Bandwidth Bandwidth Eek!
Guess who has these Sitemeter stats:
VISITS
Total 137,903
Average Per Day 3,655
Average Visit Length 1:14
Last Hour 2,331
Today 34,117
This Week 25,588
Bandwidth consumption, which had started to slow down, has now shot through the roof. I'm going to contact my hosting company and see if I can move to a higher plan without moving servers. I mean, well done guys, but so far today we've had more traffic than we did in the whole of March.
Oh, yeah:

Er, sorry about the bandwidth thingy. I've went ahead and switched my main page to only show half as many entries. Also, a fellow munuvian has offered to help me reduce the size of my pics so that they will suck less bandwidth. Call it a belated birthday present. But Aussie Lord of the Munuvians, have no fear....I believe this is a temporary spike related to a couple of posts that got some extreme Googlage.
Another thing to boast about for we few and proud sons of Pixy Misa is that Ace of Spades has hit the big time and is now a Playful Primate.
PS-Just checked sitemeter. With 2 hours left to go in the day I'm pushing 48k unique visits today. Whoa!

Just as a matter of preference... I always set my graphics to save at either 75 or 96 dpi... and then I set the compression level (most of my files are jpg) to 50%... I haven't seen any image degradation on any of the images I have optimized to those specifications and no one has whine or complained about it, so I guess that works...

Hi Rusty!
Congrats on the traffic - I just wish it was with regards to a happier event. Oh well.
I've emailed my hosting provider (Liquidweb) to see if they can help. Looks like we'll hit 50GB for the day....
I think we'll be okay for this month as long as you guys don't get any more big stories to break, but I'd like to have a margin for comfort so that you can just blog and not have to worry about this sort of stuff.
The thing is, the server costs $160 per month including 500GB of traffic, which is great, but after that it costs $1.50 per GB, which is not so great. We've never gone over the limit, and obviously I'd like to keep it that way.
(Of course, $1.50 per GB is nothing compared to internet providers in Australia who charge up to $150 per GB. There's a reason the server is in Michigan rather than here in Sydney...)

The problem is that I have always run these stories about you know what, along with pics, only now the terrorist zombies are doing this kind of thing daily!!!
Willie, ok, so how do I do that??? Is there a certain program you use for manipulating gifs and jpegs?
More bad news...it looks like another big day today!! Sorry. Pixy, if I started running blog ads and then donated some cashola to you would that help?

I use the image editing software that came with my scanner... MS Image Composer will do it also... on the menu 'File - Save As' there is a checkbox at the bottom left and a slider bar on the right that will left you increase the compression settings... let me know if you need anything else.

Any decent graphics program will do that for you. If you don't have a decent graphics program, you can download 30-day trials of Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, and JASC Paint Shop Pro.
Or download Irfanview or Xnview, which are very nice file viewers that can also do basic image manipulation, and are free.

I really hate to ask it...
But I need help on my homework... or more importantly the Research Paper that lets me graduate!
Heh. So anyway, I have to write a research paper, and I need 7 sources. Only 1 can be a website.
My topic is:
Does a* government have the right to limit what people say on their blogs?
Now since its apparent that my main source of information is cut off from me, I've found a way around it. But it requires the help of bloggers. I can interview people to get the information I need. Idealy I would most like to talk to the bloggers in other countries, though my offer is extended to all. (I'll give ya links if you help... even though I'm not blogging-eh). So if you could email me at mookie_riffic @ yahoo dot com or leave a comment with your email, I'd really appreciate it.
*as in any government, including and not excluding the U.S. but I think the US is pretty clear on it.. ya know, the whole first admendment thing
So... Please?

Keeping everybody straight - a request
With the recent population explosion at Munuviana, it's getting harder to recognise what sites people are from just by their first names (usernames). This can be particularly difficult here when folks post their questions and the person who wants to help can't tell what your blog address is from the post. Moveable Type can automatically take care of this by turning the 'posted by' link on each of these posts into a link to your blog, but you have to tell it that's what you want. (By default, it just links to your email address, which isn't always instructive.)
So, a request to all MuNu's. Go to your main menu page (its the first one that shows up after you log in to administer your blog) and click on the
Edit your profile link on the right hand side of that page. On the line that says
Website URL (optional), fill in your blog's address (http://myblog.mu.nu). While you're there, you can look at the
Nickname box , as that's the name that will be displayed in your 'posted by' on your blog, and here at Munuviana. (
Update: Sorry, the Nickname field is NOT currently being used as your 'posted by' name here, and it's not enabled by default on many of the basic templates. Changing that will be the subject of an upcoming post.)
If everybody does this, I think it'll make these group areas much more useful to each other.
And if any of this isn't clear, just ask.

Tom:
Not sure why you'd want to go through all that extra work, for something that's easily handled automatically? (Especially since someone would have to create & update a separate list as well)

Archives Question
This is probably one of those annoyingly simple things that is confounding me at the moment: how do I set up our archives so that when someone follows the link back to our page it shows just that particular entry, plus comments, instead of the whole durn archive for the whole month?
Thanks!

Good question. It's either in your template or your weblog config. Make sure that under "Weblog Config" > "Preferences" You set your "Preferred Archive Type" to individual.
This should make the permakink point to the individual page. If that is already set then it's a template issue.
Could you post the URL of your blog and give me a shout if you need anymore help.

Referrer's Log in Javascript
Near the bottom of my sidebar, I have a script to list my referrers from the last 24 hours (original source here). Sometime in the last couple of weeks, it went wonky on me, only listing one or two people. But, and this is really odd, it's only acting up on my home PC, and if I check my site from work the referrer log is nice and long, like it should be (and used to be at my home PC).
Here's the snippet from my template, which hasn't been changed (I've replaced the 'greater than/less than brackets with square brackets):
[script language="Javascript" src="http://blog.mu.nu/referrers.js"][/script]
Any ideas for what might be happening?

Oh, And...
A couple of you are waiting for replies to emails. Hi Linda! Hi Elizabeth! My computers at home blew up, and although my Linux box is back up and running (all I needed to do was repair some mirrors and fsck a one terabyte filesystem), my Windows box, which is where my email is - has gone completely insane. I need to back it all up and reinstall it - which will be the third time this week.
Anyway, I'll be getting back to you this weekend, and then after that it's the Carnival of the Munuvians (for real this time!) And then... stuff. I have to get pets installed on the forums or my life won't be worth living.

Well, I knew since I still hadn't received a response from you that this would be the next logical place to look.
I'm sure all of this stuff going on with your computer impedes your ability to set up new munuvians, which was my question(s) anyway. I guess you'll get to them when you get to them.

Do your computers need band-aids? I got Scooby Doo. I got Spiderman. No? Not that kind of "blew up"? Ok then.
I can live without archives. My gratitude at being part of Munuviana is such that I could, if necessary, blog naked.
However, if archives are in my near future - woo and hoo! That much the shorter that I need to be straddling two blogs.
Rock on. Please let me know if I can help. Which is akin to the snake offering to pitch in for the shoe convention, but it's the thought that counts, right?

Munuserver Mk 3?
Apropos of our recent boom in hits and our ongoing growth in members, I've been shopping around for a new Munuserver.
This is what we're currently running on:
Athlon XP 2500+
1GB memory
2 x 80GB disks (mirrored)
120GB backup disk
500GB bandwidth per month
Fedora 1
CPanel & Fantastico
This costs $160 per month.
This is what I'm looking at:
Dual Xeon 2.4GHz
1GB ECC memory (ECC = extra crunchy)
2 x 200GB disks (mirrored)
1500GB bandwidth per month
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
CPanel & Fantastico
Urchin web analyser thingy
About twice as fast, three times the bandwidth. Same amount of disk space, effectively, but it's all mirrored. $219 per month.
I think it's a good deal, but I'll hunt around a bit more. And then we get to move house again.

Jes' so's ya know!
I was checkin' the munu blogroll and saw some blogs I didn't recognize. One was S A P S A which stands for San Antonio Polio Survivors Association, I learned. I actually have a brother-in-law, now in Tennessee who survived polio, but I know very little about his battles. He seems fairly fit now, although I do know he has some abnormal musculature in one leg, but otherwise seems to be fairly normal and fit. I perused this blog, and there is some postin' of a general nature, but the main reason I mention such is because of the design. It was another of those done by Hammerhead and Pamibe, and, this one is superb eye-candy. Welcome to Munuviana S A P S A!

Need help with obscene spam
In the last 2 weeks I've been getting lots of obscene comments posted to my site (lettersfromnyc) and I've had to delete them all manually. This morning I was lucky I only had 10, but that's because I keep checking/deleting frequently and only keep comments open for my 4 most recent posts. The spammers all use unique IP addresses. All this typing has caused my carpal tunnel syndrome to flare up again.
I've checked MT's help feature to see what to do but other than "sanitizing defaults" and adjusting the "Comments template" there's not much. At Munuviana archives there's mention of a plug-in back in Nov '03 but that was prior to MT blacklist being added to the current MT version we have (if I'm not mistaken).
I'd appreciate it if anyone could provide me with some specific solution on how to permanently block these commenters/comments. Thanks.
UPDATE: thanks Rachel Ann, it was set up but I just didn't know that link at the bottom of the comment was how you de-spammed!

I'm posting to you what Jim of Snooze buttons told me to do...Beyond that I'm in the dark. I was getting annoyed by a certain body named bob.
Here's Jims advice: Do you have Blacklist turned on? Go to http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-blacklist.cgi. Go to the "configure" page. Make sure that you have check boxes for trackbacks and comments to be filtered. Once you've got this turned on there will be a link at the bottom of each email notice you receive for trackbacks and comments. Just click on that link and you will be brought to a page where you can delete the comment and add the applicable url's to the blacklist, all with one handy button click.
Hope it helps (I would be lost without Jim, Madfish and Linda....really really lost!)

If I wasn't buzzed, I would pullin' my hair
Is it me, or is anyone else havin' problems gettin' their files replaced on the server? Here I am in the middle of recreatin' my template as well as reworkin' my css file and I cannot get the pages to upload right. How do I know? I have saved and rebuilt the css file three times, then asked to view the file once the rebuild is done, and I cannot find any of the changes I made to such file. I am givin' up, I guess, for awhile. If it looks bad, it will get better. It is readable, I think. It ain't like I was up to postin' much of anythin' today anyway. I am kinda sad. I hear Zongo is in a real bad way.

Tiger:
Make sure you clear your browser's cache/temporary internet files each time you want to view your changes... it may be that you're seeing your page served up from your temp internet files each time, instead of live from the web.
And just to double-check... you are hitting the 'save button, as well as the 'rebuild -> indexes buttons, right?

Internet Explorer can be particularly stubborn about not reloading files.
It always helps to have another browser in these situations.

At times when using IE, I have to hit refresh two or three times to actually see the saved/rebuilt changes.

Yep, I had cleared all my temp files and such, and reloaded several times, as well as change the URL from tig.mu.nu to tiger.mu.nu as well as add index.html to such and still havin' like major difficulties gettin' updates to show. I am still not seein' some of the latest changes made to the css file, and if you go to http://tig.mu.nu/index.html you will see the calendar at the top of the right column which was deleted from the index template sometime last night. I have been seein' some problems with css files properly downloadin' when visitin' several different munu sites, as well, over these past couple of weeks.

[I am leaning toward 2 columns, wantin' to javascript the hit parade ala NZB, and open to other suggestions. Madfish? You must be buried!]
I have been thinkin' 'bout doin' some extensive renovations on my blog template and .css files, but thought I might put the situation out for comments and any suggestions, bids, or ideas from the professionals. Come on, ya'll munuvians, lend me your thoughts on my blog.

Welp, I don't what you have in mind, but I like your colors. I'm not a fan of three-columned blog, though. They're just too busy and leave little room for the actual content.
And, unless you've got something really good in mind, keep the banner. It's very distinctive.

Well there are loads of 3 column templates out there but I have to agree with Spork... My 3 col layout gets real crowded at lower resolutions. But if you want some help implementing the code then give me a shout.

I'm with Rob and Spork on this one... anything under 1024x768 resolution is crap for a 3 column design... with the aging of the baby boomers and the accompanying vision degradation, more and more people will be using 800x600 resolutions... I did a design for Eric and he said that at least half of his readers were at 800x600... FWIW

Pull Down This
I have updated the Pull Down Menu with all the latest MuNubies.
A couple of thoughts - when
earlier I sent out a cry for help - thank you
Mr. Willie and
Tuning Spork - our great and exalted leader
Pixy Misanoted this in a comment:
I've confirmed that the Javascript lists definitely aren't working with the Ecosystem, so I changed Ambient Irony and Munuviana over to PHP (which definitely does work).
I guess this means that links from this script aren't working with the Ecosystem either. I haven't the slightest idea what to do about that. Can this PHP (whatever the hell that is) do a pull down?
I guess I have some Googling to do!

I'm sure it could... try this:
=Make a text file of your current code and name it pulldownA.inc
=Upload file to the regular archive path at MuNuviana
=Insert this text into your index file where you want your menu to appear: <?php include('http://munuviana.mu.nu/archives/pulldownA.inc'); ?>
That should work... if not let me know and I'll try to work out any bugs and test it on my site...
Note that you'll have to have a php enabled site!

By the way... I thought Jim had confirmed that the ecosystem was counting the pulldown menu links???

PHP gives you a full programming language to do clever tricks with, whereas HTML is only for markup. But any HTML file is also a valid PHP file; PHP only looks at stuff enclosed in the <?php and ?> markers.
No, it will leave your old HTML files around so that links will still work.

Madfish is right. Only, it's not your usual troll I'm dealing with. Nevertheless, I have sent a hat-in-hand letter to Pixy asking for help with my situation.

Thank you for caring. Really.

Do we have any attorney's amongst our horde? It would seem to me that this troll would be considered a stalker or harasser or something to that effect, and that there could be some type of restraining order served that would take care of this crap? Or am I just a freak?

Isn't RP an attorney?
My college roommate is a lawyer and a blogger...I can ask her what legal action can be taken if you would like, Emma?

I'm not really sure anything can be done. She's not been "threatening" per se; just unable to accept the fact that she is no longer married to my husband and unable to accept the consequences of her own actions.
I don't know very much about the law (other than my legal assistant specialty, Immigration Law -- LOL) but I would think that because what is posted on a blog is considered "public domain" then she's just as free to search for my page and leave snarky comments as I am to mock her mercilessly for doing so. And that is what I intend to do. If she shows back up -- and I intend to reopen my blog under my real name -- I will ban her, post her IP, mock her -- whatever it takes. She's a freak and she will be publicly declared so. Heh.
If there IS anything that can be done, though, legally speaking, I would be greatful for any advice.
Thanks,
Margi

What about a password protected blog? Emily has one, and they're still popular. That way you can check and control those who enter. Also you can have a "temp" login, in case you're not sure of the person, and a "real" login for nice people who miss you, like me.

Password protection would be easy... there are several threads over at the MT Support Forum that explain it... if Margi/Emma is interested, I'd be more than happy to do the research and coding for her.

Actually, a combination password/cookie setting thingy would be ideal... login with password once then have a cookie set so that you didn't need to login after that... I might need some help figuring out how to do that....

I am an attorney, and I am not sure what you can do. However, in many jurisdictions, the close family connections may make "family violence" laws effective in this situation, at least, sufficiently so that you can ask for a protective order.
My troll reappeared today and made a nasty comment. I first changed the tone of it so be supportive of myself, but after thought, decided to just delete it. In either case, I am makin' a strong statement that I am in control of the situation. Trolls feed off of response, because it indicates you actually read what they had to say and got upset enough to react to their words. The most proactive approach is to jes' delete the comment, therefore erasin' their words and givin' them no indication whether they are read or not.
The very best way to deal with any troll is to ignore their communications, and, when you have the control to do so, to delete everythin' they have to say without any comment.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Madfish? I think I may end up going with WordPress which has moderated comments built-in (and it's free!) but since I've donated to MovableType in the past, I could probably afford to buy the newest version -- eventually.
As for ignoring/deleting comments, I have done that. I intend to keep on doing it. I will have my say, however, because it's high time that this abusive person realizes that she is not going to make a victim out of me. A protective order is a little hard to enforce 1200 miles away. The Internet surely has squeezed the world into a much smaller place, hasn't it? ::: snort :::

Margi:
The idea Madfish describes is essentially TypeKey. It's already built and in-place for MT 3.1, which Pixy is looking at, and could undoubtedly be set up for you. If it was done as a one-off install for you, it would fit under their free license. (It would mean maintaining your own install, but you'd be looking at that for WordPress anyway.) I'm virtually certain moderated comments is available for MT as well.
Go with whatever you feel will work best for you. Just wanted to make sure you knew there were MT options so learning a new blogging tool wasn't the only option.

I'm still tinkering with MT 3.1, but I'm quite happy for Margi to be our guinea-pig.
It certainly works, I'm just trying to find the best way to make it available to everyone, and hopefully avoid some of the limitations we currently have with the way I installed MT 2.6.

:::waves to uber-sexy Paul::: Thanks, Paul, MFW, Pixy, EVERYONE. You guys are the greatest.
I couldn't believe it, but yes, Madfish, the Fantastico installation IS the latest version! I'm just finished with the initial setup and. . .
OH. MY. GAWD.
WordPress has got it goin' on, people. It has moderation of comments, password-protected posts, blogrolls, skinning, EVERYTHING built right into it!
Slicker n' snot. Fast. No rebuilding.
The only thing I don't like is that it's not as effortless in manipulating uploaded pictures as with MT. Other than that, it's cooler than the other side of the pillow.
I'm up and running. I still have some tweaking to do, so let me know what you think.
Pixy, I love you!! Thankyouthankyouthankyou! What kind of cookies are your favorite? (I'm NOT kidding.)
