We Are A Generous People; Try Not To Be Scammed!

I could rant for pages and pages about the evils of government largesse replacing private charity. It doesn't work, it never worked, and it will never work. A cursory glance at Europe and it sclerotic economy will buttress the argument that governments are horrendously inefficient at everything they do, so why not ensure that they do as little as possible?

Luckily, Americans are an amazingly caring and generous people outside of the cities, and there are many thousands of charitable organizations that do yeoman's work caring for those in need.

And as humans are wont, some are poorly run. Some are purposefully designed to enrich their staff. Some are flat-out scams.

And of course, because this is America, organizations have arisen to inform us of the relative quality of these charitable efforts. And that is a very good thing, because most of us will have difficulty reading IRS Form 990, which is just the beginning of the labyrinth that is financial reporting.

One website I use is called CharityWatch, and they seem to be rigorous and consistent in their evaluations. And that's nice, because I don't want to have to wade through some bullsh*t political screed just to see the cost to fund-raise compared to total revenue!

One of the things I think is important is the salaries of the administrators and board. It is glaringly obvious that there are some non-profit organizations that should be stripped of that designation and thrown into the general pile of companies in it for the almighty buck. And don't get me started on universities and hospitals that hide behind their non-profit status to evade the taxes that every other provider of a product or service has to pay!

Sadly, there are more ways for charities to obfuscate and redirect and flat-out cheat than there are watchers, so there is always a risk that the $25 you sent to XYZ charity is actually being funneled to some NGO that hides wetbacks from ICE. But careful reading of the materials provided by the charity will provide clues.

For me? I look for the most direct line between my dollar and the recipient. Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a good example of a well-run charity that doesn't piss away its donor's money on stupid sh*t. They used to send me stuff in the mail, which I think is a waste. So I called them, and a real person answered the phone! I asked that all communication be via e-mail to save a few bucks. And I have never again gotten anything in the mail! Is that a big deal? No, but it shows that they are serious about their work.

I am not touting CharityWatch or Tunnels To Towers. There are many fine organizations that are aligned with your charitable interests, and a bit of research into them will minimize the possibility of waste or fraud.

And speaking of charities! All of the profit from The Deplorable Gourmet goes to a couple of excellent and efficient charities.

What? You don't know what that is? It is the greatest cookbook of the 21st century! And a perfect Christmas gift, or even better a wonderful book to bring to your Thanksgiving host. It is elegant, well written, and everyone is wearing their best in the photos. It's even got original art! Plus, the food is great.

14 Charity Navigator I think is another screening site, CBD. I've used it.

At this point I'm extremely wary of almost all charities. Ideal ones are small local ones that are very focused on specific things of obvious merit, such as when there's a local disaster and people who need to be helped.

Fisher House is one of the only charities I have as a beneficiary for certain assets. Seem pretty clean and good to me - they provide free nearby housing to families of military active duty and veterans undergoing medical treatment. Hard to be that.

Semper Fi Fund, and a SEAL charity I forget.

17 I could rant for pages and pages about the evils of government largesse replacing private charity.

With the death of Mutual Benefit Societies we have dramatic rises in Learing Centers.

I still believe in MBS and reserve funds for things like the Cajun Navy or other entities who need money NOW for disasters and would otherwise draw from their own pockets.

Also, church spending is kind of weird because for some places it ends up subsidizing luxuries like coffee cafes, bowling allies and the pastor's third home for his sabbaticals.

I prefer the assemblies that have members do yard and facility maintenance rather than farm it out to some illegal aliens.

Then there are the para-church organizations that I like to help when in their infancy, but as they grow into full bureaucracies, I reassess and look for new start-ups that are still appreciative rather than entitled.

19 There is a charity that I sort of worked with (my office was an early donor, USG money) years ago that was very good. The Halo Trust. Started by retired British Army EOD guys.

Back when we worked with them in former Soviet conflict zones they were tightly focused - de-mining. They've expanded a bit to logical extensions like securing/demilitarizing weapons, and safety training for those in areas plagued by UXO and mines.

Just checked their website. A few years ago, out of curiosity, I checked their site - and was stunned to see, in the lead blurb about mission etc., a reference to "climate change". Not kidding.

I'm long past having any hope for anything more than whatever inertia can preserve in the west, but this was still a stunner.

30 The horror of the Salvation Army succumbing to cultural decline is magnified for those who have worked with them overseas. They have a small int'l humanitarian aid operation (at least used to), and I used them for some specific things in certain countries. Their budget requests were hilariously tiny (they rely on volunteers or near-volunteers). They did a great job. They filled a peculiar gap in that they are not a conflict zone humanitarian aid outfit, they address specific needs in more conventional contexts, which was perfect for our needs at the time.

Right after 9/11 donations poured into the red cross and other charities that were "helping" victims and their families. About 2-3 months later it was discovered that the red cross was using that money to upgrade their offices and other facilities all over the country.

They became a big no for donations for us after that.

I'd rather not participate in the scam.

If I know someone who can use something I no longer need and I know they'll actually use it... fine. But the "business" of "charity" was killed when those with "charity" in their name facilitated the mass migration of illegals into the country.

Are they even a "charity?" As in, do they try to do anything good with the money themselves?

I thought they took in money, skimmed off their 20-30%, and then just handed the remainder to other "charities" like Planned Parenthood. Who then skim off their 20-30%, and use the remaining half to kill babies.

36 There are a zillion Red Crosses (and Crescents). There are the local ones in the US. There's the international federation. And then there's the very different International Committee, Swiss, whose mission is primarily implementation of Geneva Convention (in WWII known to Allied POWs as "the Geneva man").

My experience was that the Federation did a pretty good job at training up foreign organizations in conflict zones or places emerging from communism.

The ICRC was excellent. Strict neutrality and confidentiality gives them access where nobody else has it, and their field humanitarian aid operations were first-rate.

So of course there had to be a dispiriting fall. It came after 9/11, when their legal types absurdly pretended to argue that the existing Conventions were adequate to non-state actor terrorism wars. It got worse. Their first visit to Gitmo resulted in one rep publicly criticizing US detention policy. Absolutely verboten under ICRC traditions/policies. There was an immediate clean-up with public part done by a guy I'd worked with on my projects. I called him, though long out of the business, to thank him and also ask "WTF?" - he sighed and said "I know".

Living in MN, I heard a lot of stories from the victims of the flood of the Red River of the North in 1997. (The biggest evacuation in the USA since the Civil War.)

The Red Cross was there to help, as long as there were TV cameras to stand in front of. When it became Yesterday's News and the national news media left, so did the Red Cross.

The Salvation Army stuck around. But, per comment #9, I guess I'll be taking them off my list, too.

Taxes are by far the least efficient way to help people. When I give to someone in need, the only loss along the way might be a stamp on a letter, the cost of a paper check, or a bank transfer fee. But charity through government hands get directed into pockets of people who are nearly all better off financially than I am or my recipient is. About a quarter of it makes it to the needy, and it is given in such a way as to foster permanent dependence.

My voluntary giving is much more helpful to others and satisfying for me.

71 Luckily, Americans are an amazingly caring and generous people outside of the cities....

Who are being fleeced by foreign colonizers who think caring and generosity are foolish practices of a weak and unworthy people.

72 fd there's an indoor range in San Diego named "The Gun Range San Diego", used to belong. Well I hope Mann recovers fully, and of course I'd love to know the details of how he self-ventilated. Safety first, folks.

Heh. She went to church with Rogers this morning instead of the "unity" event organized by Jim Clydesdaleburn

77 The sermon at church today was on Luke chapter six, focusing on Luke's somewhat abbreviated description of the Sermon on the mount, specifically the "Blessed are the poor."

The pastor focused on four Biblical categories of "the poor". There are those who are temporarily destitute due to a catastrophe not of their doing. There are those who are materially poor due ro a lifetime commitment to ministry or missionary work. The third category is those destitute because of a corrupt or tyrannical government. The final group is those who are poor due to sloth. That last category is the least deserving of charity.

Unfortunately, government charity does not differentiate among the groups, and in practice rewards those who are not willing to work, via a system that encourages and enables frank fraud.

As CBD and others here are pointing out, keep your charity giving on a personal and local level to eliminate organizations that prioritize self-enrichment or indiscriminate giving to the slothful as much as possible, reserving your giving to those poor through no fault of their own. Those who are most deserving of our charity. That is the true meaning of charity.

82 I also believe that when this happened the left realized that NGOs were the perfect tool for them. Raise money for the poor and oppressed and use it to get "generational wealth" and fund leftwing political campaigns.

I am getting the impression that the best help that Haiti has gotten in 40 years is the "not an invasion" that Nayib Bukele has mounted with El Salvadoran troops to recover 4 of their kidnapped soldiers, since they seem to be crystalizing some sort of effective resistance to the warlords in Haiti just by showing up.

85 Speaking of fleecing....

Bill gates made his fortune by buying/swindling the rights to MSDOS for a pittance and licensing it to IBM. He poached the designs and concepts from others, including Steve Jobs and Apple. A lot of why Bill is rich (and has a lot of money to spend being a gross pig) was at the sacrifice of others.

He's railing on Elon for not building his companies. Pot, meet kettle! Elon joked he should buy Microsoft just to fire Gates. Please, please do it...

@dcopechatter
BATTLE OF THE BILLIONAIRES! 😁😂🤕💪
Elon Musk shot back at Bill Gates in a billionaire feud, threatening to BUY MICROSOFT just to embarrass him. 😂🤣
“Don’t make me buy Microsoft just to fire him,” Elon Musk joked, flexing his enormous fortune after Gates questioned his accomplishments.
I guess Bill Gates has not heard the phrase, "If you don't want 💩 then don't start 💩!"

Fight fight fight!

The NY Times has published a lengthy, early endorsement of AOC for whatever promotion she is eyeballing next -- US Senator from New York or President, although they don't say. It's mostly filler, trying to justify the title about how she's "evolved," so the sheer amount of verbiage is obviously a sort of donation in kind.

I don't know what "evolution" they're referring to, with her current proteges including Abdul el-Sayed, the insanely stupid Angie Nixon, and Ilhan.
