What MuNu is Made Of

Take a moment from the ups and downs of server migration and pay a visit to Michele at Letters From NYC.

Read about what she has done and what she is dealing with. Lend her your support.

We should all be proud and honored to have her as part of our little corner of the blogosphere.

Blog Email

I don't know if it was a specific problem that Pixy fixed and/or if it was a matter of simply moving to the new servers, but my blog e-mail is now working!!

W00t!!

Thanks Pixy!!

BTW Pixy.....what is your e-mail address? I should have it, but don't.

iso-8859-1

My blog has this meta:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

Generated by this:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=<$MTPublishCharset$>" />

In other words: MTPublishCharset is iso-8859-1 instead of utf-8.

Is this right?

MT Images

Hey, bandwidth hog here. I was uploading an image and it didn't 1) give me the option of creating just the html without creating a new post or - more importantly - 2) making a thumbnail of the image. Is MT screwed up or is this a new Moo Noo thing?

Blogroll pings

Since the switch to the new server, I noticed that on several blogs that have us listed (using Blogroll), there doesn't appear a "New" (or whatever word indicates we've updated our blog) anymore. We've long had a ping set up for Blogroll in our preferences; we even tried manually pinging our blog using Blogroll's manual ping form -- but it still wouldn't show that we updated our blog.

Any ideas?

Not Exactly News

Movable Type is acting strange and annoying. Not necessarily MT's fault though, given the weird setup we have.

Anyway, a bunch of blogs went blank. Rebuilding them was... iffy. I have no idea why that is; it was working; it should have worked.

I went and reset all the permissions on the MT2.6 blogs to something simpler, and rebuilt the ones that are listed below, and they all seem to be fine now. (Munuviana went blank somewhere along the way, so I rebuilt that too.)

If your blog has gone blank, either edit and save your most recent post, or go into Rebuild Site and choose Rebuild Indexes.

If that doesn't work, post here. I might need to upgrade my bug gun to a larger calibre.

Bug in my blog?

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/angrygwn/public_html/index.php on line 2722

What the...? Did I do something wrong? I just made two posts, very straightforward, and they did appear when I refreshed the site. Now this.

American Geek does not display?

I just rebuilt my site and it disappeared from view in the browser. I can still log in to the editing and utilities for it, but the blog does not appear to be visible. It just displays a blank page.

I did not add any code to any templates, either. I just rebuilt after deleting one of those funky "A"s (and adding a "-") from my inline comments template.

Whatever happened?

UPDATE: Well, the blog is back online. How did I manage that? By unpublishing one of my published posts. The blog came back immediately following that. I republished that post and the blog stayed online.

A mystery.

SactoDan Blog

Pixy,

Sacto Dan ask that I put up a help sign. When he logs into MT, he has Ellis Island and Munuviana but not his own blog. Can you take a look when you get a chance?

Thanks,

SR

One Squiggly Solution

Try putting

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
just after the <head> in your templates, and see if that fixes things.

The only problem is this might fix your old posts and then break your new posts. But give it a try.

Trickle

A couple days ago Jordana asked about Trickle. It hasn't been working on my blog since trackbacks stopped working. And I tested it today and it's still not working. Does it work for anyone else who's been using it, or is it just me?

Attack of the Squigglies

We had some sort of code-page glitch while transferring the blog database across, and people who use Word or similar fancy-pants editors to create posts got bit.

I can fix it, but what would help is a list of what used to be, and what now is.

So for example, apostrophes got replaced by ’ and ó got replaced by Ăł.

Post your examples in the comments and I'll write a program to hunt them down and kill fix them all.

Search error and characters errors

One thing I've noticed since the "switch" is that many letter characters have changed. For instance, apostrophes and characters with accents are now all buggy. Here's an example from an old archived post of ours :

Arthur Chrenkoff, whose "Good News from Iraq" was a fantastic alternative to what you usually would see in the mainstream media, is saying adiĂłs to the blogosphere.

Check the highlighted underlined word. There are many of these throughout the blog now.

Also, the search function now brings up "Error 500: Bugger." FYI.

Trackbacks Buggered

People trying to ping my posts with trackbacks from relevant posts of their own are getting "Error 500: Bugger". I assume this is at the server end and not my own...

More blog problems

I sure screwed something up. I'm stupid. When I try to post, I get this error.

Pixy, can you help?

If Loving You Is Wrong, Then I Don't Want To Be Right

All I want to say is, once again, thank you Pixy, from me and Merri.

Anyone else who wants to show their appreciation of teh d00d leave a comment.

Thank you so much for your hard work.

When you get rich off of Minx, make sure you jet in to meet us sometime, so I can buy you a Foster's. Yeah, I know, Foster's is really Australian for "Diarrhea we convinced Americans to drink" but it's the best we got here.

Kidding aside, we really do mean this. You are the best.

A Slight Strangeness

I don't know if this has happened to anyone else... and it's certainly not earthshakingly bad or in need of instant fix, but if you could figure out what's going on eventually and let me know Pixy, that would be cool.

Several places on my blog posts - like the brackets around my category and next to the "show comments" extension, have an A with a thing over it rather than the "greater than" "less than" signs. I did a rebuild of indexes, but that didn't change anything, so I assume the problem lies elsewhere. If I paid some attention to blog software, I'd probably be able to figure it out - but I don't, so I can't.

When you have a spare moment or two, give it a look.

Thanks much. BTW - smooth move as far as I'm concerned.

DONE!

I think everything's working - except for my blog, which has the hiccups.

If anything isn't working, post or comment here, or email me at andrew -at- pixymisa -dot- net, and I'll get it fixed.

The one problem you might have is with DNS, which should have updated by now, but can take a little while. But post/comment/email anyway, and I'll let you know if it's a real problem or if you just need to sleep in a couple more hours.

Oh yes: If you have a Wordpress blog and suddenly all your posts since June have disappeared, don't panic! It just means I've restored the wrong database. All the Wordpress blogs have their own databases, and following all the moving around we did during the DDoS attacks, we ended up with two copies of each. So depending on which server you started out on, and which server you ended up on, I might not have loaded the right database for you. But I do have copies of everything, so all it means is that I have to grab the other copy and load it up (which takes all of 30 seconds).
