Incoming trackbacks should be working now.
Outgoing trackbacks should be working anyway; that happens automatically whenever you post. If you're not getting an error, and the other site is not receiving them, the problem is most likely on their end.
If you have some specific examples of sending trackbacks not working, I'll take a look.
The thing to remember is that more than 99.8% of trackbacks are spam. A lot of sites have simply turned them off, or implemented spam-filtering so strict that it blocks a lot of valid trackbaks.

They're not spamming you, they're spamming munu's Movable Type installation. They just hit everyone at once. Saves them a lot of time.

It looks like it's the image of "This Cat" that's pushing your sidebar down, it's too big. Try resizing it a bunch, I bet that'll work.

Rachael, I looked too and I agree with Oorgo. I make sure ALL of my pictures are 100 pixels smaller than the posting area and my side bar pictures are 20 pixels or so smaller than my side bar. That should work... I think based on screwing up my blog the same way many moons ago.

Cpanel Woes
Hello all! Long time no see!
trying to return to blogging, and went into Cpanel to start fixing things up and when I logged into File Manager what did I see:
"[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]"
and below it near the trash can:
Unable to change directory to /kei/home/nick/.trash! You do not seem to have access permissions! (System Error: Permission denied)
Sad! Did I break something?
Also, how much of a learning curve on Minx? I was considering Word Press instead of MT, but noticed Minx is rising into use. Can a neophyte pick it up pretty easy?

The test system will be up this Sunday.
You can use it in parallel with MT. Entries and comments posted in one show up in the other.
There's no need to sign up. I'll be posting instructions here, and people can move across in their own time, though I'm gradually going to stop supporting MT.
The only real work involved is creating the new templates for Minx, but I'll help out as much as I can with that.

No, it's not the fuckheads in Turkey.
If you blacklist a site, and there are square brackets in the URL - these critters: [ ] - then MT Blacklist will choke and die. But it doesn't know any better, and will let you add the item to the blacklist anyway.
I suspect that the spammers are doing this deliberately to mess up people who are using MT Blacklist. On the other hand, MT Blacklist has been discontinued and is completely unsupported now, so we have to stop using it anyway. But if I just turn it off, we'll drown in spam. 1300 spam comments a month? Wait till you're getting 1300 a day.
So I'm having to write a whole new comment system, which will be ready in a couple of days.

Help, I'm Drowning in Spam! (Updated)
I got back to inspect my emails for comments and found that I have about 1300 new comments, nearly all of which are spam! This brings up a few questions:
1. Is there a quick way to list all of the comments submitted, say, in the past month and then delete those determined to be spam? I noticed that there are a large number from one spammer, so can I add that email to a banned list?
2. How do I shut off comments, until I can figure out what to do about this? I've gone into the blog configuration menu and changed the "allow comments default" to "closed." Will that do it for my old posts as well as my new ones, or do I need to do something else?
3. What to do? Is there a way I can allow users to comment by having them use Typekey or go through some other sign in process? I guess Kansas doesn't live here anymore...
Update: Michele, could you email me [demosophia-at-gmail-dot-come]? I can't seem to find your address on your blog. Also, I can't seem to add a comment to this post. I get that same "up-phuqued" error message.

I think I might have inadvertently deleted the comments to this post, because I didn't know that I had "permissions" to do so, and I deleted about 1400 at once thinking they were all on my blog. By the way, I apparently also have deletion privileges on the Jawa Report and Anticipatory Retaliation. Those tend to get in the way, because I don't want to delete comments in those blogs. Can I remove myself from the permissions list somehow, so that those posts aren't included by MT-Blacklist?
Posted by: Demosophist @ at June 22, 2006 09:16 PM

Also, I'm still getting comment spam because I can't close comments on all of my posts at once, only future ones. Is there some way around this?

Foruming With Minx
So, I hear you cry, how do forums work in Minx?
I'm glad you asked!
Forums are blogs. Blogs are forums. (And also Wikis, but we'll come back to that later.)
To view your blog as a forum, all you need to do is add a couple of new templates. For Munuviana, these are:
mxForum
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html><head>
<title>Minx/MT: Dynamic Pages for Movable Type</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://blog2.mu.nu/minx.css" type="text/css" />
</head>
<body>
<div id="container">
[include banner]
<div id="center"><div class="content">
<h2>Munuviana Forum</h2><p>
<table>
<tr><th width=50%>Topics</th><th width=15%>Comments</th>
<th width=15%>Author</th><th width=20%>Posted</th></tr>
[posts:here template=Forum.Post]
</table>
[magic.pager]
[magic.stats]
</div></div>
<div id="right">
<div class="sidebar">
[include recent]
</div></div>
</div>
<div style="clear: both;"> </div>
</div>
</body></html>
mxForum.Post
<tr [if post.even]bgcolor="#f8f4e0"[/if]>
<td><a href="[post.url]">[post.title]</a></td>
<td align=center>[post.comments]</td>
<td>[post.authorlink]</td>
<td>[post.date]</td>
</tr>
And viola! Forums!
To really work like a forum, the posts need to be sorted by date of the last comment, rather than the date the post was entered. Minx can't do that yet (at least not with the MT database), but will.
One little note: the post.even flag is true if this post is even numbered, counting the posts on the page from 1 to N. Yes, there is a corresponding post.odd, and some other flags for breaking posts into groups of three or whatever.
Then, all you do is add the option
form=forum to the URL to tell Minx to pick up the mxForum template instead of the default mxPost template, and you're done.
You can use the even/odd widgets to do a two-column blog like
this, but it only really works if all your posts are the same length - or if you have a 100-word excerpt for the front page (which Minx can generate automatically, but I need to test that).

Nice forums!
FYI, my initial reaction upon reading of all your troubles is wishing I could hire my own hacker to counter attack AND simultaneously shoot their own HOT BIRD satellites out of their sky.
BTW,I wonder if they're sending sooper sekrit coded messages to the No. Koreans. They're letting the No. Koreans know they've got them covered if they decide to launch an attack against the US. I think they're saying in that turkish email they've got our Hotbird/star wars satellites anti-ballistic missiles in their sight and want to do the same with them as they did with JAWA, take them out.

Things Will Improve
Sorry about the mess lately. Between the attacks and the various hardware glitches and a couple of screwups on my part, munu hasn't been as stable as you deserve.
Fortunately, my personal chaos of the past week is nearly over, and we have a new server on the way to take over the Jawa Report. So we've downgraded from Chaos Level 5 to Chaos Level 4, and over the next couple of days we'll get back to Chaos Level 2, which is background radiation as far as my life runs these days.

Turkish Digital Anti Terror Team
I believe in coincidence but, given the recent DDoS attacks, I did find it odd and/or funny that I (and several other mail recipients at yahoo.ca) received an email from the "Turkish Digital Anti Terror Team." Their alleged email address is turkishdigitalantiterrorteam@fast.fm.
Anyone read Turkish? The sole content was the subject:
Hotbird uydusunu vuracak delikanli araniyor
Yeah, I know. It probably says they have amazing offers for low-cost watches/prescription drugs/penis enhancers/teen girl porno.

Hot-bird is a satellite.
uydusunu - satellite
vuracak are going to strike

araniyor - looking? also can be used as a surname.
So maybe - Young araniyor is going to strike your satellite hookup.

This is almost as bad as Finnish.

Splat, Again
Kei suddenly crashed. I got the techs to reboot it, and two minutes later it crashed again.
Rebooted again, and currently working, but disconnected from the net while I investigate.
Annika sez:
i heard a rumor about a hacker threat?
Yes. It's a group of Turkish Islamist hacker-wannabe's going after The Jawa Report. They can't actually break in, so they've settled for a Distributed Denial of Service attack which takes us offline.
Unfortunately, the shared filesystem I built to keep us going in these situations decided to choose today to drop off its perch, so I wasn't able to bring everything back up on the other server. Right now, I'm copying everyone's files across, one blog at a time.
Which doesn't work for the Wordpress blogs, unfortunately. Which is why I never wanted to host a large number of Wordpress blogs. They're dead easy to set up, but it's a royal pain to manage them all.
Bah. Need chocolate.
Update: Okay, I think it's all fixed, except for The Jawa Report, which will be back as soon as the attack is over.
I have managed to separate things so that when an attack starts, we can just block it, and only The Jawa Report will go offline.
I finally worked out what was screwing everything up - the private network between the two servers went wonky. Now that
that is fixed, we seem to be fine.

Pixy, as much as I love WordPress, I'll switch to Minx when everything is set up... I'd no idea it was a hassle - I'm so sorry!
Anything I can do to help, like backing up my database every day myself, etc...? Let me know, and I'll be happy to do whatever...
Thanks!

Sheesh, I was all ready to call my ISP back and do some hard-core screaming until I found Pixy's alternate site was also down.
There is at least some satisfaction that The Jawa Report is hitting the right nerves, but the important thing is to get the site back up so those people can continue to be pissed off. I doubt there's anything any of us can do that Pixy isn't doing, so again, and always,
Thank you Pixy.
(of course, if there is anything we can do just say the word.)

Pam - When everything works, WordPress isn't a problem. Infact, it uses a lot less resources than Movable Type.
The problem is, for every WordPress blog, we need another copy of the code and another database, and it gets hard to keep track of them all. That's why some of the WordPress blogs went awry after the first attack.

Chris & Vinnie
I'll check in with the network guys.
At the moment we have The Jawa Report isolated from the rest of mu.nu. That means that when it gets attacked, we can shut down just The Jawa Report and everything else keeps running.
But if we get attacked and we don't shut down The Jawa Report, the server will die.
So we have to be pretty sure the current attack is over before switching it back on, or we risk losing everything again.

Okay: Our hosting company has their budget servers in stock again, so I'm going to grab one and put the Jawa Report on it. Once things settle down we can use it for other stuff as well, but for now, that will at least keep the attacks from wrecking everything else.

I think. I just left a query with the network guys to get their advice first.

Would it be possible to give Jawa Report an alternate URL that would still work when the main one is being blocked?
Posted by: David Boxenhorn @ at June 17, 2006 06:31 PM

David, there is one, mypetjawa.blogspot.com.
However, with Rusty gone, no one else has access to post there.

Can you investigate 'Round Robin' hosting on 3 servers to eliminate the possibility of such DDOS Attack?

URLs are not the issue. IPs are the issue. If you give Jawa Report a different URL which resolves to the same IP, then the only effect is to lose Jawa Report all its readers because they can't find it any more.

I've ordered a new server for the Jawa Report, but it could be up to 48 hours before everything is ready.
Hang in there!

URLs are not the issue. IPs are the issue.
All (most of?) the munu blogs are on the same IP, and I see that Pixy has managed to keep them up despite the DDOS attack on Jawa. So why not Jawa too, at another subdomain?
When Jawa gets its own server, could it be mirrored on one of the other servers for the inevitable DDOS incident?
Posted by: David Boxenhorn @ at June 18, 2006 06:39 AM

I could put the Jawa Report up at another URL, and will do so if Rusty asks. But if the attackers find the new URL and attack there, the server it is on will go down.
So I'd rather hold off until the new server is installed.
