Less Dead
Without actually claiming to be alive, as such, I am now much less dead than I have been for the past five weeks. So if you were wondering when, if ever, I will get around to doing something-or-other - over even answering your email - the answer is very soon.
At least my email seems to have survived the Great Disk Drive Disaster of 26th-30th May 2004 (not a particularly catchy name, I know, but since I seem to be dealing with at least two disk disasters a month these days, that's what I'm stuck with) and they're all highlighted in pretty colours, so I will actually be getting back to you and loading archives and all that cool stuff.

Thingys & Doodads - FavIcon
I was over at Ambient Irony the other day, and noticed Pixy's little icon image to the left of the URL in the address bar and in the tabbed window in Mozilla. I've seen them around, but haven't really tried to find out how it was done. Anyway, I left a comment over at Pixy's and one of his fans left directions. The directions were of a general of enough nature, that I had to do a google search on "favicon".
One of the results was
FavIcons From Pics at Chami.com. It offers a little program that takes your specified image, converts that image to the proper size, gives you a preview of the resuling favicon image, let's you download the image to your box, gives you the HTML code and complete instructions to implement the icon.
Below is the procedure I used to install an image of YellowDog for Madfish Willie's Cyber Saloon and some of the obstacles I encountered along the way.

A website I never set up pulls up a post from my blog.
Um, I was glancing at my stats and saw a referral from a website: www.johnkerryisanasshole.com.
(I'm purposefully not hyperlinking. Try typing it in, if you don't mind.)
When I went out there to check the site + content, it immediately refers me back to this post by my blog-bud Loren:
http://civilization-calls.mu.nu/archives/011911.html
Do you see what I'm seeing?
[rubs eyes] If so, is there anything I can do about it?
Thanks,
Linda

Wow, that's weird. Somehow they've matched the URL www.johnkerryisanasshole.com to your archived page without showing your URL! And the "previous/home/next" links are all civilization-calls pages! What the huh?!
I looked at View -> Source and it's very short.. definitely not your own.
View -> Info didn't look too helpful, but I don't really know what I'm looking at there...
Weird.

Very strange but not weird at all. That is, strange that somebody is doing it but not weird in how they're doing it. They've just set up a frame page and populated it with your site, centered on that Kerry post.
Check the whois on the site and see if you can find the owner. If you don't get to it I'll check it in the morning. I'm curious, just out of time for the eve.

As for an immediate (short term) solution, you could create a new post, copy this one's contents into it, then back date it for the same day. Then 'poison' this post by replacing it with an explanation of what some creep has done by hijacking it, and perhaps 'politely' requesting that the perpetrator kindly fuck off.
Unfortunatley, that means others who have linked to the post won't get to see the real one, but maybe it's worth it, at least temporarily.
Or, you could just edit in a disclaimer about the hijacking at the top of the post.
By the way, I'd say from the bogus address on your last commenter to that post (May 30), he's likely your guy. He's listing the website JohnKerryBlows.com (bogus). The email address used to register the domain is johnkerryblows@softhome.net (an anonymouse email provider). The date of the comment is the same as the date the Website address was registered.
You might be able to trace back against the origin of that email more successfully than using the whois info (unless a phone # pans out) Post the header information from that comment's email here to see what we might be able to dig up on it.
This guy needs to be hunted down & fed to the hamsters.

Wow, you guys, thanks so much!
Unfortunately, the phone number is spoofed: the area code is in Idaho, so that's a bust. Since it's registered through godaddy.com, I think I'll contact the ISP.
From what I can see, the hamster fodder doing this is going online to just set up a bunch of redirect URLS to that one post.
In the meantime, I'm going to put an addendum to the post, listing all the redirect URLS I've discovered so far, and suggesting that the perp consider taking his own g*d*m*f* writing classes, and starting his own blog...
If you guys can think of anything else, I will send virtual chocolate, anime, or ammo, as you please.

I like a previous idea -- but with some added snark.
You could copy/paste the original post and date for the same day but a minute earlier.
Then you could replace the text of the linked post with something like:
"To those who've arrived here through a google search and clicked on johnkerrysucks.com have been the foil of a hacker...etc etc...
and the post is HERE." (provide the new link)
Then you could add something like:
"If you ARE the hacker then you may email me to explain yourself.
Do you think that you're so much bigger than your own conscience that you can just hijack my blog post and that I wouldn't notice or care...?....."
My guess is that he didn't mean to do you wrong, but that he just may not understand what bounderies are.
Just an idea about how I might handle it.....

[grin]
After thinking about it, that's exactly what I decided to do. I poisoned the original post, moved the text to another post with a slightly later timestamp, and explained what happened.
I think I used more courtesy than the hamster fodder deserved, but the really interesting part of all of this is that the referrers list no longer shows the redirecting URLs.
Maybe somebody got the message, eh?
Thanks you guys. You rock.
Cheers,
Linda

That's 'cause the hacker has redirected the link to THIS.
Congradulations! You've called a guy to task and he's moved on to another target.
Now, maybe, whomever he's stolen his identity from this time will not so courteously ream him a new one and he'll realize that he may just hafta write his own frickin' blog!

I hafta say, Linda, your idea of poison and mine are a lot different! I have great respect for how you handled it. You took the high road, and accomplished your goal, which was to get 'him' to knock it off.
the fact he's now doing it to somebody else just shows he's not an 'innocent who didn't know any better', but a dickhead. Glad you're rid of him.
In a few days, you might want to try moving the post back, so your external links will work again. I doubt he'd come back. (As long as your logs aren't showing any hits still coming from questionable url's of course.)
Hmmm... this Toblerone's delicious!

Another Day, Another Challenge
I'm diddling about with Chez Cheese, and it occurs to me I'd like to have categories. Now, I've consulted the MT users manual and looked about at other blogs and mucked about with my template... all to no avail.
So can someone tell me what code to insert, where to insert it, and how to make a linkable list on my sidebar pointing to categories? Also, can I go back into my previous entries and assign them to a category as well?
Or should I just give up and go back to boobie pics what I know?
Thanks in advance.

Assuming you've got the same stuff as I do, this should work:
Login and click "manage weblog" on Cheese Stands Alone.
Click on "weblog config" on the left menu.
Click on "preferences" (along the near top of the page)
Scroll down until you see the bold world "Archives" (or "Archiving" pehaps) maybe 2/3 of the way down.
Where it says "preferred method of archiving", select "Categories", then SAVE it. (but don't bother to rebuild yet.)
At the top again (where you earlier clicked "preferences") Click of "Archives".
Scroll down to the selection and click on all methods of archiving you would like enabled. I (and most) use "Individual", "Monthly" and "Categories".
SAVE it.
Now you can REBUILD the templates.
After you've Rebuilt, click on New Entry. The category field (box) should be over the right top of the main entry body field, and just to the right of the Title field. If it's there, YAY! If it's not, D'OH!
To assign a Category to all of your past posts you'll have to open them individually, add the category in the field and then SAVE.
NOW you'll have to create a sidetitle for the categories to display them in the sidebar since you probably don't have one.
That's probably just a matter of copy/pasting some html. Let me look around.....
Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at May 31, 2004 11:20 PM
2
Here is the html for the Categories sidetitle:
(The word Contents in the second line is what the categories will be titled. If you want to change it to, say, Cultures of Cheese or something, just replace it before you copy/paste it.)........
Contents
">
Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at May 31, 2004 11:28 PM
3
D'OH!!!!! That html did post!!! yikes!!!
Well, it's easy enough to just go to Blather Review, click View -> Source and scroll down 'til you find the html. Though the parentheses will be those sharpy angled thingies, it'll look alot like this:
(div class="sidetitle")
Contents
(/div)
(div class="side")
(MTCategories)
(a href="($MTCategoryArchiveLink$)")($MTCategoryLabel$)(/a)(br)
(/MTCategories)
(/div)
Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at May 31, 2004 11:33 PM
4
First, go to your Weblog Config. Select Archiving. Put a check in the box left of Category. [SAVE]
Next, open your Main Index Template. Copy the following code into your sidebar where you want the list of categories to appear:
<div class="sidetitle">
Moldy Cheese [Archives]
</div>
<div class="side">
<MTCategories>
<a href="<$MTArchiveLink$>" title="Read all the <$MTCategoryLabel$> posts"><$MTCategoryLabel$> (<$MTCategoryCount$>)</a>
<br />
</MTCategories>
</div>
This will give you a list of categories, the number of posts in that category, and title popup when you hover over the link.
You can add categories in your post edit screen or use the categories in the left toolbar to add several at one time. Don't foget to [SAVE] after using the sidebar method.
As for adding the categories to old posts, I recommend adding your category list first, then use the power-edit mode to assign categories to old posts via the drop-down menu in the category column. [SAVE] & [REBUILD] after you finish. It will take you a while to add categories to all the old posts, have fun!
One thing to remember... your rebuild times will be increased every time you post or comment due to the extra archives being rebuilt.

Crapola... I guess Spork and I were answering at the same time.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 31, 2004 11:38 PM

Also, you can assign more than one category to each post. The add secondary category link will appear after you save your post the first time.

Mozilla Madness - Radius Corners
I noticed over at Rob's new Xset design that he had really neat rounded corners for all his boxes. I thought that was a neat effect to soften the hard edges of most common designs.
I've been poking around the last week or so trying to look at different methods for making these rounded corners. I discovered several different methods, but none that are really fast and easy. All methods involved images and adding 1 or more div classes to your CSS and Main Index Template. All but one method were static width solutions that would not resize with a liquid width column.
Until I ran across this gem while I was looking at some WordPress templates.
-moz-border-radius: 10px;
This code, inserted
after the other border declarations in that div will result in a bordered box with rounded or radiused corners. This will only display in Mozilla browsers. I guess you could say it is a bonus for using a standards compliant browser.
If you want to selectively insert radiused corners, you would use the following code to achieve a radius on each corner of the box.
-moz-border-radius-topleft: 10px;
-moz-border-radius-topright: 10px;
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 10px;
-moz-border-radius-bottomright: 10px;
It appears to me (on my monitor anyway) that the bottom radii render a a bit more jagged than the top radii for some reason. Maybe it's my video driver or just something on my end.
Below is a thumbnailed screen shot from
Madfish Willie's Cyber Saloon. I went kind of crazy and radiied everything with a corner. All the radii are 10px, the comments are 9px, and the comment numbers are 8px top and 9px bottom.

If you are using Mozilla, you can see a better sample of the effects by looking at my skins - Purple Lines & Purple Lines Mozilla.
If you are not using Mozilla, I highly recommend dwonloading and installing. Then, mess around with it a little bit. Make sure to go through all the menus and look at the neat stuff there. Whatever you do, get off that POS IE from Microsoft.

I'm using the ALA custom corners technique but it was a bitch to implement. If you dot mind IE users not getting the full effect then using Moz Styles is the way to go.

I saw one that used images for the top an bottom of the sidebar elements, but that was a fixed width solution. That was the easiest all-around solution for a fixed width element. Sadly, nothing that eloquent for liquid width elements.
As far as IE users, they just have to miss out for now.

Cool.
I'm planing to do rounded corners in my new layout, and this makes it much much easier.
And people who persist in using IE deserve what they get. Or in this case, don't get.

Well, I've always liked it... when I got around to visiting. You guys should maybe say more about your links than you do. Or, like, when Miss Kitty linked to the giant fish: embed the photo into the post. The problem might be that you're not showing enough and a reader has no idea if clicking on the links is worth it. Or, maybe you need to develope more of a structured story-line; something that'll give us more insight to life around and beyond the black hole. Well, now you can be a Giant Man-Eating Alligator or Tyrannosaurus Rex or even a Drunken Idiot if you choose to be.
All you have to do is modify EZ Bear's Ecosystem script. I got this from our very own Toasted Marshmellow,

Miss Apropos.
Here's how to do it:

Yanno what? I don't recall WHERE I first saw it, but I think you may be right, Tiger. If I had to guess where I saw the change-up of the TLB stuff, it was more than likely on Pixy's site.

There was a period shortly after the script was made available when the Ecosystem site was down a lot - which meant your blog would have problems if you were using the script.
So I just hard-coded mine.

I don't know if I was the first, but I hadn't seen anyone else do it at the time.

Help a Munuvian Out?
Not me; Ace of Spades. He could use some design assistance, as his archives are not currently accessible the way things are set up.
I recommended Rob at

the look
Have you ever seriously courted a woman who made you feel as shy as a teenager at a high school dance because you felt a special attraction to her? Have you taken your time during that courtship, being careful not to rush the relationship, because you didn't want to fuck things up?
Did you bide your time, handle everything like a total gentleman and then finally see THE LOOK? I have, three times in my life.
THE LOOK is something that you can't plan and you can't schedule. It happens when the time is right and you'll know it when you see it. It's all in the eyes, which suddenly seem to sparkle like the stars in a clear, midnight sky. If you look closely, you'll see a strange combination of surrender, challenge and fear in those eyes, and if you look too deeply, you'll feel as if you're one step away from plunging off a cliff into deep, mysterious waters.
You feel surrender, challenge and fear, too.
When you see THE LOOK, you know that the woman wants you as much as you want her. She wants you THIS NIGHT and she's ready to give herself entirely to you. The touch of her hand suddenly feels different. She walks more closely with you. A kiss on the sidewalk turns into an embrace and you want to burn with a blue flame from sheer passion. You want to meld with that woman's soul.
You don't have sex after you've seen THE LOOK. You make love, and it feels wonderful. After that first night, you'll never see the same look again, but you'll always remember it. And it will send tingles down your spine.
I haven't seen THE LOOK in a long, long time, and I miss it.

Is it me or Susie?
A few days ago I cloicked ontp Practical Penumbra and got a post from February 20th titled, I think, "Sheesh! Learn to spell!". I refreshed and I got the current page.
But, for three days in a row now, all I can get -- refreshments included -- is that dang Feb 20th post.
Is anyone else having this problem? Every other blog loads fine. I'm in Mozilla 1.6, but I get the same result in IE.

It seems to only do that on my home computer with the dial up. I do not remember such happenin' on my office system through the cable. Of course, my memory is not that good anyway.

Daniel was right. I replaced pp.mu.nu with practicalpenumbra.mu.nu in my blogroll and I got to the current posts. It's not the server or the URL itself, though, since Madfish got to the current page through my blogroll. Hmmm.

I got the same behavior with Susie's blog in the last couple of days too.... by following a link of her own from one of her comments elsewhere. The linked address was pp.m.nu, and when I typed in the full blog name instead, the current page came up fine. Maybe the abbreviated addresses are somehow being pointed to the old server?

More Tech Questions
I have a bouquet of them this time; let me know if any of you have the answers:
1) Do I need to figure out a way to place my SiteMeter icon on pages other than my main page? Another blogger told me I need to do that--but since it's on my sidebar, shouldn't it know whenever someone visits my site? I tried to figure out how to get the icon to display when someone follows a permalink back, but I had a hard time with that. But I do know that I'm still getting more "page views" per week than I am "unique visits." So it must be counting pages other than the main page. Right?
2) Does anyone know the html for an em-dash? I have a "cheat sheet," but it doesn't work. Unless I'm not supposed to be placing the given code in < >'s. Please advise.
3) How do I create an RSS feed for my site? People are asking, and I'm lost at sea on that.
Thanks so much for all your help--past, present, and future. You are the bestest friends a bloggirl could have.

1) Cut and paste your sitemeter code into all your archive templates. That way when anybody access them they wiull be counted as a visit. That is when sitemeter is bothering to even count. They miss about 40% - 50% of your visits. Compare their numbers with your cPanel numbers and you'll see what I mean.
2) Try [& m d a s h ;]Take out the spaces between the & and ; If that doesn't work go here for more codes.
3) I think Jim is the resident MuNu RSS expert. Have you tried a MuNu search or Google search?
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 28, 2004 02:04 AM
2
I *think* this is how it's done.
To place the feeds on your sidebar:
1) First, check your Templates within MT: you should have RSS 1.0 and RSS 2.0 available.
2) Go to your Main Index, find the place on your sidebar that you want to include these links, and add these URLs:
RSS 1.0
RSS 2.0
If you need more help, let me know.

DRAT. Let's try this again.
(Without the square brackets. Place them in regular brackets, i.e. "")
RSS 1.0:
[a href="http://littlemissattila.mu.nu/index.rdf"]
RSS 2.0:
[a href="http://littlemissattila.mu.nu/index.xml"]
Posted by: Emma @ at May 28, 2004 03:25 AM
4
Ms Emma: replace the < bracket with & l t ; (take out the spaces first) and MT won't parse the code.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 28, 2004 03:34 AM
5
Emma's got it exactly right and those files are out there and working. Most aggregators should be able to find the feeds by themselves but go ahead and put the links up. Never hurts to advertise. ;-)

I ran across some code over at the MT Support Forum the other day. I think you may like it. It's just a few lines to count the total number of blogs entries, total number of comments, and a comment/entry ratio. I modified it for my site and put it with my other site statistics like the sitemeter and ecosystem scripts.

Total Comments: <MTBlogCommentCount><br />
Comments/Entry:

echo number_format(<MTBlogCommentCount>/<MTBlogEntryCount>,2);

Thingys & Doodads - Best of Me
Let's say you want to display a list of links to some of your best posts... the stuff you are really proud of (my list would be empty, but that's another story)... how would you do that?
I was doing a blog tweak for Linda at Auteriffic, and she asked me if I could do something with a select category for her poetry to display in the sidebar. I don't think this is what she was looking for, but it exactly what you need to display a "best of me" series of posts in your sidebar.
Enable your category archives.
Create a
Best of Me category.
Assign that category to the posts you want to display.
Cut & Paste the following code into your sidebar where you want your list to appear.
<div class="sidetitle">
Best of Me
</div>
<div class="side">
<MTEntries category="Best of Me" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="<$MTEntryPermalink$>">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
</div>
I have the code sample up over at the
MadLab, at the bottom of the sidebar, if you want to see what the output is. I used an existing category for testing. There are only four posts in that category, but you'll get the idea.

That's sweet. Could you do it so they are grouped by their main category? So the output would look something like:
Category 1
post a
post d
post f
Category 2
post c
Category 3
post b
post e
Posted by: Jim @ at May 28, 2004 01:33 PM

I think it would look something like this:
<div class="sidetitle">
Best of Me
</div>
<div class="side">
<b>Category A</b>
<MTEntries category="Category A" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
<b>Category B</b>
<MTEntries category="Category B" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
<b>Category C</b>
<MTEntries category="Category C" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
</div>
I haven't tested it, but I'm sure it would work just fine for your site.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at May 28, 2004 01:40 PM

That would work for picking categories by hand. I was thinking of assigning the "best of" category to whatever posts are the really good ones and then displaying like I have mine now. Breaking all of the "best of" ones out by their other category.
Can you specify two categories? Like yours above with one addition:
<div class="sidetitle">
Best of Me
</div>
<div class="side">
<b>Category A</b>
<MTEntries category="Category A" MTEntries category="Best of" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
<b>Category B</b>
<MTEntries category="Category B" MTEntries category="Best of" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>
<b>Category C</b>
<MTEntries category="Category C" MTEntries category="Best of" sort_by="title" sort_order="ascend">
<a href="">
<$MTEntryTitle$>
</a>
<br />
</MTEntries>

Comments go ker-splish
Hello Munuviana! I got an email this a.m. from my blog-bud, Loren. He wrote:
Linda, we have a problem with the site. I was posting replies to comments -- this is how I'm going to handle comments from now on (and I will post a notice to that effect) -- and got bounced off at about 11:25. Couldn't get back on again until almost 1 a.m., and this is the fourth of fifth time this has happened.
Not sure that this was anything but an ISP hiccup, but has anyone else had probs posting comments late at night in the N. Hemisphere (like maybe during a backup, or something)?
Just wondering's, all.
Cheers,
Linda

We did have a problem for about an hour - and depending on where Loren lives, it may well have been that. Verio was updating one of their routers, which is the same thing that took us off the air for a few hours a few weeks ago.
Those are the only two outages I'm aware of, though.

I have honked up my blog. Not bad mind you but honked it just the same.
Could I get somebody to look at my
individual archive page/style sheet to see why the boxes and labels associated with them don't show up on IE but look GREAT on mozilla.
I am a world class moron who doesn't make backups before I change stuff.
Help a moron get a clue. Have pity.
Update:the boxes are 'there' you can click them, mru's show up, but highlighting won't select them. help.
Update: Feh, got rid of the html style crap that came as default and now it works swimmingly. Thanks for all the help everyone!
