7 Congratulations on finding a new gluten free item, Pixy. I hadn't heard the term "nuggies" before or it's been so long, or I'm so tired, I could not recall that word meant "nuggets". I guess dinosaur nuggets are made out of chicken and shaped like dinosaurs, because actual dinosaur nuggets ( even without gluten ) doesn't sound very tasty. 😉

11 Speaking of Nvidia's Spark here's a review of an Asus 14" laptop with one. (Notebook Check)

Seems like general-purpose performance is actually pretty good. Damn expensive though.

$3700 and you can only get it with up to 32GB of RAM?
To get the amount of RAM you need to run decent AI models you'd need at least 96GB and preferably the full fat 128GB.

Very few people would want to pay $7000+ for a 14" laptop to get the 128GB.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 05, 2026 04:32 AM (6ydKt)

12 It's available in Australia in the 64GB configuration. That's about $5000 though.

I would have liked to upgrade to an AM5 motherboard and get a 10000 series (Who knows what AMD will do with that number scheme) Ryzen CPU and 32 GB or 64 GB of DDR5 RAM.

THe way things are now, I'll probably have to wait until AM and an 11 or 12000 series CPU with DDR6 RAM.

Maybe by then it won't cost me $800 or $900 for RAM and an SSD.

31 One of the primary drivers for PC upgrades is gaming. Gaming has been fairly crap lately, with most of the best things coming out being indie-ish titles that don't need the latest and greatest hardware. So there's a bit of a demand factor involved here as well, probably. Make something hard to get or expensive to get, and then make the desire to have that thing in the first place start to evaporate....

It will have to be through private sales as they are banned from import into the U.S., for many reasons but mainly because they are mobile CCP spy machines.

So there won't be any dealerships and good luck on getting parts and service unless you want to drive to Toronto.

The biggest game in a decade is coming out this month, Grand Theft Auto VI.

It will only be available on Playstation 5 for awhile, but they are supposedly trying to speed up the release of the PC port.

That will be the biggest driver of PC gamer upgrades when it does come out, I'm guessing by the second or third quarter of next year.

How many gamers can afford to upgrade to a better GPU next year is still an open question, but if the current prices are maintained until then, or get worse, there won't be many upgrades past a RTX 5060 Ti or RX 9060/70 XT.

39 @27/SpeakingOf: I'm in a similar situation. I was getting ready to start speccing out a complete machine refresh to replace the one I built in 2013 (which I'm still going strong on.)

It takes me days to research the parts in order to focus on manufacturers' track records of reliability, then I have to find all the manuals for the parts to make sure the parts are truly compatible (I actually read the motherboard manufacturer's sheets on which memory they've certified with their motherboards, for instance.)

Anyway, After 2 or 3 days of pouring through information, if I'm lucky I have a list of products that are:
a) Reliable (or should be)
b) Compatible
c) Available
d) Affordable

And then comes the purchase, the assembly, the intense testing, the install of the OS, and the part I dread: Migration and setup.

And that last part is why I always drag my heels on getting into this whole upgrade mess because I hate, hate, HATE migration and setup.

Window 8, 10, and 11 also being dog vomit may have had something to do with my delays.

Aaaaanyway... Would like to upgrade, but... not with things as they are now. Nope. Not happening. "Affordable" is BROKEN.

42 Trump won’t be here forever and the GND is not dead. I expect the new US Canada trade deal will eliminate any issues regarding Chinese EV’s.

Posted by: Accomack at November 05, 2026 05:26 AM (9H7EW)

43 Chinese EVs are so cheap they are killing domestic manufacturers wherever they are imported - Europe, Brazil, and now Canada.

If a country wants a domestic industry the last thing you want is Chinese cars allowed in.

The only thing that would save American automakers is that they make mostly trucks and SUVs.
The Chinese make EV SUVs but they have no answer for light and heavy duty trucks.

47 Evening and morning to all in this new America! Thor's Day yet again, but strangely different here: less hot and less wet, with (supposedly) cooler temps in store for the weekend. I plan to get in a solid workout this a.m., and maybe go out for coffee and a sandwich as my breakfast. Not sure yet.

Fen, you probably know this, but the anesthetic techniques have improved vastly in recent years. When we had my boyhood cat Rusty snipped in '72, he had to stay overnight and came home the next day still groggy. In '83, Arizona had to stay overnight but came home fine and hungry. Since then a cat can go home the same day and be back on his regular routine very quickly. Ask your vet. Your kitten may be wolfing his dinner at the usual time.
