Java Problems
OK, I still can't upload things from this pc, nor can I rebuild my site or get comments sections on non-Mu.Nu blogs nor my Guest Map working.
It would appear that I have a Java problem on my "re-loved" laptop that I bought. Any suggestions on how to fix this? It's driving me crazy.Posted by: Everydaystranger at 12:39 PM | Comments (139) | Add Comment | Trackbacks (Suck)

Helen:
re: the Java thing.
Is your recalcitrant laptop running Windows XP with the Service Pack 1 update? Because due to the whole Microsoft Antitrust suit, they nuked their Java in that service pack. You have to install it yourself separately. (might apply for IE 6 updates too, can't remember at the moment.)
Since MS will no longer support their Java Virtual Machine, you'll want to get the one from Sun instead. Here's the download page
If you're using Mozilla/Firebird browsers, drop me an email as there can be a trick to getting it to work.

Hiya Paul-nope, I am bobbing along on Windows 2000, and I took all the upgrades that were on the Windows sheet.
So, do I need that download page one, or...?

That's strange.
None of those things should need Java as far as I am aware.
Do you get any errors or is it just a "I click and click and nothing happens" sort of thing?

No error messages, just clicking and clicking and nothing happens. Weirdly enough, some of the buttons work-ew entry, edit entries, template, weblog config, search entries and view site. None of the others work.
Can't comment on most other blogs, since it just shuts down. And the little window says something like: Javascript (0).

Do you have a pop-up stopper? Okay, dumb question. Try this one instead:
Check your security settings in IE. [Tools | Internet Options | Security tab]
If the setting for "Internet" is High or custom that could be preventing scripts from running.

Jim:
Great minds think alike (and fools seldom differ)!
We walked through her security settings & that wasn't the probelm. In the end, it was a very poorly configured ad stopper that was shipped with the machine. It was also trying to suppress 'popups' but giving really weird errors when doing so, instead of saying what it was doing. She's back up to speed now.
