Waterlogged
Now that the blamegasm over Katrina seems to be over, it's time to move on, blog-wise. To be sure, there will still be finger pointing and stupid quotes (or more correctly, quotes from stupid people), but the relief effort is in high gear now. I'd like to mention a last few items and then I'm probably done with it.
Susie's family is safe! Yay!!!
Bitterman lived on the gulf coast for a while, and found an
arial photo of what's left of his old neighborhood. Here's
something I hadn't heard before:
Initially when the storm surge came in, he had thought all was well, but the wind packed it up so tightly, it began entering the storm sewer pipe outlets at beach level and flowing uphill to his neighborhood some 35 or so feet above the beach.
Yikes! Fortunately, everyone is safe.
Victor has a list of
undeliverable postal zip codes. Check with your local post office, because the list will be shrinking as the relief continues.
Finally, everyone should be shocked at how quickly law and order broke down in New Orleans (I haven't heard about problems anywhere else... but the media has been hyper-focused on NO, so who knows), and I'm reminded that the primary and ultimate responsibility for you and your family's safety is you. Please go back and read the "
For Ourselves, By Ourselves" series over at Random Nuclear Strikes. It's not a one-size-fits-all, but he discusses points that you might never think of. He also links to an excellent article titled "
Disaster Guns". Personally, I've brought up the subject of household arms again, and specifically told the girls that they will be learning to use a handgun as a minimum. Even Mookie, who was the most opposed when I last brought it up, realizes now that there's some wisdom in that.

A huge part of the problem in New Orleans is that the police force simply melted away. According to what I have read they have less than 1/3 of their normal capability. The Chief of the National Guard has termed them as "significantly degraded", which in military terms means they are no longer a factor to consider in the situation!
Read this post for more info on that.
The bottom line? Tell Mookie that in a disaster situation like NO, her only defense, for a while, is going to be her abilities and native wit.

One should never make a point of relying upon cops for anything and a Remington 870 makes a pretty good line of defense.

This makes no sense to me at all. The first appearance of the Mouse was in the Disney short Steamboat Willie, which was released on 18 November 1928. This would seem to make him a Scorpio.

United We Stand (except for you, you don't think like me)
From Hold the Mayo (who turned two this week, yay!), who first saw the link to this at Zoe Brain's place:
So why was I thinking of starting a movement against giving aid to the stricken areas?
Because these are red states. They voted for Bush. These ninnies obviously wanted these policies, and they deserve to live with the consequences of their votes.
A large part of me still believes that many of these W-worshipping numbskulls deserve to suffer and to die. They brought it on themselves. Let them look to Jayzuss for aid: It's time they stopped leeching off the more productive blue staters.
(Californians stupidly give much more to the federal government than we receive from it; the money flows in a very different direction in the red states.)
So, at least, I started to write. But then (to paraphrase the old song) I thought I'd better think it out again.
Many of the victims, the ones who have suffered the most, are poor. The hardest hit were the blue state folk living among the red state maniacs. New Orleans, we should note, went heavily for Kerry.
And that's why we must help. Although it was very tempting to say otherwise.
I want to make this clear. Zoe Brain found this and linked to it, she didn't write it herself. If you want the link to where it was spotted, click on through up above.

You know,I was gonna go totally ballistic about this asshole but I've decided not to.The reason is that I've done it so many times with shitheads like this that I've come to realize that the old saying;"You dress them up and send them to school and they still don't learn a damb thing" is still more true than ever.
However, what I'm gonna do is ask a couple of simple questions.
First; Is there any doubt at all as to why a fellow like me with no political affiliation whatsoever still despises the hell out of a fuckin' liberal?
Is there any confusion as to why these people are dangerous to everyone and everything. That goes double when they skip their medication.
The next ones are for the braindead asswipe that wrote this piece of bile tripe. If I took all of the rich people's money and gave it to all of the poor people would you wanna kill the newly rich?Which fuckin' ones would be your enemies then and why?
Being as how most lib needle dicks like you are really just anti-human appologetics hiding behind a mask of self righteousness and self appointed superiority can you please tell me just how hard I would have to beg you to just go right ahead and take a flyin' fuckin' leap off off a very very tall building?I will be eagerly awaiting an answer to this one.

R.J. - thanks for the clarification, that was most thoughtful of you.
Russ - although I wouldn't put it in such unladlylike terms.... yes, I agree. Though there are actually worse nematodes than this specimen. Like the people saying that Mossad agents deliberately steered grain barges into the levees in order to kill blacks.
That such people (I use the term loosely) can exist is incredible.

It's the only explanation, really
A woman has sued King county in Washington state.
In a lawsuit filed 10 days ago in Pierce County Superior Court, Robinette Amaker of North Carolina claimed that the brain of her deceased brother, Bradley Gierlich, was taken from his body in 1998 at the King County Medical Examiner's office.
The only reason I can see this becoming an issue now after seven years is that maybe he's up for reelection.

It appears that Disney was already using similar technology this past summer.
We feed some dolphins and observed photographers in strategic locations taking photos. As soon as your picture was taken someone behind you would hand you a piece of paper with information on how to view your pictures immediately at some photo stations directly behind the feeding area.

The one friend I managed to hear from, only because he was visiting a brother in Houston, sent me some camera phone pics of Pascagoula. I managed to run across a photo package from the local paper in Biloxi of my old neighborhood in Gulfport a the corner of Hwy 90 and Lorrain Cowan Rd. It has effectively ceased to exist and there is no word on the fate of my former neighbors, most of which are retired folks and I have stayed in touch with over the years.
I fear the worst for alot of them. It's a truly heartbreaking situation.
Thanks for the concern Ted.

Looking at those pictures--especially the blue/purple structure in the lower right-hand corner...look to the left of that structure. In the before picture, there's a large building and a parking lot. In the after picture, there's the large building and a large something in the parking lot, at a funny angle.
I think it's a barge.
Jeeze Louise.
Posted by: Victor at September 01, 2005 02:18 PM (L3qPK)
3
I believe the structure in the lot is a casino barge and the blue structure is possibly the Aquarium?I blew it up with the maginifier and it appears to have three other objects inside of it like the tanks in all of the media footage.Could just be a marina or something though.
On the weather channel the afternoon before Katrina hit Jim Cantore was talking to the owner of a casino barge the size of an aircraft carrier who was trying to get the last of his close up done. The next day the barge was sitting on top of a Howard Johnson's.You couldn't even see the HoJo because it was flattened under the barge.
One other story that freaked me out was that during the height of the storm they had to send out three tugs into downtown Birmingham to retrieve an oil tanker that was bouncing off of the skyscrapers like a pinball.
Then again there's the pics of the big bridge down there that was closed because it had an offshore oil rig jammed up under it.There where 11 oil rigs missing from the gulf last I heard.

Victor - yeah, there's a barge or boat moored in the first picture that looks like what ended up in the parking lot. And looking at the cars in the first picture, it ain't exactly small.
Yikes.

I should've mentioned that those photos were taken more than a year apart, according to the NOAA. That'll account for some detail differences.
That probabaly is a barge tossed ashore, it's probably not the same one in both photos.
Posted by: Ted at September 01, 2005 08:48 PM (+OVgL)
8
A little bit of net searching tells me that the casino in the before photo is most likely the Copa Gulfport and the blue thing is the Marine Life Oceanarium. The dolphins are now living in a hotel swimming pool.Serious!
The little roundy round "circus" road near the bottom and a bit to the left is the junction of Jones Park Dr.,23rd Ave and Gulfport Harbor St.
Posted by: Russ at September 01, 2005 11:40 PM (ObxzR)
9
The Copa Casino is in the before picture. It is the ship in the lower right moored at the state port. It used to be called the Pride of Mississippi and had to sail for people to gamble before dockside gaming passed. It was always breaking down. So they used it stationary for a few years before towing it off and replacing it with the barge that is shown about 200 yds south on dry land. The blue/purple structure is the Grand Casion complex. Half of it is now sitting across Hwy 90.
The other thing that is pretty gnarly is that the Mississippi State Port deals alot in frozen poultry and bananas. Dole banana has a big container yard there. If you eat Dole bananas, chances are they come through Gulfport. The frozen chicken goes all over the place but mostly to Russia and China. The poultry freezers are all on the west side of the port. You may have seen some of the pictures where it appears to have flooded crates or waxed freezer boxes with Dole container trailers scattered about? Yep, 15 or 20 tons of frozen chicken thawing in the September heat. They say the stench is something to behold.

Kudos on your efforts to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help:
I have opened forums at www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.

I believe that you'll be able to get a very good deal on a used SUV over the next few months.
It reminds me of one springtime a few years ago. The winter had been terrible (1999?), and everyone ran out and bought 4-wheel drive vehicles. The car lots were full of used sports cars, and the dealers couldn't even give 'em away.
