How are your cats adjusting to Standard Time?

* * *

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Courtesy Hrothgar:

Amazing. Some people need to be careful around those pups, I think.

Extreme, but steps taking here may be applicable when other animals get their heads stuck.

I should have sent these orange and black cats last week ...

My two boy cats -- Rufus is my golden boy, a dog in a cat body, very sweet and protective, bossy and vocal. Julius is the black blob with lantern eyes, a terrific hunter, yet very cuddly, and my baby. They are five and four years old, respectively.

The tortie is Susannah, who is 14 and usually grouchy, but occasionally sweetens up. I sing "My Girl" to her and "Oh Susannah," and she knows they are about her.

I am skywch, and I usually lurk. Thanks!

Thanks for sending in the great photos of your wonderful, distinctive cats! Susannah can give a Halloween look, can't she?

2 Mr Trouble got a trip to the vet this morning. Noticed one leg seemed a little swollen and he was limping. Decided to take him in. The vet doesn't think it's broken. Troubles got the good drug and is resting inside.

Thanks for the tip this morning.

Ralphy can be carried. Only 40 pounds.
It's the constant caregiving and making sure he doesn't hurt himsel that's wearing.

12 Afternoon, Pet Peoples!

"Fur missiles" indeed!

Skywch, Rufus is easy to pick out as your "golden boy." But I'm confused as to which cat in the second pic is Julius, the "black blob with lantern eyes" -- is he the one whose eyes we see? And then Susannah is the one curled next to him whose head is hard to make out?

13 My springr weighs 85 pounds. Luckily, there are just a couple of steps in the house. He has a step I use for him to get in and out of the car. Sometimes he needs help getting up on the couch. But he won't be around forever, so I do what I can. He can still chase bunnies out in the garden.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at November 07, 2026 03:51 PM (JNr/z)

14 My furry thugs have adjusted to standard time: The only way it affected them last Sunday was my shifting of their dinner and breakfast times. What used to be 6 am was now 5 am, so I held their breakfast off until 5:30 on Sunday. Dinner I gave them at 5:45 pm, and then breakfast as usual at 6 am Monday.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 07, 2026 03:52 PM (56Qyq)

15 Freddy the Freeloader, the gray tabby with white semi-feral, and Alfred the Gray, the shorthair of that color, are still showing up for chow outdoors: Freddy 2x a day, Alfred for every second or third handout. I suspect he already has a home and they let him roam around. I suppose (he said, heaving a sigh) I'll spring for another $5 bag of the Friskies dry food for them when I hit the store on Monday. It's the Indoor Killer Kittenz who get the expensive IAMS stuff.

20 Ralphy has severe separation anxiety and needs to be around me all the time. So that means the constant carrying and it's a 2 level split. Five stairs to bedrooms, 8 to the computer room and 3 more for the basement.

We have a routine but still.
Like all caregiving it can be a drain.

22 My visitor, Alfred the Gray, looks much like the gray cat ("blue," the fanciers call it) in the top pic.

OH, and we stopped by a thrift store/cat adoption center out in the western suburbs this am. Lots of antique materials, plates and cups and books and Xmas things, and even a few pieces of furniture. One corner of the shop is devoted to a large screened "porch" with cat trees and toys, and a number of adult cats for adoption. There's even a book you can look through to see the background and details on each one. They had at least one pure black, a couple of gingers, and a domestic longhair ("She's a diva," the lady told us with a smile) who looked much like my Dagny La Siberienne.

23 My kittehs are good about not having a precise eating schedule. They eat when I wake up and again in the evening when I remember. What they insist on though is going outside about 7:00 am (now 8:00am). I should have never started it. If I don't get up the sister kitteh has learned to open my bedroom plantation shutters and then yells at me. They both want to eat the grass before they start their day.

Posted by: polynikes at November 07, 2026 04:09 PM (OXhw3)

24 Every time I walk to the kitchen, the older cat follows me and goes for the food dish...
The two remaining cats don't really like human food, so leaving my food out is relatively safe...compared to the dead horny black cat, which would steal food off your plate if you were distracted by even a half second.

30 Zach looks **ALERT**!

I just finished reading Birdie Horne's charming and funny mystery novel Don't Cross Mo Ellery, in which having to take care of three show-quality adult poodles is just one of the title character's escalating problems. The dogs, she is told, have French names that mean something like "He Who Eats the Brioche," "Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood," and a third Frenchified title I can't recall. Fortunately for Mo and the reader, they go by Jean, Jacques, and again I can't recall the third, but it was a French name. Thus I guess Mo's poodles probably looked like Zach here.

"Oy with the poodles already!"

37 Piper found a squirrel in the wood pile on the front porch. Chased the hell out of it and actually dispatched it, and then tried to bring it inside to show off. She is awfully fast when she needs to be, even though she's packed on a couple of pounds over the summer.

Also, it is the season of sled dog training, so when we drive in we usually see at least one and often three or four four-wheelers being pulled by full dog teams. The kennels around here are Iditarod dogs, and they need to train about twice daily to get into shape, and until there is reliable snow on the ground, they use the four-wheelers. Lovely dogs, really, and so happy to be out running.

We live near Reddington Kennels, which is the original home of the originator of the Iditarod race. Now it's run by his grandkids. Pretty cool legacy.

There's also a couple of 100 and 200 mile races that take off from our local lake in December and January. Plus the Jr. Iditarod for the kids.

Most of my cats have shown little interest in my food, even when sitting on the dinette table with us. (I know I shouldn't allow it, but hey, whatchagonnado?) Though the late black cat Wolf would sniff at my fish or meat if I got up and left the dish unattended.

Stirling knows when I am preparing frozen fish. He would show up on the kitchen counter even *before* I cut the plastic bag open -- there was no way he could smell it! Finally I figured it out. He was keying on my taking the aluminum foil from the cabinet and scrolling a length out before opening the fish. It's the only time I use the foil, really, so he saw the connection.

I cut open the bag and drain the meltwater into a bowl in the sink, and he laps at that while I prepare the fish out of his reach.
