Polls Are Made for Strippers and They Get Greasy and Slippery Around Closing Time

The New York Times admits that Republicans are 30% less likely to respond to polls at all.

And if a group disfavored by the media party refuses to answer at such high rates -- what is the skew within that group? That is, among the Republicans who do answer, is it the case that Republicans voting Democrat are the most likely "Republicans" to answer a leftwing pollster's questions?

I don't know. Seems likely to me, though.

Eric Daugherty
@EricLDaugh

🚨 UPDATE: New York Times just warned their blue wave final midterm polls are being flooded by white Democrats, with white Republicans answering **LESS THAN 2020**

"The persistence of this kind of nonresponse bias introduces the risk of a systematic polling error like those in 2016 or 2020."

"This cycle, Democrats are once again responding to Times/Siena polls at a much higher rate than Republicans. Across these final battleground polls, registered white Democrats were about 30 percent likelier to take the poll than registered white Republicans. That's actually a bit higher than in the final polls in 2020."

Show up.

Make their worst fears come true.

I suppose it's also possible that Republicans aren't answering pollsters' phone calls because we're dispirited or ashamed of our votes for Trump -- but, of course, pollsters also predicted big wins for Democrats in 2024. NBC claimed that Kamala Harris would smoke Trump by 5 points.

CNN's Harry Enten has been warning Democrats that the polls routinely, persistently, systematically overstate Democrat vote-share by around 3.5% in every single election, and if you adjust current poll figures to reflect that, suddenly Democrat gains in the Senate vanish into gas like yesteday's chalupa from Brian Stelter's colon.

c Abbenante
@EricAbbenante

Oct 30

Harry Enten looks over the 'spooky data' for the Democrats heading into the 2026 midterms:

Harry Enten: "They need to win in states that Donald John Trump didn't just win two years ago, but won by double digits.

Senate flips in states that the party lost by ten or more points in the last presidential election.

The number is 0 since 2011.

There have been times in which the polls actually suggested, hey, Republicans might actually lose in some of these Trump won states. And then it didn't happen. And we've seen it happen time and in time out.

GOP has beat the final Senate poll average by 4.1 points in states Trump won in the prior presidential election.

So if the past polling errors hold in these Trump one states, then all of a sudden Republicans are able to hold on to the United States Senate and with ease."

Wave goodbye, to the blue wave.

Communist front-group NBC has a poll that shows Republicans with a higher approval rating than Democrats, and higher approval on most of the main issues of the campaign, but you wouldn't know that from NBC's headline:

NBC News
@NBCNews

A new national NBC News poll finds key groups that boosted Trump in 2024 are shifting toward Democrats ahead of Tuesday's elections.

What they mean is that some left-leaning groups that shifted towards Trump in 2024 are now shifting back to the Democrats.

Which is what I'd expect, and it is a problem.

But here's what they're not highlighting:

Ed Morrissey:

Pollsters know this better than anyone. How are they addressing their pending credibility crisis? Some, like NBC's pollster, have shifted sharply away from their blue-wave predictions. Their new data shows Republicans suddenly leading on all of the presumed big issues in the election -- the economy, immigration, and corruption:

Even on the unpopular Iran war, Democrats only lead by five points, and only by one point on inflation, AKA "affordability." It's a wash on "protecting democracy," even before respondents got to absorb Democrats' attempt to defraud voters in Alaska with The Two Dans Sullivan plot. The GOP has a two-point lead on the economy, a five-point margin on corruption, and an eleven-point lead on immigration despite the two-year hysterics Democrats and the media have pitched over ICE and deportations.

Democrats lead on inflation by a single point -- one single point -- and on Iran by 5%.

33 I've seen and heard a lot of pretty compelling reasons why polls might be *under*-representing Democratic votes, but not much going the other way.

If Dems get 54 seat and Grassley dies, that’s 55. Plus in 2028 picking off North Carolina, Wisconsin gives them 57. Ohio and Florida are special elections and if Murkowski retires, there’s a shot they can get 60 senate seats. Unlikely, but possible.

They will nuke the filibuster. We won't need 60.

Republicans have done an impressive, truly impressive job of shitting the bed and tanking their numbers. This is always what aligning with Trump will ultimately get you.

2028 better all be about corruption or dems don’t have a good chance. Hopefully the house exposes something

Given how the corruption story has FINALLY broken through, it will be a major part of the 2026 Blue wave, even if the Dems didn't fully capitalize on it.

Sorry what corruption story?

Is this a serious question? More like it hit a critical mass. What breaks through is “corruption at the expense of regular Americans”. Which need time for the “let them eat cake while we build the data centers” to develop.

Their entire life could be destroyed by saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.

How Nicki Minaj Went MAGA

The best-selling female rapper in history has just addressed the World Liberty Forum, a crypto confab hosted by Trump’s sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. She pauses to take in the decor, asking about portraits of Trump and of Mar-a-Lago’s original owner, Marjorie Merriweather Post. Admiring The Visionary, she remarks that Trump has a unique aura. “It’s the same way Marilyn Monroe represents a vibe,” she says. “Donald Trump is his own vibe.”

So is Minaj. She is wearing a shiny gold satin jacket, diamonds as big as the Ritz, and fluffy high heels. At 43, she is one of the defining pop-rap figures of the era, with more than 130 Billboard Hot 100 entries, more than 20 BET Awards, tens of billions of global streams, and a social media reach exceeding 200 million followers. Yet her turn from provocative, path-breaking artist to Trump acolyte has made her a pariah to some in the music industry and surprised her fan base

96 I remember the skew in the polls watching Florida 10-20 years ago as it shifted from purple to red.

Every year, the Republicans gained in net voter registrations, and eventually surpassed the number of registered Democrats.

Yet I would still see polls actually weighted something like 39/35 Democrats over Republicans.

When a pollster skews against the known actual weighting, they are not attempting to accurately predict the election results, and therefore must have some OTHER goal.

The pollsters frequently play this game, and it has gotten so bad that they work very hard NOT to publish their cross-tabs.

100 I'll repeat what I said this morning:

There is no historical basis for a state that went 10%+ for the President to swing 5% to the other party in the midterm.
None.
Not even Obamamania.
Not even Watergate.

But there is historical precedent for a President to expand his party in the House and Senate--defying historical trends:
W in 2002.

And he did it almost all in states he'd won in 2000.

Say, where has Trump been holding rally after rally after rally?

While Trump is some 20-30% lower over-all approval than W had, he has a 5-7% higher intra-party approval than W did at that time.

Why oh why did Trump keep going to red states?!

From the peeps I visit for plane info, they were trying to get above the storm that was threatening icing then started getting precipitation. If that overloaded and started icing, the plane might stall and fall out of the sky like a brick. It did come down like a lawn dart.

Very early days though.
Posted by: Oldcat at November 02, 2026 05:44 PM (uhVAy)

******
They had turbulence then icing, so I read. Were advised to go higher above the small cell they flew into. After avoiding the big one.

It was assumed, as it is early, the turbulence and overspeeding had them then lose the horizontal stabilizer and it was a done deal at this point. And/or if the wing de-icer thingie was broken. However, pilot comments I read said it was done once they lost the horizontal stabilizer, which I would not recognize if it arrived and rang my doorbell.

It was fast and over minutes from a chart I saw with the radar. The pilots knew 90 seconds prior to death. Which seems a short period of time until you are living in terror

Yes. Apparently at the same time she was telling ATC there was ice on the wings (-57 degrees F) and no control, plummeting to the ground after being told to fly higher and they couldn't. BF got texts saying the same.

The 55yr old pilot was trying but it was hopeless as the plane was falling apart. I read a an estimate of the fall at 600mph or .9 Mach. This lear could maybe handle .8 Mach. I have no idea as I haven't had learing about Lear's and am only typing what I leared.

I read this but have no idea what I am talking about. I am basically the Golden Retriever at the keyboard who reads fast and remembers facts. But have not made anything up, please keep that in mind. It was simply horrific and a miracle no one was injured or died on the ground.

Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at November 02, 2026 05:57 PM (hzuYO)

The "horizontal stabilizers" are the small winglike panels at the tail end. The one that sticks up is the vertical stabilizer. All of them have adjustable surfaces for controlling the craft. I'm less sure they are really missing rather than just not brought out in the few frames between leaving the overcast and hitting the ground. On some clips it is hard to see even the wings and the pilots don't seem to comment on their plane coming apart as they are dropping.

I saw a show of a British archaeology team excavating a WWII spitfire plane that had crashed in a French field early in the war. It also came straight down and the entire 30 some foot long plane's body was compressed into a stack something like 6-8 foot tall. They even found a small chain off the pilot's jacket and gave it to the fellow's brother.

Not sure there is an apt analogy for cars, since you cannot fall out of the sky in a car.

OTOH, if you hit black ice at a high rate of speed, there is a chance that nothing the driver does from that point controls the actual end state of the car.

213 It doesn't really sound like the young (20) female pilot is particularly at fault here. Weather, the bad decision to travel into it, icing and resulting inability to control the aircraft sounds like it will account for the crash.

But I do think, all things being equal, most people do not want to board a civilian aircraft and see a 20-year-old in the cockpit in any capacity. Experience and maturity are likely big advantages in emergency situations in particular.

215 Not sure there is an apt analogy for cars, since you cannot fall out of the sky in a car.

OTOH, if you hit black ice at a high rate of speed, there is a chance that nothing the driver does from that point controls the actual end state of the car.

That's kind of what I was thinking of -- loss of traction.

A puddle jumper passenger turboprop flying in Texas suffered in-flight break up during descent because the T-tail ripped away. Why did the T-tail rip away?

Just prior to the day of the accident, the deicer boots on the tail were replaced. But the rivets on the underside of one deicer boot were not reinstalled. After several flights the boot broke away during decent. Plane started nosing for the ground. Then the tail ripped away. Leaving just a small hole in a field.

227 LearJet 60, with its fuel and passenger load what would its max altitude be?

Sometimes you can't fly above a storm, you must fly around.

From Brave:

The Learjet 60 has a maximum certified service ceiling of 51,000 feet, regardless of its fuel or passenger load.

Well, shit.

I just had to close the rollup door at the shop because a couple of furry predators decided to come waltzing in. Yes, feral kittehs.

I think my asshole feral feline fellator neighbor probably started feeding them again. Last winter, he was piling dry cat food under the dumpster right next to my suite, and a cat got into the shop and stayed there hiding in the back mewing for about 3 days before I could shoo the damned thing out the door.

The last thing I need is one of those beasts shitting all over the stored items and dying under a pallet making the place smell like death for the next month or two.
