nation founded around a state -- into a separate identity apart from the godless ogliarchy they're building in Washington D.C. Let them try preach "our values" when 25% of the country bothers to vote.

A nation that names streets after the REVEREND Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is reachable, politically, by moral argument.

321 I cannot understand why the GOP would EVER fucking do this. I wouldn't doubt that they have a bunch of crypto-dummycrats like Nicole Wallace pushing this crap on us.

322 Principles don't sell anything... Turning common sense Principles into marketable
ideas AND ideals sells. That's what Reagan was good at.

If you have to ask what does this or that mean for immigration....
You've answered your own question of what's wrong with the GOP LOSERship.

The GOP LOSERship couldn't sell ice cream in the desert, or wood stoves in Alaska...

Time for a change to leadership folks who understand how to market conservative ideas and ideals. Time to move on from the Mudfarming LOSERship that only knows how to drag their crony friends out of the burrOcrat muck and on their way ahead of the rest of us Main Street slubs remaining stuck in the burrOcrat muck.

Exhibit A -- Main Street small business and their employees takes a big hit on O-Care roll out while the LOSERship sits on their butts and lets big crony corporations and unions get hauled out of the O-Care muck and are free to move ahead while everyone else is stuck in O-Care muck.

Sucks for you Main Street -- Should have signed up for an Ocrat minimum wage federal contractor job will full benefits... That's where the action is at... Never mind that all this does is suck more bucks from taxpayers for the same amount of gubermint work...

Nothing much to see here -- just move along now...
