1 Comment spam and the MT plug-in to close comments were touched on here. I haven't looked into it myself, but it may start you in the right direction.

2 I have a question for the more techie types among us... I've only got 5-6 spammed comments the entire time I've been with MuNuviana... what causes one site to get 300 a day and another site to get virtually zero... is it the site content... is it something in the spambot code that makes it attack a site after it finds a "hole" - if so, why not more followup spam to the ones I did get... anyway, just asking for my own edumacation.

3 I dunno, Bartender, but I'm with Helen. Spambot activity has been picking up over at my place, too. I'd like to know where that code gets posted in the template, and I'd like to understand Blacklist better, too.

6 I've been getting hit with spambots lately. Only about 4 a week, but it's enough to sympathize with Helen.

You can't 'install' it. It's not a piece of 'code' for an individual blog. This is an instruction that gets sent via the command line, to the SQL database on the server that contains all the posts & comments for all of MuNu. We as users don't have access to that database, since the slightest error would screw up every blog on MuNu. Only Pixie has that kind of access.

Given that such a change would effect every blog here, I think it's time that a serious discussion was held about what to do about comment spam on MuNu. it's been bandied about, but no plan of action ever really established. It needs to be addressed, but in a way that takes into account the varying needs of the users, in as elegant (ie non ham-handed, as this particular method would be) manner as possible.

I have some suggestions/ideas, as I'm sure others do, and will start a post about specifically that.

I've also been working on a set of basic information about Blacklist, as I don't think it's ever been explained here, and I don't think everybody knows how to use it, or what the dangers are in it. Unfortunately the whole thing isn't ready, but I guess it's time to at least start getting the info out here.

I have a shoot to do, but when I get back in a couple of hours, I'll get the process started.

9 Helen - a followup on your PC question;

I'm not sure I understand what's happening. When is your computer shutting down? Do you mean that after being on for a period of time, it randomly shuts off without warning? Or do you get a 'the computer is shutting down' warning of some sort? Are you doing anything in particular when the shutdown happens?

What version of Windows are you running?
How old is your PC (approx)? Is it a laptop or desktop? Any additional details about what kind of computer would also help. And why was the fan replaced to start with?

Lots of questions, I know, but hopfully with some more info, we can get you fixed up right quick!

10 There are some MT addin thingys that can be set to run as a cron job that will close comments on all posts... the only problem will be that it will be a system wide procedure and everyone will have to "buy in" to the number of days we want to keep our comments active... I would think anything over a couple of weeks could be safely shut down, as mosr blogs display only the previous 7 days worth of posts... have Pixy let me know and I'll track it down again.

11 On the PC - if the fan isn't working well you could be overheating and getting a shutdown from that event. Check fan function and air flow.
