I Wonder

Anyone want to crawl through the Ecosystem, add up all the links for the mu.nu bloggers, and work out what sort of critter we rate as a group?

I'd do it except that it's time for my nap.

Hmm

Good reason to use Sitemeter rather than Blogpatrol.

Of Fish and Marsupials

Munuviana has jumped another couple of categories and is now a Flippery Fish.

And Ambient Irony has transformed itself into a Marauding Marsupial!

I get a lot of those where I live. Both ring tails (so cute!) and brush tails (so not cute!)

Munuvia the Beautiful

For Publius, for Rocket Jones
For Cherry's Ram-b'-lings
For Mookieriffic bloggery
all spread by Susie's pings

Munuvia, Munuvia,
dogs shed their fleece on thee.
And crown thy good with bloggerhood
and Collinize for free!

The irony is ambient
at Pixy Misa's blog
the Michigander's name is Tim
and Tuning Spork's is Bob

Munuvia, Munuvia,
dogs spread their pee on trees.
And crown thy good with bloggerhood
and JenLars' hist-o-ry!

Font Reduction Surgery

Well, I found this whatchamacallit in the dropdown thingee from "view" in my browser doohickey, and changed to "smallest" text size. The list of munuvians returned to the right side, but the calendar and everything else is still at the bottom! IE IE IE......oh.... poo... (that's my new theme song!).

Crusty Crunchiness

In a single bound, Munuviana has leapt from Insignificant Microbosity to Crunchy Crustaceaness!

Though something is slightly odd, as the details page lists both 3 and 8 inbound links at the same time. Perhaps an update is in progress right now...

Meanwhile Ambient Irony has at last escaped birdhood and become an Adorable Little Rodent! Squee squee!

Thanks for the ping tsunami, Susie!

An Answer

First, you need to have Category Archiving enabled. You can find this in Weblog Config, on the Archiving page.

Then, add this in a suitable spot in your main template:

<div class="sidetitle">
Contents
</div>
<div class="side">
<MTCategories>
<a href="<$MTCategoryArchiveLink$>"><$MTCategoryLabel$></a><br>
</MTCategories>
</div>
And viola!

Another question

I like the category feature, and have several already that I use. How can I list them on the side so people can click a category and see just those entries?

In keeping with the theme...

Of blog maintainence and blond jokes, I have some of each....

Reisplay, the Calendar (tho' not the "Calendar thingee" title) and everything below that are showing BELOW the posts for me (though the MUNU blogs are listed to the right as I assume they are intended to be...)

Re: the activity log--glad you saved a copy for posterity...some of the seach inquiries were quite amusing....

Re: Categories--there ain't none! Shall there be some with Pixy Misa's patented cool graphics? Or is that asking too much of the Benevolent Ruler of Munuviana?

Re: blonde jokes--my sister emailed me a gazillion one-liners. Here are a few of the choicer ones:

How Blonde Was She?

She Was Sooooooooooooooo Blonde.....

She thought a quarterback was a refund.
She thought General Motors was in the army.
She thought Meow Mix was a CD for cats.
She thought Boyz II Men was a day care center.
At the bottom of an application where it says "sign here", she wrote
"Sagittarius".
She thought Eartha Kitt was a set of garden tools.
She thought TuPac Shakur was a Jewish holiday.
Under "education" on her job application, she put "Hooked On Phonics".
She spent 20 minutes looking at the orange juice can because it said
"Concentrate".
When she missed the 44 bus, she took the 22 bus twice instead.
When she went to the airport and saw a sign that said, "Airport Left",
she turned around and went home.
When she heard that 90% of all crimes occur around the home, she moved.
She thinks Taco bell is the Mexican phone company.

AND, last but not least .............
She had a shirt that said "TGIF", which she thought stood for "Tits Go In
Front

Ecosystematised

Yes, Jennifer, Munuviana is part of the Ecosystem. Though so far it's among the most insignificant of the Insignificant Microbes, outgoing links will still work fine.

Clearance Sale

I cleared out the Activity Log, since it was getting a bit big. Of course, I saved a copy first for posteriority.

Blogging for Dummies

Trackbacks are a link-tracking system. If, in a post, I was to link to - say - Ted's post about cats Movable Type would see the link, realise (automagically) that it's a link to a post on another blog, and send that blog a ping. Assuming that Ted's blog is working properly, it will record the fact that I have made a comment about his post. By clicking on the trackback link under his post, Ted can see who has linked to him and what they have said.

How do I get the link to go to the post rather than Ted's blog? Well, under each post, where it says "Posted by so-and-so at 11:24 AM", the 11:24 AM is actually a link to the post. Right-click on the link and Copy Shortcut (Copy Link Location in Mozilla) and then paste it into your blog at the appropriate place. Viola!

There's more details to be found in the Movable Type Users Manual, but that's all you need to know to get started.

One extra trick: You can list as many links as you like in the URLs to Ping box, and they will get pinged (ping?) as well, so I can quickly and easily ping all the mu.nu blogs at once. Like this.

Update: Or maybe it will puke on my shoes instead.

A couple of questions

What exactly is trackback? pinging? How does it work? Can you point me to a 'blogging for dummies' site for answers?

Coming right down to it, the "Pixy" part is easy, but is that last bit 'Meesa' or 'Misa'?

Werds is importnent, thass wyy I use so manne uv them.

mu-NU-viana

At least that's how I settled on it after 10 minutes of trying all possible variations.

I'm easily amused.

Ambient Irony

The layout looks kind of weird with the sidebar being longer than the body, so I'll post a few things just to pad it out and make sure it's working right.

My regular blog is Ambient Irony; I go by the name of Pixy Misa (my real name being a secret known to only a few... dozen), and I run the server that hosts mu.nu. Like most of my fellow Munuvians, I'm a former Blogspotter, now a wandering minstrel, a thing of threads and patches, of rambles, blogs and dispatches...

I blog about whatever happens to be crossing my mind when I happen to have a free moment and it looks like it won't get me into trouble. This includes technology - I'm a geek, after all; anime - as I said, geek; funny stuff I found on the 'net; and other blogs and bloggers. Although I'm not apolitical, I rarely blog about politics, though from time to time I'll point to a post or a blog that I think is particularly insightful or informative.

As for me - Well, I'm ten years old, I live in Japan with my mother, and whenever I get the opportunity I transform into my evil alter ego and wreak havoc on the people of Tokyo. Mwahahaha!

Welcome to Munuviana!

From the magical land of Munuvia, where bloggers' dreams come true, this is Munuviana! (Damn, I keep typing Muniviana.)

Coming soon - content! Maybe.

Wow! Cool!

I am posting in a blog that's not even here yet...could this be any cooler?

Dear Pixy, you may delete this entry.... I am overtired and silly (oh, wait--that means I'm normal....)
