Hey, bandwidth hog here. I was uploading an image and it didn't 1) give me the option of creating just the html without creating a new post or - more importantly - 2) making a thumbnail of the image. Is MT screwed up or is this a new Moo Noo thing?

Blogroll pings
Since the switch to the new server, I noticed that on several blogs that have us listed (using Blogroll), there doesn't appear a "New" (or whatever word indicates we've updated our blog) anymore. We've long had a ping set up for Blogroll in our preferences; we even tried manually pinging our blog using Blogroll's manual ping form -- but it still wouldn't show that we updated our blog.
Any ideas?

I just did some checking on the Activity Logs. It seems as if just about ALL pings sent out by mu.nu blogs are either "timing out" or failing to connect to the various "pingers" in some way. (I just put up another post a few minutes ago and Blogrolling didn't update again, even after an immediate manual ping via their ping page.)
Posted by: Hube @ at October 12, 2006 10:58 PM

I don't think this is anything new.
The problem seems to be that sites like Blogrolling will only accept one ping from the whole of munu every fifteen minutes.
It might also be that their servers suck and the pings really are timing out. I can increase the timeout limit, but then you have to waaaaait for it every time you post.

You've tried PINGOMATIC, right? This allows you to directly ping sites like blogroll.

Not Exactly News
Movable Type is acting strange and annoying. Not necessarily MT's fault though, given the weird setup we have.
Anyway, a bunch of blogs went blank. Rebuilding them was... iffy. I have no idea why that is; it was working; it should have worked.
I went and reset all the permissions on the MT2.6 blogs to something simpler, and rebuilt the ones that are listed below, and they all seem to be fine now. (Munuviana went blank somewhere along the way, so I rebuilt that too.)
If your blog has gone blank, either edit and save your most recent post, or go into Rebuild Site and choose Rebuild Indexes.
If that doesn't work, post here. I might need to upgrade my bug gun to a larger calibre.

American Geek does not display?
I just rebuilt my site and it disappeared from view in the browser. I can still log in to the editing and utilities for it, but the blog does not appear to be visible. It just displays a blank page.
I did not add any code to any templates, either. I just rebuilt after deleting one of those funky "A"s (and adding a "-") from my inline comments template.
Whatever happened?
UPDATE: Well, the blog is back online. How did I manage that? By unpublishing one of my published posts. The blog came back immediately following that. I republished that post and the blog stayed online.

Which templates should we add this to, specifically?
I tried to rebuild my site and got this error:

Attack of the Squigglies
We had some sort of code-page glitch while transferring the blog database across, and people who use Word or similar fancy-pants editors to create posts got bit.
I can fix it, but what would help is a list of what used to be, and what now is.
So for example, apostrophes got replaced by ’ and ó got replaced by Ăł.
Post your examples in the comments and I'll write a program to hunt them down and
kill fix them all.

Search error and characters errors
One thing I've noticed since the "switch" is that many letter characters have changed. For instance, apostrophes and characters with accents are now all buggy. Here's an example from an old archived post of ours :
Arthur Chrenkoff, whose "Good News from Iraq" was a fantastic alternative to what you usually would see in the mainstream media, is saying adiĂłs to the blogosphere.
Check the highlighted underlined word. There are many of these throughout the blog now.
Also, the search function now brings up

If Loving You Is Wrong, Then I Don't Want To Be Right
All I want to say is, once again, thank you Pixy, from me and Merri.
Anyone else who wants to show their appreciation of teh d00d leave a comment.
Thank you so much for your hard work.
When you get rich off of Minx, make sure you jet in to meet us sometime, so I can buy you a Foster's. Yeah, I know, Foster's is really Australian for "Diarrhea we convinced Americans to drink" but it's the best we got here.
Kidding aside, we really do mean this. You are the best.

Oooh! We have pie down here in S. Florida. I'll buy you a slice of Keylime. Or the entire pie. ;-)
Thank you for everything, Pixie!

A Slight Strangeness
I don't know if this has happened to anyone else... and it's certainly not earthshakingly bad or in need of instant fix, but if you could figure out what's going on eventually and let me know Pixy, that would be cool.
Several places on my blog posts - like the brackets around my category and next to the "show comments" extension, have an A with a thing over it rather than the "greater than" "less than" signs. I did a rebuild of indexes, but that didn't change anything, so I assume the problem lies elsewhere. If I paid some attention to blog software, I'd probably be able to figure it out - but I don't, so I can't.
When you have a spare moment or two, give it a look.
Thanks much. BTW - smooth move as far as I'm concerned.

My blog has the same problem. Even some apostrophes and such in some of my quoted material now seem to have weird three-character substitutions.
Posted by: USADave @ at October 09, 2006 07:05 PM

Forget the apostrophe remark on my previous comment. That was my bad, and I didn't realize it. However, my "Show Comments" link that, when clicked, lists the comments below the post, has an "A" with a little chevron on top of it. The funny thing is, is that is in the template like that, but I has never displayed like that until the server switch this past weekend. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what it used to be. Phin was the one who actually did the website design, so he probably knows what that is supposed to be. I'll check with him as soon as I can.

DONE!
I think everything's working - except for my blog, which has the hiccups.
If anything isn't working, post or comment here, or email me at andrew -at- pixymisa -dot- net, and I'll get it fixed.
The one problem you might have is with DNS, which should have updated by now, but can take a little while. But post/comment/email anyway, and I'll let you know if it's a real problem or if you just need to sleep in a couple more hours.

Oh yes: If you have a Wordpress blog and suddenly all your posts since June have disappeared, don't panic! It just means I've restored the wrong database. All the Wordpress blogs have their own databases, and following all the moving around we did during the DDoS attacks, we ended up with two copies of each. So depending on which server you started out on, and which server you ended up on, I might not have loaded the right database for you. But I do have copies of everything, so all it means is that I have to grab the other copy and load it up (which takes all of 30 seconds).

.. hey, Pixy... my search function isn't working... blacklist seems to be down... and my site is filled with lots of strange characters where my elipses should be.. huh?...

I'll check on the search. I had to turn it off a while back because it was eating all our memory, but I thought I'd replaced it with a new program.
Blacklist seems to be working for me - now. What problems are you having?
Now, as for your poor ellipses, they really did get messed up. I'll have to write a little program to run through and fix them all for you. You could use hellip; instead: … That's more resistant to messer-upperers.

My DNS maybe one of the ones not working quite right. Treygivens.mu.nu seems to be going to americanwarmonger.mu.nu.
Can I please go back to sleep?

By the way, Eric, do you write your posts in Word and then paste them in? Just wondering how that happened. It should still work, but obviously it didn't.

Okay, Trey, you're back on the air! It somehow lost the alias that mapped your account to your other account...
American Warmonger comes up by default because it's the first username in alphabetical order, and if the server can't find the right site, it just shows the first one. I've switched things around so that it comes up with the main munu page instead, which is a bit less confusing.

Hmm. Eric, looks like you're not the only one that has messed-up symbols. Can you help me match up what's showing now with what it should be?
Then I can run a little program that can fix it for everyone.

I'm off to bed now - it's been a long day - but I will be back to fix everything in the morning.

Everything seems fine. Just curious, how does this move affect comments, if at all. I get complaints that the comment function seems broken quite often.

... hey, Pixy... sorry for the delay in getting back to you...
... but to answer your question, normally I compose a post in Outlook (which, I suppose is using a form of MS Word)...
... hope that helps...

Hi Pixy!
Well, my sight has disappeared I think. The main page comes up with a database error, and a subdomain I have, wspr.nickqueen.com, goes to the mu.nu page. Weirdness!

Oops. That's no good. I'll get it fixed for you.

Pixy- I put that I had a case of the squigglies in the above post and just looked here. I do write mine in word first before I post. I notice Eric said he writes his in Outlook. I don't know about Teresa. That could be the common denominator. But I still have a squiggly problem in the section that allows readers to look at comments without posting one. That would be a template issue.

Nick - your blogs should be back up now. Let me know if I've got the right ones this time.

Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at October 09, 2006 01:42 AM

Steve - the problem with comments is that when we get flooded with spam, the comments get switched off to prevent the server collapsing. They get switched on again after a minute, but if we're still getting spam-flooded, they could get switched off again right away.
I haven't enabled this yet on the new servers, so we'll see how we go. One alternative is to use the new comment system (as seen on Ace of Spades and the Jawa Report), but that doesn't update the comment count on your main page yet.
