Go early and often Posted by: Skip at November 03, 2026 04:12 AM (Ia/+0) This is cool; from the ONT: 236 BTW, I'm doing my part tomorrow. My aunt asked me to drive her friends and her from her retirement home to the voting precinct. She called me earlier tonight and told me she rounded up 14, then whispered into the phone...only Republicans, which made me laugh. So, cutting out of work to rent a van (and still have to take two trips to get everyone in there). Should be fun. I'm bringing snacks and contraband for them to smuggle back into the joint. I'm black-pilling a bit, because I'm assuming everything will be rigged (or call it "intentionally not rigged") for sweeping R victories, which will then be used as a pretext for a nationwide campaign of delegitimization efforts and general helter skelter nonsense.
But I'm also not black-pilling on the whole, because I don't actually think it will work. It's just going to suck and be very, very annoying. Posted by: Warai-otoko at November 03, 2026 04:28 AM (aKiSo) 14

I worked on communications systems. The Internet Protocol became the standard.
But there is no effing way my customers would ever connect their equipment to the Internet. Completely private networks were developed. IP is great for connectivity. But when you buy gas at the pump, you really don't want your credit card info passing through the World Wide Web. Some idiots in Europe connected their smart freezers to the Internet instead of deploying a costlier private network. I didn't dig too deep, but were these "freezers" large distribution warehouses? Or smaller individual retail stores?
The first is much more likely to be run on a full on automation system (Schneider, Siemens, JCI, whoever). Those can be very robust for security, especially lately. But they can also be left wide the hell open if they're not set up right by the installers. I'd be curious to know what the system was that got attacked. >>their prices push them right out of the market sector that they were supposed to be appealing to. Once you add a power supply, case and some storage, you’re pushing over 500 dollars. For that kind of money, you can get a refurbed sff hp for less that will be orders of magnitude more powerful, add in an ESP32 and you have a more powerful computer and more powerful microcontroller. I think this price increase is an indicator that RPI intends to move out of the hobbiest market and just become a provider to industry. Tech topic: I received my Spectrum router/modem (still marked as Cox) yesterday. There were no instructions in the box. The connections were pretty obvious, though. I hooked it up in place of the old one, found the temporary network name and password on the bottom of the case, and entered those. Then I rang up Spectrum to see how to change that network name and password. I entered a variation on the previous network's moniker and re-used the password. Done. The unit is dead silent, no soft roar like the old box.
G & R, regarding that list of unreliable Intel chipset modems: I don't see a manufacturer name on this modem. Part and serial number, and FCC ID, yes. But no company name. However, it does not say "Intel" anywhere on it or on the box it came in, or on the minimal documents. The web page said "Stand-alone routers do not have Intel chipsets." Is this a "stand-alone"? I'll bring the old box to a Cox office today. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 03, 2026 06:00 AM (56Qyq) 70

Oh, and switching my laptop and TV to the network was pretty easy as well, though with the TV you have to use the remote for that awkward "moving through the alphabet and numbers" routine to enter the password. When Miss Linda used her phone for something 'Net last night, she had to enter that password too, but it was a simple matter of typing in the characters. (I rarely use my phone for 'Net things; that screen is too small.)

Traditionally this was a lute, hence the name: "lute" (lute) "fisk" (fish). Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at November 03, 2026 06:52 AM (qlLNh) 143
I remember one review of an all you can eat buffet restaurant that described their dessert offerings as "A wide variety of offerings of goo: chocolate goo, strawberry goo, and the like." It recalled for me my days of going through the dorm cafeteria line and warily eyeing the dessrt offerings in their little bowls.We called the bowls themselves "monkees" back in the dish room. They were great favorites for the great unwashed to jam together in their efforts to find the perfect food glue. @69/Wolfus: { G & R, regarding that list of unreliable Intel chipset modems: I don't see a manufacturer name on this modem. Part and serial number, and FCC ID, yes. But no company name. However, it does not say "Intel" anywhere on it or on the box it came in, or on the minimal documents. The web page said "Stand-alone routers do not have Intel chipsets." Is this a "stand-alone"? }
Maybe, but I'd look up the FCC ID at the FCC ID database and dig from there. https://www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid { I'll bring the old box to a Cox office today. } Because I was burned three times in a row by Intel Puma 6 Chipsets in three subsequent modems, and I know the problem I ran into showed up between 24 and 36 hours of runtime, I'd wait till you have the current one running perfectly for 72 hours THEN return the old one. Once you give that old box up, you'll never see it again. They disappear the old boxes with a quickness. Also sorry for the late reply, had a very early departure for my morning bus run this morning, and just got back home now.
