THE MORNING RANT: A Little Good News Regarding the Business of Petroleum

Lyondell Refinery.png

Valero to Purchase and Restart a Shuttered Texas Refinery

Although the inflation-adjusted price of gasoline in America is virtually unchanged over the past two decades, it is higher than where it was before the flow of Iranian oil was cut off to global markets. Also contributing to the problem of elevated fuel prices is the lack of refining capacity in the United States. This is especially true regarding diesel. The carbon hysteria of the past few decades, along with Democrat administrations’ war on petroleum has dissuaded capital investment in new refineries.

With that background, there was some great news announced this past week – Texas-based Valero Energy is purchasing a mothballed refinery in Houston.

The refinery had previously been operated by Dutch chemical company Lyondell, but in obedience to the E.U.’s anti-carbon “net zero” obsession, Lyondell shut the plant down after announcing its closure in 2022. The puppet-masters of the Biden administration were so passionately anti-petroleum that mothballing the refinery was also a way for Lyondell to help gain regulatory favor for its ongoing U.S. chemical operations.

“Valero to Buy, Restart Idled Texas Refinery as Fuel Rallies” [Bloomberg – 10/30/2026]

The pure-play oil refiner plans to restart 165,000 barrels of daily light, sweet crude processing capacity by the end of 2027 at the former LyondellBasell Industries NV facility, according to a press release Friday. The $320.5 million deal with Lyondell is expected to close by the end of the year, Valero said. The plant sits adjacent to a Valero refinery that’s capable of processing more than 200,000 barrels of oil each day.

This refinery can produce diesel and jet fuel in addition to gasoline. Production will re-start in 2027.

BP’s CEO on Renewables Debacle: “We Have Not Been Careful Stewards of Shareholder Capital”

Meanwhile, another European petroleum corporation that tried to pivot into being a “clean” energy company is taking a massive write-down on that failed endeavor. Fortunately for British Petroleum, its traditional refining is producing solid profit to help offset the losses from its pretend-energy division.

“BP Flags Up to $4.5 Billion in Impairments as Refining Margins Jump” [Yahoo Finance – 10/13/2026]

BP expects to take between $3 billion and $4.5 billion in post-tax impairment charges in the third quarter of 2026, primarily related to its energy transition businesses, even as stronger refining margins provide a significant earnings boost.

To abide with the edicts of the European state religion (The Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse), BP had even started to claim that its initials stood for “Beyond Petroleum.” BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 was during the time that BP was promoting itself as being “beyond petroleum.” What this revealed is that the anti-carbon activists running BP were distracted by the “renewables” nonsense and had become indifferent to responsibly running a petroleum company.

With BP taking this new $4.5 billion write-off for failed “renewables” projects, its current CEO, Meg O’Neill, is acknowledging that “We have not been careful stewards of shareholder capital.”

While Ms. O’Neill has a regrettable history of voicing support for Net Zero goals, she has also hedged on timelines, as well as the practicality of reducing carbon output without natural gas. It would be so refreshing if oil company executives would start fully and unabashedly advocating for the product their industry produces, rather than pandering to enviro-communist politicians who want to eliminate the companies they head.

Other Stuff I’m Writing About

My latest piece at the The American Spectator has been published. “Repeated Ethical Shortcomings at Instacart Hamper the Task of Those Defending Capitalism” discusses Instacart’s persistent ethical transgressions, including:

• Illegal hiring practices that exclude U.S. citizens.

• Surveillance pricing that charges customers different amounts for the exact same product from the same store.

• The use of unvetted, sub-contract labor.

Those of us who defend the prosperity brought about by free markets have always had our work cut out for us, because socialists promise “free everything” by the confiscation of others’ wealth. To make our economic case, we need businesses to operate as good corporate citizens, consistent with America’s historic culture of being a high-trust society. The motivation for a corporation to refrain from deceptive trade practices should not be the fear of legal consequences. Ethical behavior should be the default. Similarly, non-exploitative employment practices should be the expectation of Western capitalism, not something that must be compelled.

This piece is not behind a paywall. I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

This is interesting for another reason. Given that the refinery won't come on line until the end of 2027, does this suggest Valero knows (or is betting very heavily) that the investment won't be wasted by Democrats regaining power and shutting it down?

12 Corporate America must embrace the idea that ethical behavior is not just good business, but that it is a necessary responsibility to insulate against the enemies of market economies. Instacart has earned its opprobrium, and it should be seen as an example of inexcusable corporate behavior.

We've discussed variable pricing before on this site. Is it wise from a consumer loyalty perspective? Clearly not. Is it illegal? That's a very different question. Unless you're specifically targeting characteristics protected by the CRA (race, national origin, dude in a dress (maybe)), I don't think so. I'm not sure there's any legal remedy.

24 I've hired a number of contractors over the years (I bought an old house) and it was always a negotiation over the price.

There is a certain amount the contractor has to charge just to make ends meet, but the final price is ultimately determined by how much I want the fix and how much they want the work compared to other projects they could do

Isn't this also variable pricing?

For me, that's the cool shit our future was supposed to have:
Shipping container size.
5 years of continuous 1MW power; no refuel, self-contained--plug and go. Zero carbon emissions.
That's about 800 average homes (or 200 running full AC in the TX summer).

You ship it back to the manufacturer at the end, who sends you a new one and they handle the refueling and waste disposal.

Some decades ago, Valero refinery in the state of Delaware had a checkered past regarding occupational S&H and was shutdown in 2009.

However, the refinery itself is still active today because the State of Delaware pushed to find a buyer to save the local economy. In 2010, PBF Energy bought the facility, spent heavily to overhaul it, and fully restarted operations in late 2011.

It continues to process roughly 180,000 barrels of oil per day. It also makes local headlines for environmental and safety issues, including hefty state fines for leaks.

AI Overview: Despite being Delaware's historically largest industrial polluter, it remains an economic heavyweight on the East Coast, with PBF Energy logging billions in profits driven heavily by tight global refining capacity. (Delaware Online + 2)

Well, the main issue is that many (most???) foreign doctors and dentists seem to see their patients as large bags of money to be pilfered rather than patients. Each visit becomes a big sales pitch for things you probably don't require.

Though to fair, doctors and dentists plugged into large companies/corps often do the same things because they have a certain level of income which they must meet.

Individual or small group practices are/were generally pretty great buuuut, I think that day is probably over.

But was the transition actually the same sort? Were those other 100 companies going directly into trying to be cloud computing providers? Or did they already have a internal product that worked well for their own purposes, and found it could be easily expanded so that others could use it as well for a service fee?

Extrapolate that thinking to Musk's empire - Tesla, SpaceX. SpaceX apparently makes most of its money from StarLink services, with the whole "launch rockets" thing making StarLink possible but not being a profit center in and of itself.

Both of those companies make things - cars, robotics, rockets. Actual, physical manufacturing of tools and parts that then get manufactured into larger pieces. Now, imagine that engineering expertise is expanded upon. What if we could get factories up and running in months, not years? Factories like refineries?

140 I think the recent fallout over Sayed and core democrap groups abandoning him has less to do with the fact that he's a loathsome terrorist rentboy and more to do with they sense he's toast.

He's been toast for quite some time.

Again, go look at his big win in the primary. We were told he was going to romp on Haley by double digits. He won by 1 point. And his votes came from Dearbornstan and college towns.

He's an angry little muslim elf. And now everyone is seeing it.

Nobody saw that before? Of course they did. He's always been exactly the scumbag he is, and never even tried to tack to the center. Just the opposite, in fact.

What the Dems are now seeing isn't that he's an angry muslim elf. They always saw that. What they are now seeing is that he's an angry muslim elf who they doubt will win the seat.

This is battlespace prep for when he loses. "Well, I never supported that loser! No, not me!"

146 I don't have a problem with a party deciding a particular pol no longer represents their values, and defenestrating them. It's usually not good politics, in the sense that the "big tent" parties are always yammering about is actually getting smaller, and the party is ignoring their constituents, who are saying loudly and clearly that they don't want to go in a particular direction.

Murk is different. She's clearly not responsive to the constituents and Republican principles; she's a a Fifth Columnist.

151 All models are wrong, but some models are useful.

I ran the early vote numbers in NC through ChatGPT and had it do some analysis:

"Bottom line
Using exactly your propensity assumptions, plus the 95% partisan-loyalty assumption from our previous calculation and a 52.9% Republican / 47.1% Democratic UA vote, I estimate:
Whatley: ~2.526 million (50.6%)
Cooper: ~2.466 million (49.4%)
Whatley margin: ~60,000 votes / 1.2 points

So Whatley gets the majority under this model, but the result is highly sensitive to the Unaffiliated vote. The model's break-even point is only about 51% Whatley among Unaffiliated voters."

That UA vote is based on analysis of 2024 and where the Unaffiliated vote probably landed.

I'm not saying that Whatley wins the senate race, but this race is going to be much closer than people are assuming.

The hole Whatley is in right now is very big because of EV.

However, the remaining pool of voters is much more Republican than it is Democrat.

The Unaffiliated, though, are the largest partisan group in the state (roughly 40%), so it depends on them.

What I'm saying is, you should store your carbonized bread in a sealed box, and douse the whole loaf in bleach.
