Grumbling in Three Columns
Wooohoooo, I finally got three columns using just a style sheet. No tables, frames, etc. on this blog, thank you very much. Stop by and check out the new look. If enough folks ask, I'll even write up a HowTo on implementing this for any site.

Please do. MuNuby here, setting up my template, and I'd love for it to have three columns. Thanks.

I'll start working on it, but expect it to take me a couple of days. This is going to be a fairly extensive post. And before I can write it I'm going to have to make my templates generic and put a bunch of commenting in to help make what I'm doing clearer.

Thanks Jim.
Okay folks, the first installment in how to make three columns work is up. There's two ways to make this work. The first is, you could simply copy my templates and style sheets, add the left and right column content, as appropriate, and make some other minor changes (banner source, for example). Alternatively, since I put some comments in the templates, you could use them as a source of inspiration to roll your own. In a couple more days I expect to have the full HowTo ready.

Looks good Eric! The only problem is loading, one of the last objects on the lefthand column takes an enormous time to load, so it delays loading the rest of the blog.

Hey Oorgo, there's two "slow loading" problems. One is fixed by the expedient of being removed from my site. Helmets to Hardhats was loading slow AND, for a variety of reasons, had ticked me off anyhow. So, gone. The other is TTLB, and they are always slow. I fixed that by putting them last on the page, or nearly last.
Last, but not least, John Lanius over at TexasBestGrok showed me a trick or two in his stylesheets that helped out as well.
Now I'd say the load is improved yet again.
Thanks for pointing that out.

I haven't had a chance to check out what Eric has borrowed or adapted from my code, but my site loads the middle column immediately after the banner, so none of the TTLB or other scripty things delay the display of my content.
If enough people are interested, I would be happy to scrub my stylesheet and main template for generic use. In the meantime, if you would like a copy of either (unadapted), please send me an email and I'll send you a copy.

What I borrowed was, essentially, the arrangement of the columns.

Yes, I'm Lazy
I have a question for the Great and Powerful Pixy Misa: Does MT 3 have little shortcut buttons (like those for bold, etc) for font color and size? I've noticed that Typepad has them and (gasp!) so does Blogger and wondered if we could get them...

The standard installation has bold, italic, underline, url, email and quote buttons.

That kind of wysiwyg functionality can be hacked into MT3, but it's not native.
Oh, and Typepad's version ain't nothing to aspire to. It's seriously broken for many, many users. (a real sore point)
Susie, ther are a number of alternative applications you can write your post in that have great editing functionality, from which you then upload to MT. Some are deluxe and can be configured to connect to MT automatically - kinda like a deluxe desktop version of the MT post window. Others are just a nice, basic editing window from which you copy and paste to the MT post window. If you use Firefox, there's a sweet little extension that allows just such simple editing.
Lemme know if you're interested.

Heh... what was I (not) thinking?
In the Mozilla suite, you already have the functionality of the Firefox extension by default. It's called Composer. I don't have a build of Moz here at work, but I'm pretty sure it's under the Tools menu? It might even be a toolbar button.
Once activated, it will open a new window, with the kinds of controls you're looking for at the top. You just type in your entry, edit as you wish, then when you're ready to copy it to your MT post page, look for the button on the toolbar that looks like this < > (I think). That will toggle you between code view, and wysiwyg view.
Once in code view, just copy everything from the Composer window, and paste it into your MT window. You can also copy it into a text file on your own hard drive to make an offline backup.
See if you can make it work from this description. I'll check it out more when I get home & check back with you just in case.

You can also compose in the Blogger editing window & copy & paste the raw html to MT.

Deferred Trickle redux
I finally got around to reading this post and cannot get it to work. Deferred category? Check. Category archiving? No idea. I've looked in the Category Archive and don't see where it gets turned on or off. I've created a post, assigned it to the category errata, with deferred as the secondary category. Saved-draft- and nothing happened. Of course I'm missing something; of course I am. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's caught people before. When you say "nothing happens", you mean nothing happens on you main page? 'Cause of course that's what's supposed to happen. (at least until the Trickle date you've set.)
If this isn't what you mean, then it's likely Jim's point about getting 'turned on' first.

It's running fine right now, but it looks like it got slow a little while ago.

I'm getting a lot of hits from Speculist right now, but not enough to slow the server down, only about 1 a minute, or so. However, I did notice the server was very slow a little while ago myself.
Posted by: Eric @ at May 13, 2005 03:09 AM

When we get a spam flood, it often happens that 50 or more blogs get hit all at once. That brings the server to a screeching halt.
What happens then is that Fluffy the Spamhound sniffs the scent, and leaps into action, disabling comments or trackbacks (depending on the type of spam) and killing all the incoming spam. Once the coast is clear, Fluffy enables the comments/trackbacks again.
It should only take a few minutes for this to happen, but while it's going on, the server can be really slow. If you see the server running slow for an extended period, do let me know.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at May 13, 2005 03:13 AM

Oh, and I am looking at ways to fix this. One way is Minx, another way is Movable Type 3, which handles this rather better, and yet another is moving from a single server to a small cluster.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at May 13, 2005 03:15 AM
6
The reason I asked is that I noticed it running really slow for about an hour. I figured if it was Fluffy, it would be shorter... but it was in and out, so maybe someone is playing fetch with Fluffy tonight....

Notifications
Hello there!
I was wondering why the notifications don't work. I would like my blog readers to be able to receive notifications through e-mail when I publish a new post (and I'd like to be able to have this feature on my blog as well). I've tried adding e-mails to the notifications section but nothing worked.
Can this be helped?

It works but the notification system is manual. After you post and the page comes back up letting you know that the post was published scroll down a bit to the notify section. You'll have options to send the whole post, part of the post, and/or a message. I used to use this on my Zero Intelligence blog until I got too many subscribers and too may posts and went to a listserv system.
Incidentally, I'm using PHPlist for the notifications now and it's great. It's in your Cpanel.

Look in your stylesheet template for a line like:
color: #101010;
This will probably be under the portion of your stylesheet dealing with your blog entries themselves. color is the font color, bgcolor is the background. If your color is the same as your main bgcolor your words will never show up. Email me your stylesheet template if you want to.

Okay, I'm looking at your style sheets tonight. I'll let you know what I think. I did notice that you have some styles in your header as well. Your best bet is to merge those into a single style sheet. Any styles in your header override any centralized style sheets that you call from the header. That's okay, if it looks good. But, it does cause a problem. Later, if you want to make a change you will have to go to multiple locations to update your style. It's a lot easier to just update the styles once, in the CSS.

Mr. Peabody, the Wayback Machine isn't working...
Ok, I was playing in CP panel and found a sleeze hotlinking to a pic of my beloved aunt when she was a young novice (using her as his icon on a music board with the name "runny canker"--yuck!). Since I had to turn off hotlink protection a couple of months ago when it forgot my "exception" list (and there are a couple of hundred of Alliance members using my logo image so I don't have time to reconstruct it) I did the only thing I could think of, which was change the picture he linked to by uploading a different picture and overwriting it.
Now, here's the problem: When I went to edit the post to explain the fact that the photo referenced was now something completely different, the edits would NOT show up on my blog. The picture is changed, but my explanation doesn't appear (despite the fact that I saved and rebuilt my site and etc.). So, apparently there is a time limit for editing posts? Can anyone tell me what the time limit is? And is there anything that
will allow me to edit an old post?

Handy URLs are available
Old timers know about these but I'm sure our recent importees don't. You can have a "handy" URL for your blog. Especially for the folks with long URLs this can be very...um...handy. Here's an example of how it works:
My regular mu.nu URL is
http://snoozebuttondreams.mu.nu/.
I also have a URL of
http://sbd.mu.nu/.
You may notice here that "sbd" is way more convenient to type than "snoozebuttondreams". These two locators are completely interchangeable.
http://snoozebuttondreams.mu.nu/archives/061784.html is exactly the same as
http://sbd.mu.nu/archives/061784.html in every respect. They open the same page and handle everything identically. I use "snoozebuttondreams" for my official published URL but I've got "sbd" for when I'm tooling around my own site.
If you would like a handy URL just sound off in the comments here. If I set up your mu.nu blog myself I can get you set up lickety split. If I didn't set you up I'll forward your request to the Great and Mighty Pixy.

There's a problem with that. If you use the shortcut to open an individual entry, for example, someone who links to you will likely use it to link to a post. But Technorati won't catch it as a link to your blog. The TTLB Ecosystem will catch it if you give it your alternate URL. So if you care about your Technorati status, don't do this.
Posted by: David Boxenhorn @ at May 12, 2005 01:46 PM
2
The links built by MT will always use your "official" URL. That is, your permalinks will always have the long name, even if you got there with the handy one.
Example - I sign a comment with sbd.mu.nu as my url. Somebody follows that to my blog. They see a post they like and open it up with the permalink. The url on that permalink uses my default url, not sbd.mu.nu. Same thing if they right click on the permalink and choose 'copy url' - they get the full url, not the handy one.
I don't think there is much of a problem here with Technorati, unless you are actually sending somebody a link using the handy url. But how many times have you typed out a full url including "/archives/postnumber.html" and sent it to somebody? I just right click on a permalink when I want to send a url to somebody.

Yes, but...
We only have a 100-user Urchin license, and we have about 150 blogs, so it doesn't work for recently-added users.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at May 11, 2005 11:56 PM

On the other hand, I can manually assign users, so if some people want Urchin and others don't care, I can set it up to suit.

One other thing - Urchin is just something we happened to get with the current server. If we move servers, we'll still have CPanel, Fantastico, Awstats and so on, but probably not Urchin.
And since our traffic has grown by 50% in the past two months I am looking at moving servers again - this time probably to a small cluster. I have a nice option of three Athlon 64 servers lined up as a possibility.

Site URL in Blogroll
Would it be possible to generate the blogrolls using the site URL from the weblog config? That way we could each have control over the how our own URLs appear in the blogrolls. This is important to me, personally, since it is different from the URL that I try to publicize, and Technorati can't figure out that my two URLs point to the same site (despite my efforts).

Technical question about Sitemeter
Someone left the following comment over at my blog:
Hey, just noticed that your site meter isn't on your individual pages so you are probably really undercounting referred visits!
Not sure how you would do that on your site, but you can probably figure it out. According to Right Wing News it will really make a difference in your count.
Is this person correct? And if so, how do I go about fixing the problem?
Thanks in advance.

Put it in your individual entry template - just before the </body> tag.

Just to be clear, this is the Individual Entry Archive template that you're speaking about, correct?

And you can put it right after your first body tag if you want to be sure to grab every person who even visits your page for a second (if they navigate away before your entire page loads and sitemeter counter is at the bottom, it won't get counted).

Files and images
I think Helen asked this a while back but I cannot find the post...
I would like to download some image files I've already got sitting somewhere on my site. I tried using File Manager in Cpanel and it has the subdirectory but I cannot see the actual files. Can someone please tell me how I can see the files in each directory and then download them?
Thanks.

To upload files, you need to make sure you're in the subdirectory you want, then click upload files. Fill in the files you want, and click to upload them. If they have loaded successfully, you should see them listed below the subdirectory folder when that folder is active. I haven't had any problems doing this. I don't have any idea what might be wrong if the files aren't transferring properly....
If you think the files have been uploaded, you can try opening the url for the file you want, http://you.mu.nu/archives/subdirectory/file.ext, just to see if it's there....

OK but how do I FTP?
Here's my problem. I know there are files sitting in http://simonworld.mu.nu/newdesign but I cannot seem to access them, even using File Manager. How do I get to them? I tried uploading a file to that directory via MT but I got an error saying I wasn't authorised...

I'm obviously going to have to download an additional FTP program. SmartFTP has only two options; passive mode and force port IP address.

Yepsolutely!
From the manual:
For example, to display the 6 most recent comments made on any of the entries in your weblog, and sort them in reverse chronological order (most recent first), you can put the following into your Main Index Template:
<MTComments lastn="6" sort_order="descend">
<p><$MTCommentAuthor$> said:<br />
<$MTCommentBody$></p>
</MTComments>
For each comment in the list of comments, the text and tags inside the container will be displayed. Each of the tags below are used to display a particular variable piece of a comment.

Fixed now.
What's up is that anyone can block spam using our shared blacklist, but sometimes people (accidentally or intentionally) end up blocking words that other people would like to allow. So it's a bit of a compromise.

Reformatting Archive Entry Links
So, I'd like to reformat the way my archive entry links display. Specifically, I run weekly archives and use this code to display the links to the archives.
<MTArchiveList archive_type="Weekly">
<a href="<$MTArchiveLink$>"><$MTArchiveTitle$></a><br />
</MTArchiveList>
This ends up looking like this:
October 31, 2004 - November 06, 2004
I'd rather have it look like this:
10/31/2004 - 11/06/2004
I've looked for a way to do this, but couldn't find it. Any suggestions?

Have you tried using the date formatting options? I don't know if they work for the archive titles though. Something like <MTArchiveTitle format="%d/%m/%Y"> might do the trick.

I've tried that one and it just leaves me with a big blank spot where the archive links should be. I didn't think it would work since it wasn't mentioned in the manual. I actually did RTFM, amazingly enough.
