I think the battle is startin'

OK, so I told Kang that Pixy had not come around with another space to use as USURP HQ and that I needed my space back, and that damn marsupial kicked me ... with both feet and knocked me right back out of the room. I have attempted to enlist the assistance of Madfish Willie or one of his cohorts, but for some reason, his key does not seem to fit the lock. Pixy, we might need some assistance in this mess. After all, the playin' field is yours, is it not?

Adding an author

On the main menu of the mu.nu login page -- just under the welcome message -- it reads:

Select an existing weblog to edit, create new weblogs, add/edit authors, and edit your personal information.

But, I don't see a way to either create a new weblog or add an author to an existing weblog. How would do either of these things?
(I'm not interested in creating another blog right now, but I might want to add an author to Blather Review.)

Fame and Fortune

MuNu is getting bigger. There's an article in the local paper today that mentions yours truly. Not quite an Instalanche, but I'll take it.

Also I'm still aiming to get the Pets of MuNu post done very early next week. So far I've got Susie, Bartender, Jen's (care of Bartender), Helen, Lee Ann, Mookie (who'll double with Ted), Victor and my own. Pixy and anyone else, can you please try and it get photos to me over the weekend at the latest? No photos of cows though.

4 What Pixy means is that in Mozilla we don't see the aqua boxes that the text shows up in with IE--we just see the words right over the bottles. If you could get the aqua boxes to show up in Mozilla it would be fine!

5 What is the deal with Mozilla not being able to read web sites? Seems like there are many, many issues with that particular browser. If there are so many problems with it, why do people use it? Just curious as to why you decide to use that instead of IE?

9 Bartender - Mozilla works fine (much better than IE) if your HTML and CSS are correct. IE doesn't follow the standards very well; it just splats whatever it wants to on the screen. The fact that something works in a particular version of IE is no indication that it is correct, or will work in any other browser, or indeed will work in a different version of IE.

Tracking system

I know that I have seen an Internet tracking system that lets you know if people have you as a link on their sites, but I can't for the life of me find the URL. Does anyone know? People seem to be finding me from any variety of sites, and I am wondering where people are coming from (and SiteMeter isn't telling me).

Scrolling Text

I passed some scripts over to Tiger and Simon. Now Helen wants to know how to do the scrolling text thingy [I found out in Simon's comments] so I thought I'd go ahead and post the code here and tell you the parameters.

This is the code for the text scroll on my site. [I label all the sections so I can find then faster.]

<MARQUEE LOOP="infinite" BGCOLOR="transparent" width=850>
E-mail your entry for this Sunday's feature - The Champagne Room!
- Remember, there is NO SEX in The Champagne Room!
</MARQUEE>

Marquee Loop can be set to any number.
BGColor can be set to any color value; "none" will display a black background.
Width can be set to any value in px or %; you'll have to tweak this value.
The text can be tagged with any regular text tag; I have bold in my scroll.
Postioning is achieved with normal tags or enclose script in a heading tag.
Scroll can be placed inside any element / container eg in the <Body> in the <Content> in the <Links> or even in a <Post>. My scroll is under the banner code and above the <Content> and <Blog> divisions.

This is a neat way to emphasis a particular event or contest or voting thingys you have going on. Motion draws the eye!

I hope this helps whoever needs it. You can see this in action at Simons World, Madfish Willie's, and JenLab as a preview for Survivor makeover. Enjoy!

2 Now don't take this the wrong way...

How annoying is it to log on to every site that has one of those Amber Alerts running across the screen. Does that piss everyone off? That is the most hideous ugly thing I've ever seen on otherwise asthetically appealing blogs. I don't not go back because they display them. I just ignore them and do what I came there to do - read the blog.

You can set the text to only scroll one time across the screen, then it disappears, never to return again (at least on that visit). Most scrolls are postioned at the top of the page and out of site the moment you leave the opening screen anyway. Surely this is not a reason a person elects to read or not read a blog!

3 I don't mind a marquee I just don't like the way the actual marquee looks with the regular tags. It's all jumpy and stuff.

There are some scripts that do the same thing in a nice, smooth fashion.

6 Jennifer has a good point. I always try to keep pages as clean as possible. Probably because my original experience in webwork was over my own 36K modem. This particular item wouldn't make any difference though. It's a common tag and interpretation is by the browser. No load lag.

I'm on dial up too and it doesn't make my page load any slower. The pictures and the scripts are what slows loading down.

It is a little jumpy and I would prefer to read something a little smootheer myself.

One of the points I made was that it is a way to emphasise something like a contest or make an announcement with. You don't have to leave it up 24/7/365. Use it sparingly and as a tool not a feature.

Use it or don't use it, it's all funny to me. I only posted because two people said something about it.

TV is a totally different medium. TV has motion (and sound) already and any additional motion is distracting. Whereas a blog is a static picture until you scroll the page. It's just sitting there on it's ass not doing anything. So the scrolling text should not be that distracting. Unless of course you are easily distracted, in that case... well, I forgot what I was talking about

18 Drawing attention to itself is the reason for the whole exercise. If you are trying to promote a special event or contest or voting for something, this is a better tool to use than static text. That is my point - use it for special things, you don't have to do this everyday, all day. Use it to announce something like Survivor or final voting for a Drink Recipe Contest, stuff like that. I think it is an effective tool for that type of thing.

Yeah, IE says "hey, that looks vaguely sort of like a close comment tag" - which means you're screwed if you have something like that in the comment.

Mozilla says "Nope, that's not a close comment tag" - which is fine as long as you get it right.

A fellow munuvian informs me that it is from the HTML code but that there are javascripts that will smooth it out. 4 Kevin had an editing error when he was working on that post. He accidentally pasted some entries over some that were set up earlier. He put me back in as soon as I pointed it out. I'm sure you were obliterated in the same accident.

The other two I lost were due to email problems on the part of the hosts where they apparently didn't receive my entries.

I'm kind of thinking Victor may have a point--it seems pretty clear by now, after all the arguing I've done with blockheads this morning, that there were at least a few people who didn't "get" the Carnival concept. Thus, it stands to reason that the quiet dropping of articles has probably occurred before, only we may never know just when or by whom.

6 One of the two was a definite email problem. He had posted before the Carnival saying he lost a bunch of messages that were sent in a certain time period and asked that they be resent. I didn't see that post until after that Carnival was already up.

But there are definitely people out there who don't understand the concept. I shudder to see what would result if Trey ever hosted it.

7 Loosening my tin hat for a moment, I think I can explain what happened with my entries: I submitted three things on one email to Kevin--a Bonfire entry, a Carnival entry, and a note saying I want to be the Caps reporter on Sports Blog. That's my theory, anyway, and Jim--I love ya, man, but something about the bad cut-and-paste doesn't quite sound exactly right to me. It's not unreasonable, but something's still raising hte hairs on the back of my neck be-cuzzzzz...

I went back to Kevin's Carnival, did a search on both 'jim' and 'snooze' and I don't see your entry. Can you enlighten me, please--point it out to me in the Carnival? (I figure cutting-and-pasting his description should do the trick.)

10 I had higher hopes for the CotV than actually worked out. I had a lesser visitor count on the day I was included in it than previous days, or the day following.
Not saying the way it was presented or the host was at fault, just saying perhaps it's been hyped more than realistically.
Now, I must go sling mud on my fellow Survivors....

New Site Design

I just finished doing some stuff on the Survivor site. I was then wondering what I could do with this site. I mean this is our group blog for crying out loud!

Don't you think we should spruce this thing up a little for the holidays? I have a whole bunch of Christmas Themed pics from the nightclub years. I could scan them and do some other stuff with the site. If anyone knows how to program for some rotating pics in a space on the sidebar or can point me where to learn how to do this, I will be more than happy to apply my meager skills to this endeavor. [Actually I'm practicing for my new site designs and need a guinea pig] Plus I want to try a couple of things out to see how to make them work.

Anyway, you guys let me know if you want me to do this for the group! Thanks!

4 Well then screw the holiday thingy then. Didn't mean to step on anybody's toes... just trying to do something nice for everyone... sorry I volunteered.

However, the reason I even brought the point up was that this is the group "home" and I thought that instead of a plain template with the sidebar tweeaks and hacks, that the group would like an upgrade to the look and feel of the site. If everyone agrees with that, I would be happy to take a run at a new design. And if you didn't like it fine, go back to this one - no big thing.

9 Um, Hong Kong was in the Northern Hemisphere last time I looked...

Less grumpy today. The only problem I have right now is that both my modem and my router want to handle NAT, so it doesn't work at all. And my PC at work is having memory errors. And I'm getting strange errors trying to copy files from my Linux box to my Windows box for backup purposes. And I'm nearly out of DVD-Rs, because the new lot of 100 I got is yucky but I haven't had a chance to send them back yet. And two of my monitors are in super-over-bright mode - but I've had that for a while. And the fan on the northbridge chip on the motherboard of my Windows box is making strange noises. (Thank D-g for that - I thought it was another disk drive going.)

But soon I will have two new computers. Yay! (Just trying to find out if a particular motherboard is the regular, Pro, Pro 2 or Pro 3 version.)

Oh, and I need to upgrade Linux on one of the servers at work because it's still running Red Hat 7.2 which has issues with managing large buffer pools. And I need to rebuild a stripe set on the terabyte server. And we're out of disk space on two servers, and the new disks haven't arrived yet.

But apart from that, nothing.

How do you do it

Someone has suggested to Kang that he allow trackback linkage to be displayed on the blog, but Kang told me he doesn't know what to do and asked for my assistance. I have no idea what to tell him. Can amyone assist me to assist a poor helpless kangaroo?

4 I think the time stamp comes from your profile settings modified by your PC's actual clock when you post. If you're in EST then you'll post 5 hours in the future if you never changed your profile from GMT.
