Did you mean "colorblind?"
I can't understand you foreigners half the time. Sheesh.
I can read them just fine. From top to bottom:
Beer
Fosters
Outback
Koala
Eucalyptus
DDOS
Filthy Ottoman Turks
Surfer
Aborigine

I can read them better than Beth's at My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, in all seriousness.

Thanks David, that's a very useful site. Now that I'm building something that's going to reach a lot of users, colour-blindness is something I need to take into account. (I did know that there are different forms of colour blindness; also that it's statistically pretty certain that someone at munu has some form of it.)
Judging from that site, they should work okay for most colour-blind people.
And Vinnie, I downloaded the software that Beth is using, but it's in PHP and Minx is written in Python, so I can't use it directly. It's pretty good, so I might adapt it at a later date. On the other hand, it takes as much code to generate Beth's captchas as it does for the whole of Minx so far...

I am, at least according to a dot test I took as a kid. Here's what I see (haven't read anyone else's responses, and I'm holding out a small hope that I'm not really color blind.
lettuce
fern
buffalo
kangaroo
mule
petunia
chincilla
anaconda
buffalo
In that order from top to bottom. Pretty easy to make out.

Same CPanel Problems
Not to pick a nit, but I've not managed to get around the CPanel error I've been having. Even after trying something that Mr. Miyagi might recommend (log out, log in) I'm still getting the problem in the file manager, which prevents me from uploading anything. After logging into CPanel and clicking on File Manager, I get this instead of a directory listing:
[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]
It's also not remembering prior logins and the contact e-mail address. All of this is, of course, quite over my head, so any help is appreciated.

That Was Quick
We're getting spammed through the Minx comments. It has only a trivial spam-prevention mechanism right now, and it looks like they've gotten around it.
Time to take it to level two, I guess. Before we go live, or anything like that...

Yes.
Wordpress doesn't support multiple blogs. There are efforts in that direction, but they're not making a whole lot of progress.
Running 250 Wordpress blogs would be a nightmare. Not for you, but for me. Running 250 blogs in Minx is no harder than running one.
Also, Wordpress sucks.

If there was any viable alternative to writing an entire blogging system from scratch, believe me, I would have taken that alternative.
Wordpress is hopelessly non-viable. Movable Type 3.x and Expression Engine would work, but have license restrictions that prevent us from using them. LifeType is a mess, with plugins required for basic functionality. And everything else is even worse.

Awstats Round 2
Well Awstats seemed to work for me yesterday afternoon for a short while, but is back down again. I keep getting this screen shot:
Error: Couldn't open config file "awstats.everydaystranger.mu.nu.conf" nor "awstats.conf" after searching in path ".,/home/helen/tmp/awstats/,/etc/opt/awstats,/etc/awstats,/etc,/usr/local/etc/awstats": No such file or directory

Example: http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=mysite
- Did you create your config file 'awstats.everydaystranger.mu.nu.conf' ?
If not, you can run "./../../tools/awstats_configure.pl" from command line, or create it manually.
Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

OK seriously, I can't post on Jawa
Well, I can post. It's just that it never shows up on the blog. I get the message indicating that changes have been saved, and I looked to make sure the post status was "publish." The list of recent entries includes my post.
But it never actually shows up on the Jawa Report.

The Jawa Report is on a different server now. You need to go to blog3.mu.nu. (You might have received an email from Rusty by now.)
Unlike blog/blog2, it's actually using a different database.

Pixy,
When I post, the window never stops saying, "Rebuilding the post "xxxxxxxx"..." even after I can see the post on the blog. I hit the Stop button on the browser and it didn't seem to break anything.
Is this a problem?
Posted by: Chris @ at June 29, 2006 04:07 PM
2
Me too also. That is, when I post to Jawa it never seems to appear. It does, however, indicate that my "changes have been saved." It's just that the post never comes up on the blog. (I know Rusty has a post that's riding on top, but I never get in below that either.)
Is it something I'm wearing?
Posted by: Demosophist @ at June 29, 2006 07:29 PM
3
No, different problem.
I can post, but it never stops rebuilding the site, even after the post appears on the blog. I have one that has been rebuilding for 10 minutes...the post appeared 9 minutes ago.
I'm trying to figure out if I am breaking anything if I close the window while it is still rebuilding.
Posted by: Chris @ at June 30, 2006 12:06 PM
4
OK, I can now post. If it just keeps rebuilding the post I generally just click the "stop" button. At that point I think I've sent all the information required, so it'll just keep rebuilding on its own, if that's what it's doing. The other possibility is that it's done rebuilding, but not courteous enough to tell my browser. That happens a lot on forums and blogs, where the "I'm done now" message seems to get lost.

Add the following line:

I finally copied and pasted the info into a doc that I keep on my computer so that I can refer to it when I need it. I bookmarked the link but forgot which of my many bookmark folders I stuck it in. So, I ended up looking for it several times and it always took me a while to find it - I figured it was easier to just keep a copy I could find rather than lose the bookmark and have to search each time. *grin*.

Seems to be working for me. Here's another spam question. How is "questionable content" determined? If I understand the blacklist, it is a list of banned URLs. I want to understand how the content of a comment is analyzed and what is causing some to be rejected.

Will the same line work with trackbacks to "older" posts such as: " MTClosePings old="15" inactive="10" with the carrot marks?
If so, after what line does it go?
Posted by: GM Roper @ at June 29, 2006 05:04 PM

Steve - The blacklist isn't just banned URLs, it's banned anything. So the word "phentermine" is banned, for example, no matter where it appears in a comment.

Yes.
Ignore it for the next couple of days.
I've been forced to turn off the blacklist because people keep breaking it.
See also the posts on this page about MTCloseComments.
In a couple of days, a new spam filtering system will be in place, and it will go back and delete old spam as well. Until then, you'll have to live with it.

Alright Then
MT Blacklist was screwed up yet again.
I've turned it off.
That means you will get more spam. Possibly
lots more spam. But only for a couple of days. Then the new comments system will be in, and it will go back and zap the old spam for you automatically.
Sorry about this, but if people won't pay attention when they're using Blacklist it just screws things up for everyone.

Feature Set Makes Pixy's Head Hurt
Minx June Update
Okay, brief rundown on the state of play for Minx:
It's up and running here.
You can make it work for your blog (or any munu blog) just by changing the blog= number. You can find your blog number by looking at the address bar when you're logged into Movable Type; it should say something like: http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt.cgi?__mode=view&_type=entry&blog_id=14
For example,
here's Ace of Spades in Minx. Note that for anything other than Munuviana, Minx is running off the default template set, which isn't as pretty or as well-tested. I'll be pushing some of the Munuviana template features back into the default set over the next few days.
You can
view your blog as a forum - though that's only set up for Munuviana right now. All that is, is a different page template; the form= option selects the alternate template.
The Minx user interface is also entirely template-driven. If you don't like it, you can overrride
everything.
Minx recognises Movable Type users, MT login cookies, and MT comment cookies. Well, there might be a glitch with the MT comment cookies, but that will get sorted out, and they
mostly work.
Posts and comments entered in MT show up immediately in Minx. Comments entered in Minx don't show up until something triggers a rebuild in MT. I have a database table set up to record Minx activity so that MT will know when to rebuild, but it's not live yet.
Comments in Minx have very simple spam protection, and don't use MT Blacklist at all. I'll be applying the same sort of automatic statistical filtering as I have with Snark, which nailed something like 99.5% of spam with almost no false positives before it died during the DOS attack. What will happen is that comments will be accepted with just a simple IP/name filter, and then the statistical filter will come along once a minute and zap anything that turns out to have been spam.
We'll also have registration for commenters - this is nearly ready now. If you already have a munu Movable Type login, that will work for comments as well. If you're registered, you'll be able to edit your comments - though I may set a time limit on this to prevent abuse. You'll still be able to edit comments left on your blog, of course. Posts and comments that belong to you, on your blog or elsewhere on munu, will have a little edit link next to them. Click on the link, edit away, and you're done!
Format Format Format!
You can still enter HTML by hand if you want to, or the good old mix of HTML and blank lines. Minx handles that just fine.
You also have a fancy-pants WYSIWYG editor, though it needs to be smacked around the head until it stops using bloody <span> tags. The editor works in Firefox/Mozilla (except that it uses span tags), Internet Explorer, and Opera 9. Under Safari, Konqueror, older versions of Opera, and other browsers, you'll get the standard text box.
I'm
also adding three (maybe more, but at least three) markup languages:
BBCode,
WikiText, and
Textile. BBCode is up first, and will probably be in place today (though not complete). All of these do automatic filtering of your tags to make sure that the resulting HTML is valid. If you forget a closing tag in BBCode, for example, it will automatically fix it for you.
BBCode will also be supported for comments.
BBCode in posts can also be used to process simple template tags into the body of the post. I don't know exactly why you'd want to do that, but you can. You can do that with macros too (remember macros?) And you can mix HTML and BBCode (and macros), and you can use BBCode (and macros) in the WYSIWYG editor, though they won't be very WYSIWYG then.
Oops, gotta run, back later.

It means that we get to stop using Movable Type and use neato-keen Minx - without having to do any messy exporty/importy stuff.

Unfortunately, I'm on MT3, so I have to either convert back or convert Minx to MT3.

Just took a look at BBCode. I don't get it, it looks just as hard as HTML. What's its added value?

1. Square brackets are easier to type than angle brackets.
2. It's a markup code for a single post, not a page layout language. So there are a lot less ways to screw things up.
3. Magic tags like [spoiler] [footnote] and [wiki].
4. HTML is a mess.

I did the blog number switch thing. I'm guessing the fact that it didn't show things like my side bar and banner and other little decorative touches that are near and dear to me is just a matter of the templates not matching up?
I am very interested in making the switch. How much work is it going to take to move Hold the Mayo over? I am more than willing to do the work I just need to get mentally prepared.

How does the switch happen exactly? If someone visits my blog, how does he see the Minx version instead of the MT version?

Right. Minx uses an entirely different template system to MT. That's the one drawback, but no way in hell am I going to make that part MT compatible.
I might be able to do a converstion program, though.
I am very interested in making the switch. How much work is it going to take to move Hold the Mayo over?
It's just a question of reworking templates. Minx templates tend to be a lot simpler than MT ones, so it shouldn't be too hard. You can (of course) keep your existing stylesheet and images.

It sounds like the best approach, at least for someone with my level of skills, is pick a template then tweak it until it looks like I want it to look. From every thing I've read about how quick Minx is the 3,000 rebuilds I'll have to do until I get it just right won't take very long!

Results Of A's J Customer Satisfaction Survey
In case anyone's interested about how the recent DOS attacks and spam attacks have affected one representative blog, I conducted an informal non-scientific survey over the weekend.
You can see the results
here.
This is not intended as a criticism, I was just curious about how blog visitors perceived the various
problems er challenges we've been hit with recently.

Thanks Annika.
The two main problems should be solved very soon, with a new server for the Jawa Report and a new comment system.
There's still a problem with some ISPs not being able to reach munu reliably. This is something that they are doing wrong, and I can't fix it (short of buying yet another server and transferring our public DNS there... which I may have to do.)
I had a talk with the guys at Insight Broadband, and they managed to fix the problem at their end, which is a relief, but there are still some ISPs that are screwed up.

My MuNu access is a lot better than it was a few months ago, but it's still hit and miss from time to time -- as in, at least once, daily. My ISP is Juno, btw. There must be something unique to MuNu that's causing the access probs because I've never had a problem reaching any other websites. It's strictly MuNu sites are occassionally unavailable.
Not that I know what I'm talking about, but could it possibly be that all the anti-spam/anti-DDOS measures have produced a somewhat "jury-rigged" database that, for some reason, has caused a **hiccup** in Juno-MuNu relations? Jus' thinkin' out loud here...

Nope. As far as I can tell, it's something Juno have screwed up.
The same problem was happening at Insight Broadband ever since we moved DNS servers, and it was an error on their part. Unfortunately, they never told me exactly what the error was.
Your best bet is to contact Juno and tell them that you seem to be having DNS problems with mu.nu sites.

A Lack of CPanel Cooperation
Eek! I'm trying to get into CPanel to use the file manager---a couple of shots to upload---and it seems a bit wonky. In detail:
1. It doesn't think I've set an e-mail address. OK, fine. Do that, and it still thinks I haven't set it.
2. Last login: Never? Nuh uh.
3. When I try to use the File Manager, it gives me this in a new browser window:
Unable to change directory to /kei/home/cpundit/.trash! You do not seem to have access permissions! (System Error: Permission denied)
All I can figure out is that something not-on-my-end isn't happy, and I can't figure out how to fix it, or the continuing problem I'm having with intra-Mu trackbacks to TexasBestGrok. Clicking on the TB link for JohnL's poll gives me this in the new window:
An error occurred: Fruitcake error: Unknown database 'mt_db'
The original tab changes to that as well.

Spammed!
I have been drowning in spam (not the only one, based on other posts here).
They all have this form:
IP Address: 193.188.77.2
Name:
Email Address: ykqkp51pac6h0@see.it
URL:
Comments:
<h1>allocating:salivate business grownup!disillusioned,contraption rail </h1>
Different IPs, gibberish email, and a random assortment of words that don't mean anything.
In fact, I can't understand the purpose of these comments at all. They don't seem to sell anything.
Anyhoo, I just got back from lunch, and well over 100 of these guys have attached themselves to old posts.
Any suggestsions? I'd like to know if there is a plug-in that can be added to MT that either automatically or manually (but easily) disables commenting on posts more than, say, two weeks old. That would certainly limit the spam dramatically.

Steve - yes there is a way to close old comments easily. It was an earlier post here that I don't have time to search for now... but this is the gist of it:
*************
Close comments for posts more than 21 days old.
MTCloseComments old="21"
Close comments for posts that are too old to appear on the main index.
MTCloseComments
Close comments for posts that are not on the front page and have been inactive for at least three days.
MTCloseComments inactive="3"
Close comments for posts at least 7 days old and inactive for three or more days.
MTCloseComments old="7" inactive="3"/center>
IMPORTANT! Remember to ad the 's to the tags
It gets placed right before "/MTEntryIfAllowComments" tag and seems to work well.
***************
That's a nearly direct copy from the post in question - I added the word "important" in caps because I just did this 2 days ago and forgot to add the 's which simply made the close comment show up ON my blog instead of closing comments - took me a couple of minutes to figure out what I did wrong.
When I do this I put it in the Main Index Template, rebuild Indexes Only and this closes all my old comments. Generally I go with a 7 day window and this is sufficient to keep the spammers at bay.
Unfortunately I have found that if I leave the tag in there - it will kill any trackbacks (when trackbacks are working and if anyone ever decides to trackback - not too often in my case *grin*)
So, I put it in, rebuild the index, take it out, save and rebuild again. I do it about once a month and this works very well. A month's time is when the spammers generally start in again. Good luck.

Blast There are supposed to be those greater and less than signs in there... on the preview they show up, but when I posted they disappeared... let me pull the relevant sentences and use brackets instead and see how that works...
IMPORTANT! Remember to ad the [ and ]'s to the tags.
and

There's a bug in MT 2.6 (or at least, a design problem) that means that spammers can still spam posts that are closed, but this does help.

By the way, the reason for those spam messages (we think) is that they are marking blogs that don't have spam filters. They'll come back later, see their mark, and know that they can unload their spam on you safely.

Makes sense. It's like vermin deciding where to nest. I still think one way to deal with this is to get together and offer a bounty on noses. We could also do it on ears, but only if both in a pair are submitted. Otherwise, well you know... blogger bounty hunters would just cheat.

Good News Everyone!
The Jawaserver has arrived (it's called Namo, in case anyone's interested), and I'm setting it up now.
It's kind of slow - it's a 1.7GHz P4 Celeron, and it runs at about half the speed of the 2.8GHz Pentium D's that power Kei and Yuri. And it's a single core, so Kei and Yuri (which are dual-core) are effectively four times as fast.
But it only has to host one blog, so it should be able to cope.

It was a pleasure! (In a kind of masochistic way...)
There were actually two problems, the first was that there were lots of incorrect div elements (i.e. <div> elements without corresponding </div> elements) in the template. After I cleaned that up it still didn't work! Then I realized that there was an unmatched div in one of the posts. When I took that out it worked.
The lesson: If you use markup in your post, make sure that it's correct!

Fruitcake Error
Yeah, I'm a bit of a fruitcake but I don't think it was an error. I think my position in life is to amuse people with my idiocy. Only I kind of want to wipe the egg off my face and David B. has kindly offered to clean up my site.

Strange. When we get the fruitcake error, it normally means that all of munu is dead, but it seems to be working. I can get into your blog in MT.
Was this happening just now, or a couple of hours ago? I did fix a fruitcake error earlier - the database cut MT off because... Okay, long story, but basically because of spam.

I'm not quite sure what's happened with your blog layout, though. It looks like a standard "bottombar" problem, but what you've done already should have fixed it.

Just now pixy...And when I mess up something, I'm good at it. Count on me to have the weirdo problems.
Chem class once I did something, got a weird result and even the teacher didn't know what I had done wrong.
I'm a genius at it.
Anyway, if you want, rather than have ten posts here, you can contact me at rachelann13@myway.com
Thanks for your help...
off to pretend to clean my livingroom.
