Comments. Spam. Broked.

Someone has apparently added "com" to the blacklist, preventing people from commenting because their email addresses are invalid. I can't fix it, because I ADMIT THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING!!!!!

There. Is that so hard?

1 Is that what happened! Someone emailed me saying they wanted to leave a comment, but kicked out as spam. *sigh*

Pixy? Paul? Someone? Thank you!

2 It's quite annoying that folks seem to just add the entire list of "found" urls to the blacklist without actually checking to make sure there aren't any little traps...not to mention that just because a particular word bothers them they think it bothers everyone. Or maybe they don't realize it's a shared blacklist, and normal commenters are more likely to be blocked than spammers anyway (since the spammers can even hit the closed comments). Although it seems to me that they would have to manually add a lot of the stuff that's being blocked (like certain drug names and even the email extension at-mail.com--though that uses the at symbol, which I'm not typing so my comment will post).

3 Anyway Ted, if you bring up the blacklist and click the list tab, all 33k blocked items will list, and you can find the one that's the problem and remove it--if you can get the entire page to load without your computer crashing (which I never can). I wish they listed in pages rather than all at once....

4 Oh! And "thank you!" to the person who changed the default search from the last 100 to the last 1000 comments--that makes it much easier to get at the evil suckers...sometimes I had to run the 100 a couple times before all the spam cleared out...now it seems the 1000 often gets it all in one try!

5 Ok, I actually got the list to load up the the "d"s, but there are five entries for "com" and since I can't remove them all at once because the check mark system seems to need to have the entire list load before you can actually delete them, and using "remove" only takes off one at a time (requiring the entire list to reload for each one) I can't get them all...

6 Hmmm....com.... wonder if someone caught it already...

7 I've deleted a bunch of sp*m comments recently. About 25 every morning for the last couple of weeks. I usually try to be careful or just empty the found URLs box and just delete the comment. There was one day I just got too damned annoyed and hit the "Go forth and do my bidding" button without even looking.

In other words if I did this. Sorry. I won't do it again.

8 Susie, the problem is the Blacklist was designed to handle 3 or 4 thousand entries. The MuNu blacklist now has over 31,000. That's why your machine shits itself when trying to load it. Unfortunately, most of those entries aren't protecting anyone anyway, because they weren't entered correctly.

(The list takes 5 to 10 minutes to load on my machine - but it does eventually load.

I couldn't find any com entries to remove, so am assuming somebody else got them.

Note to folks who are removing entries on request - post a comment saying you've done so please, so others don't waste time looking for a problem that's already been fixed.

Susie, note that the entries with com in them plus some extra characters like the / (backslash) that were entered by Pixy are actually regular expressions and should not be removed.

9 Thanks, Paul--I suspected they were legit since they weren't just a word, but I couldn't see what else might have been causing his problem.

Now someone needs to take care of f**ker for Helen...

10 Thanks Paul. Sorry, I was a little occupied over the weekend.

I've grabbed a copy of the blacklist and I'm busy stripping out all the junk. I should be able to reduce it by at least 70-80%, but the program will take a while to run. (It's doing a DNS lookup on every well-formed entry...)

11 It's funny how the same hosting companies keep showing up. Bluegravity and Dreamhost, for example, are real spam farms.

12 Sweep complete. Blacklist reduced from 31,000 to about 7500 entries. It's even possible I haven't broken everything...
