Trump Will End the $3.8 Billion Per Year of Military Aid to Israel by Year's End;
Counterintuitively, Is This the Best Outcome for the US and Israel?

The US will stop the payment of military aid to Israel. It will, however, continue authorizing the sale of key US weapons systems to its ally.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that the U.S. would stop sending military aid to Israel by the end of the year.

Trump told "Fox & Friends" that Israel is in a position to purchase its own weapons and doesn't need the U.S. to fund them.

The U.S. provides $4 billion per year in military aid, Trump said, and he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had discussed terminating the funding for years. He said that the idea originated with Netanyahu.

"They don't need it. Israel is a very thriving country," Trump said.

It's actually $3.8 billion per year.

Why would Netanyahu favor an end to US military aid to Israel?

It makes no sense.

Or does it?

Although this may seem to be a sop to the J.D. Vance/Tucker Carlson Groyper pseudoconservatives -- and I imagine it is at least partly that -- it might not be such a bad deal for Israel at all.

Pro-Israel, right-leaning Jews have argued that the US should end aid to Israel -- because the aid is used by antisemites like Tucker Carlson to bash Jews, and because the money comes with very thick strings.

Presidents like Obama and Biden have used the threat of withdrawing the aid to demand that Israel not strike back against the Democrat Party's terrorist allies.

Jacob Siegel and Liel Leibovitz for Tablet, itself a Jewish commentary magazine:

End U.S. Aid to Israel

America's manipulation of the Jewish state is endangering Israel and American Jews

July 16, 2023

Two years ago, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously wept in Congress after changing her vote on funding Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system from "no" to "present." The New York Times said that the incident showed progressive members of "the Squad" "caught between their principles and the still powerful pro-Israel voices in their party, such as influential lobbyists and rabbis." (The line was later removed with no correction.) In People magazine, the congresswoman's procedural maneuver to avoid voting was appreciated for its pathos: "Ocasio-Cortez Opens Up About Israel Iron Dome Vote That Left Her in Tears: 'Yes, I Wept.'" In the end, the resolution passed the House 420-9.

The Iron Dome is, of course, an entirely defensive anti-missile system which the Totally Not Antisemitic or Pro-Hamas Democrats hate because it stops 90% of Hamas and Hezbollah and Iranian missiles from hitting the Jewish population centers they're aimed at.

The Skwad and other terrorist-promoting antisemites want those missiles to kill Jews so that Hezballah and Hamas and Iran will be able to extract ransoms from Jews.

Ocasio-Cortez's bit of Kabuki theater fit neatly into the premade mythology of a domineering Israel lobby, popularized by academic John Mearsheimer, whose views are experiencing a burst of popularity in isolationist corners of the right. His central claim--that America has been pressured by an all-powerful, determined ethnoreligious lobby into acting against its own interests--is made explicit in references to "influential lobbyists and rabbis," in Rep. Ilhan Omar's tweets that U.S. support for Israel is "all about the Benjamins," and in graphics like The New York Times' infamous "Jew-tracker" that policed support for Barack Obama's Iran deal according to the religion of members of Congress.

Belief in the mythic power of "the lobby" rests on a common article of faith that is shared by Israel's loudest critics and most fervent supporters--namely, that U.S. military aid forms the cornerstone of the "special relationship" between the two nations, and that this aid is a gift that powerfully benefits Israel. Cutting off Israel's D.C. cash pipeline, it's assumed, would dramatically alter the balance of power in the Middle East: in one scenario by endangering Israel's security, and in another by forcing its recalcitrant leaders to accept the enlightened proposals of Western policymakers.

While this fantasy version of the U.S.-Israeli relationship is useful for stirring up emotions and demonstrating partisan loyalties, it does more to flatter the self-importance of Israel-aid opponents and supporters alike than it does to describe an increasingly warped reality, in which Israel ends up sacrificing far more value in return for the nearly $4 billion it annually receives from Washington. That's because nearly all military aid to Israel--other than loan guarantees, which cost Washington nothing, the U.S. gives Israel no other kind of aid--consists of credits that go directly from the Pentagon to U.S. weapons manufacturers.

In return, American payouts undermine Israel's domestic defense industry, weaken its economy, and compromise the country's autonomy--giving Washington veto power over everything from Israeli weapons sales to diplomatic and military strategy. When Washington meddles directly in Israel's domestic affairs, as it does often these days, Israeli leaders who have lobbied for these payments--including current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu--are simply reaping the rewards of their own penny-wise, pound-foolish efforts.

...

It's no wonder that one well-known regional expert we consulted, who served in high security-related positions in the U.S. government, was horrified when we proposed ending American aid to Israel. When we asked which of our arguments were overstated or mistaken, this person answered: "None of them. But my job is to represent the American interest. Aid to Israel is the biggest bargain we have on our books. Ending it would be a disaster for us. I just don't see who it benefits."

...

Ending aid would not mean the end of the U.S.-Israeli military alliance, intelligence sharing, trade, or any mutual affinity between the countries. Rather, it would allow both sides to see what each is getting in return for what. In the words of retired IDF Major General Gershon Hacohen: "Once we are not economically dependent on them, the partnership can flourish on its own merits."

...

Formal U.S. military aid to Israel, as opposed to loans and cash-on-delivery arms sales, started in 1979, when the Carter administration offered it as a carrot to get Israel to agree to withdraw from all of Sinai as part of a peace deal with Egypt. The same deal provided a comparable sum of U.S. military aid and arms to Egypt, for many years the second-largest recipient of U.S. foreign military financing after Israel. Notably, the aid to Egypt was given despite the country's displaying no capacity to deploy military force outside its own borders--the goal being to achieve a rough form of U.S.-brokered parity between the two recent foes.

Tucker Carlson never objects to paying off Egypt. I suppose he might, because the money is intended as a bribe to avoid hostilities against Isreal, and he would like every Muslim country to attack Israel.

But he and the other antisemites JD Vance insists on courting never bring up Egypt or all the other countries on the American dole, because they want to make the claim that the US is dominated by "ZOG," the Zionist Occupational Government, and bringing up the fact that the US sprays money around like P. Diddy at a Baby Oil Freak-Off would damage their bison-skulled propaganda efforts.

The writers note that Obama's promise of aid to Israel, $3.8 billion per year for ten years, was only made so that he had the power to restrain Israel from attacking his close ally, Iran:

..

In reality, the MOU advanced Obama's goal of paying lip service to Israeli fears while constraining future Israeli actions, in line with a new American strategic architecture in which the interests of traditional allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia would be "balanced" with those of their mortal enemy, Iran. It deepened Israel's reliance on U.S. arms and military spending, while extending Washington's reach into Israel's domestic affairs. Paradoxically, the "most generous" package ever was an instrument to downgrade the U.S. commitment to Israel. The MOU purchased both influence over Israel and the acquiescence of American Jews who were expected, in the face of such public generosity, to go along with the White House policy of strengthening Iran, while upholding the narrative that Obama was Israel's "best friend."

...

Last week, President Biden authorized the military to deploy up to 3,000 reservists to Europe in support of Ukraine's war effort. There are, at present, an undisclosed number of American troops operating in Ukraine alongside the other 80-some countries where the U.S. has forces stationed. By contrast, no American soldier or pilot has ever risked their lives for Israel, and no American missile or aircraft has ever flown in Israel's defense. Such are the myths and realities of "the lobby."

Another point the authors make is that by requiring Israel to buy American missiles and weapons with the aid, it necessarily -- and possibly intentionally -- starves Israel's own vital domestic industry from cash.

And that means that someone like Obama and Biden can blackmail Israel with the threat to withhold providing the American anti-missile missiles that keeps Israel cities from being destroyed.

In addition, US supplies of the Patriot missile are currently small, partly because we're sending so many to Ukraine and also shooting off a lot of them to protect our own bases from Iranian attacks. Other countries like Israel simply can't afford to be dependent on US anti-missile defenses, because the US, of course, may reprioritize delivery of the missiles to other countries (like Ukraine) or just need to use so many of them ourselves that we have few to send to overseas clients.

...

Cut the stranglehold of aid. Let America pursue its interests. Let Israel, too, follow its own interests, which sometimes align with those of Washington and sometimes don't. If Israelis think it will ensure their security to decapitate the Iranian regime, or give the Golan Heights on a platter to Bashar Assad, or develop their own homemade fighter plane and sell it to India or Saudi Arabia, let them go ahead. And let American Jews who care about being Jewish focus on observance and learning their people's history, instead of pimping for Lockheed Martin. If the commitment to Israel is deeper than mere political fashion, if it is more than a secularized idolatry, then it's time to prove it--by smashing the ideological idols of America's Israel debate.

Will this appease the rapid Nazi and cryptoislamist Tuq'r Qarlson? No, of course not; he and his allies on the Skwad will shift their attacks from aid to Israel to weapons sales to Israel paid for with Israel's money, period.

It will certainly be clarifying. And that is itself a good thing.

5 Israel had been aiming to head in this direction for a while. The money isn't worth the negative press.

In general this is the beginning of Trump's global framework for foreign policy, each region a coalition of largely self-sustaining countries, in this case an Israeli-Arab bloc for the Middle East.

6 Remember, this was never aid. This was favorable loans that they had to use to buy US military equipment.

But, if it's over, then, well, I guess we stopped funding genocide and El-Sayed has all of his goals accomplished and he can just retire from politics.

34 This transition has been a topic for a long time, long before Trump, and for many of the reasons cited. But today, vs. the prior period, Israel is in an excellent position to do without the aid. And given the shifts in American politics - i.e. the even further dumbing down of the populace and now the emergence of dangerously stupid elements - Israeli self-reliance is obviously prudent.

Self-reliance for lower-tech items (ordnance, ammo, small arms) was pursued strongly by Israel up until (?) 10-15 years ago. Resuming much of this production has been an Israeli priority since 10/7.

And I think $500M of the "aid" package is for joint development projects (from which the US obviously benefits, and bigly) - don't think that will be ended.

38 As long as we keep some kind of military relationship with Israelz we're still good. Israel is an ally in a very unstable and important region...their military and especially intelligence is vitally important to our goals and operations there.

Additionally, their use of US equipment is an excellent proving/testing ground for our most advanced equipment. We're very concerned about potential war with China, a near-peer competitor....something we haven't had to deal with in generations. We don't want to be caught like the beginning of most of our previous wars, working the bugs out of our equipment and developing best practices. We want the Israelis (and others, like Ukraine) to figure that shit out for us.

41 I hardly ever listen to rockstars and actors for any political advice.

However, I have followed Bob Geldof for many years since he was inside the workings of international food aid to Africa for decades.

Based on that expertise, he now believes that "free" food is a net harm and is clearly the most effective way to suppress or drive out local food production.

I am not an expert on the defense industry, but I suspect the same economic principles may also apply to Israel's defense contractors.

So Israel may in fact be bettor off without massive amounts of U.S. foreign aid. At least during non-crisis times.

Aid to Israel is a huge talking point for anti-semitic Leftists, and perhaps some Independents. Would have been nice if Trump had made that announcement a bit earlier than election day.

However, I have followed Bob Geldof for many years since he was inside the workings of international food aid to Africa for decades.

Based on that expertise, he now believes that "free" food is a net harm and is clearly the most effective way to suppress or drive out local food production.

58 The question of the Egyptian aid - packaged together with the Israeli aid since the outset - is interesting. The world has changed and the Egyptian-Israeli "peace" is now guaranteed by Israeli power, Egypt's attitudes sort of irrelevant. Egypt is a hopeless economic basket case, and would really feel the impact of their aid package disappearing (they're already under greater stress than usual due to vastly reduced Suez Canal revenues).

Back when it all started, there were two linkages deliberately designed in to provide political support to it all. The Egypt and Israel aid packages were linked, of course. And the whole thing was housed at State, instead of DOD, which would have been a logical place for it given that it was mostly military. This was to help protect the political basis for foreign aid, always the red-headed step-child of appropriations politics.

Egypt aid will now be sort of orphaned. Interesting.

67 Have to get ready for vote and then work, but I always wonder about Iron Dome (and anti-missile systems in general.) On the one hand, they are an unalloyed good: they keep terrorists and rogue states from waging war against populations of civilians and infrastructure.

On the other hand, it is also a perverse incentive for shitheads. This allows them to say that Israel is in no real danger and should not be fighting back as aggressively as they are. It's no big deal. The reason it is no big deal is because tech on the defensive side is making it so that the terrorists are not killing as many people as they wish to.

On the other, other hand- these shitheads are always the same- on the other side. When a big loss of life and war crimes DO happen (see Oct 7) they pass it off as no more than them doing what they are doing in response to Israel's 'aggression.'

So, fuck them all. Kill the fuckers.

68 $3-4 billion was a pittance, and every other day you can read how this or that Israel startup was bough by Apple or Intel or some other conglomerate for billions. Just the other day Intel bought Israel's quantum startup Classiq technologies for $2.2B. A week before, Proofpoint bought Israel's Varonis for for $6.3 billion. Every week! So 3.8 billion is nothing. Time to reach equitable agreements and relationship.

Here's what happened: The salesmen had a really good month. No one involved has incentive to pay a good price. The salespeople jack up the price at least to high retail and make fat commissions.

It should be obvious to the world by now that there is an insidious and well funded campaign to increase support for islam throughout the world. As always, this means a counter campaign to vilify Israel. It's what they've been doing in the middle east for years and now they've taken the campaign worldwide.

We need to push back hard on islam and sharia and all things related to islam. If we do that then the campaign against Israel will be much less effective.

Well, mostly. 3.3B out of 3.8B is financing, the other half billion is direct aid.

As to what I said about Camp David, grok says:

In short, the large-scale US aid packages to both countries are a direct outgrowth of the Camp David peace process and remain in place as of late 2026 (with a possible near-term shift for Israel under discussion). They are sustained by successive US administrations and Congress as a matter of policy rather than treaty requirement.

So we wouldn't be "breaking" Camp David Accords. Just breaking the tradition.

I also think that Netanyahu would rather not be bound by US conditions that come with the aid. I would suspect that Egypt will want their payments to continue.

I think it's a good sign for Trump/Republicans. The odd MAGA-only voter has been Trump's strength but Republicans' achilles heel. Dems have always been motivated to turn out against him. So, big turnout, unlike pre-Trump conventional wisdom, is most likely good for Republicans.

There is a rare possibility it means unaffiliated normies are really upset and motivated and coming out to vote en masse. While always possible, it's always very unlikely. We're not at Carter 1980 levels of normie unhappiness.

T2 cut off a lot of that aid already. USAID is basically dead, most of the "humanitarian aid" programs have been shitcanned, and some trade agreements reworked to stop just funneling money to africa.

That was the cause of all the whining and crying and boo-hooing from the left about how poor africans are dying because they don't have diesel to run their trucks.

There's always more to cut, but T2 already slashed tens of billions from the aid to africa. Excellent start.

Europe also cut back on a lot of african aid.

Bottoms has been running consistently behind Ossoff in polling (spit).

There seems to be a serious issue with Bottoms appealing to white in the area around Atlanta which Ossoff is not having.

And, Rick Jackson spent something like $80 million of his own money to tie her directly to the BLM riots in Atlanta, which she explicitly allowed to happen as mayor.

Petroleum, like money, is fungible. If a Russian refinery stops making diesel, the Russians will have to buy on the world market to make up the shortfall. That puts upward pressure on prices. Disregard sanctions, the Russians will find a way to evade them, also putting upward pressure on prices.

But, what never really got any press was Trump cutting off any financial aid to Palestine in the first term. The amount wasted and used egregiously by the Palestinians was substantial. THEN, when Biden got into office he started up the payments to Palestine once again in his first month in office. And, Trump nixed them the same way in his second term as he did in his first.

In truth, we as a foreign country were financing both sides of the conflict. We shouldn't be financing a foreign government on a consistent basis. It should be only in "need" and reflect the goals of the US government at the time. It's should not be a permanent program.

195 Petroleum, like money, is fungible. If a Russian refinery stops making diesel, the Russians will have to buy on the world market to make up the shortfall. That puts upward pressure on prices. Disregard sanctions, the Russians will find a way to evade them, also putting upward pressure on prices.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 03, 2026 12:42 PM (0kX4S)

--------------

This is true. Which is why grain prices spiked when Russia invaded Ukraine. Yes, commodities are fungible. But in the case of diesel, we are the largest exporter in the world. If you are worried about diesel supplies in the US, you shouldn't. We have plenty.

If you are worried about price, that is a different matter altogether.

Wars suck, especially for the civilians. But when they start messing with commodity prices, maybe putting pressure on Putin to end his invasion would help.

Posted by: Sharpie at November 03, 2026 12:33 PM (iZHgT)

--------------

Russian diesel was not on sale at large quantities on the global market thanks to sanctions. Ukraine could hit diesel Russian refineries all it wants; not really going to make much of a difference. The rising cost of diesel is more of a result of the Middle East.

Ukraine is hitting the refineries making fuel for the Russian military. A legit military target IMO.

Posted by: Master Blaster at November 03, 2026 12:37 PM (C278+)

Russia was a disproportionate share of the international diesel market, as the second largest exporter. They banned exports entirely earlier this year due to Ukraine's attacks.

Voting day is always heavily Republican in every state from about the blue side of purple to the deepest of red.

If FL GOP walks into election day with a registration advantage in early voting, the only question is how big a victory Republicans are going to have.

And this can be repeated across a lot of other states.
